Wonderful start to my day - I think you all will relate! An especially enjoyable walk with my best 4-legged friend!
Following those little bouncy ears and that little pom-pom tail always puts a smile on my face emoticon

Harry always seizes the moment…when he comes across a patch of perfect grass – he pounces on it and scratches his back…pure joy!

And when he comes across a stick he takes it to his human…there’s always hope that she’ll throw it for him…I always do – but not until the end of our walk – walking with the stick in my hand assures that he’ll stay close to me!

Hoping that you all have a chance to get outside and seize some moments today!

Pura Vida!

I also heard that it's not all about the calories, but in conjunction with all the talk about Jared from Subway. The article said that people concerned about health are learning that it's not all about calories, but in terms of "healthy" fast food, people also want freshness.

If weight is lost too quickly, I've noticed that sometimes it takes a toll on appearance. A friend lost 45 pounds (she wasn't that heavy to begin with) over 5 months. She still looks terrible. Her face got so wrinkled and lined that she looks much older. she's 69. I think it's affected my weight loss goals. I still need to lose about 40 pounds, but I've been taking it slower. My aim is to lose it, but more gradually. I guess that I shouldn't let vanity get in my way, but don't want to end up looking like that.

I just heard on TV that there are studies out that show Drs have jumped on the wagon to get people to count calories and loose eight so fast that they have lose sight of nutrition and so weight loose is hurting people. SP is all about nutrition. When you put your food in your tracker look down near the bottom of the page and you will see our nutrition tracker. You can add any other thinks you need to keep track of. I hit a plato and found the tracker only to discover my calories were fine but, I was very low in protein. I upped my protein, the calories went up, but the weight started doing off.

Mary Alice, gotta love the storms!

I think you are right. Myrtle has figured a lot of the details of my home, but not the fundamental rythym. the vet was impressed with her health, suggested some practical strategies, and sent us off to learn to live together. Keeping my fingers crosst for a night's sleep ... for all of us!

You can't live a perfect day without doing something for someone who will never be able to repay you.
--John Wooden

Good afternoon, Today is the day I go back and forth between the two jobs. When it was time to go to the second one there where a few drops of water on the window, I didn't think anything about it. By the time I got down 2 flights of stairs it was blowing so hard it was straight across rain and the doors of the building were swinging. A guy in the lobby asked if the tomato alarm on my phone had gone off cause it sure looked like one and his phone hadn't had a worming. I told him mine hadn't either, but there wan no way I was going out in that. About 15 min later it let up and slashed to my car and went to the other job. Along the way I had to stay in the left lane because of water pooling in the right, except I had to keep getting in the right lane because of downed limbs. After I finished I drove the 20 miles home. It didn't look like it had rained at all. I asked DH and he told me it sprinkled a little but not enough to where he didn't have to water the plants. The weather station said we had a pop up shower. Pop up maybe, shower I don't think so.

That poor little dog might just be totally confused, after all no one has explained all this to her in a language she understands.

Her first owner (who died at 90) had her for ~13 years. . Nothing is known about this person, except I would say she hadn't exercised M. much, and hadn't offered her much petting-type affection. Myrtle was fostered by various people in Dog Rescue until she was adopted by the woman who had the stroke--who only had her 5 days, and thus is negligible. No vet records till she was fostered (~1.5 years ago). She's settled in well, all things considered; it's just the sleep thing that has me flummoxed. I have to say...I have had her just a week myself, so it's early days yet!

Is there anyone who knows much about her previous home, other than her owner had a stroke? Perhaps that person had the days and nights mixed up. I hope that the vet can give you some insight into it. There have been ads running on TV showing a blind person whose days and nights were mixed up due to lack of vision. I'm wondering if either she can't see or was with someone who had those days and nights mixed up. Perhaps there's a canine version of meds that can turn around the orientation.

Good luck with her and God bless you for being so kind to adopt her and give her a home. I have 2 rescued greyhound racers and wish that I could be as good as you. I've lost too many dogs and haven't adjusted myself yet to taking in a very old dog and then losing them quickly. You are a special person.

