I am up almost 4 lbs over goal weight .... I know what I need to do to get back to goal. I am struggling with motivation right now..... going to see if I can work on some self hypnosis to get back to my good place on weight.

I was thinking of making Sunday my desert day. maybe if I designate one day a week I wont have to argue so much with my husband about not having it every night. I did this a bit when I was trying to lose weight too but never really suck to it. I mostly just didn't have desert and when I did I just made room for it with my calories ( or tried to anyway lol ) but I know now that I'm not "dieting" my husband will be pushing harder then ever to get some sweets. If I say ok Sundays we can have a desert night maybe he will back off LOL I was thinking f doing this for beer/booze too. he wants it every night. if I say the first night he is home he can pick what ever booze/beer for that night that he wants then later in the week we can go out to eat or it will be my choice for booze/beer and that's it. we do not need beer nearly every night, that's just crazy! ( don't get me wrong were not alcoholics. we don't have a lot of beer every night and nether of us have any the week that he is working but all the same one a night for 5 to 6 nights adds up! ). Does this sound terribly controlling? his influence always made losing weight so hard. I feel like he is really not going to get that maintenance means I just keep eating the way I have just a tiny bit more. I keep telling him but if his last days off were any indication.. he now thinks its party time again. thankfully he is gone for a week at a time every other week so I can usually undo the damage but that back and forth probably isn't good for me.

MJ, from your profile picture, I'm guessing you have a fair amount of good muscle development. I agree that you could probably carry 145 quite well. I'm 2 inches shorter than you are, any MIL says I'm too thin at 145 (my response: not EVEN).

Rachel, 130 sounds like a good goal if it makes YOU feel better.

Having a better eating day today and got my yoga in...a good mixed levels class that focused on core strengthening today.

I may have spoken to soon about being happy in my current weight. I have always questioned 135, being it was all my friends goal weight, only they are all quite a bit taller than I am. I wonder if maybe a tad lower would be better goal for my short butt, but i do have a large frame that's why I left it at 135. but now I'm just finding I feel lumpy bloated at the higher end of my range and much more comfortable and confident at the lower end. I just wonder if maybe 127 wouldn't be better for me... I don't know. maybe I'll just spend another week here see how I feel. A size 6 is pretty small and 4 is down right tiny! I'm already a 4 in some clothing lines which means I'd be dropping to a 2 for them, That's Nuts!! LOL the problem would be I really don't want to lose anymore breast tissue. Maybe 130... Ummmm. Yeah I just need to sit tight for another week and really decide how I feel. My hormones are reeking havoc this week! I keep gaining weight even though I'm slightly under my calorie range. A pound a day, it's frustrating! I'm pretty sure it's just hormonal though.

Yay, Celia! Glad to hear your food battle was won for the day. emoticon

MJ...I think your new weight range is a much better fit for your height. You're pretty tall. How lucky are you! emoticon

As for myself, I've been making it a priority to eat a bowl of chili for dinner (at the very least), even though I'm not getting home from work till 6:30pm. I gotta say...I've been feeling lots better, too. I knew my body had gotten too thin and I was feeling a bit drained, but these past few days of eating higher within my calorie range, I can feel an improvement. It's amazing how our bodies give us the clues we need, to keep healthy, if we just take the time to notice them. emoticon

I changed my goal weight. I had lost too much the first time and then I gained a bit too much back. My new goal weight range is 140-145. I think that is a better range for my 5'8" frame and my 45 years. So, I'll see how it goes!

Gen and Shelley, you two are great motivators! I've had a much better eating day so far, though boss tossed another unplanned, short deadline project on me just as I was getting ready to walk. Will have to try to fit it in later, sigh. Hope you all have wonderful weekend plans!

Thanks for the feedback, Gen and Shelly. Boy, yesterday was not pretty. After going in early to do the morning briefing, I had an all-day meeting off-site that had me sitting and sitting and sitting. Then Roti (the Mediterranean "fast-food" restaurant) reeled me in, and the healthy lunch DH packed me sat pretty much untouched. When the meeting finally would down, I had to rush to get make dinner reservations at a very nice restaurant (read: I didn't hold back). So with no exercise and way too much food, yesterday was pretty much a blowout. Thank goodness for new days to try again.

the Warrior Dash looks like a lot of fun, I've had a few people try to get me to join it with them. It's a great motivator to keep your upper body strong as you need everything strong for that type of event. Maybe I'll do it.

