Hey Sparkers!

Aw, thank you for committing to pop in until I'm ready to return. It's good to feel the friendship I know is in this team. :)

Things are slowly finding a new normal routine. My eating isn't all that bad, but I'm now paying attention to the amount of food that passes my lips. Cardio is a little spotty, but I'm still working my way back up to 30 minute workouts.

Monday the 19th I'm going back to work. Although there's still a lot to sort through, I'm getting bored at home, and that's not a good sign. And the Don't Wannas were very strong yesterday, so I know staying home much longer isn't helping me.

I found a local church that holds Grief Share workshops every Monday night, and I attended my first one last night. They're all very sympathetic people, and once again, in a social situation, I'm the youngest one there. I'm not very religious, but I do have faith and spirituality, and as I work through the Grief Share program, I'll keep that in mind.

This past weekend, a work crew from the office showed up, and on Remembrance Day, in less than 6 hours, we knocked back 5 weeks worth of winter prep in the yard. I fed them when it was breaktime, and they all seemed to be happy to help. I emailed them all this morning, to let them know how grateful I was for their help. The only really big thing left is to gather firewood for the garage wood stove, and when hunting season is over, my neighbour has offered to go back into the woods and collect some for me from a specific location. The fellow who clear-cut across our road gave me permission to get whatever I wanted in that area for as long as I live here, and he had spoken to the land owner and he agreed as well.

I'm glad to see there's still activity on this team. I really miss seeing updates from everyone.

Spark on!

Jo

Hi friends,

I'm here, extremely busy but here..I take that pledge to check in here daily again. I miss our group. emoticon

So am I busy you bet. Between me and my family, studies and this lovely lifestyle I can't seem to catch a breath most days. I'll tell you, you would never know that I do not have a full time job. I'm busier now then when I working in an office..I love it.

Currently I am training for another race which takes place on Sunday morning. Its called the Lucky 7 Relay. It is a 21k race divided into 3 legs. A team of 3 each takes a leg of 7k. I really can not wait for this.

Then on Monday I will be returning to a classroom on a full time basis. Yaaaaay emoticon I am finally beginning my Health and Wellness training. Super pumped for that. Add that to the Personal training (next exam Dec16) and I'm all set.

My new long term goal as of last week is to get 8hrs of sleep, no more no less. i find that I can manage between 5-6 but that is not healthy, if i get more than 8 then I feel like crap too groggy so 8 will do just fine. Not only does it have to be 8hrs but it has to be a reasonable hour. No more of this heading to bed between 1 and 2 am, or even 12 on most nights..10 or 11 is my new goal...I know I can do it!

So since I have to be accountable to myself I will sign off right now at 10:44 and say goodnight.

I will check in tomorrow.

Miss you JO.

Hi everyone,
I see I'm not the only one that life is getting to. I haven't checked in here for about 2 months! My goals have changed again...now I'm trying to establish the habit of exercising 3-4 times a week. I'm not bothering with counting calories right now. I'm so busy, but I need to focus on one habit. Thankfully my kids love to see me exercise and remind me every day!

Stopped just here and read Jo's blog. Jo, I'm so sorry for your loss. I wish I could hug you right now. God give you strength as you go through this pain.

I just made a resolution to work on one more habit...I'm going to try to check in here every day. Is anyone with me? I want us to be here when Jo's ready to come back to us.

Hi,

I should probably be in bed, but I'm not ready to go to sleep. I'm around. I'll eventually be ok. I have no plans to leave Spark. Or this group. I'm going to need you all very, very soon.

Just a quick note for you Jo.

