Hey Sarah, I love Minneapolis! Personally, there isn't anything I don't love about it. We have an awesome assortment of entertainment, parks, etc. If you are into biking, we are one of the top bike-friendly cities in the U.S. with tons of trails and bike lanes. We have low unemployment, in 2011 Minneapolis topped the list of best cities to find a job. We have a good mix of big and small businesses. If you are a parent, I know several sources, including Parenting magazine, have rated Minneapolis/St. Paul as being in the top ten best cities for raising families for several years in a row (based on the quality of schools, affordable homes, low crime rates, jobs, and parkland). I guess a lot of people complain about the weather/snow. But, if you are from Wisconsin, I don't think it would really be that much different. At least where I live, everything is always plowed in a timely manner. I hope this helps, and sorry for the delayed response!

Hi everyone! I am not officially a Minneapolis Sparker. We are thinking about moving here soon though. What do you like and dislike about Minneapolis? Is it a good place to live?

I've been continuing my gym streak as well. My baby steps for the last few days have been getting to bed early again. It's amazing the difference just a little extra sleep can make when you need it.

I think my cold is finally in its last stages. I feel about 90% right now. It went pretty quick (1 week) and was not too horrible, in comparison to some of the colds I've been hearing about. My baby step today was running at the gym. I really enjoy it, but my body and feet don't. So, normally I walk and bike/spin. Anyway, today I ran for a bit. I have trouble with moderation and like to either walk or run fast. When I run slow (jog), it just feels like I'm holding myself back and it's almost more tiring. Maybe someday I'll figure it out.

My baby step for today (well, last night and today), was going to bed early. I'm normally a night owl, but since I've been sick with a cold for the last few days, I thought it would be best to just go to bed early rather than watch TV or poke around on the Internet. I'd say it helped a little. I might need to try it again when I'm feeling normal.

My baby step for the day was continuing my exercise streak at the gym. I was sooo tired after work, but packed up and went anyway, determined to put in at least 15 minutes on the spinning bike. Of course, once I got there I ended up feeling good and did 35 minutes.

This may seem strange but making a nice dinner was my baby step, as I was taking it easier today after walking all afternoon yesterday at the home and garden show---my legs and feet were a bit sore today, along with my hips. Too much walking on cement does that to me-ugh.

I took 2179 baby steps today, literally! I did the Stair Climber, Stair Mill or whatever you call that machine at the gym that is like a mini-escalator-in-reverse. I climbed 2179 total steps or 136 floors! It was a great workout!

Does anyone else have a Baby Step to share?

My baby step today was going back to my old "Silver Sneakers" class. I haven't been attending class since last May when I was told I had a large cancer in my left breast. I had that removed and was told that I am cancer free at the present time. Then I fell & had a cast on my left hand & arm after surgery to pin a double break on my hand. Neither operation was much fun! I joined SP in November and the inspiration I've gotten in the interim got my mind on exercise as well as recording all I put in my mouth. I've toned up some and my clothes fit better. This site is wonderful! God Bless the architect of SparkPeople!

Well done Francine! I don't like this super cold weather, but I think getting out of the house every day is important. For me, working at home makes this challenging since it can be very tempting to just stay inside some days.

My baby step was that I had a backslide today with potato chips and dip, but I stopped myself before I ate the whole bag. Gettiing back up gets a little easier with practice. It's not only the stopping myself before I ate a whole bag of chips, but the fact that I didn't give up and start eating everything in the house. Learn and move on!

I'll get there someday. Fall 7 times, get back up 8....

That's super awesome- way to set an example!

Today I was faced with food choices in a pinch and I made the right one- didn't feel deprived but instead felt empowered by being true to my goals!

My baby step of the day was getting to the gym tonight and going for a short walk/run on the treadmill. Sometimes the baby step is just doing it, even if it's something you do all the time. I go to the gym every day, but as the evening wore on and it got later and later, I questioned, "should I bother going?", "do I need to go?", etc. The fact is I didn't need to go. But, it definitely wouldn't hurt. I started out walking, but then decided to sprint for a bit and then finished up with more walking. On the drive home I felt energized and accomplished. That's the power of the baby step. It doesn't need to be hard, it just needs to be done.

Don't forget to keep taking baby steps over this long holiday weekend!

Last year, I posted a blog with some tips regarding holiday social events. The methods worked well for me: I lost 10 lbs between Thanksgiving and the end of the 2011 at a rate of about 2 lbs a week. Here's the link, if you want some last minute tips:

Awesome choices!!!

Today, my best decision was probably walking out of the grocery store (which I had visited for the sole purpose of procuring candy or some sort of treat); then I went to the gym and put in 40 minutes on the spinning cycle.

My (not so) baby step was choosing to go running instead of picking up Indian food. That is HUGE in my world!

"Our running shoes are really erasers. Every step erases a memory of a past failure. Every mile brings us closer to a clean slate. Each footstrike rubs away a word, a look, or an event, which led us to believe that success is beyond our grasp."