That first 3mi is really the hardest. The second hardest is getting from 3-7 miles, then I promise you it's just easy. You slow down your pace and you can keep going. Your first 9 miles feels hard, but then when you try to run 11 miles, that first 9 is easy and only the last 2 is hard, and so on. Good luck with your goals!

I have one of these:
http://www.amazon.com/Omron-HBF-306C-Los
s-Monitor-Black/dp/B000FYZMYK/ref=sr_1
_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1344523462&sr=8-1&keywo
rds=handheld+body+fat+analyzer

I checked it again this morning and it was 16.2%. I will take it! At my heavier weight it was 25%, I managed to get it to 19% after running on trails (slower, side to side motion with different muscle groups working), and now it's dropped again because my years of running fast have been replaced with longer slower runs that you need to run ultras. I guess I need to accept the squishes here and there as the way a woman's body is supposed to be. I'd still like to get to 115lb or so, I'm 119 right now.

Chilli is awesome anytime of year if you ask me beans are full of fiber. bedsides its just yummy!!

I know what you mean about being a bit shorter and having every bump and lump show. I'm 5'4". I'm not worried about losing anymore weight. I could lose a little or none and still be fine with it ether way. but what I do want to lose is the pouch, I'd like to pump up my booty ( I like bubble butts emoticon my sister and mother are flat as walls back there and its just not pretty. thankfully I'm not built like them so there is hope ) and I want to slim down my thighs. I think I maybe getting one of those goals accomplished serendipitously LOL. I took my measurements this morning and my hip measurement was up by a 1/2 and inch! nothing else is up so I sat in the bathroom examining my rear for a good 5 minutes LOL that was fun emoticon

I have made some fitness goals, so far mostly running goals. My friends and I are entered in the warrior dash in Copper CO. Its mostly just a fun run. we have done mud runs before we know there pretty easy but I'd like to see how well we can finish, only I haven't been running much. I hate running on a treadmill and with a husband that's gone half of the month and a 4 year old its hard to get out :( but our dash is only 2 weeks away. I wont be able to get back up to 3miles in that time but I'm really going to push myself to get to at least 2miles with no brakes. I feel silly saying that with a ultra in our midst LOL yep I cant even run two miles without a brake... yet. I know I have a lot of work to do :) I'd like to keep running, if I can do trail runs that is. and luckily my son starts school is a few weeks when he does I'll be able to run outside as much as I want. So there's nothing in the way of that goal...other than winter but even that around here isn't much of a threat. last year we never once had a snowfall that didn't melt of the ground before the days end.

Oh and where did you all get your BF measuring tools? I'd love to see what my% is.

I made turkey chilli for the first time the other day and I really liked it, not bad for a non-chilli person. So many people commented that you're not supposed to make chilli in the summertime though! Who cares?

I joined this group because the 5lb or less group was really quiet.

I weigh 119lb this morning and I measured my BF% with my electronic handheld thing and it measured 16.x%. I measured it over and over and over as I'm expecting 19%. It even went under 16%. I really don't believe that is accurate, we'll see what tomorrow says.

I gauge my progress based on how I look in my running photos. A couple of years ago I was 130ish pounds and my photos clearly showed bumps around my waist, ugh. I'm very selective about which event photos make their way to facebook. Then at 125lb, there would be a good one or two, thigh on a good angle and such. Now at 118lb they all look good, I don't look "fat" in any of them. It's such a good feeling over such a small amount of weight, I wish I had lost it years ago. It seemed like I couldn't get below 122lb regardless of what I did, so I'm glad I eventually stuck with it. At 5'3, there is no hiding lumps and bumps.

Celia...I don't think there is any other maintenance team (as a whole) on Spark, unless you want to be categorized within an age range and then you might find a couple. I think we just need to make THIS team as active as possible, so others will want to join up.

Gen...It's funny how different people can be. You could never lift a weight! Yet, I would never dream (or enjoy) running like you so thrive on! It's awesome how it's not a matter of WHAT we do, but that we love doing it. And that's the most important thing.

Well, my soup from last night was extremely yummy! Have plenty left for leftovers. And right now in the slow cooker is my homemade chili with turkey. Haven't made that, either, in a very long time..so it's gonna taste so good. I just gotta figure out where I'm gonna find the room in the freezer to store all the batches?? emoticon

mmm soup sounds good, I need to learn some new recipes. You've inspired me!

Well done MOBYCARP!

