With Exclusive, I do get a bag free for every 10? that I buy. It seems like less, but I do buy alot of food so it could just be me. It helps alot to go in and get an extra bag of food for no cost. I do rabies every 3 years, and DHLPPC when they are puppies and only occassionally thereafter. My cats are indoor only, so I don't vaccinate them at all.

Yes Colleen..it is the every 3 years..so far he has not been bothered by the dog warden, I am bad..he is not licensed yet....but...I know if I take him to the holistic vet..somehow they get around the rabies----may do that in 3 years...Cornell has a study out or something that the dogs here really don't need it, not much rabies here but it a ways to make money...

Beth - I had no idea that they weren't acceptable everywhere since my limited experience with another country (yeah Canada!) accepted them as does so many other places! EGADS!! That would scare me to have to innoculate Riley all the time as he gets these welting knots at the injection site and feels like crap for a day or two ... it doesn't seem to bother the other two but I still titer them as well before getting it done.

can you at least do the every three year rabies?

I wish Royal Canin would develop a program to turn in labels for free or discounted food. That way, people would keep their pets on the prescription foods and others would choose better food. Even a buy 10 bags, get one free would be FABULOUS. I feed Chicken Soup for the Dog lovers soul and have been VERY happy with it. It does wonders for my rescues which all come in with dry, scratchy, ugly coats and within weeks, they are all silky and shiny and put weight on pretty quick. I feed my Urinary cat Royal Canin 0S and it kills me, but after the expensive boys food, I have to buy cheap food for my other two. I wish I could afford the top of the line for everyone, but I have to at least say, they have homes and are being fed at least something. I have 3 dogs at minimum and 3-4 cats, plus what ever else I am rescuing.

I have two black labs and I have them on Purina One Large Breed puppy and Purina One large breed adult. They're two years old and 15 weeks. My vet said the Purina One has a little more nutrition than some others and that's what she gives to her dogs. Labs are prone to allergies and I noticed Abbey doesn't eat her feet or scratch so much since she's been eating it.

Beth - you can ask any vet for a titer test and those results ARE acceptable in place of a rabies vaccination as long as their levels are high enough ... I did that with Riley this year instead of just blindly going for the vaccine and his levels were all great, so he didn't need them. They are accepted by Canada when we travel there and the two places that we can take the dogs for boarding or day care also accept titer test results in lieu of vaccination certificates

Luckily we are in the position to do this for him.....he is my baby!!!
He will not get any more vaccinations(just got his puppy ones and that was it...and the DHPP was not given at the same time as the rabies...2 weeks apart)either unless his titer warrants it....if he doesn't need them he is not getting them...why put extra stress on his system...unfortunately, no way around rabies...UNLESS I take him to a holistic vet...

I have learned I will just pay the higher price, it is cheaper than the vet bill when Ru has a reaction. Every reaction is a vet bill, steroids, and antibiotics. But I do mix instant mashed potatoes with his canned and dry food. And of course Sundays he gets his burger & fries. (No bun of course!) And a couple a times a month Bonanza, half my sirloin and all my mashed potatoes! Tigger gets half the hubby's main course. They love it! Not spoiled are they! :) (Ru is 102 lbs senior citizen (11yrs now)Boxer/Mastiff. Tigger, our live wire is a year old 'Devil Dog', thoroughbred Plott Hound.)

Cooper has been on the Royal Canin Venison and Potato(16#=$60) for his elimination diet for his allergies....tried last week to get him on a cheaper food?? (27# for $73) of Venison and split pea...but he reacted to that....so back on the RX food from the vet....but I called Royal Canin today, trying to find a more economical way to get my 80lb dog his food...and they do make a lg breed RX Venison and Potato and its sold in the 35# bag(the other was only 16#)...called the vet..they just have to make sure no real changes and then they will order for me..I am thrilled though....this food will be 35# for 90$...but the boy has to eat.....he was on Eagle Pack holistic for about 13 months then the allergies started....the lg breed has the glucosamine and some heart things so I think it will be a go....

