Thia Star, your "overweight" discussion was one of the first I saw and commented on. It was great. When I asked the BMI what my weight should be it changed my age to 9 years old and said my height was not calculating with my age!

If you look on the site, I actually have a goal that I want to be overweight. I thought it was so funny and I tell people that all of the time.

I checked my BMI with my goal weight, and it still says "overweight". By the way, I haven't been my goal weight since I was 11 years old. So, although I will leave this as my goal, I don't think I will ever be "healthy" according to BMI

I did a check today to see what weight i would have to be to be considered healthy, it is 127 pounds. At 140, I was wearing a size 7 and felt great so not sure that i will ever reach the healthy range for BMI.

Hi, I am new to this forum, and was intrigued by this discussion. I, too, am short (very short actually, at 4'5") and if I tried to weigh enough to get into the healthy BMI range (or weight watcher's goal weight, even) I feel I would be ghastly underweight and sick.

Thank you so much for explaining that. the height thing has always been my curse when it comes to BMI and although I rarely weigh, I'm more of a measure girl, it bugs me when I see Obese listed. That's why I started the challenge, I thought that may be a fun way to deal with the anxiety.

Hi Thia_Starr - I work as a dietitian and we use BMI as a guideline only to predict health risk in the entire population; there's no guarantee that being in your "healthy" BMI range will actually make you healthier than at another weight, it's just based on population averages. The BMI curve is derived from the Metropolitan Life insurance tables, which compared people's life insurance claims according to their height and weight and decided that the weights at which people died less were the healthiest ones!

BMI certainly doesn't take into consideration WHAT your weight is, so someone who is bodybuilding and has very little fat but lots of muscle will have a higher BMI but is probably still quite healthy. Same goes for pregnant women: heavy but still healthy!

I know that I am overweight and never try to deny that (much as I would love to), however I also know that I am not obese.

Any info that I have read on BMI, is just use it as one of many tools. You may have a higher muscle percentage compared to fat percentage that may give you a false reading. Probably better to listen to our grandmother's "pinch an inch" rule. If you can pinch an inch of fat, you may be carrying too much weight.

I too am the same height and because of our small body frames, we are suppose to be light. I too get frustrated with the BMI, even my Mii character on the Wii looks fatter than I know I am ..lol..
I am like you, its just a number and inches is more important

Hi all,

I have a question about BMI. I am a very short person, 5' 0" and I am trying to get back into a healthy lifestyle. I weigh myself on the 1st and the 15th of every month, no more. I am not stuck on what the scales say at all as I measure as well and go by the inches I have lost as a more accurate measure.

However, having said that, I hate the fact that the BMI has me listed as Obese. Even when I was at my smallest years ago and wore a size 5-7, it still had me at overweight.

I know that this is all in my head, but I just wondered if anyone else would like to tar and feather the person that invented BMI?

Jae
