years ago we took out all the carpet in our home, just couldn't keep up with the doggy accidents and resulting odor and stains. Also got a leather sofa to replace the upholstered one. Odor in the home has been dramatically reduced since those two changes. I have one princess pup who has this idea she shouldn't have to do her business in bad weather, like she's thinking, No big deal, I'll just "go" in the house and that nice lady will clean it up.
Much easier on bare floors, I must say.

Oh, Dot.......so sorry that you have this to deal with. My daughter in law got cellulitis in her leg from a cat scratch and had a horrible time getting it healed up. Staying in antibiotics for 3 months won't be fun but if it helps heal then it will be worth it.

DJ is much better today as the temp is a little warmer. His allergies are still kicking in so he is itching some today.

Thank you so much. I really do appreciate it. It would be really nice if this leg did heal all the way and stay that way.

Hope everyone will enjoy their day.

Hello All,

Sorry for not coming back on sooner. I have been trying to deal with some things that have to do with my leg still. I went to the Wound Center a couple of times. I have to wear a Una Boot on my leg because the stupid infection is trying to come back again. I asked the doctor what he thought was causing it and all he told me was that some people take longer for infections to completely go away. I am also back on Antibiotics for 14 days.

I am glad that they are trying to stay on top of it so it doesn't get as bad as it was last time. The doctor also told me that some people have to stay on antibiotics for 3 months. I hope that I don't have to do that.

I really just want to be over this thing with my leg. I want to move onto something different. Not another infection or sickness though. This has taken a lot out of me. I have to go to the Wound Center almost every 2 days. I am so tired with it all.

Hope that everyone is doing the best that they can. I know that sometimes things get to be hard to deal with. But if we just hold on and wait long enough it should go away.

Best wishes to you all.

Hope everyone enjoys their day.

Best wishes to all!

Yesterday, the cool dampness caused DJ's arthritis and allergies to flare up so had to give him both pills. He got both again this morning as he was still itching and struggling to get up. He is sleeping now. We are supposed to be in the mid to high 80s the rest of this week so that should help him.

Isn't that the truth, BeckyAnne........I will have a big mess when my granddaughter moves out.

Much cooler today.......very nice......hoping to get my mower back in working order soon so I can get the yards mowed again.

Critter is enjoying this cooler weather as long as it doesn't bother his arthritis.

That's good news John!

June 1st already. The weather isn't June weather though. More like March weather.

Today is move out day for my DS and of course he hasn't packed anything. I'm going to be left with a huge mess. He's lucky that he has his mom and dad to help him out. He'd be lost otherwise.

Enjoy your day. It's Friday!!!

Way to go John

It's a much cooler day here...in the low 70s instead of the low 90s. We had another storm during the night that really cooled things down.

Weigh in this morning wasn't good-------up 6/10th pound.

Even Critter is itching less today.

John------so sorry you are in a slump. Can you get outside for a few minutes at work-----maybe during a break or during your lunch? Do you pack your lunch? If so can you sit outside and eat it or even walk around a parking lot 2 or 3 times? I find that "sun" therapy is very good for me.

Can you begin by taking a flight of stairs for one floor instead of an elevator? One step or flight at a time.

Do you use email at work? Instead of using email can you get up and deliver the message in person?

At home, can you walk outside for a few minutes each day? If you use the phone a lot, maybe walk around instead of standing or sitting while talking.

start with 10 to 15 minutes a day increasing by 5 minutes every 2 weeks.

Even marching in place helps.

John-any exercise is better than no exercise. Try setting small goals for yourself. Track what you eat and track your exercise. Sometimes it helps to put everything down on paper. Try reading some of the success stories here also. They may inspire you to get moving. I hope you can be that happy guy again soon. Good Luck and keep us posted on how things are going.

Maybe you need more motivation. There is a fellow called On2victory who is doing a great blog and one called John (sorry I can't remember much more, I set my pg to receive his blogs and they are amazing too. There is also a fellow called Coach Dean who does a bunch of motivational stuff for spark and it is also amazing. These are all great guys who have struggled and found a few answers they do a great job sharing. The two first guys are on The Slowest Loser Team. Good luck and you can always vent here. As long as it isn't bad words it is okay to state sadness, despair, etc. Try to remember the Almighty in your list of things that help. Prayer has helped me more times than I can remember.

Marie-----that salad sure sounds good.

Dot----hoping your leg gets better.