I stopped feeding grains too, I have been feeding Exclusive it is a Purina brand that is available at my local feed store. They are doing very well on it, I did switch to the lamb and rice formula though for my boxers allergies. And the cats love the exclusive brand too. Which it is very hard to find a cat food without grain.

Reading back through this thread made me laugh. I spend $50 on a bag of Blue Buffalo and it lasts about 2 weeks.
DH was complaining that I buy premium/holistic dog food and cat food but feed him generic brands. I told him he can have pepto if it bothers him but I have to take Stella to the vet if she gets sick LOL

Thanks CCRCCR & Aroostook, especially for the food suggestions! He has always had a sensitive tummy, so some diarrhea for him was never unusual! My sis lives far away (Virginia, I am in Mass) so I'll have to do the sourcing on my own.

But looking online, the Orijen looks like a good try (has more glucosamine than others).

I will let you know how it works. I'll donate the bags of Newman's Own food I have to the local shelter!

Major signs of allergies. Your critter does not tolerate grains well at all. It is a wonder it hasn't developed diarrhea. If your sister works for a vet and it is close enough, have her get Royal Canine for the critter. (If they sell it!) I would suggest the one protein one carb food. Venison potato or duck potato etc. My vet has Ru on Tavist daily. You can get it over the counter, but the dose then is 2 of the 1.34mil tablets morning and night for a 110 lb dog. Has made a big difference in him.

Courtney - take a look at the grain free kibbles (Wellness CORE, NOW, Orijen, etc.) as your dog could be allergic to some grains - corn & wheat are the ones that are most common and Chicken is the most common meat allergy ...

Okay, now this topic has me wondering!! I had been feeding Zach Beneful. When my sister heard that (she has worked at a vet for many years), she was not happy with that choice. I felt sooo bad that I was maybe feeding him crap food!

So I looked for organic foods and ended up choosing Newman's Own Organics Adult Dog Formula Dry. He's been on it for about 2 1/2 weeks now. And he is itching one of his ears like crazy! Organic Barley & Organic Oats are the 1st 2 ingredients in it. Could he be allergic to the formula!? CRAP!!

Also, what do you give your dogs to get rid of itchy ears?

Arrrrghhh! Any comments would be helpful!

At my vet the price for the 18# bag is $54.10 and for the canned I pay $63.60 for a case of 24. It does seem expensive, but if it works, nothing is too much for my baby! I hope yours makes out as well as Ru has on this food.

When the food recalls happened, I immediately changed April to Blue Buffalo. I buy it a PetSmart or PetCo, and for 6 lbs., it is 16.99. This sounds a little expensive, but April only weighs 5 lbs, so this lasts for a long time.

I was horrified when I realized what I had been feeding her on the Pedigree. I will say that she licks her paws some, but it isn't to the point that I think it's too much. I didn't know that this was a sign of allergies. And she does get an ear infection about once a year. I thought that was because her ears are long and they maybe weren't drying them enough at the groomers and it was setting up bacteria! Wow I learn so much here.

How much are you paying for the Royal Canin at the vet? Our is 60.05 for the 18# bag....wondering if your is the same.....I am hoping that this Canine Caviar Venison will work for him....it is grain free.....I was able to get 3-9# bags today(that equals a case) for 73$...then I called around and I found another store where I can get it from for 20$ for the 9# bag and may give a break on the 3...store owner out sick today....

My Ru has really bad allergies. He is on Royal Canine Venison & Potato dry with canned. We buy it at our vet's. He is doing great on it! The only other thing he can have is hamburger and potato & ice cream.
Tigger can eat anything, but prefers to have IAMs weight control and moist & meaty beef chunks. Hates canned dog food. Weird huh?!
Oh and they both love their french vanilla ice cream!

