I decided to take the Walkabout Challenge for my March Challenge. It involves only 10 minutes each day, to begin with. Today was Day 2, and the reading for the day had to do with injuries... and plantar fasciitis is discussed in the article. It's good reading...

I have had a slight twinge of PF lately... I think it is partly due to weather and long days on my feet at work. But doing my little stretches and massages has kept the real pain at bay. I plan on keeping it that way, too! LOL!
As long as I can do some movement, I will be grateful!

We haven't had too bad of weather this week. It has been nice enough to take the kiddos outside (I work at a preschool.) Today is raining and cold. Snow and freezing rain forecasted to the north of us but we seem to be in the clear.

I had been religiously working out. I am on my 8th week of working out 6 days a week. I have only missed 2 additional workouts other than my one allotted day of rest. But i have been slacking on tracking food. Hadn't tracked food since Dec 30. I gained 5 pounds. UGH! But I know that the holidays have contributed to that.

I began tracking again yesterday and was happy to be in calorie range but knew I had been going over because I didn't quite feel as full as I had been. Time to shrink the stomach again. I am frustrated with myself because I knew I needed to be tracking but didn't. 3 out of 4 meals a day (Breakfast, lunch, snack, and dinner) are not at home - makes it harder to track but I will do this.

Since I began this weight lose journey, I have lost 25 pounds (30 but gained back 5) and inches around my waist, hips, and thighs. I am 2 sizes down in clothes and have so much energy. It is awesome. I have to keep going for my health. I will!! But I got to stay on track. I can do this!!

My feet don't bother me near as much daily as they did before I started my exercise videos but occasionally they really hurt. This morning my left foot is really hurting but I worked out through it. Now I am resting it.

Sorry for rambling on. Just needed to get that off my chest.

There have been several near misses here. Sleet and hail occasionally, but nothing that sticks. No snow last year either, although last winter the year of storms. My 4 year old can't wait to play in the snow.

Hi! I'm getting ready to clean out the fridge and stock up on cleaner foods. CATHOLICCORGI, what are nightshade foods? I'm wondering because inflammation seems to be a big part of my health issues over the last few years, but the doctors office I go to doesn't seem to make a connection between foods and health issues, except to tell me to lose weight.

My feet are a bit painful this morning... I've been pain free for a couple of months. I wonder if the weather affects PF? It has been rainy, and now it is getting cold again.
At the first twinge of pain, I have done my little tendon stretches, and it has eased the discomfort. I've not done anything different to inflame my feet, unless it is tied to foods I have eaten. I try to avoid "night shade" foods because of my Rheumatoid Arthritis, and I have been a bit slack with that over the holidays. Guess since PF is inflammation in the foot, the food could have a part it it...I'm back on my stricter eating plan, so I will see if the pain subsides with my eating clean again. If it does, then I will be far more vigilant with what I eat. Once on the lips is not worth the pain in the body!
May we all Spark 2015 and be the best we can be!

Michelle it's nice to know your PF is pretty much under control. I'm so sorry to hear about your bronchitis. I have taken this week off from walking, but have not been good about doing other exercises. I have only done my recumbent bike twice this week emoticon . My PF is better without the walking, but I will be back to it Monday. I'm determined to get on my bike today and have a good start of eating healthy and within my calorie range. Let's just do what we need to even if we don't feel like it, emoticon .

Good to hear your progress, BUSY4HER! I'm pretty much pain-free as long as I wear my insoles. I still haven't gotten back to running, but that has more to do with my asthma than with my feet. Haven't had real good breathing stats since my last bout of bronchitis and may need to get my meds adjusted. That has slowed the weight loss process, but I have no trouble walking so don't want to use that as an excuse.

Blessings, Michelle

How is everyone doing? On the PF front, I hope you are all feeling less pain and steadily improving. I am hanging in there and have stuck to my exercises. It has been helpful in eliminating the foot pain first that can come with your first steps in the morning. In terms of weight loss efforts I have stayed the course, but have not made any progress lately. Well, you know what they say, "no news is good news."

I edited my URL link for the exercises today (10/6/14) because it was wrong!

Just a little update, I have found some exercises that are really helping with the pain. I'm happy to report that my new inserts have made a big difference. I can walk and have very little pain afterward. When the pain hits I do some exercises and the stretching seems to fend it off. Here's a link to the exercises that I like (https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=pla
yer_embedded&v=kStuJAu0a20). If that doesn't work you can do a search, it's titled "Plantar Fascia Exercises" and is made by Pat Stanziano, a Sport Physiotherapist. I took a look a chair cardio exercise link one of our members posted and am embarrassed to say I didn't even make it though the whole thing, but am excited to find something different I can do when I have long periods of sitting at home. How are things going with you?