This is the only one I've ever found for maintaining, I guess they have their employee people that you could ask?? I have one on my friends list somehow.

Still up at 119lb, but whatever. I also don't take too much notice of those fractions up and down Mobycarp, as mine goes up and down around races too. I figure in a couple of days I'll be at 118 again, if not tomorrow. Then it's just three measily pounds to go, assuming 115lb is my magic number.

As far as comparing your activity level to mine, please don't. I run a lot, but I kind of inherited some brute force determination from my dad, who was also a runner. You couldn't pay me to weight lift, or do any other cross training. I bike sometimes, but force myself to and it's only to be a stronger runner. Other than running, I'm an average lazy person, who sits at a desk all day.

And as for weight distribution, I had been at 125lb for a long time, I could get to 122 with a lot of effort, and getting to 118lb is only in the last month. My face looks gaunt, my shoulders and spine stick out, and my ribs are visible on my chest, but I have a little nip and tuck to go here and there further down. I'm waiting for it to even out. I can get away with a two piece, but there's signs that I've had a baby and haven't been doing my squats :-)

I've lovingly joked that my boss disappears when she turns side on because she's startlingly thin (and much taller than me), but I saw some photos over the weekend from our run together in our tanks and short shorts and I really don't look any different. She's more stretched out, but our dimensions looked so close. If anything she had biceps and I had sticks for arms. It's interesting how we perceive ourselves as bigger.

At 125lb you could see lumps and bumps (in my race photos) and at 118lb there doesn't seem to be any, but I think I can get my BF down a little. I'm at 19% now (low for a woman, high for a runner). I use a handheld monitor.

Sorry for the rambling.

I'm glad longer-term maintainers are responding here, since I'm a newbie (started in May). No way am I as active as you are, Shelly, Gen, and Mobycarp! As for being told I'm "too thin," only my MIL, who is nearly skeletal, has told me that. At 145-ish, I could still lose another 10, but I'm happy to let my body settle here for awhile. Now, if I can just find where I misplaced my motivation. I sighed up for the Spark Coach free trial (500 Spark points to try, up to 25 points/day for tasks), but it is aimed at people just starting the program. Other than this team, are there any other resources here for maintenance?

Getting the maintenance mindset . . . whatever that means, it's a gradual process for me. 10 months after I achieved my initial goal, I don't think I'm all the way to a real maintenance mindset. I still tend to think of lower weights as better. I'm more comfortable trying to maintain below a number than close to a number.

This morning I might have been one tiny smidgen closer to a maintenance mindset. I weighed in at 161.4, and could not remember whether this was up or down from the previous day. It turned out it was up, but a meaningless fraction of a pound. Yeah, I've known that the fractions of a pound aren't meaningful for some time, intellectually; but I still worry emotionally if the fractions go the same direction three days in a row.

It's a puzzle, how to adapt to having a steady state as a goal. By the numbers, I'm doing the maintaining pretty well; but I don't think I really have the mindset down.

Thanks for the reply, Gen!

Yea I track my BF by measurements and the 3 site caliper tests, so (as my pics show) my body fat number is quite on the low end. Can't say it's a bad thing. I love it! But I am at the point where even the tiniest bit of loss will show big time, so I've run out of wiggle room.

This last bit of fat loss came from my final stubborn areas...my thighs, lower tummy, and chin/face. So this is how I know I've FINALLY reached my lowest numbers I should attempt to go. I don't over use the scale, so no problem there. I'd much rather judge by how my jeans fit, which have reached their bottom level, also (size 0 & 1)..I definitely do not want to go smaller than this!

I get a few people commenting on my thinness, but it's mostly co-workers who knew me when I was bigger, and, yes, they happen to be up in the obese sizes. I just brush it off, as best I can. The smaller built people, though, have nothing but positive words..so that helps.

But, I know, for myself, that my body wants me to stop the losses. I can feel it. So I'm cooking up a big batch of homemade chicken noodle (wheat) soup, right now! emoticon

I figure this is a good question for people at the low end of the weight scale as I'm sure you've experienced it.

Last week I joked with someone that she needed to buy me a cheeseburger and she replied 'I need to eat about 12 of them'.

Do you ever get people telling you you're too thin? (and it's only ever the people with a little extra weight)

GOING4HEALTHY - I was going to ask you if you knew your body fat percentage, I think it's a better measure of how you look than the scale, then I looked at your pictures and holy heck you're skinny! I agree that you're at a good weight now, you don't look like you have any body fat at all. I would drop the weighing to no more than weekly, and periodically try on your smallest pants. I'm a pro at staying the same weight but gaining bodyfat.