I passed the online exam but then I still had to do the In-class part. Thats the one that scared me...still have not received my results. I have decided that I am ok with whatever I get. I now I tried my best but if my best wasn't good enough then that just means I try again. No biggie. will keep you all posted for sure...you know that. As for the fitness stuff on my FB yes I did post the links on my wall. But if it is too much to look through just go to Youtube and type in Danny Fitness World. He's got about 6 videos on there. Sure they are cheesy...but they are awesome and he really does know his stuff. I just finished my 2nd session with him yesterday and man oh man am I feeling it today. He does not play. But that's what I love, I love someone that pushes me further than I would push myself. He also told me that, I need to slow down that I am completing 6-7 minute sets. He said that was sick...awesome but that I can take it easy for I burn myself out. So since he is the Pro, I will take his advice. today is my break day. All I did was walk.

Thats it for today, am in the middle of baking a pumpkin pie and making curried-pumpkin soup as well.

Check back as soon as I can

Nate

Hey Gang!

Sorry I haven't been around here much, work has been crazy, and I've been working on not feeling overwhelmed. Monday was horrible, but it got much better after that.

@Nate - I saw your posts on FB, and I am SO proud of you!!! I'm going to look up those posts again, because I thought you posted a link to the youtube video, and I really want to see it!! When do you find out the results of the exam? For some reason, I'm remembering a status that you got passing marks. Tell me that's not wishful thinking. :-D

@Riteebee - thanks for that note! It's more than simply cutting back on the weekends -- I have a lot of emotional eating that happens on days off, weekends or not. And this year, I'm working hard to get past those moments, reshape my thinking and work through whatever reason I might have to eat without a purpose.

Smokes update: I'm down to 5 during the week, 10 is my goal for this coming weekend. I didn't do well at all last weekend, but there was also Likker & friends around, so I'm back to that goal this weekend.

How's everyone doing?

Spark on!

Jo

Hey Hey,

Well exam is now written and I am petrified that I may have failed. It started off ok, but then as I stared writing I started to panic. Not sure why I was so ready. Is there any such thing as being too prepared to the point of overwhelming. Maybe it is all in my head. Won't know until next week when I get the results. But at least I gave it my best shot. Lets hope and pray that I passed. Its all I want. But if not there is always next time.

On another note for those that don't know. I have been approached by a local Trainer to participate in his workout show. Basically he will be filming me as he kicks my ass. He is doing it for Youtube in hopes that it gets picked up by our local tv station. I start filming this Wednesday, totally stoked but scared at the same time. Its the though of having people see me get beat up online. Stay tuned, will let you know when it airs.

Well now that I finally have some down time I am going to spend it rotting my brain with some trashy tv shows.

I have the hardest times on the weekends too. The weeks can be so great and then all falls apart on the weekends.

I read something yesterday that I found really motivating, not really about weekends but just about the lifestyle in general. Here it is:

Getting overweight isn't that difficult...

How did you gain so much?

It's simple, my friends. Let me walk you through it:

I ate more than maintenance. It's not that hard to gain more than 100 pounds over time.

Think about it: An extra 200 calories a day over the course of a year equals almost 21 pounds gained. Now, eat that extra 200 calories over the course of 6 years without changing habits, and you've gained more than 100 pounds. (for the math: ((200x365)/3,500) x 6 = 125.14)

And 200 calories is easy: a couple slices of bread, a handful of nuts, a small bowl of ice cream, a midnight snack of cheerios and milk, two bananas, a bag of skittles, a Coke....

This is an important realization when it comes to maintenance. Something like 90% of those successful in losing weight gain it back. I don't want to be one of those people, and I know I can't be complacent about it.

The key for me will be continuing to weigh myself. I won't track calories forever, but if I see my weight creep up I will need to go back to counting for awhile to remind myself of what I need to eat to maintain. If an injury gets in the way of workouts, I'll need to adjust what I eat accordingly. Some people don't need to think about it, but obviously I'm not one of those people who can effortlessly maintain her weight.

This isn't overwhelming to me, thankfully, and it doesn't discourage me; it's just a fact, and I'm glad I've accepted it. I don't need to be obsessed and travel with my food and bathroom scales and compulsively track every morsel that passes my mouth, but I do need to be AWARE. It's a good reminder of what a mere 200 calories a day can amount to. Being healthy is worth making sure my scale has working batteries.