Hi,

I'm new and just wanted to check in and see what's going on. I'm also new to PF and am looking for some good exercises. Does anyone have any links or articles that are good? CATHOLICCORGI, I love my recumbent bike! It's a lifesaver when I can't get out for exercise and is so easy on the body. I look forward to getting to know everyone.

Doing the stretch where I pull my big toe back and massage my arch has done wonders for my heel pain. My PCP gave me knee strengthening exercises that have helped with the knee. My chiropractor has done wonders, too. I've ridden the recumbent bike everyday for 6 days. I was able to walk the treadmill om two occasions. I am improving. The exercise makes me feel SO much better!

Hi everyone I have been seeing a podiatrist in Green Bay for mine and mine has been horrible, I have been through physical therapy with no relief. I had a 4th cortisone shot and it didn't work. Now he is trying a surgical boot and cork in my shoe to help with my left foot. I walk with a cane in the house since it's so bad.

Thanks for the tip, but unfortunately, I've already lost my marbles... I'll be on the lookout for some though, maybe Walgreens toy section has them.

I just bought a foot roller ball off Amazon for ~ $6, it is golfball size, green, with nubs. Trying it out right now for first time. I tried a golf ball and it was so slippery it rolled around too much, but this little green ball, ouch! I can really pin it down and get a good massage. I have a section of pool noodle that I need to try on my calves. I was just reading about heel spurs being blamed, often, because they show up on xrays (20% of people have them, and they aren't necessarily related to pain) anyway, addressing them is not so helpful.

Re my Sugar Addiction (and like many addicts, I have to spout off zealously, lol, so I'm also posting this paragraph on my BLC23 team just in case it might help someone else recognize/defeat a sugar addiction, cause mine sure has made me fat and I'm DONE with it!)
**I fell off my "NO sugar" diet last night at my husband's birthday party, just had a LITTLE bit (about one ounce) of cake, and 2 oz of ice cream and even though the calories weren't killer, I felt so sick. And then I ate cheese trying to stabilize my blood sugar levels, so it was like old times. Tons of fat, sugar, calories, and out of control. :( really blew my diet. First time deliberately eating sugar since Aug 18th when I quit it and started my low fat, log food, exercise program. Up to that point in my life I had been constantly in some state of sugar cravings, and often nightly binge eating. Without sugar 100%, and on 15-20% fat max, walking daily, I was feeling incredibly calm and not food obsessed. It was a miracle! Now I have to go through the 5-6 days (my experience of how long it takes to quit craving it) of withdrawal again to get off this horrible drug(sugar IS a very addictive drug, don't underestimate it!) so I can eat logically, sanely, without having constant cravings day and night. Today= It's a nice day to START AGAIN! I would recommend to everyone trying to lose weight to quit sugar. Eat fruit instead.

I'm very heavy and my feet take a huge pounding, just walking. They are my "weak link" on exercising off the weight, even though what I need to stay on track is to keep walking! Runner's feet also take a pounding, so I think this article is relevant. Is there anything they missed besides picking up marbles? That does sound like fun. ;)

Five Do-It-Yourself Remedies For Plantar Fasciitis
By Sabrina Grotewold
Published Mar. 19, 2013
The right kind of self treatment can help you knock out Plantar Fasciitis, a common and annoying injury.
Experiencing persistent pain and stiffness in the bottom of the heel or foot? The cause of this either sharp or dull discomfort could be plantar fasciitis, inflammation of the thick tissue, or fascia, that runs along the bottom of the foot. Common among distance runners with chronically tight hamstrings, back, calves and Achilles tendons, or those who run in shoes without proper arch support, the condition may also be caused by a muscular imbalance in the hips or pelvis. This imbalance can cause slight compensations in the stride that place more stress on one leg than the other, according to San Diego-based running coach Jon Clemens, who has a master’s degree in exercise physiology. While correcting the imbalance permanently requires a strength program that focuses on balance, calf- and pelvis-strengthening drills, said Clemens, treatment to temporarily relieve the inflammation can be performed easily at home.
In addition to stopping or reducing running, Clemens recommends completing this daily regime until the pain subsides.
1. Stretch the fascia. Prop your toes up against a wall, keeping your arch and heel flat so the toes stretch. Hold for a count of 10. Repeat 10 times three or four times per day.
2. Roll a frozen water bottle under the arch. “Stretch first then roll out the arch for 10 minutes; you don’t want to stretch the tendon when it’s ice cold,” Clemens said.
3. Freeze a golf ball and massage the fascia. Roll the frozen golf ball under the foot, starting from the front and working your way back. Put good pressure on each spot—the medial, center and lateral positions—for 15 seconds before moving to the next area. Then, roll the ball back and forth over the entire foot.
4. Foam roll all muscles on the body above the plantar. “Even tight shoulders can cause the condition, as your arm swing can throw off proper hip alignment and footstrike,” Clemens said.
5. Bump your arch. “Get a commercial insole with an arch bump to push on the plantar and keep it from flexing—it doesn’t matter if you’re an under or overpronator; the plantar needs to be supported and strengthened,” Clemens advised. “Wear the support in all shoes, if possible.”

