I volunteer at an assisted living/retirement home that is down the street from me. I so love the people there. I call bingo, have a prayer break, and host a tea social for them. Unfortunately, not all residents attend these activities, but I have been fortunate to also just get to know them through just seeing them often enough in the lobby. Pets are allowed there, so my Japanese chin, Blossum volunteers with me. She is small enough, the people there love to pet and cuddle with her. She would have made a great therapy dog if I had known about it earlier. Her and I have been working there since 2007. It is just a part of who I am now.

I am a Girl Scout leader. MY daughter is a 13 year Girl Scout. This year we are volunteers together. We usually just help with fall camp out.

My husband and I also help out with several Duck's Unlimited chapters. We help on the State committee as well.

I am just starting up a chapter of Red Hat Society. We plan on doing different things occasionally. Making tie blankets for homeless, food drives, School supply drives, etc.

I volunteer in a variety of ways for my church-communion and on the church council for education. I have also been a 4-h leader this past year and have helped a local group who support people in need in our town. I am going to donate some time to our county health department tomorrow by helping with a health fair at a local high school.

Hello one and all! I am a stay-at-home mom, but while my boys are in school, I try to give my time to volunteering. I really hope to make a difference in the world!
I teach Jr Church (grades K-6) every 3rd week and also sing on the church Praise Team, I am music and memory verse teacher for our school's Good News Club (only 14 meetings throughout the school year), and I volunteer once or twice a week at our local Pregnancy Care Center as receptionist and counselor.
I am also actively involved in fund raising and awareness for autism related charities. Both my boys have autism to varying degrees.

I have been volunteering my time to cancer charities helping out at events. I was the Food Chairperson this year for our local Relay For Life. In June I checked in walkers for the Rocky Mountain Avon breast cancer walk. Tomorrow I am checking in walkers for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Light the Night walk.

3 days a month I volunteer at a local food bank. Once a month I volunteer for the Humane Society.

Iíve been an animal girl all my life, having grown up on an orchard with dogs, cats, ducks, chickens, rabbits and the occasional mouse or hamster. But it wasn't until 2011 that I found my true passion when I began volunteering with the cats at the Agoura Animal Shelter. I feel privileged that I am able to help animals that have lost their homes, through no fault of their own. At times the work can be heartbreaking but is worth every moment each time a cat finds a new family.
I also sit on the board for a non-profit organization (Malibu Pet Companions) that provides medical care to shelter animals that the county cannot afford to treat. Iím one of the newest board members & Iím thrilled to have the opportunity to further increase my ability to help the shelter babies.

Today I just volunteered to participate in a walkathon called March for Dimes to support babies born premature. If you live in Sacramento, you should join me on this event. There is also locations in different states holding this event. I want to make a difference and see families happy instead of struggling and crying because they don't know if their baby will make it. Make a baby healthy! I am trying to raise at least $1000
Please support by joining me or making a donation at www.MarchforBabies.org/ErnaCandic

I volunteer with a nonprofit that is a resource to individuals with mental health needs. I work sometimes at a center helping out as an administrative assistant or maybe cleaning or other things. My bigger project right now is with another part of the organization editing the newsletter that goes out to not just this organization but the mental health community and the whole area at large. In the past, I have volunteered at elementary schools, doing Coastal Cleanups at beaches, at one local AIDS project where people could get tested or receive condoms and information about services as well as helping set up for outreach events. One other one in the past was a brief time working with a nonprofit that campaigned and provided resources to workers who were not receiving benefits, like farm workers or certain hospital workers (not RNs or other nurses, but maybe hospital custodians) and other types of employees that were being undervalued. I love volunteering and making a difference.

Volunteering is the rent you pay for your space on earth!

Hi, I'm Kayleigh. I am currently a volunteer at the Ronald McDonald House. It is so much fun and very rewarding. I started volunteering because when I was pregnant, for some reason, I had this ultimate urge to help people. So after my son was born, I started doing awareness walks, donating blood, money, toys, and food. I became a volunteer at RMH and am actually about to start volunteering for Habitat for Humanity. I want my career to be something related to all of this because helping people is what I love doing. :)

That is great that you do all the volunteering with school related things for your kids and other kids as well. Even though you are a single mom of 3 that works full time, you still find the time to give back to your community and that is fantastic!!! How sweet of your kids to want to spend more time with you!

