Hi, Carla, welcome back! Glad to hear it was 'just life' keeping you busy.

Suzi, the pictures from Babb' s are gorgeous!

I went swimming at the county's indoor pool this morning. No speed records, just making sure I still knew how to do it. I asked the clerk at the front desk to check, and she found that I hadn't been there since March.

I will try to get to the get-together tomorrow. I have a home caregivers workshop in Ashburn that lasts until 1 PM.

Hi everyone! My apologies for not stopping in here for quite some time. Sometimes life just gets in the way! I've been well, enjoyed a week off of work and just relaxed. It was so nice. Not much else new on my end. My garden is coming along quite nicely. I've got 100's of cucumbers and tomatoes and quite a few peppers and squash and green beans. Already thinking about how I need to double to space next year. I only have 9 tomato plants, 5 beans, a few squash, a few herbs and 4 or 5 pepper plants. Not nearly enough compared to what I'm used to, but at least it's something!

I hope you all are well. Wow, we sure have gotten a lot of rain the past 3 days. We had bad storms 3 afternoon/evenings in a row. Hopefully it will settle down soon.

I hope the team weathered the storms yesterday well. The power stay on, the basement stayed dry, and the trees stayed up.

I dropped my cat Tillie off at the vet's today for her annual teeth cleaning. I brought the cat carrier up from the basement, and she slid upstairs and to the far corner under the bed. Ooh! Thanks to Spark people, it was much easier for me to shimmy after and get her out.

Well, more storms are forecast for today. I hope we get more rain and less wind.

Hi All

Just enjoying taking walks with our dog and going for bike rides in town.

Peggy- Bow is a very good dog-he knows sit ,stay, down, and he has not tried to get up on the sofa. He does not run out the door when it is opened! He does his stuff out side and only barks once when someone comes to the door. He does not beg for food when we sit down to eat. Someone spent a lot of time training him...I can't find anything wrong with him??? Almost to good to be true. emoticon

I need to change-and with that said....lets do this!

Suzi, that is too funny about the dog herding the kids! But he looks like a great dog.

I walked about 5 miles today: to the bank, to the post office, to Delmarva Taphouse for a salad, and home. The weather was just too lovely to be jumping in and out of the car.

We went to the dog pound and found Bow! He is a 5 year old that some one gave up because he liked emoticon to herd their children! I'm so very happy with him as he is house trained, quiet, ....what were they thinking ...I know--that lady Suzib needs a dog!

Happy Independence Day!

My heart went out the PWC chapter of the team when I was driving to visit my Mom, and listening to the reports of the traffic on I-95.

Yeah, Nell, what about that Dow closing above 17,000!. By cracky, I remember when the Dow fell from 2,200 to 1,700 in October 1987. I was listening to the radio the next morning when the announcer cheerfully read the headline "and the Dow dropped 500 points yesterday". I was drinking orange juice, and a fair amount of it went out all over the breakfast table. Then we waited 20 years for the Dow to drop 5,000 points? You can tell I'm just a little bit of a bear on the market, no? Well, I am glad that the hop over 17,000 seems to be in response to a jobs report that was pretty good.

I crossed under the beltway going to the toll road, and it was jammed in both directions. I am SO glad to be indoors away from the traffic and the rain.

The Dow closed over 17,000 today! When I first put money into a stock mutual fund, the Fidelity Magellan, back in 1982, it was the first time they started the IRA for people who worked at a place that had a retirement plan. 1981 was a year into the bear market of the early 80s, about 800 or so. Who could have imagined!

The temperature got up to 99 on my tree-shaded deck before the squall line went through and knocked the temps down into the eighties. Waiting for Arthur and the cold front to bring us relief.

I hope NoVa's are not stuck in the traffic of people leaving town for the holiday.

Hi There

Hope everyone is hiding from all this heat....I just opened our electric bill $124! A lot less than last years.

