It really does get easier. But you can never drop your guard. Once you find a footing you will feel more and more confident. It took me a good 3 months to start to feel comfortable.

Don't set your limits until you have tested them...

I guess I'm still in that "experimental" stage as well! But the good thing is, no matter how hard it is, I'm accepting the fact that I always need to be aware of what I'm eating. Keeping it all in check, like you said, Jeri1952.

Yes, but you always have to keep everything in check - exercise and log your food. You can cheat once in a while but don't go nuts. If this is the trade off for feeling good about myself, it's a no brainer.

Lady_Donkey: It does get easier...believe me...but only after you've found the right combination of exercise and calorie intake.

You're in the experimental stage now and have to carefully monitor every day to come up with your true "lifestyle".

Best of luck to you....I know you can do it!!

I don't know if it ever gets "easy" although it may become more routine.

I still have to workout at least 4 days a week aerobically, and a day or 2 of strenght training, and stretching.

I still have to watch my food intake, and stick to healthy, natural foods, and avoid overly processed garbage.

These things have become more habitual, and part of my lifestyle, but it can be difficult at time when there is a box of fresh doughnuts someone has brought into the office, to stick to my yogurt or oatmeal and fruit!

I'm in it for the long haul, and feel much more fit an healthy because of it!

I DID IT!! I'm finally at GOAL...actually I've surpassed and gone to 134... but I'm going to ease into the maintenance mode since I'm starting a short vacation tomorrow(will be away from SPARK for a few days). We're going to a wine festival, so I wanted some leeway to enjoy it.

I actually just reached my goal a few days ago!! I'm thrilled, of course, but I am more concerned with "maintaining" my current weight. Hope I can do as good a job as all you other guys seem to be doing!!

Feeling much better today! And the sun is out! I managed to minimize the damage once I felt like eating yesterday. I did a protein shake to try and get my sugar back in line and dinner. I also spluged with a piece of pumpkin cake/pie. Not sure which it really is. My MIL uses the cake mix as a crust with a pumpkin filling. It was heaven and I am sure it counts as a fruit serving?? I was asleep at 7pm and slept through ST that I was going to make up for missing yesterday. Life will go on I am sure. I have a run planned right after work. My sugar and body still feel a bit off so I hope it doesn't feel too hard. I am hoping for 6-8 depending on how fast I am going.

My hectic work schedule for the next 3 weeks starts today. We have training for our volunteers t & th 6-9 and all day saturdays. I am attending all of it. I will be flexing time so I am going to be all messed up for the rest of the month.

Sarah I am thinking about you and hoping you are getting all the right answers and a game plan going.

Foley?? Come out and play!

Hope everyone has a great Tuesday!

Sorry to hear about the flu/food poisoning, TGC!!! :-(

DH's weighing in - I guess a certain number will trigger that alarm! And you're probably thinking, "it's about time!", right? I wish him luck on his weight loss journey.

And that's really too bad about the weather being too miserable for getting the full 23 in. But 15 sounds pretty good to me!!!

Hope everyone is having a great day!

Up a bit today after a potluck yesterday. But I am assuming that the lovely case of flu/food poisoning I am dealing with will take care of that, lol. I didn't want to do it, but had some soup and saltines a little while ago and all is well. I just hate all the salt in soups. I am dabbling in the waters with a banana now.

My DH weighed himself saturday and I think now he is truly ready. It was a bit of a shock for him to see that number. Me too to be honest. He was a bit more than he thought and now is putting a little stock in my worries on his mom's early age heart attack. And of him being a prime candidate for diabetes.

Good to see you Wind. Good job getting your DH going. I hope to be able to post that soon myself.

I didn't get in my full 23 miles saturday. As predicted the rain started the second I got out the door and never stopped. We did 15 in it and called it good. After 2 1/2 hours our shoes were getting very heavy and we were worried about our feet getting tore up. We are only 5 weeks away from the marathon. Mine aren't too bad. Just a couple small blisters and rub marks. I did have my best weekend in months for eating. I stayed right at the top of my range. Kind of pays off to stay in and make your own food and serve the correct portions. Well, if 3 pieces of pizza is the considered the correct portion that is, lol.

Hope everyone has a good day today.

