Gail, I'm with you. I took my ticker off line for much the same reason, especially since I consider myself at goal even when my weight bounces around a few pounds.

I hope they can do something! I do think something like the community team member logo would be good too. It would be nice to be able to show some symbol of our success not only for ourselves but to motivate others (who do not even seem to realize we have reached our goals!) and show it can be done!

I am having a hard time eating more calories. I did not go crazy over Xmas and was up 3lbs and not losing it fast at all. I am ok with it and well within my 'range' but cannot eat more than I was when I was losing apparently!

I know what you mean about the well wishers. I just ignore them, but I've only gotten a few, so there's not much ignoring to do!

I even have that I'm in maintenance and list my maintenance range in my sig line, but I don't think everyone sees that. Maybe in addition to a second maintenance ticker, there could be a symbol or verbage by our picture like there is for the community team. It probably wouldn't cut the wellwishers down completely, but it would alert people that we are in a range that we like, and are comfortable in.

I think you have a good point about the range, some people just don't understand it, and want to reach and maintain a magic number, and for me at least that is just not possible!

I guess we'll have to see what SP brings us this year, they have added so many improvements since I've started, I don't think these are out of the realm of possiblitities.

that's a good idea about 2 tickers - maybe it would force me to define a maintenance range. although i guess it's 132-128?? although i'm never at the low end. so honestly i've really been aiming for 132-130 which i know is not enough of a range.

Anyways, i wanted to post today because i'm SO happy that yesterday i finally started eating well again after all the christmas leftovers and other crp i've been eating. i ate some of my standard low-cal food and tracked it and stayed within range and felt good about it. i still ended up being able to eat all day and felt none of that guilt i'd been feeling.
:) Yay the binging is over because i said so!

It would be good to have a ticker for maintenance that was different or something! I have something in my sig about maintenance range and only had a couple of good luck you are so close so far!

I just took my ticker off line yesterday. For a few reasons.

1) I am not exactly sure what it is I want to do...I may look to lose a few more pounds in 2008. Even if I chose to do so, I really still consider myself at goal.

2) I was getting annoyed with all the people sending me good luck...hang in there...your so close messages in regards to only having a couple pounds to lose.

I kept my ticker so it showed all the weight I lost, and many assumed I was still trying to lose those final 2 pounds. SO I thought if I changed it to a 5 pound range people might realize that I was at goal...but still the 'your so close' message keep coming in. :-)

God love these people they mean so well, but I feel they are missing the point that it's not necessary or possible to be exactly at the goal weight all the time.

I do wish there was a way to tell sparkers that I was on maintenance.

It would be great to have 2 tickers, one for total loss and one for maintenance range once you have hit your goal.

I decided to go with my goal weight range, since I can see where I am in my range a little easier that way, but I can also see the benefit of seeing how far we've come from the start.

Like you, I also like to remember how far I've come.
It's a great feeling to see it.
Sparkpeople is amazing for many reasons and I'm sure they will come up with a great solution.

That's been a topic of discussion on the community and team leader boards. It isn't there yet, but a lot of us would like to see it as well. I left my starting weight and ending weight up instead of changing my ticker because I want to remember how far I've come. I'd love to get a dual sticker to show both. Maybe someday--sparkpeople are always making improvements and it's still all free! Amazing.

Can Sparkpeople technical support create a special ticker for those on maintenance?

1. Include our weight range at goal
2. Show also our starting weight

One or the other don't reflect ALL of our achievements

That would be a great improvement and very much appreciated.

Hello,
I'm new.
I'm at my goal of 123lbs and I'm 5'3. I am 50 years old. If I go under 123 lbs I don't feel well. You need a wider range. 5-7 lbs. You don't want to fall into having an eating disorder. May'be you should stop weighting yourself and focus on how your clothes feel.

My highest weight was 285 lbs.

Thats great! Definitely an inspiration.

I was up 3 lbs this week but down 1 today, still within my maintenance range which I am finding a very helpful guide, rather than a specific weight!

