They sound like a good dog. It looks a bit like my Norwegian elkhound on short legs.

It is a beautiful sunny day. We will select some boards from our old lumber pile to strengthen the flooring for our roof.

Since hounds are independent hunters, perhaps they are the most intelligent dogs. For example, the greyhounds chart their own race, don't need a jockey guiding them.

Hello! I'm new here and wanted to introduce myself. I have a 2 year old American Straffordshire Terrier mix named Hermione. I adopted her almost a year ago (March 16th is her Adoption date) and she is the sweetest dog ever. We go on tons of walks together. I live in Charleston, SC.

Here is a pic of her, excited to share news/information with you all. Have a great day!

Cherokee is beautiful. Also love the blue merles. My greyhound, Bella, is a "blue" greyhound. She attracts a lot of attention at greyhound gatherings, as there aren't that many blues around.

I love hounds, used to have Norwegian elkhounds and a keeshund (know they're not truly in the hound family). I prefer them to terriers, but it could be because I had schnauzers that I loved, but they were little terrors. Our little rat terrier, Cricket, is a darling. She's a sweet little dog.

It is funny to consider that sleek greyhounds and saggy bloodhound and the stubby basset hound are all in the same family. My favorite dog was an Australian blue merle pointer. She wandered onto my porch one day while I was watching a movie trailer for the Hunchback of Notre Dame. She became my Esmeralda, because I swooped out of my bell tower and rescued her!

I think that is a hound thing. Henley never gave me a kiss in the face, but he would kiss my hand. He was into sniffing my face, and eyes. He did give good hugs though. Cherokee does give us a kiss in the face now. I hope she stays like that, but not holding my breath. Each dog is different. Speaking of Cherokee. I took pics of her yesterday.

Thanks. She's still limping, Cricket on rear leg, Bella on front. We got the Cosequin for Bella and it really helped. She's putting weight on her front paw now. The vet in St Louis x-rayed it and said it's probably from an old racing injury. They don't get much health care on that darned track. I think it will take a while for that Cosequin to kick in.

Thanks, Teester. Watching greyhounds run full out for the fun of it is beautiful. I was at one race when attending one of those greyhound reunions, and I was tense the entire time. Too many of them fall on the tracks that often are not well graded. I didn't want to hear the screams of a grey who broke a leg. We were lucky, and I never went back to a track. I only went because it was part of the program of the group.

Poor little Cricket isn't doing much running, at least not on 4 legs. She's pulled up lame on her left rear leg. She's only about 5 now (the shelter wasn't sure). We're giving her Rimadyl and some Cosequin. I don't have a vet in Pensacola, but might have to find one pretty quickly if she doesn't respond.

PICKIE, I considered making a travois that Shellie could drag around, but she assured me that the gun shots would hurt her ears.
GREY DOLPHIN It is neat that there is a gathering where the old greyhounds can race, just for fun. I hope that you can find a way to take both Bella and Cricket. It is great to watch any animal run.
I CAN HARDLY WAIT TO GET MY 410 LEVER ACTION SHOTGUN. EVERYONE SAYS IT HARDLY KICKS AT ALL. SAW A VIDEO OF A GAL TURKEY HUNTING AND A GUY SHOOTING METAL TARGETS. I THINK I AM GOING TO LIKE THIS,

Tee, that sounds like a wonderful day! I can relate to that shoulder thing., I remember the first time I used my Dad's 30.06. I almost dislocated my shoulder!
Too bad you don't have a little doggie cart to take Shellie with you to help haul all of the brass out! That would be a very cool addition.

Sounds like a fun time. I've been to the shooting range with my husband near Sarasota, Florida, where he used to belong to a gun club. I can identify with the bruised shoulder. A friend of DH's wanted me to shoot his Garand M1 rifle. He asked me if I wanted to try again and I declined.

I used to go to greyhound gatherings in Abilene, Kansas. The retired dogs would have a good time running on the track and we would enjoy going to some of the Western reenactments, plus going to the Eisenhower Presidential Library and the Greyhound Hall of Fame.

Now those good times are gone. We wanted to go to the greyhound gathering last June in Abilene, but they wouldn't let Cricket come, said she's too little. She's so dependent on Bella that she'd go to pieces without Bella and us if we left her with a dogsitter.

What a fun day. I like how they came up with more awards. Showed they were happy you and Brie helped with anything you could. That's team work! I love the old History too. Glad you had a good time, and are mending. Oh, and also good new people were interested! emoticon

First Sunday of the month is our cowboy shooting competition.  We got to the Fort Bliss Rod and Gun Club at 8am.  We brought our rakes and spent the next 45 minutes raking up brass while the guys set up the heavy targets.  But we decided to sit out the competition this month due to injuries.  I still have a bruise on my arm from two months ago from that 12 gauge double barreled shotgun of mine.  And Brie injured her trigger finger while working on the roof last week.  But we busied ourselves for the next two hours by hurrying out to reset targets after each competitor finished his shots.  There were several new people observing with the intent of joining us next month, including two married couples.  More women competitors!
After the awards were handed out to the best shooters, there were still a few left over.  The treasurer of our group then started making up categories, like: best observer, and best brass raker, and best target resetter!
Afterwards we all eat lunch in the Rod and Gun Club.  While eating, we are regaled with stories from local history.  The treasurer is also a history professor at UTEP, University of Texas at El Paso.  He and the president of the shooting society are well versed in El Paso history, often doing re-enactments of  gunfights at local events.  Being a history buff myself, I always enjoy hearing their tales.
All in all, I had a great time and worked off some calories.  I didn't have my top hat and costume with me, but my straw hat, flannel shirt, patched blue jeans, and work boots were close enough to fit in. I dress like a ranch hand most days of the week!
Brie and I will both be mended and in competition next month, where we host an additional stage of the competition featuring long distance targets.
We returned home after our two day absense. Our old dog Shellie greeted us joyously and I treated her with a piece of my buffalo burger patty!