Nell- your right about puppies being adorable, I really want to rescue a dog that needs to take long walks and fits with both EB and Me! Your cats are beautiful. emoticon

Peggy-We have a great yard for a dog and our Vet said he just fixed a dog but it might take 3 months to find out what kind of personality he will have. I have not seen him but I was told he was BIG! We will just keep looking until we both agree as it is my want-but EB gets to pay for her. emoticon
I did Tia Chi this morning and then went for a bike ride...Life is Good! then I did 30 minutes of Weight Watchers cardio boxing! emoticon and took a mile walk after going to I Hop!

Nell, did you buy new knives, or have your knives sharpened?

Suzi, how is your quest for a dog coming along?

I volunteered at the church yesterday, as a lay communion server at a funeral. The widow's friends brought a ton of food for the reception, which was good because there lots of people at the service.

I hope it rains!

Suzi, it's a lot easier to select a tiny pet than an older one. The babies are all just so cute! When it's time for a new cat, I always get them at about 8 weeks old, just weaned. The older cats will accept a kitten within a month or so. An older cat, maybe never, and I avoid cat angst and the peeing around the house by sticking to kittens.

I went to the West End farmer's market this morning in Alexandria, and I now have SHARP KNIVES again!! I just cut up some lamb, onions, garlic and cilantro, and it was amazing how easy it was!

What a beautiful weekend we have had! The house has been open but the heat comes again this week, so the a/c will have to come back on.

Hi Everyone

Went to church this morning then headed to Pet Value to look at all the dogs up for adoption.
Did not agree with EB on anyone dog so we will just keep looking. Then I finished this cake for young EB. Glad that he wanted to take this to work with him tomorrow! Dark chocolate cake basted in Carmel sauce then covered in almond butter cream frosting. Dark chocolate letters and a few chopped walnuts and Ummmmm

Hi!

The gardening at the church started off as scheduled and ended only a little early when lightning was sighted. I guess the Father was tired of us creeping about the Garden, pulling up and clipping out plants we considered out of place. No snakes seen.

Back at home, the leaves are disappearing off the Sweet Violets in my backyard. Rabbits? Deer? I suspect the deer, because the leaves are also disappearing off the poison ivy -- that grows in the common area behind my house. I have a few small PI plants in my yard that I need to paint with herbicide - of course, those PI leaves will be left by the deer.

Nell, like your DH, I'm not spending a whole lot of time in the garden. The bugs are awful. I've heard it said that out-of-towners think Virginians are friendly - until they realize we're waving to shoo away the gnats.

Suzi - good luck on the dog and congratulations on your kid's milestones!

Hi There

Just a quick check-in...the gym was good but now that school is out the gym has a lot more children playing, and it is very noisy!
Peggy -Thank you!
My son will turn 21 on Monday and has requested a cake to take to work, so I will be baking this weekend. When its this hot I like to stick to Ice Cream Cakes.
I use chopped nuts for the crust and layer low sugar ice cream and lite cool whip then more low sugar ice cream. Then just sprinkle on some M&M's and freeze.
Hope to get our new dog today from Adopt A Pet {rescue]
Oh young EB made a down payment on his first apartment at V.T.! Yaaa
Hope you all are staying in from the heat....it's hot!

Peggy, my DH was out in the garden this morning but gave up. Between the oppressive humidity and the bugs it just wasn't fun. And since his strokes he can't get too hot anymore.

Hello all! It's Wednesday again and hot and humid after all the recent lovely weather. The reason I'm kvetching is that this is another day for gardening at the church, and last week's work evening was cancelled because of the weather. I hope this week will be good.

Suzi, thank you for your kind note. We all have our wisdom: yours with children and your faith ... and cakes. It's getting a little warm for baking, but have you made a cake lately, in between bird houses?

Have a good week!

Bob- Your right I did a lot of mowing....And now I have a huge wood pile that needs to be stacked! Glad it was free.

