I went over yesterday by a few too - would have been in range but had 2 glasses of wine.
I guess moderation is the key...

Staying in range pretty well -- even learning NOT to freak out if I am at the high end instead just barely into the range.

Kaligirl -- I'm glad you're adding more exercise back in -- I think that's going to be a critical thing for me as I maintain -- I'm afraid that if I let go of the exercise routine, I'll be more likely to let go of nutritious eating, too. We're learning -- and growing healthy and wise, too!

Stayed in range yesterday - about the middle, which is great for me

emoticon Even better I exercised this morning (for the 1st time in a LONG time) - I feel great and will add my workouts to my accountability
It will be a slow build-up, but eventually I want to:
3 x per week - strength training
3 x per week - callanetics
5-7 x per week - hour of walking

BestSusie - that perfectly describes where I am - I think I fell victim to pattern eating and actually filling foods like fresh veggies, fruit and soups, so now I'm trying to figure the best way to add those calories - I'm thinking about adding nuts to my salads as a starter.

Does anyone else find it funny that we're trying to find ways to eat Enough (!!) calories some days? I really am not hungry, and don't want to get out of the good habits -- so I still struggle some days to reach the lower end of my maintenance range! Keep up the good work, everyone!

WITH ALL THE EXERCISING THAT I DO, IT does NOT
increase my appetite. So most days I'm below
Range I manage to get down about 1o50 to 1150.
My BNI is 18. To keep it from going to low, I eat
1 whole Avocado( in 1 snack ) once a week.

Below range again yesterday, so I changed my goal to lose one more pound (BMI of 20 - so still plenty healthy, especially considering I have very little muscle mass...)
New range is 1410-1760 and I'm hopeful I can begin to build to the upper end.

emoticon OldMom - not only staying in range, but all the good feelings that go with it.

Nell - I'm with you. I have a couple suits my mom bought me 25 years ago that I couldn't bear to part with and can now fit into (@ least the jackets - I'm afraid age and gravity have taken what little bottom I had).
I've tried to shop for new clothes (not a shopper), but the sizes are all over the map. My guess is that each manufacturer wants you to be an exclusive customer? (Also - cheers to your size 2 - I've never fit into anything smaller than a 4 and that was for a brief, fleeting spring - ah the springtime...)

One of the great things about maintaining a loss is that I can keep the same clothes for a very long time. I have suits from 25 years ago from Brooks Brothers that still fit. They are size 8. The new suits in a size 2 barely fit me now because of size inflation. I am the same but the numbers have changed.

I also sew sometimes, and I wear a pattern size 12. Same measurements, all those size numbers. Manufacturers finally standardized sheet sizes back in the 60s, why can't they do the same for clothing?

Wow Susie! emoticon

Congratulations on your upcoming anniversary and way to go on your clothing sizes. I just took a number of skirts and slacks in for alterations, so I can relate to the scary part, but I'm determined not to balloon back up.
I agree with numbers just being a tool, but they sure helped me lose the weight. I'm only hopeful counting calories (or another tool) helps me to keep it off.

I'm still working toward the top of my range most days (had 2 recently that went OVER) -- but if I'm not hungry, why should I eat more just to get the numbers? This weekend I need to gather the size 10s and 12 that I bought a few months ago, and get them to a friend's daughter to be altered. It's frustrating to have NEW slacks that are baggy! But it's still scary to think of everything in my closet being a size 8, too! My 1 year Sparkversary is just 2 weeks away --- oh, the things I've learned here! Thanks, everyone for being on the journey with me!!

Nell & CFMoss - I too would love to read the article.

I stepped on the scale today to find I'm down 3 more pounds - may just be fluctuations after vacation...
I'm not too concerned @ this point, because I'm still well within healthy BMI range, but I don't want to lose any more than another pound.

I'm staying within calorie range, but can't seem to find a good way to get to the top of the range as opposed to the bottom and like Nell, I certainly don't want to go to larger portions.