Two pounds higher at 120lb. I ran 32 miles starting at 9pm on Saturday, so the 2lb is not real, just salt and stuff. I certainly had my share of salt with dinner last night.

115lb and 17% BF seems like a lifetime away, Sep 9 is my goal date, so I have three weeks to obtain it (I can't restrict calories too much the week before an ultra, which is my goal date).

Have an easy maintaining week everyone!

It's kinda funny...I'm at 111 weeks in maintenance, at 111 pounds! emoticon

And speaking of pounds, I've reached a point which I never thought imaginable, and that is preventing anymore weight loss. I'm pretty positive that my body has arrived at its bottom limit, so I gotta get myself out of the 'Loss' mode, and into a maintaining one. Which is easier said than done, with me! emoticon

Even during these past 2+ years in, supposed maintenance, I never had to 'prevent' the scale from dropping, cause I knew I still had body fat I could lose, so I never focused on the standing still, within a specific range, kind of mindset. If I lost more..great!..if I didn't ..no biggie! I just allowed my body to decide what it wanted to do.

But, now, I'm pretty darn positive, my body has arrived at its maximum limit, on both the scale and the body fat, so it's time to tighten the reins. I want to remain healthy looking and feeling, and I know weighing anything less, will change all that.

So, team, what's the secret of switching modes?? I know all about the eating more..I just need tips on shifting the mindset.

Thanks! emoticon

hi everyone. I'[m happy to say I'm maintaining at 136. A day at a time.

A day at a time and I will reach my goal. I am not perfect but I will forgive myself for the mistakes I make. Life is full of choices and sometimes we don't always make the best ones but that's what makes us human.

So its peach season here and I got a wonderful opportunity to pick my own peaches for free! yesterday my husband and I filled two boxes. we will probably be canning all day today... low sugar peach jam, peach salsa and just regular peach perseveres. but all this abundance of peaches had me over indulging a bit ...ok a lot ( can we say peach cobbler!! ). I went from 133.8 to 136.8 over night WOW!! emoticon I'm still in my range but my first reaction was to get to the gym early and hit the treadmill before my weight training class... Do you think that is being a bit obsessive or just proactive?

I found a trusty body fat, lean body mass, weight, formula online and it states that if I'm 17% BF (upper end for a runner), that equates to 115lb (assuming I have muscle and am not jello).

New goal : 115lb, 17% bf
Current: 118lb, 19% bf
Goal Date: 09/08 (50mi race that day)

It shouldn't be too hard to achieve this year because I started running ultras, which equates to long slow runs, as opposed to speed work for marathons.

Ugh, didn't make it out to walk yesterday before the storms hit, and then I got the munchies watching the Olympics. Glad DH is back today, since I tend to do better when he is home and we have a decent meal together.

yeah I think people get so focused with the number on the scale, when what they need to do in reality is focus on toning exercises. You can be 110lb and flabby, and people forget that and instead aim for 105lb.

I ran 37 miles just over the weekend, I have extra calories a number of days per week to keep me going into the next run.

Hi, Gen!

Sounds like you are well within your maintenance range. With all that running you do, you should be fine with having those little extra nibbles of foods, now and again.

To find YOUR scale number...that's just something that we each have to decide on, personally. For me, I 'thought' 125 pounds was it, so I didn't fight to go lower. I still grumbled over the bit of fat areas on my body, but just assumed I would just have to deal with them, at my age.

But, my body has its own idea of where it is its happiest and from the feel of it (and looks) I pretty much have to agree. As long as it is our 'bodies' making the decision and not our 'minds', then I think its fairly safe to follow its direction. I'm getting pretty darn close to that cut off point, IMO, with only a maximum of 4 pounds left to 'safely' lose, for my height and build. So I WILL put the breaks on, if necessary.

Here's to hoping you find YOUR happy scale/body place. emoticon

to continue the conversation about tracking or not to track...

I've just in the last few days stopped tracking. The last time I stopped I replaced tracking with snacking, I seem to very quickly start a nibbling habit (yesterday it was Special K crackers and dried cranberrys - at least I'm aware of it now so will pay more attention). I run a lot, so I have to balance calories in and calories out a lot more carefully than some, there's definitely days where I have to eat a lot of food. That doesn't mean cheese burgers and pizzas, but those are the days where I place less of a limitation on portion sizes, whereas it's constantly on my mind around meal times at any other time.