Today at the gym I did 29 minutes rowing and then rode a uprite bike for 31 minutes.
I get to go look at a dog,,,I might adopt Thursday! emoticon

Bob, the gardening at church was cancelled, so puttered around my own yard: watering plants, water myself, put sugar water in the hummingbird feeders, have a drink myself... How's the kitchen punch list work coming?

Yesterday, I helped break down the Vacation Bible School decorations. The director remarked that they spent 12 hours putting them up, but 2 hours taking them down.

Beth, a thousand best wishes for a safe trip and shared joy teaching! Bring back pictures and memories! and a recipe for tea steeped in milk!

Suzi, there are people even smarter than me who cancelled the gardening at the church. So, I'll potter around the yard here today. Maybe I'll wash my car so it will rain.

I heard on the radio that some areas got stormed on pretty good last night - any stories from the NoVa gang?

Hi All

Went to the gym today and did 32 minutes on the treadmill and 32 minutes on a spinner-9.33 miles. Just finished mowing some of the yard and then took this pic. It's too hot to cook so I-Hop wins as its 50% off on Wednesday night for seniors! Our news is that I might be adopting a dog! I hope that we are a match as they decide! I will have a walking partner if we get her.

Peggy- Thank you for the complements on the bird houses and on ME! Your smart to take cold bottles of water with you....It's HOT!

The gym tomorrow will be rowing and elliptical and the over head press! emoticon

I am 65 today, getting closer to 70 than to 60. Just got back from Wegman and Walmart to get stuff to make a nice dinner. It's a Mexican sausage mole and corn-rice bread, both WW recipes I've never made before. It will be a nice birthday experiment.

Hi All

Not sure how long it's been but I have been painting birdhouses and nailing them to our trees!
What a great hobby....no food... just a paint brush and some paint! I posted them in my photos.
Next week we will be attending my DH's 40 year class reunion. Looking forward to looking back at where he came from!
Has anyone visited Tabbs B&B--thinking that might be a good place for a mini retreat! Anniversary coming up soon.
Check out my bird houses that my DH made and I painted! To much fun! emoticon

Beth, RIP your fit bit.

Concerning the steps. They were put in Monday and Tuesday this week, so you could have blinked and missed it. I did a fair amount of research on Angie's List: looking at landscapers and the jobs they did for reviewers. It seems that very few people want jobs as small as mine, and the price per cubic yard of concrete goes up accordingly to cover the labor costs. I did short list three companies, but couldn't get motivated to contact them, so I threw in the towel and accepted the proposal I had. They did send a crew of two, who had to spend most of the days on site watching the concrete cure. They did a good job and didn't trample the shrubbery.

Hey all!

Bob, how was Ringo!? I saw a few of my facebook friends posting pictures from it, it looked awesome!

Peggy, I must have been absent when you got the steps! Last I remember, you were still getting estimates for them. I hope they were reasonably-priced!

I just made a facebook event for tomorrow's meet up for anyone who can make it. It feels like it's been FOREVER since I've been to one! (Really, it's only been since April, right?)

I forgot to mention that my Fitbit bit the dust. It stopped turning on one day, and customer service recommended I return it to where I got it from. So, I took it back to Target, they gave me a refund on a gift card, and I went back to see if I could find one to replace it. They were out of stock, and I have a lot of stuff I'm trying to buy for Kenya, so I decided it was probably better that I use the money for Kenya stuff than for a new Fitbit (which I wouldn't be able to use in Kenya anyway since I couldn't regularly upload the data). I'll probably get a new one in August when I get back, and I just won't have it until then. I can survive without it, and the scale's downward trend is confirming that ;-)

Peggy - I am going to try to have at least as much time. We will substitute organized sports for hikes, bike rides, tennis and swimming. How interesting to have to get used to something like those steps.

Celia - Thank you. I went to the gym and had a good workout. That rain was crazy.

Nell/CELLOSONG - I worked search and rescue for the coast guard for many years with a lot of the same situations.