It's going to be another hot humid day here-----in the 90s again. WE had quite a storm go through at 2 AM with thunder, wind, and hard pouring rain which lasted about 30 minutes.

hey Imaging .... i pray the doctorswill have skill & wisdom in treating your leg issue. hopefully, you'll be able to have the campfire tonight.

we've only lived in AZ for several months and i was shocked at not only the amount of wind that there is, but also the speeds it can get up to! who knew a desert could be windy? i sure didn't!

hubby came up with a great idea for a salad with cold chicken breast, green onions, braeburn apples, celery and slivered almonds. the only downside was using regular mayo & ranch style dressing. very tasty tho!

hope the rest of the team is having a wonderful Memorial Day weekend!

Hello from Carthage, Missouri,

I have a 120 pound Alaskan malamute that is a natural pulling dog, so I bought a pull harness at Walmart for $10. It goes on like a harness and then goes under his front legs around the belly area----it works great for him. I can walk him without any problems even with other dogs and/or people around. He loves people and will pull me over if he doesn't have this harness on. It is padded around the legs so doesn't rub on him.

Have a safe holiday and Blessings to all service people both past and present and their families. All are so appreciated.

Sure hope your leg gets better soon. What a worry for you. Our weather here is similiar but we hold no hope to eat outside I will just make my soldier boy (old husband) some chicken stew with dumplings, a recipe I got from Spark and he loves it so much. He finally thinks I might get to be a cook on the level of his mother. High praise indeed!

Hello All,

Hope everyone has good weather today for Memorial Day. Maybe planning a cookout or other outdoor activities. We might be getting showers or thunderstorms during the day. We are currently cloudy and the temp is only 63. I hope that the sun comes out sometimes today.

We were hoping to have a camp fire last night but the wind came up and we couldn't have one with that. So we're hoping that tonight we can. I hope that the showers aren't too bad or last too long.

I have to go back to the Wound Center on Tuesday because my leg has a red section that looks like it wants to do something. Maybe a rash. The new compression stockings are keeping the swelling down though. I am sure that I will have pain in my leg for a long time. I just want this red section to go away and stay away. Also, having it warm to the touch, needs to go too.

Hope everyone gets to enjoy their Memorial Day.

Best wishes to all!

Sorry for your loss PANFRIEDTROUT.

We tried the harness on Lola , but it ended up rubbing under her front legs. We even had it fitted on her before we bought it. We now use a poke collar and that really seems to help.

Have a great holiday weekend everyone!

my day started kind of rough ~ i hadn't been up an hour when i got a call from a close friend that her sister (and also a friend of mine) had passed away unexpectedly. She was young ... under 50 and the worst part is that all i could do was try and console her over the phone.

we won't be leaving AZ & heading back to Oregon until the 2nd week of June. i wanted so much to just wrap my arms around her and pray with her and for her.

as far as my Spark journey ..... i haven't been able to do any meaningful amount of exercise these last 3 days because of injury to my right hamstring. it's OK tho as "this too shall pass".

I use the Gentle Leader® Harness with really good results on my dog. Although, for additional security, I clip the leash to both the harness and his collar.

I use a harness that is supposed to tighten under her legs when it is pulled. But I think it does not do a good job on her. I need to try a different harness. The one I had for a bigger dog was wonderful. this one just does not work well.

John, Great Idea. I well give the short leash a try. After I get the exercise walk in then I well let her do her own thing.

Mark!
Great question we have two types of walks at my house
1) the excersise walk The leash is very short Duke has to walk right next to me in the heal position, this keeps him for wandering and getting into trouble This walk is for excersie for him and me both a faster pace and no time to slack off

2) this is Dukes walk longer leash ( i do not like the retractable ones ) and it is his time to sniff and "water" and just be a normal inquisitive dog! try this with the short leash and see how it goes

Yesterday the wind was blowing really hard so I did not go out for a walk. Had to laugh at the birds trying to use the bird feeder. Several kept being blown off and I watched one that landed on the ground actually get blown over.

Took an extra long walk today to make up for yesterdays lack of walking. Took a bag of treats for Abbie and every time she would stop so sniff I would tempt her with the treat but not give it to her tell she walked away from what she was sniffing. It worked really good for the first half of the walk and then she kind of said "Forget the treat I want to sniff". So I had to resort to towing her away from for sniffing.

I am on several teams that have a general chat thread and it is fun and very informative to participate in them. Each is so totally different.

We are on the way home and we are finding the heat and storms to be the same in the north as we went through in the south. Temps are running in the low 90's or upper 80's with winds that don't stop. Glad we are stopped through the Holiday.