I've spent the last 6 years volunteering with scouting - girl scouts and cub scouts, leading up to 2 troops at a time. This will be my first year not volunteering with scouting in a while. All 3 of my kids have left scouting - partly to keep me from leading any more scouting. They want me at home with them instead of at scouting meetings.

I work with both of my kids schools doing what's needed that I can do. Some of it is PTA, some of it is other things for school related activities. Helping with school parties. Helping with the annual Sock Hop. Fundraising.

Last year I worked with my oldest daughter's Robotics team by writing up over 200 bid sheets for a silent auction.

Since it's a new school year starting, I don't know yet exactly what I'll be pulled into with the schools - I pretty much know I'll be working at least one holiday party, helping with the Sock Hop, and with the spaghetti dinner. I will probably also be called up on for working at least one night of concession stand sales, making food for teacher appreciation, working at least one shift of book fair, working with robotics, choir and theatre.

Aside from that, my main volunteer effort is North Texas Irish Festival. I spend the 2 full days before the festival opens working with Decorations, doing all the touch-up painting on most of the festival decorations. (This is a festival with 3 buildings, 10 stages going for 3 days, and over 70,000 people coming through.)

Not only do I work decorations for 2 days, I'm also a manager of the children's area. The festival isn't until the first weekend in March, and I'm already working on craft ideas for the kids to do, along with trying to get donations for a raffle and sponsorship for our area of the festival. Since our co-ordinator of the kids area had a baby last week, and another one of our managers is getting ready to go on a 4 month internship, the rest of us will have more to do this year. Our area has 1 co-ordinator, 4 managers, and 4 junior managers (2 of which are my daughters). We all have stuff we have to do throughout the year, aside from basically working an entire 3 day weekend. Last year for the festival itself I did 40 hours of volunteering in a 4 day period.

And all this as a single mom of 3 that works full time.

Penny

Though I am a newbie to Spark I am not a newbie to Volunteering, I started helping with fundraising for various organizations as a child with friends or organizations I belonged to. When I had my children my volunteering was more focused on youth, school, sunday school, guiding, scouting, sports ect. As my children are young adults now my focus has changed I now run the local Meals on Wheels program, I volunteer with the Acquired Brain Injury program, at the local Theater as well as a variety of on occassion associations.

I live in a great place where volunteering is very active, from the very young to the aged. As a parent who participated I love the fact that all my kids are givers as well.

Hi all! I am new to this group but not to volunteering. For many years I volunteered in the school system helping children w/remedial work & in the school library. Now that my children are in high school I have started to volunteer for an awesome veterans support group called Sand Soldiers of America. They help to get resources and aid to our younger veterans who are coming home. It is an awesome group & I love being able to give back to our country! My family & I also volunteer at our church. It always makes your challenges seem smaller when you are focusing on helping others. Cindy

Hi
I am a newbie to the team, but not to volunteering, I am a retired nurse, and I have been a volunteer with palliative care for the last 7 years, I visit and give support to people who have life threatening illnesses, and I spend a lot of time with the dying, I also give bereavement support. This is sometimes a very emotional task, which makes weight control difficult.
I hope to get to know you all in the posts.

I volunteer as a sunday school teacher, help at local food sites, take part in trash bashes and occasional walks. I believe you recieve more by giving and are not locked in to a particular group of folks when you give to all in need. I have been volunteering over 10 years.

Hi, I am new to SP and this group. For the last 5 yrs I have been volunteering for the PTA at my sons school. I am the head chair person for the Campbells and Box Tops committee. I use to love doing the committee because I was doing it with one of my closest friends. However, in the last few yrs she had stopped volunteering and I have gone back to work. There forth, I feel like I have been not trying my hardest to make this committee the best I can for the school and the kids. If I canít get my act together in the next few months I think this will be my last yr.

