(thanks Kiltore, I,m rather proud of myelf!)

Stayed indoors again. Actually spent time working on a gift for a friend. It involves stitching through four pieces of leather with white linen cord. I have punched holes in the leather, of course, but lining up all those holes is harder than I had anticipated. The beads wouldn't fit over the needle eye, so I had to take the needle off and hand string each bead into place. I succeeded in attaching one strap. The other will wait for tomorrow.

Had a good weekend. Relaxed Friday night, had daughter and her girls over on Saturday for dinner (her husband is an OTR trucker), and today son's family and daughter's family were here for lunch. The youngest granddaughter has learned to pose for pictures! She posed then had a crinkly nose and big toothy smile for us while she laughs about it. So adorable. She really liked the dog stairs to the couch but we all took turns making sure she didn't fall. Dogs loved her. The dogs love everybody but she smelled like milk to them.

Mutt and Duke were barking and i looked out to see why. They were standing in the middle of the backyard looking at something. so i went out to see that the problem was. They had a water moccasin. I brought the dogs in, and went back, the moccasin had taken full advantage of the dogs leaving and split.

I went next door to let the guy doing yard work know the moccasins where out. He asked why I didn't let the dogs kill the snake. Ok I know my dogs have killed many a critter that dared come in the yard, but my first thought was that thing is poisonous, and put the dogs in the house. I don't think the dogs have ever killed a snake and I sure don't want to find out weather or not they know how with a moccasin.

Sorry you had a headache I hate those things. I had a dog with med length hair once, I had never had a dog that needed groomed before, I didn't have a problem he came to me when he needed burs removed, I'm fond of lab/hound mixes so have short haired dogs

While in El Paso yesterday, my niggling headache developed into a full blown migraine. I massaged my aching neck while Brie drove us around. When she stopped for gas I bought a bottle of ice cold water and used it as a compress on my neck. She gave me a neck rub when we got home. I also used my frog. I have an electric massager shaped like a frog. Its legs have nobs on them which pinpoints the sore spots. After a short nap, I felt better. I awakened this morning at daybreak with a small headache. This time the meds took effect and a major headache was averted.

Any tips for DIY dog trimming? Shellie is my obese Sheltie, who loves to be outdoors (sleeping) het comes in with tumbleweeds and grass seeds stuck in her fur. She is patient with brushing for about three minutes and voids letting me brush her tail.

Love to see when they use rescue dogs to do anything good. Rescues have been given such a bad rap. In my 63 years I can't think of a cat or dog we ever had they wasn't a rescue. I also can't think of one that wasn't sweet, loving and very loyal.

The only one I ever had problems with was when i had custody of a young child that had seen things she should never have been exposed to, she had the worse dreams and was afraid of just about everything. The dog decided to be her protector. One of his things was no one could get between me and the child when we went for a walk. Many people got upset when a large dog pushed them away from me. he never growled or bite, he just wouldn't let them between us, He wasn't the problem, the people that didn't listen when i told them not to come close that where the problem. He also slept beside her bed, licking her hand when she had a dream. if she was sleeping quite not even I was allowed to bother her.

The child is a teenager now and lives with relatives, but I have contact. She is a normal teenager in many ways, but volunteers at a soup kitchen, is a feeder at a nursing center, in the band at school and talks about the dog that took care of her when she was little.

Thanks, the infection is in my face and neck. But can be seen inside my mouth where the check mets the jaw bone. Since it is in the mouth I'm seeing an endodotist I've seen 3 dr on my 4th round of antibiotics and had the mass lanced twice. I'm not in any pain, which is good and bad, Good that i'm not in pain, bad because it got so bad because I didn't have pain. It got so bad because I didn't know anything was wrong till it got bad. I went to the Dr because something wasn't right, I couldn't tell you what but I didn't feel right.

MY BLOG TODAY
I am back Sparking after a three or four year absence. I think I will have more advantages now, than last time.
My Sweetie and I are recovering from a major setback in finances. Her income was reduced by a third for five years (I call it create financing by the Veterans Administration, but I won't get on my soapbox now.) Last time I was here, some might recall that we were working on our roof. We can now resume construction. We also plan on erecting a wind powered electric generator and next month, we can mount better solar panels on our roof.
Meanwhile, we can set up a small propane-fired refrigerator so that we can keep fresh fruits and vegetables for snacking and healthy meals. We have already weaned ourselves from Ramen, which was our staple for several years.
I am now eating my recommended calorie limit. I just need to make healthier choices. A working kitchen will help us eliinate our dependence on pre-packaged food. Oh, part of our kitchen will be a greenhouse!
The weather is getting warmer, and we have been choosing Spark recipes which we can adapt for cooking on the.grill.
We should finish the kitchen before the year is out and get some propane fired appliances, too.
We will finish insulating the den this weekend and move our exercise bikes in there. I hope recumbent biking ill be easier on my joints than walking in the desert.
We bought a new Memory Foam mattress on New Year's Day 2016. I have been sleeping much better. I still get migraines once or twice a week, but my doc has prescribed meds that knock them out even once the have started. My stomach is happier because I am not eating so many NSAIDS.
And yes, I have health care. It took four years for the VA to provide it after our marriage in 2010. I am now her legal dependent and receive health care at a 20% cost to us. What a blessing!
Life has been tough, but we are tougher. I am looking forward to this journey to a trimmer, healthier me.