Good morning, everyone! WINDSURFNERD, it seems that usually one spouse will start into the healthy habits, then the other one follows their example - EVENTUALLY.

In my case, hubby was first, then me. He even has a tendency to panic when the pounds starts creeping up. I didn't think a man could obsess about weight, but mine tends to do that. LOL

And KUDOS to your husband on his cooking prowess!

I hope everyone has a great day!

I love this thread, every month I can re-affirm my commitment to a healthy lifestyle and share the victory with other maintainers!! Congrats to everyone! emoticon

I'll join in the DH-inspiring discussion, too! Although he doesn't SAY...after 1.5yrs of watching me maintaining, I think my DH is starting to look at a lifestyle change. He regularly partakes in the fruits and veggies now and suggests more home-cooking (he's always been a great cook!). He seems to be keeping a more regular exercise program, too. Here's to inspiring the ones we love by example!

Thanks, TGC!!! I appreciate your input! Now when I think about it, yesterday's lunch was a large bowl of (high-salt) ramen with slices of chicken sausage (!!) and I had only a boiled egg for dinner and cup of tea, thinking that it would offset the starchy lunch. Dinner the night before was high carb, a generous bowl of pasta with marina sauce, plus grated cheese. Plus I did do a slightly more intense workout.

I guess there needs to be some tweaking and adjusting along the way! Thanks again!

TERRIEJO, you got a new WATP DVD - 80 minutes, wow!

No, Sue. No angry faces, its normal. Trust me. Come in off the ledge, lol. It actually will be normal to have a fluctuation. I can go up to 3 pounds in a day. Yeah, bummer, lol. What did you do for lunch yesterday and dinner the night before? That could be your culprit. Maybe you exercised harder than usual? Your muscles will hold water. Whatever you do don't skip out on your meals. You need them now more than ever so you can start to judge your intake.

Start by adding 100 calories per day for a week. That is going from 1 pat of butter to 2 if you need it. A weekend splurge. Or and extra banana, 90 cal chewy granola, and extra 1/4c of pasta, a couple sprinkles of cheese or going back to something regular versus a fat free version. Or, a biggie in my book,a beer. You get my idea here. Don't change your workout during this time just go for food statistics. I remember it being difficult and feeling like I was flailing around in the water. It gets easier and falls into a rythm. I came here for help and have been here every since.

Eating is going well. I'm easing out of nutrisystem meals into family meals, at least for the weekends these past few weeks while we've been camping. Only a couple more weekends and my weekends off will be over until the next cycle of weekends off in 28 weeks.

Exercise has been going well too. My new Leslie Sansone DVD arrived in the mail yesterday; 5 Day Slim Down. It's an 82 minute work out in total ... you can either do a mile a day or do the whole thing. My plan is the whole thing every day for 10 days, (Leslie likes to do 10 day challenges) then a day off and rotate to another DVD for a few days.

The motor home is loaded and I'm ready to go ... just waiting for the two Pauls to get home so we can hit the road. Hope everyone has a happy, healthy weekend. See y'all next week!

May you always have

TGC, your husband is a lucky guy, but I'm sure he knows it! emoticon

How was everyone's eating the past couple days? I have to admit, I'm having trouble finding that "ideal" calorie intake to maintain this new weight. Last night I ate almost no dinner, had NO nighttime snacks, just water, but gained almost a pound...I didn't want to change my tracker either. emoticon
Well, it might just be water weight. Hope you're all doing well.

That is how I think of it for him Sue. I know I had to start somewhere and remember fighting parts of it. I just hope that when he does ask for help he will take what I give him. And that he will always know that I will never judge him for a bad day or a cheat. He never did it to me. Also that he will give it his best and not give up too easily. It will be one of the hardest things he will have to tackle. I will be there for him though no matter what. I just want him by my side healthy and happy for many years to come.

TGC, we posted at the same time! I suppose if you look at them the way you look at your own weight loss journeys...for both you and TERRIEJO, it did not happen overnight. The transition was gradual, slow, and a struggle at times.

At least he eats the healthy foods that you prepare. And I'm sure he appreciates all the compliments you give when he's successful! Don't get too frustrated. He'll come around soon.

