Hi All

Took Bow to obedience training today and I really got a good work-out. I also walked him this morning and will take him out again this evening.

Peggy- a 45 year old Schwinn??? We have 2 bike shops here in Manassas but parts for a bike that old might cost more. A Schwinn will last for ever but it will always need new tires and chain adjustments. The one that we use is Bull Run Bikes. Hope this helps.

I need to change-and with that said....lets do this!

Hi Suzi! I've been driving around with my old bicycle in my trunk. Do you know of a place that would love to fix up a 45-year-old Schwinn that hasn't been ridden in decades? (I blush).

It's fun to hear all the teachers talk about the new school year - for some, it's beginning today. And what about the big kids packing for another year on campus?

Hi All
Peggy-I tried that and got a blister on the bottom of my foot....I'm not ever going to be a runner. I like the idea of having cheese and a little ....

I'm almost ready to go back to school....I've been told that I would be working on Thur. and Fri. This means I will be working with 3 and 4 yr. olds. I'm not sure what I will do every Sat, Sun, Mon, Tue, and Wed. This is a big change!

I need to change-and with that said....lets do this!

Ugh! I thought I would take my 4-mile walk up a notch and run as many little bits as I could. Turns out my overall pace was actually slower. And my toes are sore and my knee hurts. And I'd like some cheese with this whine.

Carla - Good to hear from you again. Leesburg is a good approximation, I'm in Sterling, home of AOL. How's your garden doing?

Celia - LOL doing the minimum on Spark! I'm beginning to wish I could. Between all the points and the tracking nutrition to the nth degree - I get sucked in.

Well, I was at the seashore, eating salads every night and managed to gain my usual 3 pounds. Maybe it was the shrimp salad on the romaine salad ... and the swordfish steak on the mixed greens salad.

Hi Tasha. It's in PWC, at Potomac Towne Center-where Wegman's is. It's not too far from Centreville. Peggy comes from...? Leesburg, I think. Sorry Peggy, I know you're in that area somewhere but am not 100% it's Leesburg. I post a thread on the monthly meet up thread (usually!) about a week in advance and also do an invite on our FB page. Welcome again!

Well, I had forgotten all about the get-together until my celly beeped the reminder from my calendar. I'm sure the reason everybody else forgot was that they read my post about my plans changing so I would have to skip August. "Well, if Peggy's not going to be there, it's not going to be any fun ..."

Any way, you know you're a Sparkperson when you go to the seashore and eat leafy greens!

Hello everyone! My how time slips away from me! I hope everyone is doing well. I see from FB that Beth is back! Welcome home!! Loved seeing all your pics.

Not much new around here. Meghan and Joey left yesterday for the Outer Banks for 9 days. The house is nice and peaceful with just Dave and I. I have had tendonitis in my elbow for well over a month now and that's keeping me from enjoying a lot of things since it's my left arm and I'm left handed.

My garden is coming to an end soon. Still getting tomatoes and cucumbers and spaghetti squash but the rest is about done. In about a month I'll pull everything up and plant some fall items.

I will try to make it in here more often. I miss you all!

Suzi, glad to hear that Bow is not chewing up stuff. He's a fast learner!

Actually, the County pool where I swim requires showers before swimming, and I comply because I start out with the water nice and hot, and go colder and colder so that getting into the pool is not such a shock.

I hope the other NoVa's are doing well and enjoy the get-together on Saturday.

Hi

6:30 am and I'm taking Bow for a 2 mile walk. Now it's time for me to go to the gym! Today I'm heading to Water Aerobics, the cold water will feel good.

It's nice to come home and nothing is chewed, or messed up.
Peggy...rock-in size 12....did you know that you need to wet your suit or shower before getting in the pool. A dry swimsuit will absorb the chlorine from the pool, but a wet suit can not absorb anything. Think of a dry sponge in your right hand and a wet sponge in your left hand....now lower them into the pool. :-]

I need to change-and with that said....lets do this!

Peggy- size 12 swim suit .....wooo emoticon

Well we took Young EB back to VT. Now it's time to get adjusted to this empty nest.

They say you don't get the dog you dream about but the dog you need. I start obedience training with Bow tomorrow. It's a little sad that I got a dog that does not like being alone...just like me! I need to be the pack leader....I did find that Bow knows how to run along next to my bike emoticon emoticon

Nell, good job holding the line on the weight on vacation. I'm guessing you stood with your usual good posture at the wedding. Welcome back to the house with the fridge empty, the carpet the color of your cats, and a purse full of receipts!

I took a break from swimming (beginning to think the size 14 suit is getting a little slack) and walked up to Melodee Music to pick up a song book for lessons. Thought I would stop at Sweet Frog to make up the calories, but they weren't open, so I moved on to Starbucks and had a tall ice water. You know you're a SparkPerson when you can walk into a Starbucks and order water.

I only gained one pound this trip! It will fall off quickly now that I can get back to a normal meal routine.

What weather we are having here, you're right! It was cold on the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, but HOT in Kansas City and in Arkansas. I love being home and back to my cats. Who seem totally unconcerned. It will take a few days to get everything put back, rugs vacuumed of the accumulated cat hair. I'm supposed to go to a church class tonight but I don't think I can bear to leave the house for awhile. It's 3pm and DH is still in his pajamas. I've already been to Wegman and Costco, and gotten caught up on Quicken.

Just got home. We decided to go the full 800 miles today just to get home. I've been very careful about eating on this trip, and I'm starving right now, but it's too late to eat anything. I stopped at Giant for milk and fruit for breakfast. Tomorrow morning, the moment of truth when I step on the scale after traveling for 10 days.

Suzi - I've heard on the radio about TONS of dog toys. Some for him to herd and others for him to destroy (and have replaced ad infinitum). Also, have heard that dogs shouldn't be left in their crates for more than four hours (need verification!) I would also have a quiet but firm conversation with him that the cukes belong to the alphas, and he needs to leave them alone. He sounds like a good dog, with a little bit of puppy still in him, a lot of energy and intelligence.

Volunteered at church: getting envelopes all stickered-up for a mass mailing ( for some reason, we don't print addresses on the envelopes) and entering data about the disposition of the keyes to the church. Then a voice lesson. Teacher can't figure out how I get that nice rich tone with my mouth kept closed.

Hello from Kansas City! We went to an amazing rehearsal dinner last night, and tonight is the wedding. I have been so careful with my eating this last week on the road, so I hope my skirt fits well tonight and I don't have to spend 4 hours holding my stomach in. We have spent most of the last week bundled up in weather that was low of 40, high of 65, but this weekend KC is 95 degrees. It's nice to be back in shorts in July.

Off to Hot Springs, Arkansas tomorrow.

Hello, Nell, wherever you are!

Hi, Suzi, glad you are back to walking.

Carla and Beth, I enjoyed your pictures on Facebook.

Hello, Forzachandmatt!

I am putting in minutes and miles at the county pool. I made my knee sore last week when I walked four miles in 59 minutes. I walked the last mile on the shoulder of the road, rather than the sidewalk because I started too late, and it was dark.

I hope the rest of the NOVA crew is doing well - tell us about it, why doncha?

Hi All

Well I could not exercise due to a Blister on the bottom of my foot...until today! I finally took Bow for a mile walk- then got on my bike for 3 miles. Went to the movies yesterday...the new Planet of the Apes is really good. I was so into the movie that I almost ate a whole container of Popcorn! The scale was so mean :[
Peggy- I'm sure your enjoying singing emoticon

Had my first voice lesson on Friday, and it wasn't as bad as I feared. Started off with stretching, then posture, then breathing, then a little bit of sing this scale on "la". Then lot's of 'relax your face' and 'open your mouth.' Finally, let's work on a song. Next lesson: July 28.

Will you threaten physical violence upon me if I say that the weather has been tranquil here? On the hot and humid side, and a little breezy. We got to the boardwalk this evening, where the off shore breeze cooled things down to perfection. There was a Severe Thunderstorm warning for counties south of us.

As you can see from my status, I got in both a walk - 2 miles to the boardwalk and back - and 45 minutes of genersl swimming in the pool. The pool is so small, I practiced flip turns across the pool: push off one side, two strokes, flip, two strokes, flip again ...

Keep cool and dry!

We got heavy rain and lightning, but it didn't last very long, and last week's storm missed us completely. There must be pixies in the ground around here; storms roll up to Western Fairfax, then split and go around, only to reconvene just east of here. I remember 2003 when Dulles Airport got 60" of rain, 20" more than the 40" normal. It was so GREEN that year! That was the year my youngest son hiked the Appalachian Trail, and all his gear mildewed. Even his hair mildewed. He was wet for weeks at a time, yet remembers it fondly. Ah, youth!

Peggy, the beach sounds awesome! We had really bad storms again today. No power at work or at lights on the way home and a HUGE tree down across 29. I sat for 40 minutes until I got to where it was and the crews were there already and had cleared enough of it that the left lane could squeeze by. I hear the bad storms expected again tomorrow but then low humidity and gorgeous for the rest of the week.

At the beach, visiting Mom. Packed my bathing suit and walking shoes, so NO excuses. Strolled to look at the ospreys after dinner. The babies are looking out of the nests (yes, there are two nests.)

Looks like there are storms all over the area but none here yet. I slept really late today, I think I needed it but I feel like a day off is lost, LOL. I picked some lemon cucumbers out of my garden and my first 3 really ripe tomatoes. Those will go well with the zucchini and green beans I picked yesterday.

I'm able to make it tomorrow but not sure if you want to come if it's just you and I Peggy. I can only stay about an hour and a half, have a cook out after. I never posted a notice on the fb page, but in the past years summer meet ups have been pretty small with so many people going away and having other plans. I can at least post a post on the page and not a whole invite and that way anyone that wants to go can let us know. I'll go do that now and see if we get any responses.

Hi, Carla, welcome back! Glad to hear it was 'just life' keeping you busy.

Suzi, the pictures from Babb' s are gorgeous!

I went swimming at the county's indoor pool this morning. No speed records, just making sure I still knew how to do it. I asked the clerk at the front desk to check, and she found that I hadn't been there since March.

I will try to get to the get-together tomorrow. I have a home caregivers workshop in Ashburn that lasts until 1 PM.

Hi everyone! My apologies for not stopping in here for quite some time. Sometimes life just gets in the way! I've been well, enjoyed a week off of work and just relaxed. It was so nice. Not much else new on my end. My garden is coming along quite nicely. I've got 100's of cucumbers and tomatoes and quite a few peppers and squash and green beans. Already thinking about how I need to double to space next year. I only have 9 tomato plants, 5 beans, a few squash, a few herbs and 4 or 5 pepper plants. Not nearly enough compared to what I'm used to, but at least it's something!

I hope you all are well. Wow, we sure have gotten a lot of rain the past 3 days. We had bad storms 3 afternoon/evenings in a row. Hopefully it will settle down soon.

I hope the team weathered the storms yesterday well. The power stay on, the basement stayed dry, and the trees stayed up.

I dropped my cat Tillie off at the vet's today for her annual teeth cleaning. I brought the cat carrier up from the basement, and she slid upstairs and to the far corner under the bed. Ooh! Thanks to Spark people, it was much easier for me to shimmy after and get her out.

Well, more storms are forecast for today. I hope we get more rain and less wind.

Hi All

Just enjoying taking walks with our dog and going for bike rides in town.

Peggy- Bow is a very good dog-he knows sit ,stay, down, and he has not tried to get up on the sofa. He does not run out the door when it is opened! He does his stuff out side and only barks once when someone comes to the door. He does not beg for food when we sit down to eat. Someone spent a lot of time training him...I can't find anything wrong with him??? Almost to good to be true. emoticon

I need to change-and with that said....lets do this!

Suzi, that is too funny about the dog herding the kids! But he looks like a great dog.

I walked about 5 miles today: to the bank, to the post office, to Delmarva Taphouse for a salad, and home. The weather was just too lovely to be jumping in and out of the car.

We went to the dog pound and found Bow! He is a 5 year old that some one gave up because he liked emoticon to herd their children! I'm so very happy with him as he is house trained, quiet, ....what were they thinking ...I know--that lady Suzib needs a dog!

Happy Independence Day!

My heart went out the PWC chapter of the team when I was driving to visit my Mom, and listening to the reports of the traffic on I-95.

Yeah, Nell, what about that Dow closing above 17,000!. By cracky, I remember when the Dow fell from 2,200 to 1,700 in October 1987. I was listening to the radio the next morning when the announcer cheerfully read the headline "and the Dow dropped 500 points yesterday". I was drinking orange juice, and a fair amount of it went out all over the breakfast table. Then we waited 20 years for the Dow to drop 5,000 points? You can tell I'm just a little bit of a bear on the market, no? Well, I am glad that the hop over 17,000 seems to be in response to a jobs report that was pretty good.

I crossed under the beltway going to the toll road, and it was jammed in both directions. I am SO glad to be indoors away from the traffic and the rain.

The Dow closed over 17,000 today! When I first put money into a stock mutual fund, the Fidelity Magellan, back in 1982, it was the first time they started the IRA for people who worked at a place that had a retirement plan. 1981 was a year into the bear market of the early 80s, about 800 or so. Who could have imagined!

The temperature got up to 99 on my tree-shaded deck before the squall line went through and knocked the temps down into the eighties. Waiting for Arthur and the cold front to bring us relief.

I hope NoVa's are not stuck in the traffic of people leaving town for the holiday.

Hi There

Hope everyone is hiding from all this heat....I just opened our electric bill $124! A lot less than last years.

Nell- your right about puppies being adorable, I really want to rescue a dog that needs to take long walks and fits with both EB and Me! Your cats are beautiful. emoticon

Peggy-We have a great yard for a dog and our Vet said he just fixed a dog but it might take 3 months to find out what kind of personality he will have. I have not seen him but I was told he was BIG! We will just keep looking until we both agree as it is my want-but EB gets to pay for her. emoticon
I did Tia Chi this morning and then went for a bike ride...Life is Good! then I did 30 minutes of Weight Watchers cardio boxing! emoticon and took a mile walk after going to I Hop!

Nell, did you buy new knives, or have your knives sharpened?

Suzi, how is your quest for a dog coming along?

I volunteered at the church yesterday, as a lay communion server at a funeral. The widow's friends brought a ton of food for the reception, which was good because there lots of people at the service.

I hope it rains!

Suzi, it's a lot easier to select a tiny pet than an older one. The babies are all just so cute! When it's time for a new cat, I always get them at about 8 weeks old, just weaned. The older cats will accept a kitten within a month or so. An older cat, maybe never, and I avoid cat angst and the peeing around the house by sticking to kittens.

I went to the West End farmer's market this morning in Alexandria, and I now have SHARP KNIVES again!! I just cut up some lamb, onions, garlic and cilantro, and it was amazing how easy it was!

What a beautiful weekend we have had! The house has been open but the heat comes again this week, so the a/c will have to come back on.

Hi Everyone

Went to church this morning then headed to Pet Value to look at all the dogs up for adoption.
Did not agree with EB on anyone dog so we will just keep looking. Then I finished this cake for young EB. Glad that he wanted to take this to work with him tomorrow! Dark chocolate cake basted in Carmel sauce then covered in almond butter cream frosting. Dark chocolate letters and a few chopped walnuts and Ummmmm

Hi!

The gardening at the church started off as scheduled and ended only a little early when lightning was sighted. I guess the Father was tired of us creeping about the Garden, pulling up and clipping out plants we considered out of place. No snakes seen.

Back at home, the leaves are disappearing off the Sweet Violets in my backyard. Rabbits? Deer? I suspect the deer, because the leaves are also disappearing off the poison ivy -- that grows in the common area behind my house. I have a few small PI plants in my yard that I need to paint with herbicide - of course, those PI leaves will be left by the deer.

Nell, like your DH, I'm not spending a whole lot of time in the garden. The bugs are awful. I've heard it said that out-of-towners think Virginians are friendly - until they realize we're waving to shoo away the gnats.

Suzi - good luck on the dog and congratulations on your kid's milestones!

Hi There

Just a quick check-in...the gym was good but now that school is out the gym has a lot more children playing, and it is very noisy!
Peggy -Thank you!
My son will turn 21 on Monday and has requested a cake to take to work, so I will be baking this weekend. When its this hot I like to stick to Ice Cream Cakes.
I use chopped nuts for the crust and layer low sugar ice cream and lite cool whip then more low sugar ice cream. Then just sprinkle on some M&M's and freeze.
Hope to get our new dog today from Adopt A Pet {rescue]
Oh young EB made a down payment on his first apartment at V.T.! Yaaa
Hope you all are staying in from the heat....it's hot!

Peggy, my DH was out in the garden this morning but gave up. Between the oppressive humidity and the bugs it just wasn't fun. And since his strokes he can't get too hot anymore.

Hello all! It's Wednesday again and hot and humid after all the recent lovely weather. The reason I'm kvetching is that this is another day for gardening at the church, and last week's work evening was cancelled because of the weather. I hope this week will be good.

Suzi, thank you for your kind note. We all have our wisdom: yours with children and your faith ... and cakes. It's getting a little warm for baking, but have you made a cake lately, in between bird houses?

Have a good week!

Bob- Your right I did a lot of mowing....And now I have a huge wood pile that needs to be stacked! Glad it was free.

Today at the gym I did 29 minutes rowing and then rode a uprite bike for 31 minutes.
I get to go look at a dog,,,I might adopt Thursday! emoticon

Bob, the gardening at church was cancelled, so puttered around my own yard: watering plants, water myself, put sugar water in the hummingbird feeders, have a drink myself... How's the kitchen punch list work coming?

Yesterday, I helped break down the Vacation Bible School decorations. The director remarked that they spent 12 hours putting them up, but 2 hours taking them down.

Beth, a thousand best wishes for a safe trip and shared joy teaching! Bring back pictures and memories! and a recipe for tea steeped in milk!

Suzi, there are people even smarter than me who cancelled the gardening at the church. So, I'll potter around the yard here today. Maybe I'll wash my car so it will rain.

I heard on the radio that some areas got stormed on pretty good last night - any stories from the NoVa gang?