I feel like a softie--been griping about it being 50's in NW Florida. My son in St Louis has a dog walking/dog sitting business and he's out in all the cold. Our little and big one don't like going out if there's a raindrop outside, but surprisingly when we were in St Louis ran around in the snow (it wasn't deep).

It helps that Bella, the greyhound, is almost 9, but she's still galloping through the house. The Cosequin really helps her. Bella looms over little Cricket. Bella is a relatively smaller greyhound, but still a big, tall dog. They look so funny together, tall and lean vs short and chunky. One thing little Cricket loves to do is eat. She gets over her shyness with us (after over a year) by batting us with her little nose or paws when we're eating. She wants her "cut" of our food. I'd say that she was being starved before the shelter took her in, but she was pudgy when we got her.

Someone must have done something terrible to her before we got her. The shelter would only tell us that a rescue group got her after seeing an ad on Craig's list saying she was available to the highest bidder. They said that she was better with animals than people. She's so close to Bella, but displays total fear of other dogs that she encounters on walks and is terrified of the neighbor's 2 big retrievers. There's a big board privacy fence between them, but she still shakes.

MaryAlice and Jeanne--I'd definitely call eating skunks a QUIRK!! I prefer Gigi's tubbing! LOL I'm thankful we have a fenced area for Gigi for when she's out unattended. Others on the property where we live have a dog who ALWAYS finds at least one skunk in the summertime and gives the owners something to do for the day! My daughter's Great Dane, too, has a way of finding skunks and she's spent a LOT of time trying to get rid of both the smell and the skunk...I bet she WISHES Harley would eat it, coz at least then it would be gone!! Her efforts to catch the skunk by hook or crook have given me a lot of chuckles (under my breath of course!)

Darlene and GREYTDOLPHIN-I like that your smaller furry pals seem to rule the roost. Gigi hasn't learned that about Cassie, our cat. I really have to watch over Cassie, who is 18 and readopted from my Mom who passed away in 2012. She doesn't have claws and as brave as she tries to be, Gigi's playfulness is boundless.

She has spent yesterday and today BEGGING to be outside in the cold- which has been in -teens and -twenties. We taught her to ring a bell at the door as a puppy when she wants out. We no sooner let her back in and she's right back at the door! Honestly, I think that's how I got half my 8,000 steps yesterday!

emoticon Enjoy the SUPER BOWL today! emoticon

That's funny that the dog will obey the cat. My 55+ lb greyhound lets our little rescued rat terrier boss her around. Cricket is taking over the dog beds and Bella takes whichever one Cricket isn't using. Bella is the toy dog--she'll be 9 this year and still runs around with her toys. We have toys everywhere. I have to be careful when I walk.

I have sometimes thought I smelled skunk around here, but haven't ever seen one here. I am glad of that since it is skunks that carry the rabies around here. They have been seen just a few miles from here. We have coyotes, foxes and raccoons though.

I don't think Cassie has any quirks. At least not that I can think of. Orzo (cat) likes to drink bath water and then lie in the tub after it's emptied. I was watching him wash Cassie's face today and she moved away a little. He complained about it and she immediately put her face back over and lowered so he could reach it. She could easily leave (44 lbs compared to his 9), but she obeys him almost all the time.

emoticon A skunk. Oh mercy. We get one in our area now and then. Last summer Henley walked into the house with a very faint odor of the Skunk. Luckily the waterless doggy shampoo worked. We have a wooden gate in the backyard. The Skunk must have sprayed on it. Then went on its merry way.

I don't know if you would call it a "quirk", but Duke likes to EAT skunks. He has never taken a direct hit. I know when he has had one because he leaves a skin on the back steps.

Mutt sleeps in his crate and it is under the table behind the recliner I sit in out of the time. Once my sun earned the living room and put the crate on the other side of the room. Mutt sat in the middle of the floor and cried.

Enjoying dog classes with Gigi. She's pretty good and I think the classes are for me!

One of Gigi's quirks: she likes to sleep in the bathtub!

Does your dog have a "quirk"?

We make peanut butter cookies. Henley had allergies, so we had to be careful what we gave him. Blue Dog Bakery is a good company.

They used to have a bakery here (I think it was a Blue Dog Bakery) that had all sorts of treats like that. The one I went to near me closed down, but there are places in town that do special baking for Dogs. I don't know if any of them make the cakes or anything like that. Krisers sells things that are frosted cookies shaped like cakes or bones with Happy Birthday on them. Cassie really liked her birthday treats from them.

I would like to try making her a "cake" like I found in a mystery book I read. It has ground beef patty and ground turkey patty that are held together with a spread of cream cheese and frosted with the cream cheese. I think that would have to be shared with a lot of friends, though, unless they were made really small.

When I lived in San Antonio many years ago, a group of ladies would always have a birthday party for their dogs. We gave them little pieces of meat, though, no fancy cakes. The dogs just liked getting together with their buddies and having a good time.