~Hope you have a magical day!~

What a good thing to teach and show your kids at an early age about giving back to your community! Especially in these hard, economic times, it really is important to think about others who are not doing too well.
With your kind of motivation and commitment, you should be well on your way to losing the weight you desire! emoticon

Hi everyone! I am new to this group, and finally getting back on track with SparkPeople!

My husband and I volunteer as small group leaders for the Kindergarten and 1st grade boys and girls at our church. Our family helps to cook and serve meals at a local men's shelter once every 6 weeks. I volunteer on the PTA board at my daughter's elementary school and also as the room mom in her class. I have volunteered for the past few years for the consignment sale for my son's preschool.

Our family believes very strongly in giving back to our community. I definitely feel that we always get back so much more in return than what we actually give out.

You do a lot! Sometimes we do so much that we don't have the quality time to spend with our family or have enough time for ourselves. Good that you will be scaling back a bit to make more time for your family.

I have been volunteering at my kids' school for the past 6 years. For 2 years, I was the PTA secretary, then I was the PTA president for 2 years, and now I am the president of all the PTA presidents in our town. I am also the president of the local youth basketball league. I help out with various school district events. For example, this year, I am chairing the local crab feed to benefit the school district and last year I was on the committee to pass a parcel tax in our town.

I have decided that as of next month, I am going to cut back on some of these activities, for personal reasons, and also so I can spend more time taking care of me and my husband (that means, making healthier meals and taking time to exercise). Between a full time job, 4 kids, various activities for the kids, and my volunteering, things can get crazy hectic!

I volunteer weekly at Seton Hospital in the E.R and Triage. I also occasionally volunteer at the local animal shelter. What I really want to do is volunteer at some of the homeless shelters...it's just hard to fit into my schedule :/

Together with my husband we volunteer for some animal rescues as foster parents, running adoption/outreach booth that sort of thing. Our most recent activity was with a rescue that helps homeless people who either have dogs, or take care of homeless dogs. We spent the morning setting up clothes and toys, while others set up vaccine booths for the dogs and cooked food.

We also have a team every year for Komen's Race for the Cure (we're the Pink Paw Prints). We've been doing it for 6 years but this year was the first time our team was large enough to be considered a team - it was really exciting! We had shirts and everything!

I'm currently not working, but after the new year will be looking into volunteering with young children with special needs. I was a preschool teacher and have a degree in child development.

I pretty much enter the Inventory and Employee Cafť charges into the computer. I also help people find room numbers or other info they need. On Wednesdays and Fridays I help mom at our small country library. I do everything from answer the phone to cleaning the bathroom and getting the mail. (Which is where we are going today.) I have helped out with the 4 yr olds at church. However, the director wants me to focus on finding a job. I think Emily is sweet, but I can do both its just on Sunday mornings. I hope you are all doing well. Have a good day! Holly emoticon emoticon

Empty Bowls is an international project to fight hunger. The basic idea for Empty Bowls is simple. Participants create ceramic bowls, then serve a simple meal of soup and bread. Guests choose a bowl to use that day and to keep as a reminder that there are always empty bowls in the world. In exchange for the meal and the bowl, guests give a suggested minimum donation of ten dollars. The meal's sponsors and/or guests choose a hunger-fighting organization to receive the money collected.

We have the Empty Bowls Program here in town but I have not volunteered there. I remember our kids made some bowls in Sunday School for the Empty Bowls Program years ago~still have them. I think it is good to give back to the community as much as you can and volunteering is a great way to do it!!

I love that there is a group for volunteers!! YAY!

In my spare time I do as MUCH as I can. I am on the committee for our local Empty Bowls program. I often do charitable work for the United Way, in fact I have a fundraiser to work on Friday =) I am involved with Hands on Nashville & Clarksville. I do all kinds of things. We have a program called Clarksville Volunteers that send out e-mails when volunteers are needed and I do as many as I can! It's so nice to give back! I'm a very blessed person and often feel like I just can't give enough.