Great baby steps, thanks for sharing!!!
emoticon emoticon

My baby step today was swimming and using the hot tub and sauna at the gym this afternoon. This was more of a mental baby step than a physical one. Yes, I'm probably in the best shape of my life. Yes, I was in better shape than anyone else in those areas of the gym today (although, that wasn't guaranteed going into the situation). But, I have some excess/loose skin after losing so much weight and I've never been that comfortable with my shirt off. So, going into the situation, I was very anxious. For now, I need to remind myself that I didn't put on all of my weight overnight and that it's going to take some time for both my skin and spirit to catch up to my weight loss. Anyhow, it was a good experience and I will definitely use the pool and sauna again.

My tracking went pretty good. I did 4 out of 5 days. My next baby step is to do some exercise on the weekends especially saturdays. I tend to be a slug on the weekends.

Baby step of the day: I've stopped wearing dress-shoes at/to work so I can walk more comfortably through the halls, and up the stairs. And; I walk to and from work (about .4 miles each way) so that covers at least 10 minutes of exercise (on days when I work, which only happens twice a week) but still; baby steps!.

Awesome x 2! I think food/nutrition tracking is the key element in weight loss for most people. And, putting candy back is never any fun and takes a lot of willpower, but you never regret putting it back the following day.

My baby step was to buy a smaller notebook that fits in my purse. Now I can write down my food as I eat it and get back to keeping track of my food. My other baby step was I did not buy any candy when I bought my notebook. I even had it in my hand for a minute but I put it back down. Yeah for me!!! LOL!!!

Baby Step of the Day: Got my drink on (and by drink, I mean water)!
emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

I use the SparkPeople Water Tracker to keep tabs on my water consumption. Once you get your 8 cups in for the day, you get 5 shiny SparkPoints. Plus, you're more likely to feel fuller, avoid higher-calorie drinks and stay hydrated. I usually try to get my first eight cups in before I'm done with work. Do you track your water?

First, my baby step of the day was getting to the gym again today (I've been there every day since signing up). Today was the first time I've exercised BEFORE work in recent memory. It's really different than what I'm used to (I don't like waking up early), but I feel pretty good now and it's nice knowing that my exercise is already done for the day. WooHoo! Plus, the gym was super empty compared to any of the other times I've been there, so far.

Regarding the membership, I can go to any LA Fitness in the state. I think they have different options, but my plan/promotion was for the "premier - single state." After talking to my rep, it sounds like anyone can get the same promotion that I got via a "VIP" code from me. So, if you want that $249 initiation, $19.99/month, just message me your name (first name is fine) and I'll e-mail my rep for another code.

Like I mentioned in my post below, HealthPartners (and I think other insurance companies) usually will reimburse $20/month if you register for reimbursement and go 12 times per month. So, that makes the monthly basically free before sales tax. And, in your head, you can slowly whittle down that initiation fee by dividing it over how many months you're a member. I love saving money, so that concept is very motivating to me! After monthly reimbursement and before tax, I figure 6 months would be $41.50/mo, versus $20.75 for 12 months and $13.83 for 18 (two winter's worth). It would actually just keep getting less, and even at the high end it was more affordable than most of the other options I checked into. You do need to pay the first and last month down with the initiation, but those months would still be reimbursed by health insurance once you complete them.

@MBEEKMAN81, I sent you my first code since you specifically asked about it.

If you don't want to do the big initiation fee, anyone can also join via a special on LA's web site that is $0 initiation and $39.99/month (still a good deal).

Hope this helps, sorry it was long!

I had no idea LA Firness was so affordable. I live in SW Minneapolis and might have to check it out. I joined the YMCA, but it is $40/month even after the insurance discount. Do you know if you can do to any LA Fitness, or can you only go to the Richfield one if that is where you sign up?

Looks like my Saturday baby step turned into a leap on Sunday! Yesterday, I joined LA Fitness. When I weighed all of the options, it seemed like the best choice for me (it's so close to my house and now I won't need to replace my treadmill that I wore out last winter).

I paid a $249 initiation fee, but from now on it will basically be free, as long I get my butt there at least three times a week. After the initiation fee, the grand opening special was $19.99/mo. My HealthPartners health insurance reimburses $20/month when you go 12 times a month. So, the reimbursement cancels out the monthly fee except for a little bit of sales tax (a dollar and some cents). I worked out there yesterday and it's nice since all of the equipment is brand new. I'm going there again today after work to try out some other machines.

Today, my partner and I checked out the new L.A. Fitness that opened a day or two ago in Richfield. Seemed nice and was just under a 5 minute drive. I definitely need to bring my exercise inside over the winter. Just not sure if I want to join a gym or not. I wish it would have had a deeper pool and a track. At least we checked it out.

Way to go, Carla! It's always so tempting to park close, especially when you're in a hurry! But, those extra steps always add up!

Today, I squeezed in 30 minutes of strength training even though I thought I had "absolutely no time." I was planning on an hour after work, but realized during the day that I wouldn't have time this evening. I could have easily just skipped the whole thing, but I thought it through and decided half is better than none at all.

Anyone who has met or made significant progress toward a goal knows that it doesn't happen with one giant leap, but rather through an accumulation of many small baby steps. Foot over foot, we make progress towards a goal and with each successful step we build momentum and confidence to reach our final destination.

Use this thread to share your baby step of day. Maybe it's big; maybe it's small. Share it here to help others along and realize their little step today can amount to something great tomorrow! Feel free to share as much or as little as you like, or post kudos if you have time!