You're right! 15-20 minutes is great! Better than 0 minutes. Your husband might surprise you on one of those walks. Just about the time you'd be expecting him to stop and turn around to go back with Rusty, he might stay right by your side and go the whole distance!!! emoticon

I know the feeling Terrie. I have been at this 2 years and he is just now starting to dabble in it. He eats what I cook for dinner, which is good. He just eats a bit too much sometimes. He also skips breakfast and lunch most of the time. If he doesn't skip lunch its all fast food. I have noticed his truck is cleaner than usual so he is doing better there. I have taken the silent route myself. I say nothing about anything he eats or lack of exercise. If I push him he is doomed if he is not ready. I make sure I compliment the smart choices like the salad last night. Even though it was full of cheese, olives and croutons, lol. Still, its a start. It took me a while to lighten mine up and I still splurge on mine with bacon bits. its the one thing I never could break.

Sure there is, Sue. There's ALWAYS a way to do something, it's just a matter of finding the right way to go about it. I have managed to get him to walk with me and Rusty (our Golden Retriever) when we go RVing. He just doesn't want to walk as long or as far as I do. We usually end up walking together for 15 - 20 minutes, then he and Rusty go back to the motor home, I put on my headset and keep going, and going, and going. I put in an hour or so by myself. Still, that was 15 - 20 minutes of hubby walking too.

Nagging -I know, that's the worst job ever. And we only nag because we care...you and your husband have tricky schedules, TERRIEJO. I can see why you wouldn't want to spend your already shortened time together just pushing him to eat better.

Is there a way to plan a walk together now and then, if you happen to have the same day off?

I wish I could get my husband involved in eating better and exercising. He is proud of all I have accomplished, but has no interest in joining the party. I know he would feel better if he lost some weight. His back and hip bother him all the time and I'm sure they would feel better without the extra weight around his belly. But I don't want to nag, and since we spend so little time together (I work 3-11P, with rotating days off, he works 8A-5P with weekends off) it's hard to lead by example. He doesn't see what I eat and I exercise alone during the morning after he leaves for work.

Actually HE started first! About a year ago, some of his co-workers were experiencing serious health problems, i.e. heart attacks, various cancers, brain tumors... then when his father passed away last September, I guess he had a very major wake-up call. He began eating right, which for him, meant no more pizza roll snack parties at 10 PM, no more Hostess snacks, no more seconds and thirds at dinner time...you get the picture. Trader Joe's became his healthy food store of choice.

He joined the Y and worked out at least 3 times a week, sometimes every night. So far he has lost nearly 40 pounds and looks and feels so much better.

I'm sure your husband will do really well once he sees how much good comes of maintaining healthy habits!!! emoticon

Not so much on salads with him. It was a very odd direction for him. I am proud of him and told him so. Was it hard for you to get your hubby started or did you just start right out together? I know he feels the race he did with me on Memorial day was a big accomplishment for him so I try to remind him of it.

TGC, your DH must be getting serious...you know what they say about potato chips...can't eat just one or, in your DH's case, a few! The salad with burger, is he normally not a salad eater?

Hopefully he will continue in this direction with more cutting back. And then eventually the two of you will be taking the "lifestyle change" journey together!!

That is great that your DH is doing a 1/2. I really don't see that happening in my house. He did ask what other events are at a full I am planning in May so you never know. He had me call him when I was on my way home from running last night so he cuold be ready for our walk before dinner. I almost forgot to brag that he put the chips away after a few and had a salad with his burger last night. Hmmmm...

Thanks, TGC! You'll have to double up on the fun and celebration then, if yours is a combination b-day AND anniversary! emoticon

Just reread some of the posts here. It sounds like your DH is easing himself pretty nicely into the working out mindset. The more gradually you start into something, I think the longer and more permanent that habit will become. At least that's how it was with me and my DH. Everyone is different.

My DH started out with the treadmill last year and this October will be running his first half marathon. Believe me, he was the LAST person in the world I would have expected to get into running!

TERRIEJO, I just noticed your post about baking 10 dozen cookies for your niece in Iraq. What a nice aunt you are!!! emoticon

Happy anniversary Sue. I am not sure what we will do. Probably we will combine my b-day and anniversary dinner into one. Since both are during the week and he will be gone for each of them with work. I have been craving lasagna which will be a budget buster on the calories so we will be walking it off together, lol.

