My weigh in is tomorrow, and I will likely be over goal by a bit.

A difficult month, this September, added to by celebrations that centre around prescribed foods that are not entirely Sparkpeople friendly.

But, I keep on going on...

Looking forward to an October thread and a more stable eating pattern in October!

I feel like September was the month that I went through a few changes and fully embraced maintenance. Mid week I will road trip up to the DC Metro area and staying with my mom and sis for a week. I will also socialize with friends. It will be interesting but I feel very secure in taking care of maintaining myself. I'm not fearing anything and that's a good thing.

Peggy, that IS stressful. Moving by itself is tough, but downsizing is stressful in unpredictable ways. You'll be very happy once you're in, but I hope you have help getting there. I moved both my mother in law, then 5 years later my mother into retirement settings, and there was a lot to go through. It's the biggest reason I am staying where I am: just the thought of cleaning my basement is stressful!

I'm staying at goal so far this month, which may be my toughest month because we're in the process of moving out of the house we've lived in for 22 years - a very stressful time. I'm still managing to watch my portions of food and get at least 30 min. of exercise ( in addition to the exercise I get packing). We move into our retirement village Sept. 30. Then I'll get more exercise unpacking, hanging pictures and curtains, etc.

Nell I know what you mean but we don't keep the same weight every week. Sometimes it is water. I am usually about 4 pounds below goal but sometimes just 2 and the next day I have lost some of it.

Had a great Floriday! D and I went to Ohana Cafe (Gluten-free and organic food) in Ozona for breakfast, shoped at Bealls in Oldsmar, decided to stop by the Raggae Fest in Safety Harbor, picked up an Orange Mango Smoothie at Starbucks then browse at The Boutique down the block. We stopped at Publix for our weekly yogurt supply and picked up some spicy brown rice sushi for dinner.

I love the fact that we are firmly fixed in a healthy lifestyle. It makes life so much better! Oh, and yes, I weighed in today at 168.2. That's 1.8 pounds less than my target weight which I have been maintaining now for 4 months! I still can't believe it!

Down a bit this week, maintaining at more than 1 pound below goal--for me that is in the the 108 pound range.

I'll be blogging in the next few days about maintaining for a year--my first year anniversary is tomorrow, Sept. 19.

It has been an interesting ride emoticon

I am new to maintaining, so reading all the posts here has been very inspiring...esp. to see how long so many of you have maintained at your goal weight.

I am still losing a little, just a little. But I can't weigh myself right now since I am traveling, I'm just basing that on clothes' looseness.

Maintaining still seems a little "scary" to me, as this has ALWAYS been my Achilles' heel!

Rose, I'm thrilled to find someone else who only eats three times a day! I grew up that way, and adopted "between meal" meals as a teen. And blew up. Back to three and I've been able to maintain for years.

Hi Bonita.

It does sound like our situations are very similar. I
do not have issues with low blood sugar unless I
go way beyond my normal time to eat. I have had
them in the past on occasion and I know what you
mean about how awful they can be. Plus they have
caused me to overeat.

I have come to understand that a major key to weight
management is balancing our hormones. It is as
important as portion control and exercise in the formula
for successful loss and maintenance. A big part of
that balance is insulin and leptin response to what we
eat and when we eat.

I only eat three times each day. I focus on a low
gylcemic carbs with lots of fiber, moderate amounts of
healthy fats and proteins. I start each day with steel
cut oatmeal and Ezekiel bread. I eat very little processed
foods, white sugar or flour even whole wheat flour. I eat
some low gylcemic fruits mostly berries and lots of
vegetables. I do think fiber is part of the balancing as
it helps to slow the digestion. I eat around 35 grams
each day.

This plan keeps my BS and my weight steady and
allows me to up my calories on the weekends even eating
a few treats such as refined calories and sweets.
I also think that the interval training helps keep in
balance as well.

My BMI is currently just under 18. What you call low sugar shakes is just hunger., and I don't get hungry very often anymore. I weigh, measure and track my food, never eat between meals, and seldom eat dessert. I feel fine. I like having my ribs show just a little when I wear scoop necks. I can gain a few pounds, and someday I am sure I will, but for now, this is fine. I like being the thin older lady.

