The local mall is Dulles Town Center. My neighbor and I got there at about 9:30 before everything opened, and we saw quite a few people walking purposefully that didn't look like employees checking in. Mom is visiting me here, so I've been palling around with her.

Peggy, which mall do you walk? There are so many to choose from around here.

This just in - Mom is visiting this Saturday, so I will have to miss you guys. Maybe it's for the best because a person can drop some serious money in those stores.

My neighbor who wants to walk just called and we'll be meeting Monday morning to walk around the local mall. Also, let's see if Mom coming with us can make it a threesome.

Beth, be strong! Stay with us here in Onederland!

Beth-I'm sorry to hear that. I've used old frames many times because there have been ones I've really liked. Here's to hoping you'll fall in love with your new frames! Oh...definitely try for the prescription sun glasses! I got my first pair a couple months ago and LOVE them. I have trifocals and got the same with the sunglasses. It's SO nice to be out and able to read anything be it close or far. Yay for getting your steps up!

Peggy-hope you can make the meet up but sure understand if you can't if your Mom is visiting.

Nell-I totally understand! This time of year, especially around shopping centers is crazy. I'm used to crazy though emoticon

Yeah, it wasn't that they couldn't, it was just that they wouldn't put the new lenses in the old frames :-( They wanted to sell me new ones and make more money. I'll survive, especially since my insurance covers most of the cost of the frames anyway.

Doing well staying in my calorie range yesterday and today so far. I am determined not to get above 200 again! School just finished, so I'm off to the gym in a few minutes, too. I have the lowest average daily # of steps for my team for the fitness challenge at work, and I'm trying to change that. I guess the challenge is accomplishing its goal if it's getting me to get in more steps :-)

Beth, I don't believe they couldn't grind a new lens for your old frames. I have been using the same frames for years. I have two identical frames and use the older one for new lenses and keep the current ones as backup, rotating as the years go by. I once bought an antique pince-nez at a flea market and had prescription lenses made for it. I'm sure they'd rather sell me frames, but didn't push it when I just told them to use the old ones. I know they can't use frames from Walmart (or similar) readers because they aren't intended for new lenses. Other than that, I don't understand what your optician was doing.

Hi, guys! I'm not sure what my plans are for the 13th. I have the get-together pencilled in, but if I have my mom at my house, I want neither to leave her at my house nor to subject her to the flat seats at Starbucks. Also, she has a hard time following conversations, especially people she doesn't know. Too bad - I keep talking to her about Sparkpeople and how interesting they are.

I will keep an eye on the message board to see if the get-together is a happenin' thing, and if I can come on over.

Beth, after seven years and precipitous drop in blood pressure (due to weight loss and down to normal levels), I had my eyes examined and new glasses made. Those old frames were toast, so I got two new styles. The office was having a buy one glasses, get a second at half price. I'm surprised you couldn't use your old frames, they being only 1 year old. Maybe it was because the office changed. Anyway, when you get old and decrepid like me, make sure you tell the doc you read music a lot, so he will give you bifocals that will have the correct focal length in the reading lenses. Woo-hoo! no more taking off my glasses to sing hymns!

I'm available the afternoon of the 13th for a meetup if others are! I know it's a busy month, but I've somehow managed to say no to enough stuff that my calendar isn't absurd yet :-)

I'm doing well at upping my number of steps a little every day. I walked to my optometrist appointment yesterday instead of driving to make up for missing Zumba, and ended up with about 7,000 steps. Not the 10,000 that I should be getting, but more than the 3,000 I have been getting most school days.

I was bummed to need new glasses--I knew that last year when I got my first pair of glasses, they'd gotten the wrong prescription for my right eye, but I'd hoped it was minor enough that I wouldn't need new glasses, or that maybe the new place (since my insurance changed) would just replace the lenses in my current frames, because I LOVE these frames. I'm really more upset about losing them than I should be. I found a pair that I liked almost as much, but the sides were too thick & blocked my peripheral vision, so I had to go with my second choice, which are similar to what I currently have, but not similar enough for me to love them. If I have enough money in the bank account when I go to pick them up, I may order a pair of prescription sunglasses that I loved to make me feel better, since they're having a 50% special.