I switched Stella from Nutro to Blue Buffalo recently because of the worry about food recall.
The chicken and rice,, not such a great thing for her, made her VERY gassy, she has a sensitive tummy LOL I changed to the lamb and rice, not a problem.
She has a lot of allergy issues too. Allergies to corn and wheat caused her to chew her feet, get nasty rashes, ear infections, stuff like that.
I raised her on the Nutro (my other dog had severe allergies and did well on it) but was not at all happy with their new formula.

Flint River Ranch dog and cat food is amazing stuff.

http://www.frrco.com/indexFlash.cfm?7678

I started feeding it to my animals when I saw how incredibly healthy my cousin's animals were. My OLD kitty with mangy hair actually looks beautiful (well he's kinda funny looking, but he has a nice coat)...my neurotic retriever is not so itchy and has mellowed...my lab has a gorgeous coat. Check it out and see if it might work for your critter family. :)

Good Luck!

I second the Wellness diets. My dog was very itchy on his previous diets. I switched him to the Wellness fish and potato. He was still getting regular treats, but once I switched him to the Wellness Well bars (small treats)the itching became non-existant. He loves the "Yogurt, apples & bananas" Their well bars don't contain any meat by products, corn, soy, etc (the common food allergens).

I have dog with bad allergies that used to get horrible ear infections and itched himself to death. I feed him Wellness whitefish and sweet potato. He can not handle chicken or lamb anymore digesting. I have had him off corn and wheat for a very long time as well. The trick was finding a treat I could get him eliminating those meats as well. Wellness makes a vegetarian cookie that he likes okay. But at least he still gets awards every once in awhile.

first, I have to say, I love your signature quotes - especially the walking one!! I live by that one!!

o.k. - on dog food - I lean much more towards what some folks call the premium side as you get better quality ingredients (less formula changes) AND you feed less and because they can digest it better, less 'dooty' to pick up in the yard.

have you check out the Dog Food Project web site or the Dog Food analysis web sites? Both have rating systems and lots of good information on nutrition.

I feed a grainless kibble as I have one that's allergic to wheat and one that's allergic to chicken (and Jen, who's allergic to chicken is also very sensitive to laundry detergents and floor cleaners - egads!)

www.dogfoodproject.com

www.dogfoodanalysis.com - look for something that is at least 5 star rated

I'm also trying to decide on a new dog food. I've been using Canidae for 3+ years and Oscar (3.5 year old black lab) has always been really healthy with a shiny coat. This summer when Canidae changed their formula he started scratching a lot, licking his paws, and he also smells bad for the first time. I want to use a good quality food that he will thrive on as he used to with Canidae, but I don't have a lot of disposable income right now. I looked up some of the highly ranked dog foods, but they all look really expensive, much more than the $30 I was paying for a 40# bag of Canidae. My breeder recommends, in addition to Canidae, the following: Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover's Soul Adult Dog Formula, Eagle Pack Original Adult or Holistic Select Canine Formula, Innova Dog, or Precise Chicken Meal and Rice Formula or Foundation Formula. Does anyone have experience with any of these or other recommendations?

Cooper was also doing alot of paw licking, recurrent ear infections and hives from time to time---all gone now...vet says most allergies are beef, wheat, corn, soy and sometimes chicken.....just an FYI....

Cooper has food??? alleriges...has been eating Royal Canin Vension and potato(bought through vet $$$$$--18# for 60$)---done great on this so today I am getting him Canine Cavier, vension and split pea and see how he does with this.....hoping his allergies are just food and not enviroment. We did what was an elimination diet where all he could have was the food from the vet(no treats so for a treat we feed him more food as treats), food has just 1 protein and 1 carb source...symptoms went away so time to try something else...always done holistic for him, but they had chicken , beef in them....I am hoping this works.....anyways.....hope this helps...

Hello fellow Dog Lovers,

Since finding out that Nutro is changing their formula....I have been researching other dog foods for my Lexi. Lexi is 4 years old, has slight allergies(chews on her paws), a sensitive stomach(absolutly no people food/gets diarreha) and what I believe is some arthritis in her back legs(loves long walks). Should I stick with Nutro or change to something better? Please provide me with your thoughts/feelings/experiences.

Upcoming Races:
