My dogs had raw beef heart (even organic) for dinner tonight and they were all crazy about it. Price was $2.49/pound, pricey but worth it. We feed raw meat every other day for one meal or as much as we can afford it.

I didn't know until my dogs were being fostered by a friend of mine while I recovered from major surgery that grain caused a lot of the digestive problems in dogs. In my dogs, that meant ANY grain. A couple years ago when Blue first was diagnosed with Masticular Muscle Myositis, my vet told me that he fed Taste of the Wild because his dog also had the digestive problems caused by grain. For a vet who was completely traditionally trained, he has a very open mind and when Blue had problems eating the Taste of the Wild he told me he was glad to see me feeding him the raw diet. That one totally surprised me. I did have to go to the frozen raw patties because he had trouble picking up the ground beef, but if I cut chicken up small enough he could manage it.

I am another Taste of the Wild person. My dog has a loves it. I use to feed him Blue Buffalo but he kept picking out the little vitamin things in that food. I was getting sick of stepping on them all over the house. My dog also has a weak stomach and some other dog foods get thrown up. So far Tast of the Wild has been great for him.

I am the thread killer! Fear me!

For Venture, soaking the food doesn't help. just a tablespoon of canned food on the dry and he will eat everything. He is supposed to have as natural of food as possible;

I'm wondering if you have ruled out a dental abscess? The symptoms (of not wanting to eat, especially dry food) sound a lot like it. Maybe a dental at the vets would rule this out.
Does it make a difference if you moisten the food about 15 minutes before feeding or if you feed canned food? A lot of older dogs lose their sense of taste and smell and stronger smelling canned food is more attractive to them.

Venture has been really picky about his food lately, too. I had him on Nature's Variety because I had a coupon, but he has left half the bag and just won't eat it. I have had 3 or 4 sample bags that he liked all but one (he didn't like Origen, which I think is the most expensive you can get here). Usually he has been eating Taste of the Wild, but he isn't eating it as well now either. I think that his mouth and teeth are bothering him. He is almost 16 and has never had good teeth and won't let me brush them. (He's bad, I know, and the fight is terrible) So I have been using a different dry food each time I get some and getting small bags -- all natural foods. Last time was Nature's Recipe Grain Free and now I have Wellness Core, which is also grain free. I have also been putting a couple big spoonfuls of canned or else something like raw chicken or beef in with it. Tonight he is also asking for summer squash and took the peel out of the trash to eat. To help his teeth I add and essential oil blend called Thieves to his water.

our female mini schnauzer had bladder stones emoticon so she has to eat Urinary So, she loves fruit and vegies, and gets put out now that her diet is restricted. Our male schnauzer used to eat Blue Diamond, but it started making him sick. So now we are trying science diet ideal balance, he is so picky.

My dogs have eaten Purina Pro Plan Weight Management for years. They get a measured amount morning and night, moistened, with a spoonful of Beneful (not that they won't eat it without). Our vet is happy with their ideal weights, and so are we. They get a few dog treats before bed every night, but no snacking from our meals. Of course they get some turkey on Thanksgiving and Christmas, but those are holidays! LOL

The biggest favor we can do our dogs is to read the ingredient labels of their food. Chicken or beef by-products are actually a much better ingredient for a dog to eat than wheat, corn or soy of any kind. With dog food you usually get what you pay for. The bargains are rarely a bargain.

I used to feed my dogs Taste of The Wild but they kept getting the runs and throwing up. I slowly switched over to Nutro Naturals Chicken, Rice and Oatmeal for sensitive stomachs. The are doing good no more problems.

We get a brand called 4 Health that is sold only by Tractor Supply Co. It is the only one we have found that doesn't have by products in. Everything is whole grain, vegetables, beef/chicken/or rice. Of course they enjoy a "snack" from our meal after we have eaten our meal & not from the table.

Thank you, I think I would get bored with eating the same food for 11 years. He does eat the other food I put in his dish, but leaves the kibble. I have an idea of new foods to try. I can see I haven't spoiled him too much. Thank you all. You are a great bunch. emoticon

We've tried a few different ones but now feed her Beneful Healthy Weight and she loves it. My hubby gives her tidbits from his plate and I keep telling him its not good for her. My mom used to cook ground beef and rice for her dog; think her vet recommended it at that time.

I feed Zoey a brand called Infinia, I think that is the way it is spelled. It is an all natural with meat as the first ingredient and has no fillers. She has allergies and this helps.

We feed Natural Balance Dry Food, and mix in a little Chicken, Beef, Turkey, Yams, or Pure Pumpkin.

Unfortunately most dogs like processed crap just as much as we do. Stuff that's too sweet, too salty and too processed and too high in carbs. Don't give your dog what he wants if it's not healthy. Feeding chicken and beef (with some cooked rice to make it more affordable) provides much better nutrients than most dry dog food.
Having said that Taste of the Wild is a pretty decent food. Look for foods with a meat as the first and second ingredient. Also, consider feeding your dog a raw food diet consisting mostly of raw meat and bones, but do your research thoroughly first to do it correctly.

Lenny has food allergies with most commercial dog foods but found that he can eat Nutro Herring for sensitive dogs. I have to special order it but he likes it fine and his coat is gorgeous.
I get a large can of dog food and freeze it in small round ice cube tray and put the little balls in a freezer bag. One can last a very long time and he is thrilled with it for a treat!
Also he gets a spoon of cottage cheese or a hard boiled egg yolk almost every day.

My dog also eats Taste of the Wild. I feed it to her twice a day. Sometimes we give her a little meat or fish after our dinner, but only a few bites.

Maybe once a week in this heat she doesn't eat her breakfast until near dinner, so I just let her skip one.

I agree with the last comment. Maybe it's time to see the vet if she won't eat regular dog food.

Good luck.

emoticon Jackie. My dogs eat Taste of the Wild with a little canned Dogswell. I rotate between several varieties of both. I add a tablespoon of plain yogurt to the evening meals. Radar sometimes skips a meal. If he doesn't begin eating in 15 minutes, I put it in the fridge until the next mealtime.
If he continues to refuse food you should probably have him checked by the vet, just to make sure.

Our dog likes most of the commercial dog foods and I purposely don't start to make him dog food because then he might not like the commercial stuff. Don't forget that if he is hungry enough he will eat no matter what it is.

Hi everyone, My dog is 11 and has gotten tired of his dog food. He use to love it.. He does get treats mostly milkbones he still loves these, we have been careful about giving him too many things. I may have spoiled him, because he hasn't wanted his food. I have been making him chicken and rice and beef. What do your dogs like?