Cfmoss: I just went to the Fitness Magazine website, but that maintenance article must be too old for availability.

I have found that I have to keep my program weekly as much as daily. I love the little emotional thrill from seeing the scale go down, but it isn't good at my weight. When I let myself eat more to get back up to goal, I'm terrified of losing something important, even though it isn't. By thinking weekly I allow myself an occasional dessert. I still don't eat out much--too afraid of what is in the food. Two of my kids cook for a living, and all dishes start out with a squeeze from a squeeze bottle of oil. That could be an extra 300 calories on top of the food, but they don't measure like I do at home. And the serving sizes! Is there a restaurant in this country that considers 3 oz of meat a serving?!

I went to a meeting the other night about the disease of "More". Some of us want more house, more car, more food, more alcohol, more clothes and shoes, just more of everything. The cure was to find a way to discover "Enough" and learn to be joyful (rather than resigned) with that, but it has to be in all aspects of life. Most of us with the disease of More tend to pop out in another area when we are so proudly denying ourselves in one area, like food.

I think the people who can find joy in measured food intake while losing are better able to enjoy maintaining without missing the numbers on a scale going down to justify a perceived "sacrifice". I wish I could have seen that article.

I do feel good; I still can't believe that I am 5 sizes smaller than I was before. I've been maintaining for awhile (or working on it); I think it is just as hard as losing weight - just different and I don't think anything prepares you for maintenance. There was an article in Fitness Magazine last year which talked about the unexpected stumbling blocks of maintenance - I read it but I didn't understand it until I got here. Thanks for being here.

CFMOSS - I can relate to pushing to the upper part of the range since my habit for 6 months was the lower end.

OK - back from vacation and did a fairly good job of staying in range, with the exception of one day where I actually went under due to stomach distress.
Will discontinue posting if this thread is not useful to anyone else.

So much for adding slowly...

Went over range by 440 yesterday, but had a marvelous outing with my teammate (hot chocolate [400 calories] + shared a slice of cheesecake) & then went to the New Year's celebration @ CCL - fabulous Oysters Rockefeller, crab, shrimp, pasta & prime rib.

Danced until shortly before midnight to get home before any crazies might hit the road.

All in all a wonderful end of the year.

Thanks Wision - I did and have new range 1,440-1790.
I've been around 1550, so I think I'll add the extra slowly.

Was within range yesterday (even though I wasn't sure what range was...)

Nell -- your comment about being a fat person who looks thin was interesting. When we're overweight, we believe there is a thin person inside waiting to get out --- but now that I've reached my goal weight, I realize that the things that caused me to overeat and become fat are still part of me ... and I need to continue to work and keeping her 'hemmed in' so I can be the Best Me I can be!

Have rarely gone over my calorie range since starting SP 11 months ago. The time was right, and I'd made a decision to get healthy -- finding SP was the exact tool I needed!! The support and encouragement of other Spark-er is tremendously important, too!

I'm delighted to find this thread. Great conversation.

Overall, I've done well staying within my calorie range since I started regularly using SP in October. When my mom visited from Dec 4-14 I didn't track regularly, but didn't gain. I didn't track on Christmas day, but only gained a couple ounces.

There is no day I've tracked that I've gone over calories, but yesterday I went over carbs by a handfull. Plan to do better today. Have lots of fattening leftovers I'd throw away but dear husband would have a fit. I'm just going to have to use and strengthen my "resistence" muscle.

Hope to report in here regularly.

CarolJean – thanks for the support

Momma48 – sounds like you’re where I want to be

WalkingAnnie – we could be fitness twins. Walking is my primary form of exercise, although I’ve been doing some strength training and am starting Callanetics. My goal is 10,000 steps/day and I’ve been having trouble building up to that with the snow (walk an hour @ lunch). I’m staying @ the high end of my range which sounds like the calories I’m supposed to consume. (Linda – if you’re out there – sure could use some advice)

Nell – thanks for the post. My first weight lose (this is my third – second intentional) was with WW, back in 1973 [no bread, eggs or cheese after noon]. My sis is using them now and it sounds like it will work for her too. I never thought I’d be counting calories, but Sparkpeople makes it so easy to see what I’m eating, when and even plan for those special days like Christmas.