My feet are a little better, I'm trying to stretch before getting out of bed. After 5k and stiffening up, not so good. Might try epsom salt soak and golf ball or other roller

Got my first pair of Orthaheels yesterday..black sandals. So far so good. The PF pain has been lessening as I wear the brace at night and the custom insoles in all my shoes...so I'm optimistic!

I've still been having a rough time of it, but have managed to stay within my calorie range. I feel good about that. I'm trying really hard to watch my portion sizes and make wise choices in what I eat. I still make mistakes and eat the wrong thing every now and then, but I try to compensate with eating something healthy afterwards. It's been a challenge.

I just weighed myself today and gained 3 pounds. Not what I wanted to see this morning. For the last two weeks I have had weight gains. I'm going in the wrong direction. I really have to do something so that I don't see another weight gain. I know part of my problem is that I have been eating over my calorie limit and my portions have been a little larger than they should be. So I need to reduce my portions and concentrate on staying within my calorie limit.

I am pretty new to the team and my PF is flaring in a bad way. I was in the hospital for five days and the constant rest with no walking around did not do good things for my feetsies! So I am doing the frozen water bottle and rolling my feet over that, scrunching up the towels, what other fascinating things should I be doing?

I was training for a couch to 5k and now that is off (my race was Sep 21, I am crushed) and that was how I developed the PF. I haven't figured out the landing more on the ball of my foot yet. I hit full force on my heels which I know is bad bad bad.

Hope all is well with everyone

Haven't participated much on the board or thread, although I have read lots of posts and am grateful for all the tips I've found here.

I feel like my foot is getting better. I ordered one of the brace-type boot things and have been wearing it faithfully every night. No problem at all with the comfort...fortunately, I'm not one to toss in my sleep! Part of the improvement is that it is also cooler and my feet aren't swelling during the course of the day like they were. And I've also been wearing my orthotic inserts every day. Still need to get the new ones made and hope to do that this week. Lots of stretching, rolling my arch over a frozen water bottle, etc, etc.

Now, just need to get the weight down because I know that will help, too!

Happy Labor Day weekend!

Blessings, Michelle

I haven't been doing so good. I've been eating over my calorie range and I have had a sweet tooth really bad that I can't shake. I have given in to this sweet tooth and have been eating a lot of ice cream and candy. It wouldn't be bad if I just ate the ice cream, but I'm eating the ice cream and the candy in one day at one sitting. Right now I haven't gained or lost any weight, but that isn't going to last forever. I really need to change this destructive behavior. I feel like I'm falling apart.

I went on a picnic yesterday and did really poorly staying within my calorie range. I went over my calories by about 300 calories. I was not happy when I recorded what I ate, which I was trying to be very careful on what I was eating and how much I was eating. I must have been eating more than I thought because I sure packed in the calories. I have another picnic tomorrow and I hope I do better there.

Hi Barbie - You will have to let me know how those wooden rollers work out after your husband makes them for you. Glad the new stretches are working for you. It's always nice to have some exercise work instead of having to go to the doctor. Hope everything continues to work out for you.

Have a fantastic Thursday everyone!

Hello TURTLE69 : )

Yeah I know if I could get this weight off it would help me a great deal as well , unfortunately the weight is sticking if me . Hope to change that soon and get rid of some , would love to be in Onelander the end of this year .