Last June I said I was going to be co~chairing in the operation of the church pantry but found out I AM the person running it! I do the shopping and making up of grocery bags for those who need a little extra help during this terrible economy. I have to decide just how much time I want to put into this mission since I am also involved in other areas at church. HELP!!!

Oh yeah, The Aktion club is currently making 115 dolls to be sent to Haiti for the Children there. Plus I am taking them (5) to the pool 2 times a week. I love it because I truly helping them while helping myself. They can't be let down by me not showing up and I am forced to swim this way. I wish summer was everyday. Go for a swim today! Did you know...Treading water for 1.5 hours burns over 1800 calories?

I am excited about co-chairing the church pantry with another lady at our church! I love to shop for good deals, no matter what the item and keeping a pantry and making bags of groceries to give to those who are going through tough time financially tugs at my heart so I volunteered since the couple that was doing were stepping down. We go for orientation next Wednesday and afterwards probably have to do some cleaning up and making a grocery list! This will be another rewarding experience for me!

I am a Hospice volunteer. I mainly visit patients that are in nursing facilities, but occasionally I get a patient that still lives at home. Because I am at the nursing facility so often I have also made friends with the non-hospice patients as well.

Presently I assist a visually impaired woman with her mail, banking, shopping, etc. She is presently dealing with the fall out from a messy divorce, helping her with this can be challening.
I also volunteer at a hospital for folks with addiction problems; weekly I work in the free clothing store; folks can get things they need; this is an eye opener.
I'll be making and delivering 'binkies' for the Binkie Patrol, that's a new endeavor for me.
This is all managable as I am retired.. emoticon

Hi,

I'm new to the team, and new to 2010. I have always done some random volunteer work wherever I can due to time constraints. Tomorrow though I think I will be calling a hospital to set up something more regular as I have more time on my hands.

Hi Everyone!
Im new to the team!
Im the VP of a Non Profit Youth Organization in Buena Park, CA. My husband and I run a youth football league for kids ages 5-14! Strictly volunteer. I love it!
It takes up alot of our time, but its so rewarding.

Great idea to do during commercials! Don't even look at them and get some work done and a little exercise instead of watching those commercials that make you want to eat, especially late at night!

7REBACCA7~That is really great on the weight reduction! Also, leading such a large group of people in a very common problem in our times of too much sugar and food addiction. I sometimes dislike watching TV at night because they show so many food commercials, thus giving me ideas of how tasty it would be to have an extra bite to eat at the end of the day!

You have made good use of your time and talents! Just because you can't get out and about, doesn't mean you can't be a productive member of society and you have shown that by all the volunteering you do. Hope you figure out how to set up a blog and maybe you can put some pictures of your handiworks on it! Keep on going~you sound so motivated!

I volunteer for two online groups. I have so much weight to lose and I have a bad back and knees, so being out and around wasn't an option. The groups I volunteer for are Heavenly Angels in Need (H.A.I.N.) (I'm the Virginia State rep) and Ships Support. HAIN does just about everything (crocheting, knitting, painting, woodworking...) for children and families in need. We donate to hospitals and pregnancy centers, homeless shelters, really anyplace that has a need that we can fill. I do crocheting, knitting, sewing, and I make memory boxes. I'll put some stuff on my blog if I can figure out how to set up a blog. I've never done one before. Ship Support does "hugs from home" for the troops. I do crocheted hats, helmet liners, slippers and sewn cool-ties. I'm getting set up to work on a batch of cool ties now. I'll let you know if I get this blog thing figured out. Have a wonderful day.

I'm a new member and while looking over some past posts, I noticed a few comments about donating clothes to Goodwill. I give all my clothing to Goodwill. Yes, they are sold rather than given away, however, the money that Goodwill raises from these sales provides a lot of services that are unavailable elsewhere. For example, I used to teach high school students with disabilities and Goodwill hired many of them to work in their distribution centers, offices, etc. Without the money raised by sales, these post high schoolers would have a very difficult or impossible job search. The items they sell have low prices. So please look into these organizations and see how their profits are used to make decisions on donations. I think there is a need for items that are free and a need for items that are low cost that help others with the money raised. I don't mean this as a criticism of anyone's decision. We all want to help and that's a good thing.

