I'll be adding something when we finish up the Journeys that each patrol is doing. I also have a Julitte Low one to add for the 100th year.

I try to encourage outdoor and fitness activities outside of badgework. I have instituted a system where I track the various outdoor/active events that the girls do. They get a "point" for each event. At certain levels they get an acorn charm for a charm bracelet we are building. We call this our ACORN award for Active Cadette (& above) Outdoor Recreation eveNts.

Here is an article about Girl Scouts fighting Obesity!

Girl Scouts save teens from obesity

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) - From selling cookies and earning merit badges, to helping researchers fight obesity, Girl Scouts are testing out a new fitness program that even lets them text and spend time on Facebook to get them more physically active.

A select group of Girl Scouts are part of a study to fight obesity. Experts say by the time they hit middle school, girls' physical activity drops by 34 percent. Eight of the nine fattest states for kids report obesity rates of more than 20 percent.

Researchers created the "Be Fit With Friends", or BFF program, teaming up with the Girl Scouts. The girls earn points and win prizes for taking part in community fitness events.

Social media is a big part of the program. The girls get motivational text messages and even have a Facebook fan page to upload pictures. Researchers hope the BFF program helps the girls realize fitness should be their best friend forever.

35 girls took part in the fitness study and the data is currently being analyzed. Another organization picked it up as part of a summer program for another 100 girls.

HEre is an article about talking to little girls about how they look - I never thought of it this way but it does make sense and is something that I am going to try to incorporate more into my meetings.

Do you know they will be coming out with a new badges for each level? So even though the badges we are familiar with will be going away, they will be recreating them in a different way outside of the Journey awards.

I love it when scouts reach out to others - both people and community resources (like the nature conservancy)!!!

I work at a local nature conservancy and we lead badge programs (or did till they dropped all the "old" try-its, badges and IPAs). We took girls outside to observe nature and always included a hike.

I just looked it up, it looks like there are several games with that name, but here's how we played:

Set up an area - square or rectangle
Pick one person to be "Octopus"
Everyone else lines up on one side of the area.
Octopus hollers "go" and the kids run from the start side to the opposite side. While they are running the Octopus tries to tag them. Anyone who is tagged grabs hold of the octopus and then they work together to tag the others while the untagged run back & forth across the area until everyone but one is part of the Octopus. Last one not tagged wins.

The girls LOVED it!!!

This is another version that sounds neat: familyfun.go.com/playtime/oct

We taught the girls (Brownies) how to play Octopus Tag and they had a blast with that! They even begged to do that instead of sitting around eating pizza for the end of year party!

How do you incorporate Health and Fitness into your Journey / Badge work or other activities you do with your girls to teach them healthy habits?

One of my Brownie's favorite meetings last year was when the local Community Health Center came to talk about healthy habits. They talked about brushing your teeth, feelings, and the girls' favorite - hand washing. They had some ultraviolet lotion that the girls put on their hands and then washed off and then they used a blacklight to see had good / bad they had done washing.