For me calorie counting is important when you get off track, but I see it more to learn an awareness of what you're eating, and to make better choices. No two carbonaras are the same, for example.

Gen, looks like you're doing great!

G4H, got one of those kicks for me? I had another week of too much food while on a vacation trip. We had long walks on two of the five days, but the other days were either travel (sit a long time in a plane or car) or just being lazy. We so loved driving through flat prairie land surrounded by lush fields and pastures, going for miles at a time without seeing another car. Now back to the awful traffic and bad air in DC. The only good part about coming back is getting back to my eating routine.

Hi all, it's been a looong time since I've been subscribed to this page. I've used it twice in the past (since maybe 2006) as a motivator, I won't let myself join it until I get to a good weight, and here I am again.

I don't really know what my goal weight should be, I've been a lower weight as an adult, but I've not run as much as I am now. My legs are so defined and strong, there's a little nip and a tuck in other places, but I don't know what that relates to on a scale.

118lb and 19.1% BF.

Tee hee G4H! I really did question in my mind why she would call a meeting for Saturday instead of our usual Sunday, but she's a cop and works strange hours, so I went even though I couldn't reach her.

Finally had a day within calorie range yesterday, after a really bad week of too much food and too little exercise. No goals met ;-)

Awesome, Shelly! The one thing I like about Chinese buffets is that I take just a teensy bit of any one thing because I want to try so many things. Except for the crab cheese (or crab Rangoon), which is my main hurdle, I do okay there.

Yesterday, I went to a meeting of our volksmarch club at Dogfish Head Alehouse...the only person to show up, because I was the only member who took the president at her word when she announced the date as yesterday. It was a really bad drive in rain and awful DC-area traffic, so I stayed and had a beer (small pour of the 120 minute IPA) and the hummus appetizer with all veggies, no pita. Did okay till I got home, then oops! Oh, well, new start.

MJ, I recall pre-menopause days less than fondly. Wishing you the best, but I'm glad that phase is behind me. Not that I don't still get hot flashes and night sweats, but the irregularity of those last few years is over.

I did awesome with my eating out at the Chinese buffet! I began drinking a 32oz bottle of water on the drive there, then I drank a huge glass during dinner. When I went up to the food lines, it was amazing just how EASY it was for me to steer 100% clear of the breaded, deep fried selections. I simply chose the healthiest dishes...Broccoli & Chicken, Vegetable Lo Mein, steamed Shrimp, Mandarin Oranges...and I just took small portions! Also, it was great...nothing I selected tasted salty, at all.

Afterwards we came home for the dessert and I just had a small slice of cake and a smidgen of vanilla ice cream with a drizzle of hot fudge. Oh, and I had no desire for the sweet frosting, so I just ate around it. I did great! Ladies, this was my biggest hurdle, as Chinese is my trigger food, so I'm so proud of myself for doing as wonderful as I did. I was really panicked when the family told me where we were gonna be eating, as I was terrified I might fail. But, nope...I did it!! emoticon emoticon

MJREIMERS...You are not alone, as Menopause is just millimeter's away from my doorstep! emoticon Glad to hear your scale is on its way back down for ya. emoticon

Finally, the scale is going back down! That's one thing I never considered is my metabolism slowing down every other year or so. 45 is looming and I think it's lowered again. That and I'm starting to see menopause symptoms. Oh joy! I'll deal and still be at my lower weight range! emoticon

Shelly, let us know how it went. I had a bad eating week, too, blech. The water weight has come down, but I'm sure there was a solid couple of pounds in there.

Peggy, I know just how you feel. Tonight is my Grandson's birthday and he's chosen to go eat at a Chinese buffet BEFORE we come home and have German Chocolate cake with ice cream. I'm in trouble! Chinese food is my absolute favorite food, but due to the high sodium amounts, I avoid it like the plague. So my head is spinning on how to avoid gaining 5 pounds of water!! emoticon

Once in a while I find I'm a little over my goal and I usually know why. This week I'm 4 lbs. over because I haven't been doing my usual vigorous walk each day. Hot, humid weather has kept me in my comfortable air-conditioned house. This a.m. it was cooler so I walked a mile up and down hill early in the morning. I'll try to do that each day this week and hope to be back closer to my goal by next weigh-in. emoticon