I really enjoy volunteering at my children's schools. I am currently the Home & School Club President (like a PTA) for the last 3 years. I am now embarking on a new venture with our corporate business partner to bring the Relay for Life to Cambrian Park, CA. I am the Event Co-Chair. This is a huge event with a lot of wonderful volunteers from our school district, our business partner, neighboring school districts in the Cambrian area. We are in the beginning stages of pulling this event together. What a wonderful way to get fit and help raise money for the American Cancer Society. At our next HSC meeting I will be proposing we implement a student and parent walking group (Mileage Club) to get ready for the Relay.

Libby... where in NC are you???? I was from Jacksonville and I do know of something there that you can definitely help with. Please let me know asap.

I would also like to ask you something. I have tried contacting Big Brothers/Big Sisters here in the Youngstown area of Ohio. No one ever contacting me back. Can you find out from your local office what I can do to contact them. I would like to get a Big Sister for my daughter as she is an only child, her dad works out of town, and I can't do nearly as much as I use to due to my failing kidneys and awaiting a transplant. Any help you could give me would be very much appreciated.

Good for you for volunteering for Big Brothers/Big Sisters! Next year you might want to walk for the CROP WALK. Our church along with other churches and neighbors in the community walk together to take a stand against hunger in our world. We get pledges for the walk and it goes to this cause. Also, let us not forget the March of Dimes or the walk for Multiple Sclerosis. I think most of these have already taken place and you will have to wait until springtime for them to start again. Keep up the spirit of helping others!

I am a proud Big Sister. I do Big Brothers Big Sisters! I love it. I love helping others. I do have a question does anyone know of a marathon or fund raiser I can help with or be involved in? I live in North Carolina and would love to get more involved.

I volunteer with the Girl Guides of Canada with a unit of Guides (ages 9-11). We make crafts, go camping, learn life skills. It's a lot of fun!

What a great way to help out those someday adult wannabees! They may not know that now but they will surely thank you for it when they get a little older. They will realize that they have to be able to read and write to use the computer and what child doesn't use a computer nowadays?
I hope you find another school or avenue of teaching to some lucky students when you finally make that move.

My volunteering goes on a slightly different bend. In 2006, I "discovered" the Janesville Literacy Council. It is an awesome organization that trains people to tutor adults with reading and/or comprehention difficulties. I always wanted to be a teacher and I was proud to be thought of as such by my students. Sadly, 7 months ago, I had to leave my most diligent and move to Cambridge. And I founnd another job tutoring. But it wasn't adults this time. It isn't even adult wannabees. (high schoolers). I tutor third and fourth graders at the elementary school and it is a Blast! I take what I learned at JLC and cut it down to help these kids who have many of the same problems. Now I am planning another move soon and hopefully the school there can use me. I'll stick with elementary. emoticon

Janet,
That is truly wonderful. In our little town there are 28 houses forclosed on right now and more pending. It is so sad.

I try to instill sharing with my dd all the time and show her that giving is definitely better than receiving. Even with all the forclosures in our area, there are still some very stuck-up children and their parents who just don't care about anyone else in our town.

Very dear friends of ours just happen to be one of those families who just lost their home. They don't want to go to their family on Thanksgiving Day because they are embarressed by losing everything. They have always been the ones to have the huge family dinners and all. So I got them hooked up with my landlord as we rent, she just happened to have a house open and let them move in with splitting up their security deposit and taking some off for cleaning the house themselves as she ahd just finished remodelling it. This year they are coming to our house for dinner because I know they cannot afford to make it themselves. We also went out and bought their daughter some new clothes for Christmas, they don't know that yet and I hope they will understand. It's not to embarress them, I just know what they are going through and right now a house over their heads is much more important.

Anyhow, I really think it's wonderful what the church does with the gifts. I wish more churches were like that. Many though just help those in their church.