Remember also that the reverse is true. Eat at 200 calories below maintenance, and you'll lose weight at a rate of about 20 pounds a year. It goes both ways :)

Hey East Coasters!

Oh wow.... it's been too long since I've popped in, and schedules being what they are, I'm working in more Spark into my day. Not always successfully, but I'm working it in.

I haven't read any blogs in quite a while, so I'm hoping that I start doing that on the weekends, so I stay in touch.

Speaking of weekends, that was the topic of my status yesterday. Mine have been nothing short of atrocious since July, and I'm still battling summer weight. I'm to the point where I'm not tracking anything on the weekends, and I'm driving myself crazy over this. I'm looking for ways to get past the "day off" attitude, and get back on track. This weekend, I have to start with planning the meals and the snacks, instead of trying to eat intuitively, which is not working at all. Of all the things I need to do to fix this, that's the main one. I can't tell you how many chocolate nutter butter bars I've slathered in 2-3tbsp PB before shoving it between the lips. But to do that, I have to ditch the attitude. Ideas, suggestions and positive criticism welcome. :-D

I'm only looking to get to 160 by the beginning of December, but sitting at 167-173 every week isn't helping.

The smoke-free process is coming along pretty good. I'm taking it week by week to cut down, so I don't stress myself out, and so far, it's working. This week, I'm getting 6cigs/day, and this weekend, the goal is max 10 each day. At this rate, I should be almost done by the end of the month, as long as I can stop smoking on the weekends, too.

Weekends are just plain hard on my healthy living lifestyle. :-P

Spark on!

Jo

Hello Everyone!!

Sorry I've been missing! After my vacation and my 10K run we packed up aand moved (I love the new place!!) Then we unpacked, settled in, school started and things have just been nutty!

The new apartment building has a gym upstairs that I've used a few times (not enough I know). I've managed to get sick twice since we moved August 25th! Two colds in less than a month! I need an immune system boost somehow! Good lord!

I'm running the 5K run for the cure on Sunday! That should be fun! Other than that not much new. I'll try to get better at actually checking in daily :)

Hi Hi,

@Jo, So glad you got some answers. Take care of you, eat those whole grains and keep up with smoke quitting and you will be as good as new.

I probably won't be back on here myself for a bit. Busy birthday weekend for me and since I have been a good girl all week I'm going to enjoy it! My PTS exam is next Sunday as well as the Run for the Cure...on the same day so crunch time is on. I'm pretty sure I'm ready...for both!

Hopefully when Jo and I get back there will be old and new names on here*wink*wink*.

I will try though to pop in at least just to say hi...

I'm going to get this update in before my afternoon starts, otherwise, I'll never get back here today. :-D

Saw the LPN, and she thinks it might be diverticulitis for the lower belly issue, although she's not sure if it's just that or high stomach acids too. I have a Rx for a different acid reducer (Zantac isn't the best one for this), and she's recommending I stay away from popcorn for at least a month, to see if that helps the symptoms. Also got a referral to a dietitian for hypoglycemia. We looked at my sugar levels with the last 3 blood tests I've had, and everything's normal, as in textbook norma. Since I track 80% of the time what I eat (still working on tracking weekend eating beter), it should be easier to figure out how to better manage my eating. One thing the LPN said when I described my foods for the day is that I'm not getting enough whole grains during the day. I already knew that, but after doing low-carb eating for the last 10 years, I need some serious help if I'm going to reintegrate them into my diet, so I'm going to follow up on this one hopefully before the end of the work week, because I want this controlled. There is no way in hell that I'm going to let diabetes take over, especially since I've worked so hard in the last decade to put my sugar levels where they should be.

Work is about to get super-crazy and super-busy for me, starting next week. And that's going to impact how much time I can spend on Spark in the run of a day. I don't like that a whole lot, so I might have to change where I spend my time on Spark, and back down on a few groups and threads... and respond less often to blogs. That last one kills me the most, but I have to learn to manage my time much better than I have been doing.

