Oddly enough, I believe eating more frequent but smaller meals is supposed to boost metabolism. I try to eat 5-6 times a day, but the evening meal gets strung out into the evening snack time as well. It's just a bad habit I need to break. I think if I try eating more earlier, I won't feel the need to eat so much at night. I can't hurt to try it, and see what happens.

Definitely! I don't think (or know) I am clinically hypothyroid but I think I was seriously headed in that direction and losing 50 lbs and exercising, plus holistic medicine has averted it. I think I need to adjust my body to higher calories gradually and I will be able to eat more eventually. Definitely can be a slippery slope though!!!

Anna, your hypothyroidsim does make it harder to rev up your metabolism, that is a good point. I had the opposite problem about 15 years ago, I was hyperthyroid, it was miserable.

I do work out a lot, and I think I have a good amount of muscle, so that does increase my calorie need, but I still have to be careful not to eat too much, I get into some bad habits, especially at night, so need to be mindful of what and how much I'm eating.

It's all part of the process...

Anna - your starting weight is very close to where I was when I started. And your present weight is close to where I am now. I am around 132. How long did you take to lose your weight? (if you don't mind me asking)

I followed weight watchers. I never went to a meeting or weigh in but I follow their program. (didn't know about sparkpeople then)

I feel I have a pretty good metabolism (God only knows how bad I had to eat to get my weight up to 190)

Not one week did I cheat while I was counting points...I started on February 10 and by July 10 (5 months) I had lost 55 lbs.

How easy or hard was it for you?

Wow you are lucky, I can't imagine eating 2000 calories a day! I think metabolism varies, though muscle mass and exercise levels obviously plays a part. Actually when I started SP I honestly thought I would not lose weight at all, and had hypothyroidism and I do tend that way genetically, body type plays a part, DH is an ectomorph and can eat anything and not gain much weight, I am more of an endomorph and its not that easy! Its very easy for me to go into starvation mode too, I obviously came from healthy peasant stock!!

Gail, I'm with you on the eating! I don't understand the people who can't eat more than 1200 calories a day, I'm sure it happens, but not to me! I'm in your range, around 2000 cals/day. I guess we all are different in our eating, but if I went that low I'd be starving all the time. I do get used to less food if I'm dieting though, so maybe that is what they are experiencing. Wish I had that issue sometimes. My problem always seems to be that I never feel really full! (except the occasional thanksgiving type meal)

Anna - go for it. If you see your weight climbing use that as a signal to start charting for a couple days to get you back on track. That's how I have been doing it and it's been working well.

Gail,

I swear the things you write are like my very own thoughts! :)

Exact. Same. Struggle.

(And really, I think I'm done with struggle. Why can't I just eat 2,000 a day, be 130-something pounds, and run my arse off in joy??? You know?) :)

I find it so hard to understand how it can be a struggle to eat 1200 calories. :-) I would like to have that problem for a bit.

I eat well over 2000 calories a day...every day...and when I drop down to 1600/1800 I struggle with hunger and I am up between 5 and 6:00AM for breakfast...

But then again I shouldn't complain, I am maintaining my weight and I do feel well, so that is the main thing. Some days I wish I could lose about 5 pounds and maintain at a lower weight but I don't see that happening.

My weight has not changed since March but my body composition has continued to improve. My calorie range is over a 500 calorie spread and I try to eat in the low to mid range. Earlier in my journey I tended to not eat enough and have learned that my body needs calories to utilize fuel and burn fat in response to my activity. Over the past three days I have been at the high end of my calorie range but have exercised each day which helps. Each one of us is different and you will find what works for you.

I think what you have done will work. It's really about finding what works for you. That is a good strategy, and you will ease into maintenance that way. Those numbers aren't really all that different, and you get some room to experiment w/ an extra snack, or addition to a meal here and there.

Looks like you are on the right path!

KAYOTIC, what I did was to extend the time in which I wanted to lose weight. SP upped my calories to 1390-1700. Before it was 1200-1550. I'll see how I do on that before upping it more. Thanks!!

