i asked at the Y and they said to measure at the bony part of your hips. Which I've been measuring all wrong ! But I am having professional measurements done in 2 weeks so I'll be able to tell you which way they do it.

Geesh!! I thought it was just me who didn't get this waist/hip measuring thing. So, I enter a number for the hips, different every week, and the chart looks like a maniacal roller-coaster! lol

Does ANYONE have a link on what SP wants here?

Some place the BMI is just a hight and weight thing...other places I have seen they want a bit more information.

Yay, RHYNIC you have the same issue as me totally! :D

Isn't BMI just a height/weight ratio though?

Anyhow, yeah I want to try to do some body fat calculators, and also I wanted to compare size charts for different clothing brands, and to do that you need a hip measurement, and the 3 measurements I'm getting with the 3 different spots to measure would put me at 3 different sizes.
No wonder I have trouble with Pants.
This is starting to be funny to me now! I'm glad I asked though since there doesn't seem to be a solid answer!

Yup, I'd just make sure I measured the same place every time.

However... I recommend measuring where the CATALOGS tell you to measure when ordering clothes... LOL!

*consults LL Bean size chart*

:D

I get three different measurements, too... 35" at the hip bones... 38.5 at the widest part (thanks, a$$), and 38 at the "7" from belly button" part. At least two are close *rolleyes*

i am sure that to figure out you BMI you more than likely need to measure a certain part of your hips to have the most accurate reading, but for your own progress if you choose a spot, like the hip bones, where you know that you are measuring the same spot over and over again, it might be the most helpful.

I have often wondered the same thing. My biggest part is just (almost) below my butt. So just a slip of the tape gives me a big difference in measurements.

I've always been told to measure 7" down from your waistline for your hip measurements!

Ok see, the SP page that is very similar to the link you posted says this:
"Use a measuring tape to measure your waist (at the smaller circumference of your natural waist, usually just above the belly button) and the circumference of your hips (at the widest part of your buttocks). Enter your measurements below:"

Stupid hips. This drives me insane. LOL

At my hip bones I'm 34" but at the widest part of my body I'm 38", so it is a HUGE difference. I can find articles stating to measure at the hipbones and articles that say to measure at the widest part. I'm gonna go back and check the SP guide now and see what they say too...

Ok, this has ALWAYS confused me, and I think I have it right, but I just wanted some feedback & other opinions...

So for your hips you're supposed to measure the widest part of your body, right? The widest part of my body is actually in the middle of my upper thighs (from the back it'd be at the WAY bottom of my rear), not anywhere near what I'd normally call my hips (where the hip bones are.)

So when I measure, I measure around the middle of my upper thighs, since that's the widest part. It just has always seemed like I'm measuring SO low on my body for it to be hips!