Hello Rosewand,

My situation sounds so similar to yours, maintaining pretty well for a year with a BMI of 20. I track and measure and exercise.

But, unfortunately cannot eat what I want, any indulgence leads to a noticeable weight gain that I have to work hard to reverse.

Maybe 'because I am smaller (goal 110), don't know....

Here's a question, at your BMI of 20, do you ever get the low blood sugar shakes? That happens to me sometimes if I dip too far into the low range of 20. Then I will eat a bit more to bring it up. With a goal of 110, less than 109 is not too good for me, I can et those awful low blood sugar moments.

Anyone else maintaining a low-end BMI with this problem?

After a year in maintenance, I think I finally have a pretty good
idea of how much I can eat. I gradually added calories in this time.
For the first six months, I was still losing some. Now I am pretty
steady. And that feels os good. I do not want to lose any more as
my BMI is 20. I pretty much eat what I want, more on the weekends
and less during the week. I do still track. It has been extremely
helpful in understanding my range.

The keys of maintenance for me are eating mostly whole foods,
interval training. and splurging just enough to keep it interesting
without a sense of deprivation. So far it is working. emoticon

I am thinking that maybe SP does not have a maintenance tracker because the emphasis is on lifestyle, not the scale.....

In any case, fitbit is constantly updating its site and now, if you are registered and have inputted your info, it will let you know how many calories you have to eat to gain and not just lose. It costs nothing and you don't have to use the fitbit device to use it.

For me, trying to maintain at 110, I dipped to 108.2 (!) a few days ago and so am eating closer to the top end of my calorie range in SP. I think that calories and fitness activities are not the whole answer of course. There is water retention, effects of consuming salt, TOM for the ladies, your size (as a small person I always seem to need less than what plans suggest) and I weigh myself each day and take it from there.

Maybe we should assume that if the trackers for maintaining are so all over the place this topic has not been researched enough.

When I went into maintenance, I also continued to loose at first. Took awhile to figure how much exercise and how many calories. I basically started by lowering my exercise from 60 minutes every day to 40 minutes every day and then I think I upped my calories about 30 or so per day and that seemed to work for me. But I think you just need to tweak it slowly until you stop loosing. I had set my goal weight at 125, I think it was, but finally stopped loosing at about 120, so it set me up for a good range.

4/19/14 Butterflies for Hope 5K for Lupus 39:23.8 (I hurt my back a few days before, and though it was my first official 5K with some jogging, my back hurt, so was very slow.)

I have been around my goal weight for 19 months now, thanks to Spark People's wonderful trackers. I even kept it off during my last surgical layoff when I was unable to do any cardio (for surgery). But I love exercise and get back into as soon as possible, even before I am fully recovered :) With all the surgeries I have had (at least 25) it meant my weight was like a yo yo when I couldn't exercise, but now it doesn't have to be that way. Careful and accurate weighing and measuring everything I eat will do it. No excuses. You are what you eat.

I tried googling for maintenance calculators and found that they are all different. One suggested you should eat 10 calories for every lb you weigh + 100 calories for ever 30 minutes of exercise or every mile walked. That didn't seem right to me since at the time I weighed 106 lbs and 1060 calories seemed too low. I had been losing weight on a lower limit of 1200 calories. I found another maintenance calculator that would also figure in percentages of carbs, fats and proteins. I put in the percentages SP suggests with a slightly higher calorie limit, and the percentages worked out to less than what SP allows. Now I'm really confused! emoticon

My maintenance range is less than my original goal weight was, but I am working to not go lower than 106 lbs. The bottom of my BMI is 104 and people are already telling me I'm too thin, so just keeping my weight up is my goal.

I started SP at 138 lbs in October 2010. My goal weight was supposed to be 125, which I reached in January 2011. I have stayed at 125 (give or take a few pounds) ever since.

Spark doesn't recommend anything about maintaining, which is one of the complaints I lot of us have. You pick your goal and weight range and we all just support each other into sticking to whatever it is. Spark can come up with a menu plan, but you pick your calorie range. I don't even count calories, so that doesn't do much for me. We are pretty much on our own, but here in this forum we do have each other. Which I find both helpful and comforting.

Yes I am emoticon

Here is a question, as you can see I am still pretty new to SparkPeople.

Does SparkPeople have a recommended range of weight for maintaining? WW, where I lost the weight, does the 2 pounds +/- thing, giving you a range of 4.

I have searched, and read material, and cannot find anything about this.

I wonder what happens to the weight tracker if you go over or under goal?

Any info with be greatly appreciated!

Laurie,
Thank you but it's a lot easier with the inspiration I get from this team! I'm just embracing it all! And your running is a critical force to my success in finishing my 5Ks! I look forward to the days when you come down to run in the Tampa Bay area races. St Pete just got the Rock & Roll this year! There are so many races year round in Florida!

I am very happy to report that I weighed in today at 170, my goal weight, with a 23.02 BMI. I have always had thin legs to begin with but I see more defined cuts in my calves and thighs as well as better developed muscle in my arms. It's obvious to me that my steady cardio and strength training has worked at a new level. My nutrition is so much better as well. I'm going to step up my cardio a bit as I have seven 5Ks scheduled to the end of the year.

I have adjusted my weight goal. I have increased my muscle tone quite a bit over the last several months but my weight has not changed at all. I am at the weight that my body consistently returns to when I am "doing all the right things" so I have decided to make that my goal range to stick with rather than fighting myself and getting frustrated. That number on the scale isn't the only indicator that I am making progress!

new goal range: 135-145, which I have maintained since Dec 2009

I still haven't been on the scale, but my clothes fit (not as well). If I don't see the number I want it tends to ruin my day! I feel so squishy right now! I need to be honest with myself about what I eat and just stop the madness! On the flip side I do continue to get my workouts in! I can not be fat again!!! Grrr............ Gotta decrease my carbs and make better choices!

Great job to all of you maintaining! emoticon emoticon emoticon

I dipped under my range in August, but have since maintained that range. I'm right in the middle of my "new range" after being 6/10ths of a pound from dipping below it. I think my body has now found a range that it can stay in.

I know that I feel good and have plenty of energy. So, it's all good.

Lynne, I have to tell you that for me continuing to use the nutrition and fitness trackers has really made a difference.... even though I know I am going to go over today... I added some extra activity in.
For me maintaining is not about continuing to "DIEt, but to continue the healthy life style of eating good food in decent portions and being active. It's become a lifestyle I love because of the energy I have, the way i look in my clothes, not to meting the look in my DH's eyes.

Lost 65 lbs and maintained since 2006.

emoticon Way to go, everybody! You inspire me. I reached my goal emoticon in August and joined this team to help me stay there. So far, so good.

One thing that is helping me is that I have had braces on my teeth since the end of May. Yeah, braces at MY age, which happens to be 61. In one way, the braces are good: I have to eat slowly, taking tiny bites. But in another way, the braces are bad (beyond the discomfort, I mean): The easiest things to eat are dairy products and juice! It's been a struggle to make sure I get all my veggies and fruits and grains. My food processor and I now have a very intimate relationship. You know, with the right seasoning, pureed stuff isn't bad!

I do worry a little about my ongoing maintenance when the braces come off in a couple of months. I'll be looking for some extra support and encouragement to stay in range from you all when that happens!

Started at 138, aiming for 125. Got there, and 120 seemed possible. Got THERE, and 118 seemed possible. Got THERE, and 115 seemed possible. And that's where I want to stay. Maintain, maintain, maintain.

I am still in my range, but a little bit higher than I was a few weeks ago and not quite sure why. But probably need to track calories a bit stricter. :(

Yep. Of course it's easier to stay in range when I am at the low end, something I'll need to bear in mind when the Christmas Cookies come around again.

I am now in the lower end of my range which I will take and have lost 10 lbs. in the past year. Obviously I did it gradually but that is the best way of doing it IMHO. Loving my weight right now and feel great.

Hope you had a great August. I was in my range all August except for one day when I was over. Fluctuations are frustrating! I didn't even think I'd overdone the sodium.

So, yes, I am at goal and maintaining!! That's 31 months free lifetime at Weight Watchers and 9 months in my personal range, all except for one morning weigh in.
