I have to head back over to the condo again this morning, 4 days in a row over there. All the material for next week's siding job is in the garage, and two weeks of dust, noise and disruption begin next week.

Monday is Fall, so I intend to enjoy this last week of summer before the days are shorter than th nights.

What a day, indeed! You can't make that stuff up, can you? Well, good riddance, and may the new guy do better for you!

I spent most of my day having lunch with my mom and taking her to the grocery store and to the bank. Tried to show her how to use her bank card and the ATM to get her balance, but we had just gotten a balance from the teller in the lobby, so she didn't see the point.

What a day. We were going through the stuff the old maintenance guy stored in our two shop spaces, and there was a locked closet with no key to it on the maintenance keyring. We busted the lock and it turned out to be a massage room. We have suspected for years that we weren't getting 40 hours of work a week for the 40 hours we were paying him, now we know why. And, of course, association funds were used to build all of his rooms and hideaways. And association funds will have to be used to get rid of it.

Don't forget tomorrow at Starbucks! It is supposed to be cool and maybe drizzly, a perfect day to be indoors drinking coffee with friends.

Beth, I remember 29, but that's more than half my lifetime ago. Self confidence is directly proportional to your age. The older you are, the more you have, and the more you wonder why you didn't understand confidence when you were younger and could have really used it. That's what old folks mean by "If only I knew then what I know now".

Oh, it's in Maryland, not Florida! Oh man, I wouldn't even go as far as Florida for a half marathon, let alone a 5k ;-) I forget what town in Maryland, I just know it's on the opposite side of DC. I've only been to Six Flags once.

I get to celebrate my first 29th birthday next month! Some of my friends who are my age are dreading the big 2-9 and the big 3-0, but I'm pretty excited. I feel like I'm finally an age where most people will take me seriously and not dismiss me because I'm in my 20's and look young. Also, I'm enjoying the self-confidence that comes with age. I wouldn't mind having a little more at times, but it's definitely better than when I was 22 or 25 :-)

Beth, thank you for the birthday wishes! It's the 29th anniversary of my 29th birthday. Life is good.

Alas, I won't be going to the 5K in Florida with you.

But I am looking forward to seeing you and other favorite Sparkers at the Starbucks soon!

Hi all! I'm still slowly making my transition back to almost-normal after Kenya (I never really come the whole way back to normal, and I don't want to), so it's taken me a while to get back to SP. Looks like everyone's been spread a little thin on here lately!

Happy Birthday, Peggy! Congrats on growing an inch ;-) I wouldn't mind another inch or two myself. One of my cello students is about a foot taller than me after this summer, I think!

I'm excited for the meetup next weekend! It's been a long summer without seeing my favorite Sparkers!

What motivated me to get back on here was an ad I saw on facebook this morning for a BIGGEST LOSER RUN/WALK AT 6 FLAGS AMERICA!!! I am a crazy Biggest Loser fangirl, so I am absolutely signing up for the 5k. It fits really well in with my half marathon training! It's on September 28th, and my training says I'm supposed to do a 5k race on October 5th, so I'm just flipping those two weeks around and doing the 5k on the 28th, and the 6 miles I'm supposed to do on the 28th will be on the 5th. Anyone want to do it with me? It's a little expensive for a 5k, but there is all kinds awesome swag (my favorite being a finisher's medal) AND you can geek out with me over the former Biggest Loser contestants who will be there if you want ;-) They're offering discounted park tickets to runners, which I don't plan on taking advantage of, but if that's your thing, that's an option, too! Anyone want in on this race with me? I'm going to go sign up in about 3.6 seconds because I'm so excited.

Hope to see you all next Saturday at the meetup!

Hi! How are you guys doing? Saving up stories for the get-together?

When I was at the dr' s last week, I checked my height: 5 foot 7. I had thought it was 5 foot 6, and that inch reduced my BMI to healthy range. Mom was right - stand up straight!

Two guys from the gas company itself (rather than the contractor doing the line work) came out today and lit the appliances. They tested the generator (it's OK). I got the hot water heater working myself with a plumber on the phone talking me through it. The thermostat is a little computer and you have to let it go through the whole boot cycle without interruption like any other computer. If you just start punching buttons (which is what the guy did yesterday) you'll just shut it down. I can't believe they sent out a guy who had never seen a modern hot water heater. He also had never seen a stove like mine, thought the concentric ring flame was a problem rather than the way it is designed. Turns out that guy used to work for the gas company but left to work for the contractor. The gas company guys didn't say much about Paul, but the glances between them told me volumes. I doubt his leaving Washington Gas was his choice, and the contractor will have to consider my complaints before they send him in to someone else's house. I'll have to pay to restore the lawn, but it's time for the fall lawn renovation anyway so that's fine.