Stayed in range yesterday and made my carb goal – need to work on carbs and proteins, so I’ll update you on my progress there too.

Thanks all – look forward to ‘talking’ with you soon.

Hello everyone. I just found this forum. I lost 33 pounds on Weight Watchers in 1970, and I've been at goal for most of 39 years. I gained 10 pounds while navigating menopause, but managed to lose it. It was much harder the second time around.

I track exchanges rather than calories. It forces me to be nutritionally balanced every day. I'm used to it so it works for me. Watching numbers on a scale go down every week (or not) so consumed my life during weight loss that after the first exhilaration of reaching goal, I felt deflated. My weight had defined me for so long I couldn't imagine life not dictated by a scale. But I've been at goal far longer than I was fat. If I hadn't lost weight in a measured and defined way, I couldn't have kept it off. Like Jean Nidetch (the founder of WW) said in her book, when you reach goal you have only won a battle. The war really begins when you go out into the world and no one can tell that you are really a fat person in a thin body. Accountability to me requires that I stay in touch with people who understand that, so I never forget.

I look forward to getting to know people who aren't building a life around a weekly weigh in anymore.

Nell

Hi Kaligirl, I'm with you too as we're in similar ranges. My goal was 126 lb - reached in early September. Since then I was stable for about 2 months and have begun dropping again. I'm currently at 122 lb. I do 10,000 steps a day and my calorie range is 1400-1700. I tend to be eating at the bottom end of that range.

I notice that SP is still congratulating me on weight loss when it happens and won't let me update my Sparkpage with a goal of 126 when I'm 122 lb.

So... it sounds as if we're on a similar course and I'm happy to compare notes.

Linda (Raylin) gives good advice as ever and I will definitely try to eat more calories.

Start weight - over 166 lb

Love the attitude! You are going to rock at maintenance when you can understand relishing 400 calories and realizing they won't send you into a tailspin.

Can't believe I started a discussion and dropped it - oh well, 'tis the season...

Raylin thanks for the question re: range. I've tracked my weight (lost another pound) and assumed my nutrition tracker would post new calories??? (I'm obviously doing something wrong and would appreciate advice.

On to accountability. I've stayed within range for the past week with the exception of yesterday - gave myself permission to exceed by 400 calories (which I did with great relish).

Hope everyone had a very Merry Christmas!

It's pretty scarey when you start out maintaining. It sounds as if you have a good plan. You'll meet some situations where you just can't count. Don't sweat it...you know how to get any extra calories back off, and you will probably need to from time to time. Enjoy your new slim status!

I think an accountability thread is a wonderful idea!

I only wonder if you are following the right calorie range for maintaining? You do not need to answer to me - I am just putting this out here for you to make sure your range is reasonable for your new weight and your height. I only question it because when trying to lose weight, most of us eat in the 1200-1500 range so for maintaining it would be higher.

My personal range is 1600-2000 with the goal calories being 1850 daily, not counting the calories I burn. I am down for 100 fitness minutes daily.

Anyone interested is welcome to come post with KALIGIRL!

KaliGirl,
I'd be happy to be your accountability partner. I'll respond every chance I get (usually daily, but mayl miss a few as we travel from Dec. 26- Jan. 3). Remember the calories are important, but don't become a slave. Portion control, portion control, did I remember to say portion control!

I just finished my first weekend after reaching goal – one day way over & one day way under, so I need some fellow sparkers to be accountable to, and report every day that I’m in (or out of) range.

Here are my goals:

Maintain 125 pounds
Consume between 1200 and 1550 calories per day
Build up to 10,000 steps per day