The 'lots of love' part is easy. she doesn't like being confined, and is vocal about it. I think she feels safe in the whole house which she figured out very quickly--knows where the 'out' door is, and can find it from anywhere in the yard to come in; knows where all the dog beds and water dishes are....Yes, the demon of dementia is at the back of my mind, too, and she sees her new vet this afternoon. She seems perfectly happy pacing, just restless. I REALLY need to get her 'day' and 'night' sorted out before I go back to teaching...3 hours of sleep just isn't enough.

Have a vet check her. But some older dogs get dementia. The best thing for them is a small comfortable place where they have human contract, but it is their own and they can feel safe. There is a good chance it is just her confusion over a new place and a small place she feels safe and can call her own will help with that too. Going for walks close to your bed time might tier her out and calm her down. Then lots of love.

I mostly lurk, but wanted to share this. Last week I started adoption process for a 15-year-old "super-senior" Bichon whose first owner died over a year ago. Myrtle has been in Senior Dog Rescue since; she was placed one time, but her new mom had a stroke and couldn't keep her.

Myrtle is super sweet as well as super senior. Biggest problem is she sleeps all day and paces all night...even this would be ok, except that I think her full name is "Moaning Myrtle;" she moans, whines, even howls (never had a Bichon do that).

I have two other rescued Bichons (9-yr-old littermates) who spent the first year of their lives in a puppy-mill cage with no postive human contact. Myrtle's moaning terrifies them into trembling for hours. Result, the only rested member of our small family is Myrtle! She's been put on Trazodone, but it only quells (some of) the moaning, not the meandering. I would love suggestions from anyone who has had this experience (I've had 'senior' dogs before, but never when they hadn't begun as 'junior' dogs with me, so I knew their quirks).

Good afternoon, This morning DH and I went to the town center, outside mall, and walked. Early this morning it was over cast and there was a light breeze so the walkers were out. About 10 the sun came out in force and chased us all in, As luck would have it DH and I were in front of a book store with a Starbucks inside so we walked around the bookstore with cold drinks. Maybe it didn't last long, but it felt good to be walking outside.

What a wonderful, protective dog. It sounds as if you have a very special bond. I wish that my greyhounds were protective, but they don't bark when anyone comes to the door, just wiggle their rears while wagging their tails. On the positive they are the gentlest, most loving girls I've ever had. On the negative, if there was danger I'd be the one doing the protecting. Not sure how that would go, as I'm getting older, along with my Darlene. She's a black greyhound with a now white face, formerly black, but she's still lively.

I don't know how anyone can exist without a dog. There are a lot of folks like us out there. Today we went to Tampa (FL) to do some shopping at the West Elm store. It was so nice. There's a circular street in front of the store with a big island of grass and large trees. They were having some sort of program for people to bring their dogs. They had erected a temporary, sturdy fence and had a small agility course set up. There were all kinds of booths with dog related things and dogs all over. Many of the dogs were overheating, as it had gotten up to 99. The store was nice enough to let anyone who wanted to bring their pups into the AC come in. It's a small store, so it was a delight for a dog lover to shop there. I didn't get much shopping done, but got to pet many dogs.

When I got Mutt at the pound all they could tell me is he was he knew the ways of the country, wasn't house broken and didn't know what a collar and leash was. I had him a whole 2 weeks, he was doing pretty go on a leash. We came up on some dumped dogs, nasty aggressive dogs. He was between me and those dogs so fast it wan't funny. My staff was between him and the dogs almost as fast. He knew right then he protected me and I protected him. It has been 7 years and I still want him by my side when I walk. He is way more then just a dog.

They aren't "dogs" they are babies. Besides God loved them so much He gave them His name..

Mary Alice, you're right, they're not "just a dog". I hate it when people say that. My dogs have always been loving and faithful, much more than many people I know.

Your yellow lab sounds sweet. Dogs that adopt you and need a home have always been sweeter and more loving. They somehow know that you've rescued them. My rescued racers throughout the years have been so wonderful and very attuned to my husband and me. I used to take them to a nursing home for visits and the patients loved them.