I started doing calf stretch and calf raises today along with rolling my ice bottle plus seen on web site where you cross your leg and hold onto your heel and pull back your big toe for 30 seconds and you are to do that 3 times . Plus a found this website with a pattern to make a set of those wooden roller foot massagers , so hubby is going to make me and him a set . It has 4 wooden nubby roller on each side for each foot , and you roll them with your feet back and forth .

I wear Skechers D'Lites plus I put a Dr Schroll custom orthotic in them , I have a coupe old set of New Balance that I wear with some Spenco insert when I am able to work in my garden .

I tell ya these last 2 months though have been terrible :(
Can not wait until they ease up and heal some .

Have a Good Night , talk to you soon : )

HI Barbie - I do my exercises, which consist of various stretching exercises, rolling a golf ball on my heel, and picking up marbles with my toes. I also wear New Balance shoes that have a high number because the higher the number the better the arch support. Mine is in the 1000. I have New Balance arch supports that I use too. My doctor has recommended that I change my shoes out every six months so I do that too. Since I've been doing that and have taken off some weight my plantar fasciitis isn't as bad as it was.

That's right Rafferm. Forget what happened yesterday and start fresh today. We all have those days when we go over our calories.

The food tracker really can be a wakeup call. Yesterday I threw caution to the wind when I went out for supper with frieds and ended up way over my calorie count! But, today is a new day and it will get better!

Friday is finally here. I've done really well staying within my calories. Haven't done much as far as exercising goes. I've done just the exercises that the physical therapist gave me for my back. Not really a lot but it is something. It really isn't helping my back either.

Glad your back tracking Teresa. It's good to keep track of what your eating and doing. My back is about the same. I'm done with physical therapy for now. I have to go back to the doctor to see where we go from here. Physical therapy really didn't help my back out. I'm still doing my back exercises though.

I've been MIA since spring break (vacation) and Easter. My work load has been killer! Today is my "newest" Day One! I'm tracking for the first time in over two weeks! I hope every one is doing well. Vanessa, how's your back? How's the PT going?

Glad to hear from you and that the switch in your boots is giving you less pain Jacebel.

I wasn't keeping track of my eating until now and I thought I had gone over my calories, but I stayed within them. Yeah!

Physical therapy went fine yesterday. However, I always seem to hurt more when I leave there. I know the exercises are supposed to make my back feel better but they don't. I'm still in a lot of pain and discomfort.

Teresa - sounds like you've been quite productive. Glad you've been getting your bike rides in. I've just been doing my back exercises. I go to physical therapy tomorrow and I haven't really improved any with my back exercises.

My Saturday plans are to finish sewing a quilt I made for a baby shower. It's a "rag quilt" so they go together pretty quickly. Today promises to be lovely outside and there will be a bike ride squeezed in as well. I really wish my PF would heal up because I enjoy the walking so much. I am thankful to have the bike, which helps me get outside and does not make the PF worse. I hope everyone has a productive, or lazy, Saturday...which ever kind you prefer!

Nothing new here, really either. I did get in a bike ride, my first one since Saturday. The time change is going to help...HEAPS! I am looking forward to the weekend. Next week I have 3.5 days of school and then I'll be off for spring break! That's the goal I have my eye on! My break will be busy, but I plan on a trip south for a few days to visit my brother and sister and hit the beach in Bradenton. My Serotonin levels should be quite fine after that!

Hello right back to all you. Not much new going on for me. I've been doing back exercises to work on my back problem. That seems to be going slowly. Haven't really been doing much of anything else, but a little walk. It's quite stressful since my back is bothering me so much. I'm doing the best I can though.

I'm just getting home tonight...still after dark even with the time change....so no bike ride for me, tonight! However, I did find time to work in a delicious Delmonico steak. emoticon

My husband brought those steaks home about 3 days ago and I told him I wasn't going to eat one... and that he could have both of 'em. ($14.00 for two steaks) But I was SO starving when I got home, I grabbed that package, as quick as a wink, I broiled those puppies up! (ignoring the package of fresh chicken breast directly under the steaks). I had broccoli and fruit salad with the steak. I'm sure it was a ton of calories....I haven't tracked it yet... It sure tasted good, though!

On the bright side....I lost 3 lbs since last Monday...and am down 17lbs total. I am at 229 lbs! My next big deal will be either seeing a ONE in the tens place.... the "teens" OR fitting back into an old pair of pants.

I probably won't be on much tomorrow...we have a spaghetti dinner at school and I will be home very late!

Have a great night!
