I'd go for option A myself, but I definitely notice that the less of those simple carbs I have the less desperate I feel and the less I want them.

I tend to have a treat every day. If I have been going overboard it is easy enough to go without for a day or 2

So, I think treats are essential.

My question is, do you all find it better to: (A)Have a small treat every day? Or (B)Go all out with a cheating treating blow out day once a week or so?

I'm inclined to think the (A) is a better helthier way to go, but I usually end up doing (B). Hm.

So long, and thanks for all the fish!

I definitely allow myself the occasional sin. Of course, I do it more now that I've reached my goal weight, otherwise I felt really guilty before when I did it. Plus, I generally try to fit the sins into my calorie range, or go for a jog the next day to make up for it.

Well we do still have a life so we should be able to enjoy it now and then. I use the Curves trick! I weigh myself every morning when I am up 2 lbs I eat 1200 calories for 2 days Voila gone. Then back to normal healthy eating with treats here and there. Your body does raise its metabolism to accomodate the extra calories so long they are within reason and it is given time to adjust! Doing this therefore raises your metabolism and you come to a point you are eating normally with only 2 diet days a month to maintain.

PS I can lose 4 lbs in those 2 diet days!

Run faster, run farther until you hit the wall of realization that you CAN do anything you put your mind to!

If your on maintance, there is no food word called sin only moderation. I drive a clean week without maintance extra's (not the extra one is allow to use daily) if I know I am going to a party, with the exercise I do I have to eat at some stage so Flemming doesn't moan at me to put on weight again lol...

I eat my extra's by looking at my core weight in the mornings, if the scales rise too fast eating a type of food I wait until my weight returns where I want it to be again, then try another variation until I find something I can use regularly...

We are all differently screwed together and burn off differently. My food I have to be careful with is bread as sits like a stone next morning if I eat to much... Fast food, can be made healthy at home, but cutting out all the extra fat and calorie heavy dressings. I also use pumpkin fries, which are under the vegetable catagory and are unlimited.. I make them in the oven on a special telfon tray...

It depends on how you define a sin. If a sin is having some Weight watchers ice cream, yes. If a sin is going to McDonalds and ordering a shake, no.

I wonder how good it is for my family now when I want desert almost every time I go out, so I can eat 3 bites and leave the rest for them, cause they always finish it off for me. Probably not very nice of me.

Totally... I do. I choose the lower fat and calories versions mostly, though. Like Skinny Cow ice cream; stuff like that.

If I over do it on the sweets, I just exercise more.

All in moderation, right! emoticon

If you love it, eat it! Just in moderation. If I denied myself chocolate, it's all I'd ever think about! I'd rename my kids Reese and Milky, trade in my dog for a Chocolate Lab, and become an astronomer so I could study the milky way. Much easier to just grab a tbl of dk chocolate chips and mix in some raisins to ease the guilt!

On maintance with DDV (danish weight consultants) I have to cut back my vegetable intake and meat intake to accommodate up to three extra's of my choice each day. However now I run, I eat all my vegetables and more extra's some days.
I can definitely feel the difference between real hunger and can ignore emotional eating. I now plan my extra's when offered a cup of coffee with my clients, this is one situation I hate saying no because some of them never see another soul over me during their lonely day.

I try to eat more veggies and fruit for mid afternoon snacks but I usually have 1 sin a day and stay within the serving size that the package says (1/2 cup icecream is enough, usually). I did have a bit of a food crash for a bit so now I'm trying to bring myself back on track.

I enjoy my weekends, and eat my favorites at that time, staying within limits during the week. A diet coach has said "be with it 80% and off 20%. That is a lifestyle i can stay with....let's see, out of 21 meals a week, that is 4 meals a week off. works for me! But I really have to be serious about my exercising 1 hour 4 times a week to get by with this plan!

I eat a lot of treats. I still really enjoy food. The difference for me now is that I also really enjoy physical activity, so I can burn off the extra calories, and I also think of food more in terms of fuel than I used to, so it keeps me from going overboard.

I sometimes eat "sinful" foods. One thing that's important for me though is it really has to taste good; if the treat isn't that great I won't continue to eat it just b/c I started. Last night, I had pizza and breadsticks & really enjoyed them so I feel it was worth it. Plus, sometimes I tend to be really low with my calories at the very low range of my SP calorie range, and I even wind up losing weight the next day--I prob. sped up my metabolism or whatever I guess. emoticon Karen

My favorite treat of late that doesn't throw the entire WW plan in the garbage: Low Fat Chocolate Muffins from the Sparkpeople Recipe site. I cut the chocolate chips in half and use mini; and add a cup of shredded zucchini for fiber. They then become a high 1 pt. food (two equals 3 points). I keep them in the refrig, and heat one in the microwave a day. What a wonderful chocolate sweet treat they are!