I still feel as if I'm learning to maintain. Since I stopped to maintain when I was still overweight (for medical reasons), spark thinks I want to go lower. I've gone higher than they suggested with only a 10 oz. gain. I try not to do that all the time since I don't want to find myself in big sizes anymore. At any rate, seems as though I'm still experimenting.

I don't try to stay anywhere in particular in my range, but as long as I stay between 1500-1800, which is what SP gave me, I'm good. :)

I NORMALLY stick to the lower end of my calorie range. Unfortunately, the last 3-4 days, I've been over my high range. emoticon I need to get back on track!!!

I'm still experimenting with my range, though, to find out what is ideal for me. I stuck to around 1600 calories a day the other week and seemed to hold steady. It can be frustrating, though, that I burn around 500-600 calories a day and still have to stay at 1500 to 1600 caloric intake. But whatever works!

That sounds a lot like me Lisa, if I'm doing something really calorie burning, I don't worry about the calorie intake so much. Those 3-4 hr + workouts on the weekend can really burn a lot of calories, and restricting at that time will only hurt in the long run.

I should take a cue from you though and hit some low calorie days too, although I have been really trying to eat "clean" lately, and get in more fruits and veggies.

I heart Gail. emoticon :)

(Me too. Usually over 2,000 per day.)

I got a little cocky recently, however, so I started tracking again, trying to get my mind in order before the Chirstmas blow-up.

I think that my Spark-given range is too low, so I set my own goal a little higher... I made it 1,650 - 1,950. I tend to eat mid-to-high in that range, usually 1,850 - 1,900. I like to have a low-end range day every few days though, to keep the body guessing.

I consider it a 'good' day if I'm under 1,950 at the end of the day. Saturday I considered 'good' too, however, and I was at about 2,350 calories. It was 'good' considering I'd burned more than 1,400 with my distance run.

So in the end... For me, it's all about what I'm doing. How active I am. What I want my weight to be. Etc, etc. :)

I very quickly lost 5.5 pounds (2 weeks) going back under 2,000 per day, so I will probably bump it back up to a max of 2,200 +/- very soon. I don't want to go much under the weight I'm at currently, I just wanted to get back here. :)

Man I ramble! ;-)

Like Robin, I've not been tracking lately. When I did I was about mid to upper range, w/ the occasional dip to low, or above about 50 or so.

I recently started tracking when I found myself stuck above my goal weight too long, and came down quickly at around 1900 cal/day. I think that is about mid/top range for me to lose.

I haven't tracked for a while...when I did I tended to stay in the mid to high range most of the time. I feel like I am eating more lately but my weight has been pretty stable within my range so I'm not worrying.

I tend to stay more in the bottom range of my calories as per Sparks because any higher and I start gaining. I will occassionally go over the mid-range but it is extremely infrequently and only when I've been doing a considerable bit of activity - like yesterday when I went skiing for 10 hours.

I actually started gaining a bit back when I ate as much as the sparkpeople recommended so I scaled it back a bit. I generally eat between 1200-1600 cals. a day now and it seems to work well at keeping my weight steady. Sometimes I go over, but I never go under it.

I tend to hover about 150-200 cal. over the lowest amount. I guess that is mid-range. Sometimes I go all the way to the top. I admit to rare days when I go about 50 cal. over. When I say "rare", I mean it's been about 2 times in the last 3 months.

I never go under my calories.

Great question!!!

I'm still struggling to stay at the bottom of my maintenance range!!! My SP range is 1750-2100 and most days I average between 1100-1400. I tend to eat more on the weekends where I may get to 1650. But those seem to be empty mindless snacking calories which I am trying to avoid. I had one day a few weeks ago where I mindlessly ate 700 calories in rice cakes and still didn't go over my range!!! Today with 3 meals and 3 snacks I'm still only at 1164 calories for the day!!!

Hi, I've been in maintenence for almost a year. In that year I've learnt to eat near the bottom to mid range. If there is an "occassion" ie:-party,b/day dinner etc...I indulge at the top of my range.

I never go below my range ever. But yes, my hunger varies from day to day, so yes it's a mix from bottom to mid range.

So for those of you keeping track of your calories through SP, what does your day look like for your caloric range? Do you stay towards the bottom, middle or top of the range? And do you do that every day or do you mix it up? emoticon
