Hi Beth! As far as good shoes go, I have used New Balance and now I'm using Asics. It's best to go to Runner's World online and see their recommendations. As far as tricks go, I'm afraid I don't have any :) But I CAN recommend you a program that I used when I trained for my first half-marathon (but you don't have to do this long of a race, you can just use the training for whatever). I use the run/walk method by Jeff Galloway (see link below). You can adjust it however way you want, even running for 2 minutes and then walking for 1 minute, etc. Many people use this method, from beginners to seasoned marathoners. It's the only way I've done long races. I highly recommend it!! Let me know if you have any questions. :)
