With the rate you keep getting walloped, you'll be shoveling snow for Easter, too!

I think this year in DC we'll still be shovelling snow on Valentines Day.

At my house Valentine's is no big deal. My hubby told me when we first married that he does 2 celebrations a year - Christmas and birthday. So that's it!

Well, my birthday's on the 13th, so I've always considered that a more important day than Valentine's Day. I've never expected boyfriends to make a big deal about Valentine's Day either. I don't want to split their focus. emoticon

I have the privledge of doing the program next week for a group of senior Methodist women...I am going to use the messages from the candy hearts we always see this time of year. On Sunday I have the children's sermon at church...so I am going to resonate love! Personally I have to work on Sat the 13th and anticipate a simple quiet card exchange between the DH and I.

I think I'd find Christmas paper anytime February or later perfectly funny! Growing up, though, my brother's birthday is in August... so we were on winter vacation for mine and summer vacation for his. No one was ever around for our birthdays, so we didn't have any jealousy with that! ;)

That's so funny you should mention that. My mother was a working Mom back in the 60s, and we always wrapped all gifts in Christmas wrap. It was kind of funny at the time.

My family does Christmas, my mom on 12/28, my MIL on 12/31, and me on 1/4... The three of us are just used to coming up with extra long wishlists!! Our families have gotten really good at at least wrapping birthday gifts in non-Christmas paper.

Oldmom: That sounds good to me. It use all my creativity to come up with Christmas gifts. There isn't anything left over for birthdays. I have a son with a birthday the day after Christmas, and that just gets tossed in with Christmas. Hubby's birthday is Jan 28th, and it's hard. I listen to people all year long to hear little ideas of what they might want. A month isn't long enough.

BUT, we "celebrate" every "holiday" with a special dinner, WW of course, on good plates and with the sterling. That is plenty.

When my husband and I first married I gave him a "monthiversary" gift. Okay, that was definitely overdoing it.

He informed me that he does two celebrations a year -- Christmas and birthday. No anniversary. No Valentine's Day. Well, it works for us!

We don't do much because I'm the overly practical sort who complains about the crowds, the expensive menus, and the raised prices on flowers.

(My poor husband)

Instead... our anniversary is August 12th. That makes February 12th the "half-year" anniversary and we go out for a nice meal on our half-year mark. It avoids the overpriced foods and crowded restaurants.

But I think this year we're going to buy each other some small little gifts. Given that we lost the last quarter of last year to my surgical recovery, we've both agreed that it's time to do something nice for us as a couple that doesn't revolve around my right knee. ;)

I do enjoy sending Valentine's Day cards to people.

But DH & I spend Valentine's Day like any other day - we just hang together.

My husband used to get me roses or carnations, but he died last year, so that will not be happening.

We just give one another cards and that's it. We tell one another on a regular basis "I Love You", and that day is no different.

I don't usually do too much. Husband usually will get me chocolates of some sort and a card. He is the romantic and I don't really appreciate it enough so that's as far as he goes. Maybe I should try to make an effort this year.

We don't usually do anything particular just say we love each other as we do most days. This year we are attending an engagement party and one year my now son-in-law asked my daughter to marry him as she was returning from walking the dog. A woman was passing and was amazed to see the two of them with a bottle of champagne and DD showing off her new engagement ring and DSIL on his knees.

This year is going to be extra special and unique. We will be attending the wedding of the daughter of a special friend. Her mother made the bride's dress and the bride's maid dresses. The 14th is also the 50th anniversary of the bride's mother and father.

emoticon Normally we go to a HUGE square dance where they have 3 callers and you go from room to room to room and just dance the day away.

We also do a large Daytona party.

They are on the same day. Daytona wins. One of the couples that comes to the Daytona party, this year only 1 is coming. The other is going to the dance. If I didn't have to host the party, I would be going to the dance w/ him!

I will be making a chocolate heart shaped cake (gluten free), that's about it this year.

That's a good idea, sending the grandkids valentines. It was never a big day when I was a kid; we used to get those tiny cards and give them to all the kids in class. We'd all make mailboxes out of shoeboxes and everyone would put cards in them. When I had my own kids, they'd make me the cards in school, and I'd make heart shaped sugar cookies with pink icing. It was never an adult day for me. And the cookies are a Christmas treat only, thank goodness.

In my teaching days I was so aware of Valentine's day because of the many school activities around that holiday. Well, February has many holidays that have activities at school. My husband never thought much about it as a special day. Now I am retired and we don't do anything special, except maybe a card. We are going to a symphony concert the 12th so that will do for Valentine's day. I should send the Grandchildren cards, though. It is a big day for them.

I send beautiful cards with words that fit
the person that will be receiving it. My 7 G-Kids,
son & wife, daughter & husband, plus a few long time friends that live in other cities or countries.
I often have the younger G-Kids so that the parents can have a nite out. When my husband was alive,we usually went to see a play, concert or ballet. But I
always cooked at home. Tom did not LIKE any restaurant food, that was fine with me,nice & cozy.