What a nice thing for that Pizza Hut to do and also the other restaurant in letting that elderly gentleman eat and then he would clean up the parking lot of any trash. I wish more places of business would do that~I'm sure there is an abundance of food and it gets thrown away daily. I noticed at the shelter where they feed people that they even waste a lot of the food that is prepared for them. If they only knew how many people in this world go hungry every day they would eat every bite of that free food!
We don't have any barbecues that I know of in town but we do have a coat drive every Christmas. People all over town are encouraged to bring coats in to give to the homeless. The part of town I live in I would never think of their being so many homeless people! I'm not saying we are rich but these homeless people tend to be in the downtown section of the larger city next to us.
Our church has a Christmas giving tree where anyone in the congregation can wrap a gift of socks, gloves, scarves and hats and anything else that someone living on the streets could use. The thrift shop at the church donates some coats, too. It's fun to wrap up the presents and know that someone who really needs those warm gloves will really appreciate getting them!
I have a friend who had a stroke last year~same age as me! Her husband has been unemployed for 4 months now and no job in sight yet. People have been leaving gift cards to grocery stores on their doorstep instead of taking them food or prepared meals. This way they can buy the things they like to eat or other items they may need.
I think we are truly blessed to have a full tummy and a roof over our heads and enough money to pay the bills each and every day but the greatest of all is to share our wealth with others!

It sure is Janet. Another thing we use to do when we lived in NC and volunteered with our local vol fire department is the onth prior to Christmas is take up a collection amongst the fire fighters and find out the family in most need in our area. We would find out childrens sizes and what games they liked and we would buy as much as we possibly could and get mom and dad something too. Then we took up a collection of food from within the dept members and take everything over, plus a turkey from the dept itself. We did it as a secret santa though so no one knew where it came from or get embarressed.

We also did 2 yearly barbeques one in fall and one in spring. Whatever food we had left we took to the 2nd chance women's shelter. The different shelter's like that are always in need of food, clothing, or personal hygene stuff.

There was no sacrifice on my part. I knew there would be food when I got home. These 2 gentlemen wouldn't go to a shelter because they said they didn't want to take a spot when a woman and child may have needed it. I only wish I could have done more for them.

There was a Pizza Hut back in NC where wwe lived that somewhat did the same thing. An elderly gentleman came in every day and they would give him the buffet and a drink. He cleaned up the parking lot of any trash there was everyday for them. Then he would go to another restaurant down the street at dinner time and they would do the same. Needless to say we ate at those 2 places usually when we went out even though they had terrible food. Why? Because of the good they were doing for the man. They didn't have to do that but they couldn't hire him (I don't know why) but... just because.

How very nice of you to do that for those homeless men and very self sacrificing of you! I usually try to give my clothes to my friends or people I know who could use them, then I donate them to our church thrift shop. We sell clothes there at better prices than Goodwill but we are only open 2 days out of the month and we only have a small building so we can't take large items.
Another thing I do through the church is call, visit or send cards to people who are sick or in a retirement home and no longer drive and love to have company. The group meets once a month to give reports on the people and what special needs they might have. It's so easy to pick up the phone and give someone a call to brighten their day!

There is one thing I do to help the less fortunate, not exactly volunteering, but all in the same. When I clean out our clothes, I give them to a family I know in need. I go through the local church or even my dd's school to find the family usually. I refuse to give the stuff to the goodwill or salvation army who turns around and sells the stuff. Yes I know people in need buy the stuff for much less than in stores but if I can give it to someone who needs it then that's what I would rather do.

I also use to work at Wendy's when I was much younger. We had a couple of homeless gentlemen that would always come in just get coffe and to warm up. I never told my bosses or anyone else for that matter, but instead of eating my free meal each day I worked, I would sneak and make 2 of everything and give it to the gentlemen. At least I knew they had eated one good meal those days I worked.

That's great SANDYM11! Our church has a pantry that we keep stocked and people will come to the church in need of food. The youth group at our church helps out at a homeless shelter once a month. We usually help in making lunch and brown paper bag dinners since the shelter is not open to serve hot dinners. Hugs to all!