No workout for me today. Will leave work early to go to Wolftrap for Ringo Star and his all star band. Hope the rain is at least light.

Bob

Celia, you did what the woman asked for, and you did what you could. You did good. I have this vision of the woman sitting in the rehab center, wondering who that woman was who stopped to help her.

Yeah, my brother is an EMT and a 911 operator, and he's struggled with anxiety & depression because of it. He posts stories on facebook from some support groups he's in, and I can see how easy it would be to be anxious & depressed in that job. The story that stuck with me most was of one 911 operator who was on the phone with a woman hiding under her bed because of an intruder in her house who she believed was trying to harm her. She stayed on the phone with 911 as long as possible, then the woman whispered that he was right outside her door and she couldn't stay on the phone any more and she hung up. The 911 operator never found out what happened. I can't imagine having to live with that being my job. I really respect people like my brother who are able to be there for those people.

Wow, Celia, that poor woman. Sometimes all you can do is call 911, that's why it's there. I have a friend who is a retired cop. He said one the things he had to get used to right away when he started working is that you are there in the beginning of a million dramatic stories but you very seldom ever know how they turn out.

Peggy, bet you were amused when your mom complimented your new/old jeans. Glad the bird babies are out to keep you entertained.

Bob, good luck with the backsplash and with getting a workout in. Raining up here in Silver Spring, too. I hope it dries up enough to walk outside. I'd just go out with an umbrella, but I'm wearing the clothes I'll go to dinner in tonight, since I won't have time to change. Don't need any road spray to get them dirty.

In the life-can-change-so-quickly department, I came upon a woman this morning lying on the ground amid broken glass and asking for tissue. I ran into Starbucks for napkins and came back out as a man tried to help her to her feet. She went right back down, asking for an ambulance and saying she couldn't walk. There was little blood, but she directed the person I handed the napkins to to keep pressure on the back of her foot. I can only surmise that broken glass slashed a tendon. In spite of all the first aid training I've had, I felt really inadequate, like I didn't do enough for her. I sure hope she's okay. Her life changed quickly this morning.

Beth, I have drawers organized by size, too. I donated many pairs of pants that were too big. My mom saw me wearing a pair of jeans formerly in the too-small drawer and complimented me on buying new clothes.

Bob, I'm always admiring your workouts. With school being out, will you have more time with the kids or less time?

Celia, yes, the titmice are bringing the kids to the feeder, and so are the downy woodpeckers. I hope the MRI finds something easy to fix.

Nell, I guess the only thing worse than being of a mind to get a new car is this: that no cars on the market interest you.

I'm getting used to the new steps up to the house. I keep jolting myself as I expect a 12-inch step down, but the step is now only 6 inches.

Celia - It is just a white subway tile. I have no idea why this is difficult for these supposed tile guys. Upper body workout was good. Hope your procedure goes smooth.

Nell - Just white subway tile as shown in my pictures. They cannot get it even though.

Great workout yesterday. Don't know if I will have time to get one in today. Hope so. It will be legs if I do.

Bob, what kind of backsplash tile are you using that is so hard to get right? I have small, thin glass tiles, and needed a guy who knew how to install them. Different adhesive, different technique.

Beth, great problem to have when your "too small" clothes become "too big" clothes.

Bob, why is it so hard to get the backsplash right? Hope you get that upper body workout done.

I told DH about the conversation on bathroom use. He reminded me of a funny picture for long-term relationship Barbie:
funnyasduck.net/post/9882

Anyway, today I'm trying to tie up loose ends for some upcoming medical procedures. I have an MRI with contrast on my hip next Monday to see if it shows something torn in there. It sure feels like my knee did when I had a torn meniscus, only the hip issue is much more painful. I also need to coordinate my warfarin with my PCP before I have some vein surgery next month. Else, I need to dodge some raindrops and get a good walk in.