I have not weighed myself in about a week and a half because i am a colelge student and home for the holidays. Two Christmas gatherings down, four more to go! So much food..... but i cna do it. I am not going to eat anymor sweets. I did so good avoiding them, but when i let myself have one...i slip and want more! GRRR

I like the 3 lb range...above that, I'm not happy.
So if I can keep it within that, I've decided to be happy with that...last week I went from 120 to 117..mostly I hover around 118. I think I can live with that and most people guess my weight lower, which tells me I must be carrying some muscle.
I am 5'3" and wear like a size 3-4..I'm guessing that is about where I want to be.
Merry Christmas everyone!!
I am starting my day tomorrow by a nice morning run.
My sis and I are going to tackle some hills so we can munch a bit through-out the day.

Success seems to be a matter of hanging on after others have let go.

Shining Emily...how tall are you? Maybe your goal weight is set too low. Remember model skinny is not healthy for your body. You look great in your pic (maybe even a little too skinny...but it's hard to tell). Most people pick a 5 lb range they are comfortable with. I am at the top of mine and working to stay here through the holidays, then settle back to the losing mode in Jan. Pick a weight that you don't have to starve yourself to maintain..or you will just set youurself up to fail!

I couldn't pick one number and expect to stay at that particular weight. Most of us have a 5 lb range, so your range actually to me seems small, if you want a 3 lb range. I would think that would set yourself up to feel like a failure even more. It's entirely up to you, but I think if you like the way you feel and look, then you are probably in your goal range. You should give yourself a range to allow for the fluctuations in your system caused by sodium, fluids, TOM, etc. But it really is best to go w/ how you feel and how your clothes are fitting, than to totally depend on hitting one number on the scale.

Well, I have never stayed at my goal weight of 125 for more than a few minutes :) But do you all just think I should make 126-127 my goal weight, since that's where I've been hovering for about a month? I am sick of "dieting" and I love my toned body! I feel like I "failed", but I think I just need a new perspective. 127 is 2 pounds away, and I really like how I look and how my clothes fit!

I'm staying within my range. It's been scary, because I've been on the high end. I would rather be on the low end with the holiday coming up. I can't complain, because I have been to several Christmas party luncheons and dinners.

Best wishes to everyone to stay within range and maintain.

I'm really nervous that any minute now my scale will jump. OK i was at goal wt. in NOv., then started to be kinda bad about not tracking. i gained a couple pounds, then i got my prd. and lost way too many lbs (3-4) too quickly (a few days) (i even double checked on my husband's scale) and then i've been WORSE and had like a million birthday dinners out and mine and my husband's birthday cakes.. etc etc and today i finally weighted myself again and i'm only 1lb up from before (one lb under goal) which is sooo weird. i feel like it's giving me an excuse to continue eating badly since i'm not getting any negative consequences (YET)... ACK i don't want to totally lose control!! - i know it will catch up!!!! i wish i just didn't weigh in - i would have assumed it was worse and acted better!!!!

ok thanks for letting me vent!

I started the holiday season at the low end of my range and now I'm near the top of the range. So I'm going to make sure I get my exercise in and focus on not going above my range. When the holidays are over I am going to count every calorie and get back to the low end of my range.

amazingly for me I have been more on track this month than the past 2 months. I started tracking my weight and body fat % on a spreadsheet in Oct, and looking back, I was over my goal range 4 days in Oct, 12 days in Nov., and so far in Dec, I have not had one day over my range!

I guess that a three pound gain is more or less staying in my range, but I definitely don't like the upward trend. I'm not waiting for New Year's resolutions...I'm uncomfortable with 3 extra pounds so I'm starting early to take measures to get it on a downward trend.

I agree about the treats, I usually have one healthy snack every day in my calorie count and it helps me withstand the other temptations. Not the easiest time of year for these though thats for sure and will be glad when everyone else's New Year Resolutions kick in lol! Plus don't forget your weight does change a little with your cycle, and sodium intake (a lot) and I do track my sodium and keep it well under 2400 a day. I think as a result unless I eat something way off (like Thai Food or something)my weight is remarkably consistent on a day to day basis. Also Calorie Cycling helps, and I eat more on my strength and higher exercise days, but healthy food of course!

