I went with a friend to the yogurt lab near lake Calhoun the other day, and on a lark we took a walk down to the beach near there. It was around 6pm and not crowded at all. There were some lanes set up, and it was overall a nice looking beach. There were swing sets, and stuff to climb on near by for anyone with kids. There's a free parking lot very close by which is also nice. The water was warm, and there was some, but not a lot of seaweedy stuff right near the edge of the water, nothing terrible or gross. Really enjoyed it.

Osanii thanks for the info! I want to check out all the lakes XD

Awesome! Thanks for the info! I will definitely check out those spots! I'd probably start by just playing around and then work into laps once I got comfortable.

Are you taking about swimming laps/ distance or just playing around? Personally, I like Cedar lake because I can swim across it and I think it is about 1/4 mile across, so it makes a nice .5 mile lap. It may be a little less than that though. There is a triathlon group that swims there and I think they said a lap is 1/3 mile. I also like Lake Harriet's North Beach. They do a few swimming competitions there so I think they try to clear out the seaweed and there are boueys marked for lap swimming. The south beach is very seaweedy. I haven't tried Calhoun. Nokomis is OK too and many people swim laps there.

If you are going through hell, keep going.

This is a great question! Living in Minneapolis, I walk or bike past many of these beaches every week (Nokomis, Harriet and Calhoun). There always seems to be a good number of people at the beaches on those lakes, so I assume they are good to swim at. Although, in the back of my head I'm wondering if there is a lot of seaweed, or if the beach swimming area is nice and clear of plants and fish...

If anyone has the answers, please share!

Lake swimming is a foreign concept to an east coast transplant like myself. But, as the weather is getting hot, I've been thinking it would be nice to try it out. I found a pdf that lists swimming beaches in the Twin Cities area...

And I was wondering if anyone had particular feelings about one lake over another. Where *is* the best place to go swimming? Is there one you'd recommend that's not on the list (perhaps further out, or on the Wisc border)?