Got in two great hikes and playtime with Miss Lilo this weekend. With the warmer weather there is so much mud and she loves it. A definite tomboy she is!

A neighbor gave us Shellie a few years ago. She said that Shellie was 7. But she is probably closer to 15. Texas is full of stickers so sbe refuses to go for walks. She used to chase cattle, but now she sleeps most of the day. I want to get her xome doggie hiking boots so we can walk the runway together. (we have a mile long dirt landing strip) A few years ago we spent the summer in the mountains. She liked her walks out there. (me too) maybe this summer we can go to the mountains.

Mutt is a lab/hound mix. It is funny really. When I went to the pound they asked what kind of dog i wanted. I told them I wanted a Belizen Tiger Hound, but they weren't recognized in the US. I got Mutt instead. Turns out the Belizen tiger hound is a lab/blood hound mix and Mutt is a lab/ leopard hound mix.

MARYALICE411 You have really gr8 dogs from the sound of it. The house dog growing up was a lab/shephard mix and the best dog really. She wouldn't really sleep near anyone but preferred to curl up in her own space. Super social and protective. Thunderstorms and firecrackers I remember finding her shaking in the bathtub. She was a shelter pup but no problems beforehand. Just her personality. We have a chi/rat terrier whom was really abused. She has her own problems and we have to be careful. She has attached herself firmly to my 15 yr old daughter but Medb walks her 3 times a day and she keeps her with her; it's her best friend. It took months to get her to not shrink down with ears flat and look up scared. Been 7 months and she's perked up but if we even come near her or past her quickly, she will flinch and back up with tail down. We have to be careful. When I do exercises, I am attacked by our chihuahuas with kisses (hubby tries to contain) but Sandy (my daughter's new baby) learned to go in a quiet area near my daughter's room as she's not there generally.

TEESTER2- Cracking up as usual with your posts! Totally took for granted overweight babies (particularly Shelties :-). Is she older?

Lolli will roll for about a day after she takes her bravecto pill and will eat non stop the rest of the day. She's so little, it shows with in hours. Then completely gone by next day. Vet said it's normal with this flea pill. Steps normally intimidate her but she just lays there on those days. Luckily just once every 3 months. Once we move up north, changing her to a milder flea treatment. Fl just tough for that. She's miserable with even one flea on her so we got this from the vet and it works best for now.

I must have strange dogs. Mutt sleeps in his crate. When I got him at the pound they told me they found him under a shed and he felt safer under things. I got a crate put a sheet over it and put it under a table behind the recliner I sit in. I've had him 9 years and that is still Mutt's cave. If he is in his cave don't mess with him. Now that he is getting older he stays in his cave for hours. Duke the lab, sleeps beside the washing machine at night. I gave up and put his bed there. The only reason I can think of is when there is thunder, firecrackers or other loud noises, he bounces his ball of the washing machine. Maybe he doesn't like the noise and if he makes enough noise he can't hear it.

Shellie the Sheltie is too fat to jump on the bed. I gave her a pillow to sleep on but she prefers sleeping on the bolster which keeps the drafts from coming into the doorway!

JAVNMICH1969 My chi Lolli won't sleep anywhere but with me. My hubby's chi will sleep on a bed if we're moving around or she wants to be on her own. Bought doggy stairs some months ago for the bed; the 2 lb baby (hubby's girl) will bounce around, up and down, and fly. He calls her Kamikaze. My little girl is 6 lbs, much larger, and will comically cross her legs like a doe learning to walk before trying the first step, then gives up (sigh). She makes loud bird noises until I pick her up on our bed.

So, yeah, we gave up too lol. We did buy a cat play tent/bed and Lolli jumped right in and took over so I brought a stool next to the bed against the wall and the bed then put the tent there. The cat kind of looks at Lolli as she steals the poor cat's bed but I have more room to sleep now!

Happy Wednesday all!

The one that likes walks thinks chasing balls or sticks is stupid and tells you so. The one that likes chasing sticks doesn't like walks. The cattle egrets might get in the backyard while he is out.

Might have to work at it with treats and praise. Calling one over getting them to lay down and then giving the treat. Hopefully they will associate the bed with a happy place.

saying that though....if they are already accustomed to being on the couch...you've got a lot of work ahead of you...they want to be where you are...just might have to say off..over and over for a while..or take the cushions off the couch to block them.

Wishing you the best on this!

Let me know when you figure it out. One of mind will lay on his bed if I put it where he likes to lay, but that isn't where I want him. The other lys on the floor beside it and uses the bed for a pillow.