So this is done, thank God. I have a contract to have some damaged siding replaced in a couple of weeks, then another company to paint the whole house. It's been 12 years. It's time. I have no problem with the expense and disruption of home maintenance and repair, it's part of the American Dream after all, but I didn't need new gas lines or the grief it caused.

Nell - strong temptation to go to a good hotel, take a nice shower, put a bunch of clothes through the laundry, and present them with the bill. It might be satisfying to run up a big bar tab, but that might be a bit much, what do you think?

Were you able to relight the gas fireplaces?

Miss Utility had no record of the gas line, but the FIOS line they had. It was excavated correctly, but someone slipped into the hole and broke the line. I had to wait 28 hours to get it back. Then today they turned off the gas for 6 hours, and came inside to relight appliances. He got to the hot water heater, but said he had never seen one with the little computerized regulator. He punched a bunch of buttons then told me to fix it myself and stomped out without relighting the gas fireplaces. The regulator light signals "low gas pressure" so guess whose fault that is? Looks like I have to pay to fix what they broke. They are replacing lines in their system on a rotating basis, I gather, and we were the lucky ones this month. It has been a nightmare, and with a long weekend coming up, I have no idea if I can get hot water before the weekend. Washington Gas disavows me. I am at my wits end.

Nell, why is the gas company digging? Are they doing something with the gas lines? Reconstructing the street? Totally s**ks that Miss Utility didn't locate the gas line correctly. And how did they manage to cut your FIOS line? Did Miss Utility miss that one, too? Or did the gas company ignore the marks? GRrrrrr

the gas company is still here and digging, I still have no gas service. They cut my FIOS line yesterday, and just got my phone internet and tv back. Miss Utility didn't have the correct location of the gas lines so it has taken them forever to do the job. I am tired of the noise and disruption (I'm sure the whole street is). I can cook in the electric skillet tonite, but what will I do about a shower with no hot water? I was chosen for this, I sure didn't select it, I get nothing out of it except mess and disruption. They could have at least paid a month's gas bill (about $10 in the summer), but I get nothing.

Hi Nell, thanks for the story about computers and Alzheimer's. My mom has it and will not touch a computer.

Suzi, Bow is a good judge of character, if he likes cats. Good job getting the walking in. Woo-hoo, getting the classroom ready for the kids! They'll have a blast in your class.

I'm beginning to come to a conclusion about what I want to do with the bike. You're right about the parts may be more expensive, if they are available at all. I could by a new bike for the estimated cost, but I can ride only one bike at a time. (My talents are many, and my powers are awesome, but they do not include riding two bikes roman-style.) And if I wanted to donate the bike, I would still want to fix it up before doing so.

The scale read 159 pounds this morning. If I stand up straight, that's the top of my healthy weight range, and the lightest I've been in about 25 years. I sat on my bed for half an hour before I could make myself EAT SOME BREAKFAST. The rest of the day progressed normally after that.

Hi All

Well I went to work today to clean toys, hope to go back next week to help some more. emoticon
I got up early this morning and walked Bow 1.2 miles then when I got back home I walked him 2 more miles. emoticon
Peggy -Bow likes cats but does not like to see them walk around outside when he is in the house. Hope you get to ride that bike soon. emoticon
Nell- Glad to see you check-in. My neighbor had dementia...I use to go visit her with the church directory--she would look at pictures and remember people.
Hope everyone has a good weekend! Blessings

I am grateful for the rain, less time spent watering the lawn and garden. I read about the drought in the west and southwest, and I'm grateful for rain!

Mom needs a new printer. I went out for an hour a futzing around with her computer and that's all it is. Then she paid a tech for two hours of teaching her something, she doesn't know what, so it was useless. Dementia and computers don't do well together. I got there as she was coming back from Harris Teeter on the little Ashby Ponds shuttle bus, bringing in her 5 liters of wine to last a week. That doesn't help dementia, either.

Suzi, thanks for the bike shop tip. I often think it would be great to own a dog for walkies, but then Tillie the cat convinces me it would be bad, very bad.

Well, I'm gonna take credit for the rain we've been having. I left my car window rolled down the night before last (nobody stole the car or the bike in the trunk), and I also left my bathing suit (the size 12 with tummy control) and towels on the deck to dry. The pool closes soon for two weeks of maintenance, so I've been getting my Swimmers' Miles in while I can.

I hope everybody is keeping cool and dry!

Hi All

Took Bow to obedience training today and I really got a good work-out. I also walked him this morning and will take him out again this evening.

Peggy- a 45 year old Schwinn??? We have 2 bike shops here in Manassas but parts for a bike that old might cost more. A Schwinn will last for ever but it will always need new tires and chain adjustments. The one that we use is Bull Run Bikes. Hope this helps.

Hi Suzi! I've been driving around with my old bicycle in my trunk. Do you know of a place that would love to fix up a 45-year-old Schwinn that hasn't been ridden in decades? (I blush).

It's fun to hear all the teachers talk about the new school year - for some, it's beginning today. And what about the big kids packing for another year on campus?