Tonight my husband met a lady who was "fostering" a 2 year old German shepherd. He'll probably always be a foster, as their condo complex won't let them have big dogs. Just across the road is our area, which has no size restrictions on dogs. (why we bought this place vs the newer, more up to date ones).

It was such a sad story. A vet had adopted the dog and fell on hard times and couldn't afford to feed it. The poor dog had a full size shep head, but was way too small, short, and was so thin and emaciated. I hope with some good food and tender loving care he'll recover. The owner had just let him out, thrown him out, and luckily someone found him and turned him in to their rescue group.

All the great things are simple, and many can be expressed in a single word: freedom, justice, honor, duty, mercy, hope.

Winston Churchill

Good evening, On the way home from work they said we had a reprive from the 10 degree heat it was only 99. I was trying to decide if I was going to brave the heat and take the dogs out and we had a pop up shower. That settled it, the stationary bike it is.

Till Duke, yellow lab, adopted us, I have always had mutts and properly always will. People around here are always saying well it's just a dog. I so want to shake them no it's not JUST a dog any more then you are JUST a person. My daughter is not a dog person. I have to give it to her, when she was a teenager she saw another teenager kick a dog. Where the strength came from I don't know, but she picked him up and pitched him into a wood fence. Word got out that you better not let her see you mess with an animal.

Debbie, I wanted to thank the recommendation found here for the AdBlock. It really works. It's going to free up a bunch of time during my day. It's like a miracle. My husband found the software (free) and installed it, which was a simple install, even for me.

Good luck with the fostering. I can't foster anymore; I failed my first and only try. He was the only destructive greyhound rescue I've ever had. I think the people on the track had pumped poor Jackson up with steroids. He was a handful at first, but I found a good carpenter to repair the damage he did to some furniture and my closet doors. I've had 7 rescued racers during my lifetime, and all have been angels except Jackson. But I loved that boy. He was such a good dog after those steroids wore off. I can't stand people who abuse dogs, whether through cruelty or for their own profit.

Hi ; )

I've been MIA for a few days because I was ill. I missed the conversation on ads, but as I caught up today I finally heard people saying what I've been saying for months. I absolutely HATE that if I look at something on line and then go to my mail, it pictures everything I just looked at. The very worst was when the computer ad featured the movie I was watching on my cable's DVR. I'm checking into Ad Block today.

I got approved to be a foster for a national dachshund rescue. Now I have lots of stuff to read and learn, but I've quite excited.

Have a great day!

Debbie

Many thanks. I'll give it a try. What bugs me the most is seeing the ads pop up featuring something that I had seen online. I hate being tracked, really spooks me.

Lots of thunder again tonight in Florida. I think our greyhounds are actually getting used to it.

I have a free program on my computer that blocks most of the ads.it is AD Block and was a free down load.....it sure has made a difference in the number of ads I see.....it doesn't block all of them but does get about 95% of them..........the site I have the most problems with is "Jumbo Deals"....it will interrupt any program with their ads......this one I haven't figured out how to block it...hope this helps...

It sounds like you got some great buys. There's nothing like coupons and specials.

When we bought the thunder shirts for our greyhounds before July 4th (to try to help them stay brave through the fireworks), we ended up getting discounts at one of the large pet supply chains. It helped.

As far as the pop up ads go, I wouldn't mind so much if they didn't pop up every time that something is done on Spark People. Perhaps if one of the IT people could so something to get them to load faster or at least not load, for example, when you bring up a trivia question, then again when you try to answer and have to wait for them to load, then go through the whole thing for the next question. It's just taking way too long to do anything, going to have to cut back on participation here as don't have time to wait constantly. My computer is only a couple years old and don't want to have to go out and buy another one.

“A laugh is worth a hundred groans in any market.”
— Charles Lamb (Unitarian, critic, essayist, author)

Good Morning. DH asked this morning if I wanted to mall walk. I said yes, but wanted to get there early to miss the tax free rush. We got there at 9, the mall doesn't open till 11 on Sundays. But mace's opened at 9.