Frankly my trainer would say that my hydration must be spot on, not to lose any water weight. In those 20 miles there are 4 water stations..we drink some from each. Not a lot but some in order to stay hydrated.
Secondly I think my body is just soooo conditioned that actually I don't sweat all that much AND the pace is kind of on th slow side. I sweat some for sure, but not huge amounts.
I will take your suggestion about scoping out one or two treats...it's hard because the treats are in the break room where I go for coffee...and I drink a lot of coffee.
I'm still at 120.2 today, so I am hoping that over today and tomorrow I can get closer to 118 or lower.
Thanks for all the support.... emoticon

Hey Pick-a-name, how much are you drinking on those runs? I think people usually lose water weight from sweating and the trick is to drink enought to maintain your original weight and not lose weight, but if you are haveing the opposite problem, maybe you are overhydrating, which would make you gain weight after your run. If that is the case then it should balance out again. I've heard that hard workouts can cause water retention in the muscles as they are working so hard, so maybe that is what is happening to you.

As far as all those treats go, I think it's best to scope out the offererings and pick one treat to save for later. The longer you wait the less you will pick since you planned on one treat. Then you just have to really avoid the places all those treats hang out, this can be tough, but the planning is the key for me, I can stick to it if I've worked it out ahead of time.

Take it easy on yourself pick-a-name, and just remember the fruits and vegetables and eating healthy and everything else will fall into place. And yes, I do wish I could weigh at least 5 lbs. less, but it's not in the cards for me..I'll stay at this weight and not add too many extra pounds.

I don't seem to ever be under...always OVER...
after running 20 miles on Sat, I weiged 120.2 this morning..my goal is 118 or less and still, it's never less.
Guess I need to really DIET again..and yet, even though I've had a few more holiday calories, I think with running an HOUR a day, would be enough, to offset those calories--as well as walking on both my breaks at work.
I seem to be more active than most and yet, after that 2 mile run I gained 2 lbs, not lost..how does anyone gain weight after running 2 miles..
it's extremely frustrating!!!

Success seems to be a matter of hanging on after others have let go.

See, I'm not happy being a little OVER my goal weight..I want to be under..
Is that crazy?
I weighed at 120.2 this morning and I'm not that happy.
I guess after you run 20 miles on Saturday, you think it's a GIVEN you'd be a little UNDER; NOT OVER..
It makes me angry and I don't feel like celebrating.
Does anyone else feel this way?
Besides this morning I go to get coffee and I notice there are fresh baked bagels..not too bad, but THEN...I hear "YOU have to try my wife's homemade sticky buns.."
There they were....indescribably delicious..I ate a small piece AND a bagel..no cream cheese..
then I notice 2 more HUGE Plates of homemade xmas cookies/candies....
Believe it or not this is all...after I get to my desk and notice a 4oz box of gourmet chocolates and a tin of candied apricots...at least the apricots can be a dessert FRUIT..by OMG....how does anyone resist this???????and still try and maintain..NOW I am thinking since I had a 2 of those cookies as well, I need to skip lunch......maybe dinner too...
grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

I'm very much maintaining this month and I really think I get what maintaining is all about now. I can go eat with confidence, as long as that little voice whispers in my head not to forget my vegetables, eat healthy and in moderation.

Thanks to you all!!

Surprisingly, with in laws in town and holiday sweets I've still managed to maintain my weight. Actually, I'm under my goal weight right now and that's o.k too since that will give me a little wiggle room. I've gotten out of the habit of working out though, and I need to include that back into my routine.

I agree..it's a huge commitment because of the time devoted to training. At least with the group, I have good guidelines and inspiration.
The 20 I did yesterday, felt very similar to how I felt after I ran the LA marathon 2yrs ago...very sore, but feeling very proud that I managed to run the entire 20 miles.
Even if you have to add some walking to get through it, it's still an accmplishment that less than 1% of the population ever achieve.
I think it might even be a bit easier this time around as I'm about 12 lbs or so lighter...
Still, I see a lot of injuries, most of which, are due to just too many miles...I have had achilles problems with both legs...that have caused me to rest more days than I wanted. Stretching has become HUGE with me...runners don't like to stretch, but only now do I realize how important that is to good muscle health. Next week we drop down to 12 miles on Saturday, then back up to 20...I think we go back and forth until we do 22 next month, and only once do we do that. We never go beyond that and in February we do a lot of tapering off on our miles.
Anyway, I'm glad I'm done and I feel pretty good today. Will take a long walk soon, just to loosen all those muscles up....I finished in under 4 hours..it figured to be 11:55 min miles. I think about our walkers (we have both walkers and runningin training)They are out there for a much longer time, but gosh, they do it too!!