Peggy-I tried that and got a blister on the bottom of my foot....I'm not ever going to be a runner. I like the idea of having cheese and a little ....

I'm almost ready to go back to school....I've been told that I would be working on Thur. and Fri. This means I will be working with 3 and 4 yr. olds. I'm not sure what I will do every Sat, Sun, Mon, Tue, and Wed. This is a big change!

Carla - Good to hear from you again. Leesburg is a good approximation, I'm in Sterling, home of AOL. How's your garden doing?

Celia - LOL doing the minimum on Spark! I'm beginning to wish I could. Between all the points and the tracking nutrition to the nth degree - I get sucked in.

Well, I was at the seashore, eating salads every night and managed to gain my usual 3 pounds. Maybe it was the shrimp salad on the romaine salad ... and the swordfish steak on the mixed greens salad.

Hi Celia! I sure have missed you. I just started checking in again this week, hadn't for almost a month :-( Looking forward to catching up. Maybe we can go for a walk sometime soon :-)

It has been a long time since I checked in, and a LOT has been happening with you all. Fun to catch up. Still pretty much taking a break from SP, just logging in and doing the minimum.

Hi Tasha. It's in PWC, at Potomac Towne Center-where Wegman's is. It's not too far from Centreville. Peggy comes from...? Leesburg, I think. Sorry Peggy, I know you're in that area somewhere but am not 100% it's Leesburg. I post a thread on the monthly meet up thread (usually!) about a week in advance and also do an invite on our FB page. Welcome again!

Welcome Tasha. This is a great bunch, and we're here for each other in a way that is hard for others to understand. Checking in here is a great way to keep yourself on track and recover when you ... wander a bit.

Of course Peggy! It isn't fun without you! Eating your greens while away = emoticon

emoticon TASHASC! I haven't been the best about checking in here everyday, but I've made it two days in a row now :-) Where do you live? We have a monthly get together the second Saturday of each month (usually!). Glad to have you join us!

Hello Everyone! New to SP and since my biggest challenge to my weight loss is accountability, I plan to make a conscious effort to check in daily. This is exactly what I need!

Well, I had forgotten all about the get-together until my celly beeped the reminder from my calendar. I'm sure the reason everybody else forgot was that they read my post about my plans changing so I would have to skip August. "Well, if Peggy's not going to be there, it's not going to be any fun ..."

Any way, you know you're a Sparkperson when you go to the seashore and eat leafy greens!

Hello everyone! My how time slips away from me! I hope everyone is doing well. I see from FB that Beth is back! Welcome home!! Loved seeing all your pics.

Not much new around here. Meghan and Joey left yesterday for the Outer Banks for 9 days. The house is nice and peaceful with just Dave and I. I have had tendonitis in my elbow for well over a month now and that's keeping me from enjoying a lot of things since it's my left arm and I'm left handed.

My garden is coming to an end soon. Still getting tomatoes and cucumbers and spaghetti squash but the rest is about done. In about a month I'll pull everything up and plant some fall items.

I will try to make it in here more often. I miss you all!

Beth-Welcome Home!
Nell-I just mailed a note and forgot to put the photos in the envelope.
Peggy-Bow only chewed up one thing this week...a quilt! I just washed it and folded it and put it on top of the chest freezer in the hall. I need to baby proof....but I like my mess :-]

I need to change-and with that said....lets do this!

Ooh I had a meeting at the church this morning and forgot all about the meetup! How many of you were there?

Suzi, glad to hear that Bow is not chewing up stuff. He's a fast learner!

Actually, the County pool where I swim requires showers before swimming, and I comply because I start out with the water nice and hot, and go colder and colder so that getting into the pool is not such a shock.

I hope the other NoVa's are doing well and enjoy the get-together on Saturday.

Hi

6:30 am and I'm taking Bow for a 2 mile walk. Now it's time for me to go to the gym! Today I'm heading to Water Aerobics, the cold water will feel good.

It's nice to come home and nothing is chewed, or messed up.
Peggy...rock-in size 12....did you know that you need to wet your suit or shower before getting in the pool. A dry swimsuit will absorb the chlorine from the pool, but a wet suit can not absorb anything. Think of a dry sponge in your right hand and a wet sponge in your left hand....now lower them into the pool. :-]

I need to change-and with that said....lets do this!

Suzi - rocked the size 12! No, it's not that the size 14 has lost its elastic!

Nell- Wow Great Job on holding on your weight!
Peggy- size 12 swim suit .....wooo emoticon

Well we took Young EB back to VT. Now it's time to get adjusted to this empty nest.

They say you don't get the dog you dream about but the dog you need. I start obedience training with Bow tomorrow. It's a little sad that I got a dog that does not like being alone...just like me! I need to be the pack leader....I did find that Bow knows how to run along next to my bike emoticon emoticon