To all dog lovers- does anyone have any suggestions how I can get my dogs to use the new bed I recently bought? They are 4 years old and Butter used to eat any bed I brought home so for years I stopped buying them. Well I am getting new sofas so I bought one bed to see how they would do to encourage them to use the bed instead of the new sofas. I am surprised they aren't fighting over it. The idea was to buy another one once I saw that Butter didn't eat it. But they won't even lay in it at all It is a very comfy bed. I am perplexed??? Thanks ahead if anyone has any suggestions.

There has been another dog food (and cat food) recall. Evangers canned foods have been recalled due to apparently some chemical in the food. Has killed at least one dog.

Drug was a euthanasia drug.

Where was the show? We have the first ones here over the weekend of President's Day. Used to be 2 big ones at the same local, but they got split up. Well, that way I can afford to see one. Now just to be able to see the ACDs which usually end up at the 8:00 time frame.

I'm glad that Lilo is fine.

Your vet sounds like mine. He is such a sweet man. I can't remember if Cassie has met him. When she had a surgery Dr. Otero was her and Orzo's vet since she was recommended for cats. Then she told me Dr. Herman has cats, too. (He has about everything). It is great to have someone so caring to take care of our fur babies.

Hi!

Miss Lilo is doing fine. I took her in and the Dr said the pads up top there are mostly dead skin and though the cuts are deep, they are not to the leg itself so no infection or anything. He actually pulled a piece off and Lilo did not notice. While we were there he checked over her feet pads and said they look super. He commented on her teeth how white they are and her fur so shiny. He said she looks super healthy and to put Vaseline on the pads if I want. He said sometimes that helps them from getting so damaged.
He also put us in as a 'reexamination' so we were only charged half the normal visit fee! He truly loves Lilo and it helps. I found Dr Nick when my Jazzi girl got sick. He was the most understanding, loving, honest vet I had ever met. He was with us every step with Jazzi's treatments and honest when I asked if it was time. When it was my girls time, he was incredible and did everything possible to make her and our family comfortable. (yikes, it's been over 2 years now and the tears are flowing!)

Anyway, Miss Lilo is perfectly fine!

Thank you so much for checking in on her!

Huggles

I did wrap and put bitter apple around the area (not on the pads because I imagine that would sting) and that deterred her from chewing and licking. I am going to call the vet today and see if I should bring her in. There are bits of the pads just hanging and I am not sure what to do.

Thank you for your reply, I appreciate the help!

Someone on one of my Facebook groups had that happen to her dog. She also opted to wrap it. I never did hear what happened. I think I would wrap it if it was a small one, but if it was very large I would go to the vet. That's just me, though. I have a tendency to panic.

Looks like with the cold and frozen ground, miss Lilo tore her carpal pad. It almost looks like it was cut from the tip through the middle to her leg. It's a big flap. She has been licking at her front right paw for a few days and I could not figure it out and then this morning I went to touch her paw and she pulled it back. She only pulls back if something is wrong, which made me take a closer look.

Anyway, I think I will lightly wrap it and put some polysporin or something on it. Just for a day or two. I read that the flap might fall off or I should cut it off. I am not sure I want to go cutting anything off. Wish us luck.

Happy New Year!

As far as I know we didn't have anyone shooting off fireworks near me, but there might have been a couple that weren't very loud. More sounded like car doors closing, though. The city was setting some off from some rooftop, but the trees here block any view of anything nowadays. We used to be able to see them all around us just sitting on the back patio. Cassie, Orzo and I just spent a quiet night watching TV and saw the ball drop at midnight.

Happy New Year

The fire works started at 5P last night 1/4 a mile from our house and went on till 12:15. The early ones were just the noise makers, but I did go out on the porch at midnight and watched the pretty ones. I think there was a contest between one 1/4 mile to the left, one 3/4 mile in front and one 1/4 mile behind us. Made quite a light show. Mutt didn't get his evening walk, he hates firecrackers, and was ready to go at 5 this morning. We have a lot more freedom in the country, but then so does everyone else.

I like Dukes idea. He sounds like he likes fun. Cassie doesn't seem too bothered by noises as long as she is by me unless something bothers me.

We had a couple explosions about a week or so ago at about 2 or 3 a.m. Nobody knows what they were, but appeared to be in the parking lot by the school. I got my directions mixed up again, thinking they were talking about the other side of the school from me, but I now realize it was this side of the school. I kept wondering if it was something in my house. A little scary. That got Cassie a little worried so she kept looking at me, but didn't bother Orzo at all.

Where i live firecrackers are a way of life from the middle of Dec to the middle of Jan, but I know it is just starting for most of you. Remember most dogs don't like firecrackers You are going to want to have a safe place where they feel secure ready for them.. Mutt wants to curl to in his crate with the door closed. I will push the door closed but not latch it. Duke thinks if he makes enough noise bouncing balls off the washing machine he won't hear the firecrackers.