I'm still trying to find places to squeeze more fitness into my schedule. Anyone have any ideas for what I could be doing while sitting in front of my therapy lamp every morning? I feel like it's a waste of 45 minutes and I'd like to multitask with fitness if I can.

Happy hump day!

December is a tough month to fit in anything not directly related to Christmas. Getting near Potomac Mills on a Saturday in December sounds like a tough ride. I think I'll wait until January.

Hi guys!

Yes, it's December! Peggy, it's 33 here but still just drizzle. I'll take that over ice any day and hope it stays that way!

Nell-I am sorry to hear you have more going on condo wise. Yuck. I know you don't want to deal with that and your sons insurance during the holiday!

Beth-I have a spark activity tracker and a fitbit. I wore the two together for months and the SPAT didn't pick up nearly the steps the fitbit did. I tried clipped in my bra, on my pants pocket and on my shoe which it said was most accurate. It never gave me nearly the steps I took that the fitbit seemed to correctly calculate. I gave up on it and it sits on a shelf now...

I hope you all have been well. I've just been so super busy. New Grandbaby now 2 weeks old, chaos at work still. Hoping things settle down some for the holiday.

Are any of you available for a December meet up? I know this season is super busy for most people but thought I'd throw it out there :-)

Happy Thanksgiving! I ran my Turkey Trot this morning. I was so excited, when I first started doing this Turkey Trot, I signed up by myself. The next year, my sister came to cheer me on. The next year, she brought her then-fiance to cheer me on. The next year, my now-brother-in-law ran it with me. This year, he ran it with me again, along with our nephew, while both my brother & sister cheered us on. I was so proud of how what I started has turned into a family affair :-)

I hope you're all having a great holiday!

Thank you so much, Nell, for all that key information. We are going to address my husband's insurance situation today before any more time goes by. I had no idea we only had a month this time and that we are in that month now. Yikes!

Sage, the plans offered change. My son's plan for last year isn't available next year so he had to pick a new one. The participating insurance companies designed and priced their plans based on government projections of enrollment, and enrollments were far less than anticipated, so prices drastically increased for all plans. And if someone is getting a subsidy, like my son, those subsidies have to be renewed, they don't carry over. And this year you only have from November 15 to December 15 to renew or be cancelled and subject to penalty for being uninsured.

Nell, do you know if you have to sign up again for a plan if you already have a plan from last year? Do those contracts expire?

I sent all the condo info and pictures off to the lawyer yesterday. I should hear from the insurance adjuster in a few days to see if they will pay for the defense.

Yesterday my son had to deal with healthcare.gov again. (Has it been a year already?) The site last year wouldn't accept him because he had no record with Experian. Only people with credit cards are real Americans, evidently. After a month on the phone he got past that, they gave him a password, but it never worked. They gave him two new passwords, neither of which worked, so he had to do it by phone. This year he tried again, hit the "Forgot Password" button and they sent him an email with a "message". But you have to have your password to log onto your account before you can find out what your password is. Those people are hopeless! His old plan is no longer available, and all the other similar plans are nearly 70% more expensive. Seems that last years prices were based on the government's estimates of how many people would participate, and those numbers were way too optimistic. The new prices reflect actual numbers of participants. They are required by law to insure for infertility, bariatric surgery and sex reassignment surgery, which jack up the prices. I wish he could get a job with health benefits. It probably wouldn't be much cheaper, but at least he wouldn't have to switch plans every year.

Nell, have you ever thought of writing a novel about your condo issues you've had to deal with? I find that whispering to myself "it's all material," is moderately useful.

Well, Beth, they say an alto is a soprano who has learned to read music. I shoyld ask my teacher if we can work on my low notes next. She'll probably look at me and say I should work on my consonants.

Wow, Nell, sorry you guys have to deal with that craziness! Ugh!

That's an impressive range, Peggy! I'm an alto, and anything above a D on the staff is a stretch for me at this point. When I was in voice class in college, I could get up to a G above the staff, but I don't sing regularly enough to get up there anymore. I'm more comfortable on the bottom of the staff! :-)

I'm not sure how accurate my new SPAT is. Last year, my Fitbit would track me at around 13,000-15,000 steps most Tuesdays, when I would take Spinning & Zumba. My school schedule this year doesn't allow me to get to the gym in time for Spinning, so I'm only doing Zumba, but my SPAT gave me only 5,000 steps yesterday! I know I'm doing less, but I find it hard to believe that Spinning alone would have registered as almost 10,000 steps. My SPAT also only registered 30 of the 60 minutes of Zumba as fitness minutes. I'll give it the 5 minutes of stretching at the end of class as non-fitness minutes since we aren't moving around a lot, but the other 55 minutes were almost non-stop movement, and my SPAT was right on top of my shoe! I'll have to look into the help page about it to see if I'm wearing it wrong or something.

Beth, so how many steps do you get in a Zumba class?

Jennie, nice to hear from you on the message board.

I sang a B above the treble clef in voice lesson today. If I can get up to the C, I will have a two-octave range, which is no slouch for a woman.

Remember the condo maintenance man we fired, then found out he had stored all his son's household goods in the shop and built a locked closet for a massage bed? We threw all of it out; we couldn't risk letting his son, a convicted violent felon, into the room. It wouldn't be safe for staff or board members, so we took most of it out. We left his sofa on the curb (it was too ratty to give away) where he could have picked it up, but even he didn't want it. His DIL is suing us for $9000. They want $3000 for the "message" bed, $800 for the sofa, $1000 for two mattresses, $900 for a treadmill that he took from a renter who had left it behind, $300 for two broken TV stands, and the rest for clothes and toys. She isn't even listed on the resident information form as a resident, so she has no legal standing. This is a joke, but it will be a time consuming joke during the holiday season.

Ugh, I am NOT ok with this cold. I'm already over winter. Spring, please!

I can't imagine being a landlord myself! My roommate's mom is our landlord & she's getting ready to sell our condo, and that's what our realtor told us about buying season, too.

I got lucky & my Spark Activity Tracker came in in time for my fitness challenge at work! It was waiting in my mailbox when I got home on Sunday :-) I like it so far, except that it has to sync with the little USB dongle & not with my phone. I liked that about my fitbit, but for half the price, I can't complain too much. I'm excited to see how many steps I have after Zumba tonight!

Cold enough out there? I had to head over to Lotte and Costco this morning. This will be a scarf and glove day. It's been awhile. I feel like there is a lot to do by Thanksgiving, but my youngest son and his family will be closing on a new house on Dec 8. They won't be able to put their current townhouse-condo on the market until Martin Luther King day. Their agent says the buying season doesn't really get underway until then. They say they want to rent it out, but I don't know anyone less qualified to be a real estate investor than my son and his wife. They need to learn how to care for their own house before they take on the time and financial investment of being landlords. I own a rental condo and I am on the board of the condo association. I have horror stories!

I did it! I was hoping for a PR, but turns out my phone isn't as accurate as I thought, which means the 11 miles I did in 2:28 last week wasn't quite 11 miles...but I missed a PR by only 5 minutes, which is pretty great, considering that I'm 20 pounds heavier than when I set my PR. I'll take it!
I had a moment of panic around mile 4 when we had an out-and-back on about a 1/2 mile of a neighborhood street, so I could see who was still behind me on my way back out to the main street, and it looked like it was starting to thin out behind me. It reminded me of when the crowd started to thin out when I attempted the full marathon back in 2012, and the whole race had been downhill (in a figurative sense, unfortunately) after that. But then I reminded myself that this wasn't the same race, I'm not the same person, I was actually making pretty decent time, and there was no good reason outside of a freak accident that I shouldn't finish this race. So I kept going and killed it for all 13.1 miles.

I hope everyone else is having a great weekend!

Nell, dish detergent! I use Fels-Naptha soap - but then I've never had a bad case of PI. I'll try Palmolive next time I get too close.

Go, Beth, go! Finish strong!

Hi, Jennie, good to see you on the check-in.

Spent most of the day with Mom. She has a handicap tag for the car due to her age, and we used it to reduce our walks in the cold as we went to the library, post office and restaurant.

I'm excited to get mine, Jennie! Though I haven't received a shipping notification yet, so I'm accepting the fact that it won't be here in time for the beginning of my fitness challenge, and DEFINITELY not for my race. I'll have to see if I can find an old cheap pedometer to use for the challenge until my SPAT comes in, I guess!

Thursday is usually my busy day, but my students just got picked up to go to an assembly, so I've got a moment to breathe. I'm going to grade papers in a minute until the assembly's over, but decided to take a minute on here first. It's nice :-)

Have I mentioned how excited I am for my race on Saturday? Because I am SUPER excited. Ready to run!

Hi everyone - hope you are all doing well. Can't believe how quickly the weather has changed!

I received my SPAT a couple of weeks ago (bought it when it went on sale) and I love it!!! Before I used my phone to track most things and while that was helpful, sometimes I couldn't or forgot to carry it. With the SPAT, you just put it on and go!

Peggy, I know those three evil leaves. I usually hit the root with Roundup, then let it die before pulling with three layers of disposable gloves. One of my sons is terribly allergic to poison ivy. I used to put him in the shower with dish detergent when he came in from the woods, just in case.

Beth, I hope your SPAT arrives in time for your race! It should be good for 13,500 steps, if you have the old Roman stride of "1,000 paces (mille passuum) per mile"

Nell, I just recently took a picture of some really pretty Poison Ivy. The picture is on my Sparkpage. I fondly hope that PI withdraws some of its sap into its roots during the winter, so I can tear up the little tawny twiggy bits that grow up about two feet tall from the ground. I probably don't need to warn you Never, ever burn poison ivy; the smoke is caustic to the skin and lungs.

Yep, I remember watching poison ivy's leaves turn a deep red in the fall before they fall off. I've been lucky & have never been allergic to poison ivy (neither is my dad, must have gotten it from him).

I joined a fitness challenge at work that starts on Monday. It requires step tracking, but I haven't had a Fitbit since my last one bit the dust & I returned it. I'm trying not to spend much money right now (because Kenya) so I decided I could afford the Spark Activity Tracker since it's on sale. Just ordered one, hoping it comes in in time for the fitness challenge! I also kind of wish the fitness challenge started before Saturday so I could include my race in my step count...

Does poison ivy lose its leaves in the fall? Never thought about it.

My father died 13 years ago today. I think of him every day and I think I quote him every day. The street number of the house I grew up in was 1111 Faun Road, and he died on 11/11. He would have thought that "apt", a word he used all the time.

I hope everybody is able to enjoy these moments of good weather before we get clobbered!

Spent a couple hours battling the bramble rose on the churchyard. Watch out for leafless poison ivy!

Wish I could make it Saturday! I've got my last (FINALLY!) long run, then we're celebrating my friend's 30th birthday, so I'm booked. I can't wait until running doesn't take up the majority of my Saturdays anymore!

I grew up in a 4 bedroom, 2 bath house, but my parents both had tougher circumstances. Mom grew up in a 5 bedroom house with 20 people and an outhouse. My father and his brother slept on the screened porch year round, even when they had to toss snow off the blankets in the morning. The family had the basement, the toilet was just inside the door with a curtain around it, and the shower was behind the sofa with a curtain around it. Their parents had the lone bedroom, but had to go outdoors to go back indoors to use the toilet. The 30s weren't that long ago. My how spoiled we have all become!

Yeah, Beth, we often make the snarky remark: what part of NO did you not understand - the 'n' or the 'o'? But I could flip the coin over and say: what part of NO could I not say ... Glad you're feeling better.

Well, there was a time when my parents and us five kids were living in a 4-bedroom, 2.5 bath house with basement and table-space kitchen. One of the neighbors was talking to my dad in the front yard, and she swept her hand to include the four or five cars parked in the driveway and on the street. "And the disgusting thing is, I'll bet, they're all paid off," she said. In fact, they were all paid off. My dad said as much in anger, and embarrassed the neighbor.

Good luck to them on their bid! I grew up in a 3-bed, 1-bath trailer with two parents & two siblings, and we did just fine. I do remember a couple of instances when my dad went out to the woods behind the house to make use of the bushes because one of us kids was taking too long in the shower, though ;-)

I've had this eye twitch for about a month now because of how busy I've been, and I finally laid down the law with myself and forced myself to get enough sleep the past few nights. So far today, no eye twitching yet! *knock on wood* And I actually felt like I didn't need coffee this morning for the first time all school year. There's something to be said for 8 hours of sleep a night!

I'm so glad that I'm only a week & a half from my half marathon FINALLY. I'm getting a bit grumpy about losing my Saturdays to long runs every single week. When I'm in the middle of the run and feeling awesome, it totally feels worth it, but during the rest of the week when I'm trying to squeeze in all of the errands that I didn't have the time/energy for on Saturday, I'm a little cranky about those long runs. Just one more long run, a race, then my Saturdays are mine again!

No, they own a 2 bedroom 1 bath 980 square foot condo. Now that they have two kids, it's just too small. I lived in a 2 bedroom 1 bath apartment with 3 kids at one point, but times have changed. The house they just put an offer on is 4 bedrooms and 3 baths, a tiny little cape cod on a tiny little lot for $600,000. I have no idea how many bidders there are yet, I'll know more by tonight, I hope. They'll have to move first in December and put their unit up for sale in January, so it will be financially tough on them for awhile. Daycare is as expensive as college and there are two kids in daycare. We are retired so can't be of much financial help, though I'm sure I'll be paying a moving company to avoid having to be part of a U-Haul crew.

Is your son and DIL one of many bidders on the house? Is it their first house?

I had one Trick or Treater, out while his father walked the dog. I gave him a fistful of granola bars, the rest went into the garbage.

On to leaves and Thanksgiving!

Beth, can relate about having too much to do. And I'm retired! Dummy me, when church asked me to take over the Worship & Music team with another woman, I said yes.

I was volunteering at the church this morning, and the preschool had their parade of the children in their costumes. They were so cute in their superhero and princess costumes. In the afternoon, I had a voice and piano lesson. Teacher took me up to an A flat in warm-up, which is higher than in the past. Then singing the G just under that A flat was easy. I would love to get back up to the A natural I had when I was younger.

I think I had two or three groups of trick-or-treaters at the door before I put up my "Sorry, no treats. Light is on for safety" sign. The neighborhood being smallish townhouses, there's a slow but steady turnover of newlyweds moving into their first house, then moving out when the kids are in middle school.

Dinner is done but needs to be cleaned up. It's about 6:45 and not one Trick or Treater. We've lived here for so long that my kids (15, 12, and 10 when we moved in, DH's son was in the Navy) grew out of Halloween, and all the families who moved, had kids (I went to the baby showers) who are now way too old for Halloween. We've been here for 29 years, so this is the 30th Halloween here.

It's supposed to be cold and windy this weekend, and there are a lot of leaves still on the trees just waiting to rain down. Tomorrow night we Fall Back. I love that extra hour of sleep before church on Sunday.

I know so little about cars! I didn't know about "breaking in" new engines/brakes when I bought my first new car, luckily my dad anticipated that I wouldn't know and told me about it. And the little pamphlet that came with my car told me about it, too. It said I shouldn't drive above 55 mph for the first 1000 miles, which was really hard when I was going to visit home during those first 1000 miles and was spending a lot of time on I-68 and I-79 between here and Pittsburgh! I spent a lot of time in the right lane, being passed by people actually going the 70 mph speed limit on 68...

I've decided my life is far too busy right now, and I'm trying hard to find things to cut out of my schedule. I can't afford to stop working either of my two evenings at the music school, and I can't quit worship team at church because it's my only playing outlet and I'd go crazy if I wasn't up there playing my cello on Sundays. I may ask if I can go to rehearsal only once every 2 or 3 weeks instead of every week since I know the music pretty well. And I'll have my Saturdays back in a few weeks when I'm done with my race. I always forget how much time training takes up. By the time I'm done running the 9 or 10 miles, get home, shower, and stuff my face since I'm starving, it's the middle of the afternoon and I am about falling asleep because running that much makes you tired for some strange reason. So my Saturdays are basically shot until after my race. Can't wait to run it, and can't wait to sleep in on Saturdays again! :-)