I'm with you Gail, I've done the 1/2, and would like to try a full marathon one day, it's just the time commitment to prep is daunting for me. I have hiked over 29 miles in a day though, so I'm sure I could manage to finish one even if it wasn't pretty...

Thanks Gail
I guess I'm must not used to maintaining yet...I just panic when my weight goes up.
I mean I know it won't stay the same each and every day, but I'd worry less if it stayed lower, rather than higher.
I've read (because I am a marathon runner) that if you stay well hydrated your body releases extra water, because it's learned that you will replenish it. So I try to stay well hydrated. Tomorrow I run 20 miles with my running group so today I am drinking even more water than normal.
Thanks for your words!!!

pick-a-name, your weight will fluctuate a few pounds. that is very normal. Some days your body holds on to fluids other times it is dehydrated at bit...some days your belly is full other days it's empty.

this morning I weighed more than a pound less than yesterday...but I really didn't lose fat or muscle over night...it's water. I am not sure why it happened...more than likely has to do with snacking on high salt things - which I am not use to doing.

Hi Pick a name,
Go back to where you enter your starting weight on your page to set your ticker and enter the top range of your maintenance weight and the lower range.would be your goal wt, or allow a few pounds under if you want. It is the range you're most comfortable with. My ticker is set from 130 to 125. 13o being the top of my range and 125 being goal wt. for me. I allow myself 5 a pound fluctuation. I hope my explanation is clear enough!

I don't understand how you set your tracker to maintenance...can someone explain in detail how to do this?
Anyway, I am doing well..still a little uncertain when my weight goes up a lb or 2 .........why?
Wish it would just as easily do DOWN a lb or 2..why is that?
I have been really careful but I do experiment with things like "HOW much can I get away with?" Does anyone else?

Hi Gail, yes, I set mine to my maintenance range. That is what I'm focused on now. Would like to be near the low range instead of the top of the range. But I started the week out great and plan to stay on track.

I am not the most perceptive person. I am just noticing now (if I understand this correctly) what some of you are doing.

I am referring to your weight loss trackers...you have then set with your weight maintenance range...is that right? Cool. I like that idea. I think I am going to go do that right now.

Honestly after reading so many SP articles (I've probably read 200 so far), I just make healthier choices because I know what is good and not good for my body now. The more articles I read, the better I can hear the words in my head throughout the day "Have you had your fruits and veggies?" "Smaller portions" etc.

Now that I'm pretty much maintaining my goal weight, my next challenge is staying active in the cold Michigan winter! I'm home when it's dark out and there's ice everywhere! I guess it's just indoor strength training for me tonight...

Congratulations to everyone who has managed to stay within range and even LOSE during the holiday season. Tough to do.

I am still within range (101-103 but recovering from a busy weekend and a Christmas Party of my own. But back on track and keeping busy. I decided to start a new project just before the holidays. PAINTING! Burns calories and I am getting something done all at the same time.

Bcarson, congrats to you. That is quite an accomplishment. I'm at the high end of my maintenance range and as I've only been on maintenance for 2 weeks, I don't think this is good for the middle of the holiday season. So I'm back to tracking every calorie and keeping a better watch on how much I'm eating.

Here we are Dec. 10, and in spite of Christmas parties, etc., I have been able to maintain my weight so far. I made it through Thanksgiving without a problem. I exercised a lot.

So far so good for December. Hope to keep it up!

Great going Emily! It's easy to stay on track when everything is going great, but you have proved it can be done under great stress as well. I think you made a plan and stuck to it, fantastic! And a great example to all of us!

I have some great news to share! I haven't been on spark people for a week because I just had the busiest week of my life. I was out the door at 8 and working one job from 8-4, and then training for my new job from 4-10, then doing homework (for the new job) from 10-midnight. That lasted 5 days. But I didn't want my hard work of losing my weight (I was 140 when I started) to be out the window, so I actually was healthy this week!! I tracked my food every morning, and then packed my lunch and dinner in the morning. I got in some walking during my lunch breaks, shot for 8 cups of water throughout the day, and I ate really healthy!! I feel like I actually lost some weight too!! I think this whole thing is actually starting to become a lifestyle for me!! Also, before bed, I released all my stress by meditating and stretching for 10 minutes before bed. I'm just so proud of myself for beating the odds this week and doing it because I wanted to be healthy!

Scales can be fickle. I even wrote a blog about my two scales. So it is best to weigh yourself on the same scale.