Heck yeah I eat treats! emoticon

It's like everyone else says--if you don't have a little fun eating chocolate sometimes, life just isn't as good, and it won't destroy your maintenance as long as it really IS sometimes instead of constantly, or in large amounts.

I think of it this way: when I was a teenager, my friends whose parents would harp on them every day saying "Don't you ever think about drinking alcohol, don't you ever think about drinking alcohol, one drop of alcohol and you will be sorry!"--well, those were the kids who eventually couldn't stand the curiosity anymore and started drinking, and then some became drinkers because once didn't feel so bad. But the friends whose parents made the choices and consequences clear but did NOT bring it up every single day as the Forbidden Holy Grail seemed to have less interest in overdoing it. I think any food that you turn into the Forbidden Holy Grail will be the same. You'll deny yourself cupcakes like a saint over and over again, until you're DREAMING about cupcakes every night and finally one day you buy a dozen at the grocery store and polish them off in one sitting. But if you tell yourself, "I'm going to have ONE cupcake a week and enjoy that one," it's a lot easier and its effects on you are smaller.

Anyway, I agree with you that looking around the room at a foodfest can be a great motivator!

LissV33 - I do that, too, most of the time. After a bite or two, if I am not enamoured with the food, into the trash it goes. If I'm going to spend the calories on something unhealthy, it's going to be tasty!!

So, yes, I do have treats. Sometimes, I have to think and be very carefully that I don't overdo it but, yeah. When I started on SparkPeople, I said that I wanted to learn how to eat properly, not learn how to diet and then go back to my old habits... and that if it meant it took twice as long to lose the weight, SO BE IT.

And it's working. :)

I'd like to met the ONE person who says they don't allow a treat now and then. When there are treats at work I take a bite and decide if eating it is worth all of the fat and calories. Usually not unless it is a Krispy Creme. I don't know why I love them so much.

After I've eaten a lot of things that I shouldn't, I feel so bad physically (kind of like a hangover) the next day, that I don't want to do that for quite a while again. After a while, though, I do it all over again. So far, I have been able to get back on program and get the extra weight back off (again). I think the trick is to get it back off while it is still a pound or two.

Absolutely!

Having a sinful treat once in a while is NOT how I came to be overweight. Habitually overeating (chiefly healthy foods) was how I came to be overweight.

So, I absolutely allow myself treats -- as long as they stay treats and not a part of my normal routine, I don't have a problem with it. Like the previous poster wrote, not making any food "forbidden" makes it easier to avoid feeling deprived and then binging.

I don't deprive myself of any food. I just count it towards my total calories. But, I do eat a bite here or there. So, I allow about 200 calories of my total to catch the chip I just ate out of my son's bag of chips or the jelly bean I ate. And I plan on some days being higher in calories than others because its a special occasion. I guess, you can say I plan my cheats.

I have sinful goodies more often than I care to admit. I usually allow myself a cheat day now and then. The only rule is that there can be no leftovers. Once the cheat day is over - all the sinful goodies have to be gone. I am one of those people who just can't keep stuff like that in my house or I will eat it!

But seriously, I think no food should be forbidden - it only makes you want it more. And we do still have to live normal lives where we have to attend wedding, birhtdays, etc and there will be food there. One day won't make a difference in your long term maintenance. Three weeks, however, will make a big difference - so don't let that one day turn into two then three then two weeks, etc.

Is eating dangerous goodies the only sin left? If so, I feel sinful. Last night we were at a big birthday party for a friend. M&Ms in party cups at each place setting -- dessert before dinner, right? I went to town on 'em, despite funny DH saying "Stopit stopit stopit!" Then came zitti etc., cake & cupcakes for dessert... Oh boy. But I'm feeling it now. Maybe in a way I was testing myself. Maybe I just wanted to be bad once, maybe even celebrate just once, and today, back to maintaining.

Do you ever allow yourself sinful goodies? On a rare, rare basis? Or, unlike me, are you good all the time?

P.S. What stopped me in mid-cupcake: looking around the room. They all looked like I used to look. Worse. Rolls of fleshy tires straining against the sequins... I thought noooo! I'm still thinking that now...

The longest journey begins with a single step. And then a thousand others, and then a thousand others. Deal with it. :)