TGC, our anniversary is also this month...the 17th! I already know where I want to go for dinner that weekend, and it WON'T be for a low-cal meal! LOL

Hi, TERRIEJO. I am still walking, but again have not been good about posting the miles. emoticon I also baked some butter rolls over the weekend and have been walking off the ones I ate!

It really is fantastic when you take a healthy lifestyle journey with your significant other and any other family members! My husband is actually more focused than I am and I look to him for motivation sometimes.

Have a great day, ladies! emoticon

Thanks Terrie. He has been pretty willing to walk. He even mentioned running again when I am done with my marathon in October. And we have a dreadmill in the basement. I have mentioned to him that if he got up just 30 minutes earlier he could get it done before work and would have a lot more energy. He gets up between 7-730 now so it wouldn't hurt too bad. Not like my 445. I think that may be an option when it gets colder. He has been eating more salads with dinner and some fruit so he is trying. I am very hopeful for him. It has only taken me 2 years to rub off on him, lol. September 23rd is my bday and the day I started SP in 2006.

That setting a start date is a good thing TGC. The HAWC (Health And Wellness Center) recommends that for people beginning a lifestyle change, whether for something you are starting (exercise, eating better) or something you are stopping (smoking). Their theory is you are more likely to succeed if you put some thought into how you are going to achieve your goal and have the right mindset going into the active part of trying to reach it. Maybe he was just testing the waters with those walks yesterday. I hope he gets in the right mindset and does well when his start date gets here.

Dubinjl I used my SP printouts for a Biology project last fall on nutrition where we had to track our food and then explain the nutrient intake and how it affected each major organ. IE the calcium effect on muscles including the heart, etc. My prof was very impressed. I think I converted a few people in the class with it when I told them how easy the project was for me.

Sue my husband is not done with beer/golf league yet. I work at the yWca and can add him to my free gym membership for $8 per month. He is excited by it. As long as I go with him. Ugh. I already do my ST before work 2x per week. I will work it out if he is willing to do it. We walked twice yesterday. Not far, but both his idea. And after a 20 mile run saturday I think he was secretly trying to kill me, lol. I believe he is ready and is setting himself up to start at the end of the month. He is treating it like a count down of sorts.

That's pretty funny about buying the second scale because you thought the first one was broken! So glad your doctor confirmed that you actually DID lose that weight!

Thanks for caring....it's just that it's hard to believe that I actually lost all that weight. Had to buy a second scale because I thought the first one was broken!!!

Last week, though, a routine trip to the doctor's office confirmed all's well. The doctor was pleased, too, and asked me to write down the SparkPeople website for him. He was quite impressed with the printout I showed him of a typical day's meals and the breakdown of nutrients.

Hooray for SP emoticon

Good job, UPICARD ... I'm following in your footsteps, so don't get off track!

If I had nightmares like yours, DUBINJL, I'd be afraid to ever close my eyes again.

Had a good RVing weekend with the family, despite the wind, rain and cold (low sixties). That's the advantage to RVing instead of tent camping ... you still get to experience the great outdoors, but have a warm, dry place to retreat too when Mother Nature turns ugly!

Came home and baked 10 dozen cookies to send to my niece in Iraq. I love baking and by baking and mailing I still get to do something I enjoy without having the finished product around the house to tempt me.

Hope everyone had a good weekend!

DUBINJL, that would be a horrendous nightmare to wake up and find that all the weight loss never really happened!

Where you are right now doesn't seem like a bad place to be at: being able to eat MORE calories in order to NOT lose! A totally new concept to me, but it sounds great! LOL

Congratulations, UPICARD, maintaining for 3 months steadily! I hope I'll be saying that in 3 months time!

So TGC, has your DH's "beer, I mean, golf, league" ended yet? LOL Maybe September will be the month that he comes over to the side of rational thinking. 38-39, that is so young for a heart attack.

Can't help but feeling like I'm in a dream and will wake up to find I'm 161 pounds again!!!

It's so strange that in order to not keep losing, my calories per day are now MORE than what I was eating when I was a heavyweight!! Must be an improved metabolism with all the ST and cardio!!! Figure that!!??!! LOL.