I agree with Kayotic, all scales are not created equal, not that it really matters, as long as your (or the scale you regularly use) is giving you a consistent number then it's all right.

I have 2 scales at home. One does the body fat, the other doesn't. the one with the body fat weighs 2 lbs less than the other on - always. The body fat one is very very close to weight watcher's scale so i take that one as the more accurate one, and now I only use the one with the body fat scale to gage how much I weight.

Scales can be calibrated differently. I think it's best to get your weight from the same scale and go w/ that. But if you want true accuracy you can calibrate your scale to one you can verify the accuracy. I don't know how they calibrate the scales at the Dr's office, but if you think it's more accurate you could bring yours in and weigh on both to see what the difference is w/ the same parameters.

I'm maintaining, according to my scale! I saw one doctor Thursday and weighed 163 by his scale, saw another one today and weighed 164 by his scale. In virtually the same clothes, minus the shoes, I weighed 160.4 (yay!) today on a WW scale I have here at home. How can they all be so different? I used the WW scale, not because it weighed the least, but I had been using that scale all along for months.

101.4 -- still within my range. I think my body is finally starting to not crave junk, especially refined sugar. It took 3 week but I think I can keep maintaining at this level. I am even still reducing my body fat %!!

I am up a little, but now that my marathon is over I can focus on getting back down. My goal is to be back at my original goal weight for the start of the new year. I am going back to tracking for now.

New to maintenance here as far as SP goes but I maintained for a long time in my life before and feels so good to be back here, and exercising and eating healthy again. Marriage was not a good influence lol so now I let DH eat his junk and I eat like I used to!

This year, however, I'm not starting the month with a sinus infection. I'm hoping that since I'll be able to smell and taste my food without being sick, I will enjoy the smell and won't overeat when I enjoy the taste!

Hey, I'm just 3 pounds away...I'll celebrate being super close. I've been working hard since July, and I'm finally just 3 pounds away. That's just 3 weeks of tracking! Then I'm going to maintain--I can't wait for January so I can start maintaining. Anyways, I love the "party" theme because it pumps me up for all the really hard work I've put into making my body really fit:)

This is a great thread and just what I needed today. I've been down on myself because I am at the top of my "maintainance" weight range.

BUT...I am still within my range, so I will CELEBRATE!

And I have a plan to lose some of that to be a bit more comfortable. CELEBRATE!!

I am following that plan! CELEBRATE!!!

Thanks for reminding me to look at the good things I am doing and not dwell on mistakes I have made. emoticon

Just in one month we're entering a new exciting new year! 2008

BUT!

One month at a time!!!

November was not an easy month for me to stay at maintenance.
What really helped me was JOURNALING EVERY DAY.
I still journal every day and find it very helpful to maintain. I've learnt to like journaling.
It's amazing how maintenance and losing the weight stage are really the SAME for me.
I'm really trying to eat very healthy and that became a great HABIT.

TO MAINTENANCE FOR LIFE!!!!!

This Monday, December 3, will mark two months of maintenance for me - Monday is also my regular weigh-in day so we'll see if I'm ready to party or not then! I've been eating too many sweets this past week but hope I will have burned them off by Monday morning. emoticon

I reached my goal mid-November and officially started maintenance right after Thanksgiving. I've been maintaining at one pound below my goal weight since then. I've given myself a 5 pound leeway and hope to stay within that range thru the holidays by continuing to keep my food journal and exercise.

Towards the end of November the scale read 2 pounds above my goal range..so a few days ago I went back to basics..logging all of my food and cardio. Hopefully I will be back in my range in a week or two. emoticon

How about having a fun "Staying at goal and maintaining" party during each month, right here, on this thread.
A NEW thread will start at the beginning of each month.

If you're within your maintenance range, WONDERFUL!
Celebrate it!

If not, ABSOLUTELY GREAT, because you cought it just in time! NOW! in NOVEMBER 2007!
Evaluate what caused you to slip, the situation, and where it might have occured.
See that you can learn from your slip.

REMEMBER!!!
Slips should teach you, not defeat you!

Forgive! Forget! and Move on!

NOTE!
If you're within any goals that you've set up for yourself for maintenance, it's time for a party!

JANUARY 2008! Here we come!

ONE MONTH AT A TIME! emoticon

MAINTENANCE FOR LIFE!!! emoticon emoticon emoticon