Smokes on Wed: 7 (YIPPEE!!)

Spark on!

Jo

Yeah, it kinda looks like it's just me & you, Nate, at the moment. We'll have to see about recruiting more newbies, and give pokes in the ribs to the members who are already here. :-D

Popcorn... yeah, I have to get back to the moderation bit, and right now, that's not a food I can control enough to eat in moderation. But just like any other food I've had to learn to control, I'll get through this one too. I might just avoid popcorn altogether until after I quit smoking, which is coming along, albeit slowly.

# Smokes Tuesday: 7

And so far today, it looks like I'll meet that number again. I'm kinda but not really missing the morning break smoke, but the afternoon one is quite strong, so I'll have to be quite innovative in the distractions I choose.

I also go to the doctor tomorrow to talk about hypoglycemia, and a couple other issues I'm having lately. One of them is intestinal bloating, something I've never had before (other than extreme over-indulgence), so I want to get it checked out. My lower belly has been hard for the last few weeks. I chalked it up to getting back into Shred early September, and TOM that started Sunday, but all that should have gone away by now. I did notice my sodium levels on the tracker are climbing again, but it's never caused this kind of problem. I need to spend some alone time and analyse the foods that are causing the sodium problem, and find alternatives.

Oh! And I'm re-certified for First Aid w/ CPR once again. *grin* The office paid for it, which is a HUGE bonus. And I think this year, I'm going to buy several car kits to give away for Christmas.... we all should have one in the car.

I thought about doing the dishes tonight, then My Guy turned me right around while I was making supper, and BAM! he did them all. :-D Now I can go spend some guilt-free time with him this evening. :-D

Spark on!

Jo

Hi all,

Still super busy.

@Jo looks like we are the only ones hovering around here lately...where did everyone else go!

Glad that you are taking the quitting smoking thing one day at a time. I did read your popcorn blog, had a good chuckle. I too love popcorn but have cut my intake down to once a week. So yes go a ahead and indulge...in moderation.

Well I had my bootcamp tonight and it was pretty much a let down. Don't get me wrong it was a good workout but due to the fact that she changed the location without notification I missed almost 15 mins and then based on the location that she chose we could not complete the type of workout that I am accustomed to. I don't know if it because she was trying to accommodate the others that can't do an intense workout but, it was truly lacking. It just left me wanting more. Thank God I do not have any meetings or appts booked for tomorrow so I can get in a great workout after I finish studying.

2 weeks til the Run for the Cure, its only 5k but its better than nothing. Its not a timed event but it is a for a great cause. I will be doing a walk/run because I will have my 2 boys with me. They said they would run to but something tells me I will leave them in my dust so in order for them to keep up with me I will slow it down. That same day is my Personal Trainer exam, it has been a long time coming but I know I will be ready this time. I am kind of bummed that I had to wait this long but at least I got in a lot of studying. A lot more than the rest of my classmates. Although I just found out that one of my classmates just got hired at Goodlife, that is awesome news glad to see that it is just that easy! Look out world here I come!

Okay enough already...I'm going to go rest my head have to get up even earlier than i have been lately because the hubby has to work for 530 which means I am morning duty with the kids....The hubby usually does it... God love him!

Oh well early morning give me a lot more time to get things done around the hose, I think it is supposed to rain so home i shall stay tomorrow.

Nite Nite

Nate

Oh wow... has it been since Friday the last time I popped in here? Man, I gotta work on that! :-D

@Nate - thanks for the support. :-D So far, I'm down one smoke today, and my goal is 7 for the whole day. I haven't set a quit date yet, only because I know me and End Dates do not get along -- I blow right past them. But I might have to give that one another try. Thanks for the tips on spices for taco seasoning, I'll have to try some of those. I also want to try the Epicure version of taco seasoning, and I'm wondering if anyone here has tried them before.