Hope you all have a wonderful Memorial Day. emoticon emoticon emoticon

a Daily Chat thread .... what a great idea! maybe the Team Leaders can make this a "Sticky Topic" so it doesn't get lost amongst all the other posts.

dH finally asked me to make him a Spark account as he's seen that i'm getting results (no matter how gradual) emoticon

we're leaving our AZ house for a few months & going back to our OR house so we don't absolutely die from the heat. that, and we want to spend lots of quality time with his daughter and the grandkids.

as for the furbabies sniffing anything /everything and resisting leash tugs, all I can say is thank heavens we took both of our Pyrs thru basic & intermediate obedience training. not that that guaranteed 100% compliance *except* when being taken for a walk.

She is so stubborn that even when I tug on the leash she keeps sniffing. She seems to love Junipers for some reason. There are a lot of them here in the desert because they are heat tolerant. I have actually had to drag her away form things. I let her sniff some but it is annoying that she well want to stay for tn minutes if I let her.

She did do better today until we got to the first Juniper about 1/3 into the mile walk. I can not believe the force from such a little dog when she stops and I keep going, I almost get yanked around. lol

Dogs have 200times the smell receptors we have I can only imagine how wonderful and interesting the world must smell for them. We have no ideas other than the leash tugging. If they are off leash we keep going and they catch up.

Hi Mark. I will be waiting for suggestion to this question as well. We have 2 Chihuahuas and they love to keep their noses to the ground, stopping to "enjoy" the scents they find. They are little peddlers so when they are going we have a hard time keeping up. They are learning that when there is a tug on the leash, they tend to respond half the time. Any other incentives work for anyone?

Hi, It has been a really long time since I participated in this group. Dot, I am glad that your leg is better.

I have moved recently. My mom has dementia and my dad has enough problems taking care of himself let alone her. So I moved here to be with them and help them as much as I can. My girls are all grown up now and they are no longer needing me and I needed a change to improve my life. So this is for the good. I brought one of my dogs with me. It was a fight for me to be able to take her. But they have all the others and all ready have replaced her with a puppy.

Part of my staying fit and keeping active is to take Abbie for a walk every day. I was waiting till after my parents got up and we all walked. But life in the desert makes it difficult to go out at 11 in the morning. It is all ready to hot for Abbie and myself but my parents seem to be used to it. So I take her out early in the morning when it is still relatively cool and they go out in the late morning with me pushing them to the door. lol. We also all go to the gym every other day (except Abbie).

Abbie has taken on the bad habit of having to sniff everything while we are walking. She never did this before. I guess new smells for her to get used to. But how can I stop her from having to stop every ten feet and sniff? It is driving me nuts.

What a great way to get a quick update on where everyone is. Congrats on your leg getting better and on the Spring Cleaning. Myself, my house is a disaster area especially since I've had some handy man work done on the house recently. I have painting to do but that isn't getting done this weekend for sure. Thinking of trying to tackle some spring cleaning myself this weekend to include power washing the outside of my windows and dusting those horizontals that never seem to get done. That in itself will help greatly in the cleaning with a good vacuum to pick up not only mine but my two pets (dog and a cat) hair. I think I'll leave cabinet washing until next weekend though.

Weather this week has been pretty miserable with lots of rain. Hoping for a better weekend since I need to put in the miles I missed earlier in the week. Have a great weekend everyone!

Glad to hear you are much better and able to get with the spring cleaning. I know cleaning up always makes me feel a whole lot better. Since this is daily chat I will chat. We are slowly getting over the death of our darling Badi who died on May 6th on our way back from Mexico. Little Hobo the destroyer takes up a lot of the slack and did my heart good last night when instead of looking for things to chew, tear up and generally drive us crazy he was so tired from all the walking we did that he dragged his bed out to the living room and went to sleep. Short memories we have and we just looked at him and said how cute he is and what a good dog he will be someday after he grows up and we spend a lot more time training him. I have been up for 30 min. and he is still in his bed beside ours and sound asleep. I had to check if he is still breathing .

Hello All,

I thought it would be nice to have a Daily Chat section up in the beginning of the topics. I hope that everyone will join in using it.

Sorry for not being on more often. I am kind of doing or trying to do some Spring cleaning. I am tired of just looking at things pile up. It won't get done by itself.

Thank you all for the warm welcome back. I missed you all too very much. I really hope that I never have to go through that again.

My leg is doing much better. It is still discolored and I am still getting pain in it but for the most part it is as good as it is going to get. My foot too has been healed. It no longer bleeds, Thank you all for all the prayers and support while I went through that.

Our weather is doing better now. No more rain for a little while anyway's. Our weekend is suppose to be in the 70's and have a little breaze too.

Hope everyone enjoys their weekend.

Best wishes to all!

I will keep you all in my Thoughts and Prayers