I cannot make a meet up on Saturday
We still have to have the backsplash in the kitchen redone. Third time is the charm right?
CELLOSONG - Sounds like great problems to have when your skinny clothes are too big
The rain comes and goes. Hopefully will dodge the raindrops and get an upper body workout in.

Yes, I've love a meetup this Saturday, especially since we missed May. Beth, won't you be in Kenya for July and August? Maybe wide leg khakis will come back in style. I remember thinking that mid-century modern was thankfully gone, and now, thanks to Mad Men, it's back.

I got the call from the dealership. The repairs (plus a couple of maintenance jobs) will come to about $2000. Sigh. Since there isn't another car out there I want, I need to keep this one going.

Hey all! It has been just about forever since I've checked in here, and I had my final concert of the year last night, so I decided I deserved a spark check-in today!

Anyone up for the meet-up on Saturday? I miss you all and would love to catch up on what I've been missing on the thread here before I hit the road for the summer!

Things are still busy, busy, busy with the end of the school year clashing with my Kenya prep. Only 8 more school days for me, and 14 days until I'm on my way!

I decided to dive into my "too-small" drawer last night to see what pants I had. I found a pair of jeans that were already almost too big! I'm glad to add them to my "fits well" drawer :-) I found my favorite pair of capris from two summers ago that I couldn't even get over my hips last summer--last night, I got them on & zipped! They were far too uncomfortably tight to wear, but the fact that they zipped was a huge victory. I'm taking them to Kenya with me in hopes of them fitting before I come home! I also got rid of a couple of pairs of pants that were past their prime style-wise. Hopefully someone at Goodwill will still like those wide-leg khakis!

Hope you're all having a great June so far, and hope to see you all on Saturday!

Peggy, I love that the birds take suet back to the nest. Bet you can't wait for the babies to come down and learn to feed themselves.

Bob, glad you are enjoying your new kitchen.

Nell, we have double sinks in the master bath, and we are in there together frequently. As for the need for privacy, that took years to get over, but there are still times....

Went to my high school 40-year reunion over the weekend and had a blast. As hard as high school was for a nerd that didn't fit in, I'm happy to say people turned out okay. But then not one of us is the same person we were back then.

Just took my car to the Subaru dealer in Manassas, and I have a loaner. When I got out of Costco on the way home, it was dark, but the rain was a line down route 28, and I drove into it toward Walmart. When they say localized downpours, they mean localized!

Sign of summer: the house finches and titmice bring their fledglings to the seed feeder and feed them. Very noisy around the feeder.

The last of the Navahoe Code Talkers from World War II died recently. I also heard that veterans of WWII are during at a rate of 600 per day. emoticon

Peggy - I know the first person to leave a mark is going to get an earful. It is fun to watch the birds.

Nell - That is a lot of stovetop for one day. The meals sound delicious. Have fun with your sister.

My sister and BIL are coming here shortly to bunk over for the night. They will head down to DC to spend the weekend with his family. Today I made English Muffins and Deviled Eggs for breakfast. For dinner I made a vegetable curry and mango raita, and chapatis. They're a pain, you have to cook them one at a time directly on a rack on the stove flame, but oh are they good! That's a lot of stovetop bread in one day.

Hi, Bob, got a chuckle that you are so, so, so careful not to scuff up your new kitchen. Does it smell New?

Nell, you mentioned that my neighbor who is sunbathing on her sunny deck will have a nicer lawn because of all the additional sunlight. Well, turns out she had all the grass taken up and put down pavers, with a planting strip around the perimeter. She told me she's looking forward to not having to mow the yard. I laugh. Just when you think you've got people pegged, they go and do something completely different.

Sign of summer: Catbirds and woodpeckers come to the suet feeder. They peck off three or four bites for themselves, then carve off a morsel to take back to the nest.

