Sketch Nations Shooter turns paper doodles into digital shooters

Draw a picture, take a photo, and blow it up - all on your iPhone

Remember drawing tanks and ninjas and ninjas with rocket launchers riding on tanks made of dinosaurs, and then pitting them against each other with dotted lines and scribble explosions? Oh childhood. Well, if you have an iPhone and 99 cents, you can now play the same game the "adult" way - by using expensive technology.

Sketch Nations Shooter, released on the AppStore yesterday, allows players to photograph drawings with the iPhone (or import them from the iPod Touch's photo library), and build top-down shooters out of them. The game's photo processing automatically draws collision boundaries.

We don't know if it's any good, but it's a mighty cool idea, and it might be worth the 99 cents just to draw a penis that shoots sperm-bullets at Glenn Beck's face (note that creations can be shared with other players!). Hey, it's one way to get around Apple's adult content policy.

28-year-old Asteroids record finally bested

Three days, 41,338,740 points, and no sense of self preservation

John McAllister started a game of Asteroids on Saturday. He finished playing yesterday with a score of 41,338,740, just eclipsing Scott Safran's 1982 record of 41,336,440. McAllister just beat the longest-standing record in videogame history.

McAllister was only able to take breaks when he'd racked up enough extra lives to safely walk away from the machine for a few minutes. There were close calls - a bathroom break last night left him only two remaining ships, nearly costing him the record. He persevered, and with remarkable determination, he defeated sleep, carpal tunnel syndrome, and common sense.

McAllister's record won't be official until it is verified by TwinGalaxies (go watch King of Kong for an idea of what that's like), but his achievement was streamed over Justin.tv, and the machine seems legit.
McAllister holds several other records on TwinGalaxies, but none as impressive as this.

Congratulations John!

Though the Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved 2 leaderboards have all rocketed to unsurpassable heights since its release in summer 2008, Xbox Live Gold subscribers shouldn't be afraid of picking it up this week for the temporarily reduced price of 400 ($5). We mean, you should be afraid of its propensity for stealing your evenings away from you as you desperately attempt to unlock that pesky "Wax Off" Achievement. But hey, at least those attempts are pretty fun! (Or, at least, the first hundred are.)

NASA discovers Pac-Man on Saturn moon

A heat map of Mimas reveals "a sharply defined Pac-Man shape"

NASA's Cassini Spacecraft recently captured a temperature map of Mimas, one of Saturn's moons, as part of the globally-supported Cassini-Huygens mission. Massively interesting as that is, we wouldn't be writing about the accomplishment if the image reflected the expected "smoothly varying temperatures." It doesn't. Instead, NASA's astronomy geeks got a chance to reference both Pac-Man and Star Wars in one post, an opportunity we imagine they relished. But it really does look like Pac-Man:

Of course, the amusing reference isn't actually the discovery - according to NASA's post, "scientists were completely baffled by the Pac-Man shape." It's a for reals scientific mystery, and Pac-Man just happens to be the best descriptor for the anomaly. Either that, or we should all hope that Mimas has enough power pellets to save us when the space ghosts come.

January Sales: Wii and Wii Fit Set Records, Industry Grows
by Game Informer Online
POSTED: 2/13/2009 3:11 PM

According to the NPD Group sales data for January 2009, Nintendo set software and hardware sales records for the month while revenue rose 13 percent for the video game industry as a whole.

Wii Fit sold 770,000 units in January, setting a record for software sales in the month. The title sold 300,000 more units than second place Wii Play. Mario Kart Wii ranked third with just under 300,000, and Electronic Arts’ Left 4 Dead on Xbox 360 topped all non-Nintendo games at the number four slot.

Wii sold 679,200 units in January, setting a record for software sales in the month. Nintendo DS and Xbox 360 ranked two and three with 500,000 and 300,000 units, respectively.

NPD analyst Anita Frazier notes the continued success of games released months ago and tells how this data implies new consumers are still discovering the industry. "Only two of the top 10 games this month were new releases," said Frazier. "The continued strength of games that have been in the market for some time clues us in to just how many new consumers are coming into the industry. This broadening of the audience for gaming will help buoy the industry through these tough economic times, provided they have enough compelling content to keep them interested."

New Documents Show That Microsoft Knew About Disc-Scratching Issues Before Launch
Posted by Raymond Padilla - Monday, December 15, 2008 4:46 PM
Remember all those disc-scratching issues early Xbox 360s were known for? It turns out that Microsoft was aware of the problem from the start...and did absolutely nothing to rectify the situation. According to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer's Joseph Tartakoff:

"A document unsealed in a lawsuit last week suggests that Microsoft employees knew before putting the Xbox 360 on the market in November 2005 that the video game console could damage game discs."

The document quotes a Microsoft employee as being aware of the problem in September or October 2005. As you know, the system launched in November 2005. This is just bad, bad news for the company, both in terms of the pending class action suit and its image. The whole situation makes the company look...uhm...Richard-ish.

You Had Me at 'Halo': Couple Meets Over 'Halo,' Set to Marry"
Posted by Sinden Lee - Monday, December 15, 2008 3:23 PM
Today, we reported on a very sad, tragic story about a teenager in Ohio who allegedly murdered his mom and shot his dad -- and the fiasco is being blamed on Halo 3..

Well I'm going to give you a happy Halo story.

Boy lives in Florida. Girl lives in New York. She befriends his roommate as Xbox friends. They start playing games, but dude is a no-show one day, so girl messaged her phone number.

John Henry and Desirai Labrada have been playing Halo as teammates since 2004 and now they're set to tie the Halo-themed knots at this year's Otronicon gaming convention in Florida.