I wear pink everyday in Oct. For enough years so non of my pink blouses fit, I have worked where I could wear pink tee shirts. Even Wal-Mart let me wear pink tee shirts. I'm in an office now and need pink blouses. Macy's is a little over budget, but I decided to see if they had anything on clearance. I found 4 blouses, 2 were right at the top of my budget and 2 were over, but I really liked them. Wouldn't you know the two at the top of my budget didn't fit, the two over did fit. I liked them and decided that if I was careful and made sure I stayed below budget for the rest of the blouses I needed I could get them. I took my blouses to the register, the sales lady told my that any one that came in before the store normally opened at 11 got 20% off. Great now my blouses where at budget. Then she asked if I wanted to use my Macy's charge card. I haven't used my Macy's card in years. She checked it and the account was closed. She said if I reopened it I would get an additional 20% off for using a Macy's card and another 20% off for reopening my account. Now my blouses were well within budget.

I know Spark People needs adds to survive, but some of these pop ups are getting ridicules. I made it a rule not to buy anything from them, then thought about it and Spark People doesn't know that and it won't make any difference. I still don't look at them. A few times I've wished I could afford to use one of the pat sights.

My two greyhounds are bored. So am I. It seems like we'll need an ark shortly in Florida. It's rained steadily for a couple of weeks, torrential rains, accompanied by much thunder and lightning. My almost 13 year old greyhound, Darlene, had been terrified only by fireworks. Now she's added thunder to her list of fears. We bought her a thunder shirt, but it doesn't seem to be helping.

Luckily I have an exercise program mapped out by the physical therapist (for my bad back), so I can at least be busy logging in to spark people and doing the exercises.

Does anyone else have a lot of trouble waiting and waiting for all those pop up ads here to load? I now have my exercise band with me to keep me busy while I wait for Spark people to do something. It's driving me crazy. My husband got a long cable for me to direct connect vs using the wi-fi for my laptop, but still hasn't cut down the time much. Any suggestions?

Good Morning. Got both dogs bathed. I have Duke his bath and walked him to dry him off, came home to do Mutt and thought I wish I could just turn the hose on me. I was really feeling the heat after Mutts walk. Why can't I wash the dogs at 5 in the morning so I can walk them in the cool.

I'm reading a book called A Million Steps. It is about a guy that is walking a pilgrimage though France and Spain that people have been making for thousands of years. He didn't wear a pedometer, tracker or anything like that. He just figured how many stapes a 6 foot 4 man took to a mile how many miles he was going and added something in for side trips for meals or to visit a church along the way. It took him 28 days. In the book he takes about some of the other people making the pilgrimage. The group of woman, the youngest was 70, the mother and son team, the son was 65. the husband and wife team she was 70 and he was 78. He said many of the people were taking the pilgrimage because people from their church had been doing it for thousands of years and so they did it every couple of years, some did it just to say they did it and many like him were doing it because they had reached a crossroads in their life and needed some time off to thin, sort things out in their head without the distraction of life.

Life in abundance comes only through great love.
--Elbert Hubbard

Good Evening, I'm not sure why, but I came home with a headache. Oh well that's life.

When DD and I took the boys to the splash pad Tony complained is front tooth hurt. He is 6 and 6 year olds do lose their teeth so DD reached over to see if was loose. No it wasn't loose, not the hint of a wiggle, but there was a tooth behind it. DD took him to the dentist to have the baby tooth pulled. No can do. X rays revile Tony has too many adult teeth coming in. So Tony has an appointment with an oral surgeon to see which and how many teeth have to be cut out. The dentist says since all the extra teeth are on the top, his molars won't match up with his lower molars and he will have trouble chowing his food. besides most people have to have the extra teeth removed before they are 35 and as an adult there are more complications. And with a child if his teeth have a gap from the extra teeth they can put braces on and realign things easier. I sure hate to think of a 6 year old having to have his teeth cut out. Mom says it is because my younger sister didn't have all her teeth come in and has worn dentures since she was in high school. She says everything as evening out.

Ca't help you with meds, my little dog is 55 pounds. I was told that if you have a dog that goes nuts when you leave, leave for 5 min and came back, Then up it a few mins at a time till the dog realizes you always come back. Ive never had to try it so can't say for sure.