Hello! Got back home from visiting with my Mom in Bethany Beach. We went to the annual meeting of the HOA. Which wasn't too painful: a lot of discussion of the new flood maps FEMA is working on and the resolution of the account receivable on one of the units that went into foreclosure. Also watched the osprey nests in the Nature Center. Last year, a second pair of ospreys started a nest, but the tree blew down over the winter. We're very pleased that the pair came back and built a nest in another tree. Although we could see that the birds were taking turns sitting on the nests, we couldn't see if the eggs had hatched.

Beth, what's the Kenya count these days?

Bob, congratulations on the near completion of your kitchen.

Celia, very impressed with the half marathon time.

Carla, Suzi, Nell, hope you are doing well. Are you sitting back and enjoying your gardens and lawns?

Nell - That is what we did. I think the storage will be much like you mentioned. I think it will not fade from our minds until the last payment is made on the line of credit. We have double sinks in our master bath and it is rare that we are in there at the same time.

Celia - Thanks on the kitchen. Great job on the half marathon.

Today is lacrosse practice for exercise for me. we play in a semi final game on Saturday and if we win the finals are on Sunday.

I watch a lot of HGTV and all these younger folks are looking for huge master bathrooms with double sinks so they can be in there at the same time. Really?? I don't care how big the bathroom is, I don't want to be in there at the same time. It's bad enough having to mop up after him, but actually watching him throw water around, knowing he doesn't have to clean up after himself, would drive me nuts. We take turns, and would no matter how many sinks were in there. More goes on in a bathroom than hair and makeup. Younger folks must be less into privacy.

Nell, I just about busted a gut trying not to laugh out loud at your comment about sharing a bathroom again. I have a hard enough time sharing a bathroom with my spouse now. I can't imagine getting used to sharing with someone else. When I go on trips solo, I always pay the single supplement so I won't have to share accommodations with someone. As for the housework, DH and I settled into a routine. I'd much rather scrub toilets, and he'd much rather vacuum. I do all the laundry (I'm particular) and pay the joint bills; he takes care of his herbs and other plants and occasionally washes the cars.

Bob, the kitchen looks great! I especially like the extra counter space. There never seems to be enough room to work. Of course a big part of that in my house is that every horizontal surface gets stacked with clutter.

This past weekend, I accomplished my goal to jog/walk a half marathon in 3 hours or less at the Virginia Wine Country Half at Doukenie Winery in Loudoun County. Chip time was 2:59:55...overkill, since I had 5 whole seconds to spare.

Bob, it looks wonderful! You did pretty much the same thing I did: everything is in pretty much the same place but better quality and a LOT more lighting. It makes it easier to load in the kitchen, too, because you know where everything goes. I see you got rid of the soffit for a taller cabinet. I love my high cabinets, but the top is for the stuff I use once a year because I need a ladder to get it down. Almost done! Once you write that last check you'll forget the pain. It's hard to believe that something that filled your mind for so long: deciding to do it, finding the contractor and picking stuff out, emptying the kitchen and cooking in a satellite kitchen, then restoration, will be forgotten in a day as you revel in the finished product!

Peggy, always good to take things in! :-)

Bob-looking forward to the pics when you have more time.

Busy Monday for me. Made an avocado salad tonight. It was grilled corn cut off the cob, avocado (chopped in smallish chunks), cilantro, cherry tomatoes (halved) and a honey lime dressing that used oil, garlic, honey and cayenne pepper. It was really good. Had that with leftover pork chops we grilled this weekend.

It's not so much busier in retirement as a different concept of time. Most of the rushing is over, so while it's still one thing after another, it's all stretched out, more relaxed timewise. Work really does expand to fill the time allotted. I had no idea how delicious time felt when I was working. We planned for retirement every day of our marriage, though, lived way below our means, so we never got accustomed to "more".

Bob, my husband has never done housework in his life. He never thought it was women's work exactly, he just didn't think it was his. At 40 it was too late to start training him. It's easier to just do it myself. Fortunately our sons are full contributors to their households.

Nell

No one ever got up in the morning wishing she'd eaten more the night before.