I wish. He is currently waiting for beer, I mean golf, league to end. I just can not get him to understand that he has to eat to lose. I have left articles out and he has a friend who is a competitive Tri-athlete who tells him too. I know where he is and will exercise all the patience I have. I want him to start on his own. I can not do it for him. I have been pointing out health benefits and comparing his mom's health to his age. IE he is 35 and his mom had a heart attack at 38-39. I want him around for a few more years than that! Hopefully it will work. He seems to have a date in mind and seems a tad excited by some parts of it.

We will be here Lasher. I will tell you that once you reach your goal you will do fine. It will require a bit of a mind set change and a settle in period, but it smoothes out pretty quick.

Sue I have a set of go to meals that I revert to when I am feeling a bit shaky on cals or habits. I am currently using them now. I also do the same 2-3 breakfasts or lunches since I know where they will put me for the day. I don't mind repetitiveness if it means I can go a bit further with dinner where I can enjoy the whole process of cooking it and then taking the time to enjoy it. If only I could get my DH into this mindset. He wants to lose weight without having to sacrifice. It is going to get rude at our house soon, lol.

I've gotten lax with tracking calories, so for me, sticking to foods that I know are healthy and lower in calories, plus keeping up with portion control are the methods I'm focusing on now. The over-sized chicken salad sandwich for lunch yesterday probably was not a wise choice. And after eating that, I should not have eaten the ice cream after dinner, but I'll see what the scale says tomorrow and take it from there.

Weighing in 3 times a week sounds like a good idea.

I'm still heading for my goal weight of 135... I have 17 days left to do it... Now, what I have been doing is weighing myself 3 times a week and tweaking my calories accordingly...so, if I weigh 137.5 on Fri. I enter it under my weight and my calories shift according to my goal...Is that what everyone else does?

When I finally reach my goal...I think that's when I'll need the most help from you guys...so don't go anywhere!

I've been maintaining for a month now. I still need to tweak my calories to make sure I don't continue to slowly lose. (but usually the odd weekend treat takes care of that lol)

I actually reached my revised goal of 130 on the 25th of June (the day before my son's 18th birthday). My original goal had been 140, but when you set a goal 82 pounds below your starting weight it's hard to imagine just what you're going to look and feel like when you reach that goal. I wasn't really satisfied with myself yet at 140, so decided to lose another ten pounds. Those 10 pounds took forever to shed! I've been as low as 128 and as high as 131 since reaching my goal, and have been pretty satisfied, but have faced some challenges too.

For weeks now, I have been anywhere from .2 to 1.5 lbs away from that goal mark, so I just decided that I'm close enough within the range to say I've officially reached my goal. I hope in September I'll be able to see that 125.0 on the scale.

feeling great after 5 months of maintaining. It finally feels like it is possible.

I'm there. 1 week into maintenance and doing great. I actually lost 1 pound during the week so I'll be making a few adjustments. A little more exercise and little more calories in. I'll see how it goes.

I am trying to maintain but I keep going down also. I think I was loosing muscle mass from not doing my strength training enough this last month so I will be working on that this month.

I am trying to maintain..but I seem to keep going down.
My goal for this month is to try and find a happy calorie range that I don't fear by increasing my calories to approx 1600 daily for a little wiggle room on the weekends.
We'll see if this works...

I'm a tad bit above the high-end of my comfortable maintenance range but still maintaining below my original goal. I've been struggling to find my spark lately but I feel like I've stopped the upward trend and I've been making a conscious effort to get more exercise too.

About a pound under the bottom of my maintenance range, but finally holding STEADY. Woohoo!

I am a MARATHONER!!!
Tacoma City Marathon (3 May 09) - 3:49:13

It was a stressful month for me too, full of ups and downs - and not just on the scale, lol!

So I am a couple of pounds out of my comfort range, but I know that once I get back on track -- and I am SO MOTIVATED to do just that this month -- they will come off with no problem.

I'm so happy it's September! emoticon

August was quite stressful at work, and I did creep out of my range (by igoogle standards) yesterday. Today my actual weight is in range, my igoogle 15 weight is just above, but trending down, so I think I'll be able to reign it in, and continue to maintain successfully this month!