I can finally see the end to one of the projects being a thorn in my side!!! I have another handful of screenshots to take, then the document is ready to be sent off for Translation. Even though I'm bilingual, I'm not a translator, so I'm not allowed to write the document in both languages, even though I could. Since I work more often in English, I'm writing this one in English, and will get the translators to do the French one. My brain isn't that lazy, but I've been scolded in the past for sending out communications to end users without going through Translations. So to save on headaches down the road, I only write up one language now and send it off to come back in French.

And I gotta get away from popcorn... at least most nights. I wrote a blog about it today.

And finally, my home internet is WORKING!!! Turns out it wasn't just the modem that was bad, there was also a hardware piece on the satellite dish that was cracked, and that's what was affecting half the signal strength! So the repair guy was over for nearly 90 minutes, but I'm back to being able to Spark from home. :-D WOO-HOO!

Spark on!

Jo

Just popping in...extremely tired today.

@Jo yes, thats exactly what I would tell you. Plans work better when they are specific. Congrats by the way. Great score! As for the taco seasoning. I use corriander, garlic powder, spanish paprika, parsley and salt and pepper, pinch of sugar, when I want it more spicy I throw in some chayenne. As for the amounts...yes I usually do measure everything but this came about by accident because I too hate the salt in the packaged ones. So just throw stuff together. Doesn't usually turn out the same every time, but I like it that way. Sometimes spicy sometimes not.

K signing off. cant keep my eyes open.

Nate

Hey gang!

About 2pm today, the fog and mist finally lifted, and it's finally a sunny day in Fredericton.

Today is Sneaker Day at the mall where our office is located, and with the help of the Wellness committee and mall merchants, they held an information session and a short cardio walk-about at lunchtime. And since I'm the chairperson on the Fitness Rooms Committee, I got some great ideas on how to increase our numbers to the gym, including WorkPlace Pilates sessions. I also picked up coupons for SFL foods, and a free PT session with someone at Naturally Fit, here in the city. I'm quite interested to hear what she's going to tell me, and I'm debating whether to tell her of my current fitness levels. Nate, you'll probably tell me I should let her know, so she can tailor the session better. Am I right?

I also found a pamphlet on diabetic eating, since I'm quite sure I'm hypoglycemic, and even before I visit the doctor on Thursday, I want to see how far I am from what I should be doing. So far, the biggest change I've made is adding Laughing Cow cheese to my morning fruit - it still feels wrong in my head to have the protein at the same time as the fruit sugar, even though the other part of my brain says it's supposed to be that way. And I picked up a Menu Planner from the Canada Food Guide people. I'm already planning 2 weeks ahead, but this way, I can put it on the fridge and follow the layout of the planner, to see if it makes it easier to meal plan and prepare.

I'm also on the hunt for a recipe so I can make my own taco seasonings. With a few smart swaps, I've turned a soft taco bake casserole into a very healthy meal, except for the horrible sodium content in the packaged seasoning mixes, even the sodium-reduced ones. I use ground chicken/turkey or even Yves Veggie Ground Round Mexican flavoured, add the mix, some sugar- & salt-free tomato sauce, and for a little extra zing, extra old sharp cheddar cheese (McLaren's Imperial). I found it helped to cut the salty flavour in the seasoning mix, mostly. And then I use low-fat cheese (not no fat, it doesn't melt as well), and whole wheat tortillas, and then layer it all like a lasagna. And then I really cheat and cook it in the microwave. *snicker* Baked is much better, the tortillas are a little less rubbery and more crunchy.

Smoking update: Wednesday I had 9, yesterday I had 8. Today's goal is to have 8 total, and so far, I've had 2 1/2 (I went out for break this morning and took about 4 puffs before I put it out). I'm hoping this weekend is reasonably successful, I think I want to set the limit for each weekend day to be no more than 10 smokes, aiming for 8. If I could do that, I would be smoking as little as I do on weekdays. And Monday, the plan is to cut out the morning office break smoke... the one at 9:30am. I might need to change what I do about that time of day, so I'm not tempted to smoke. And then start plastering my cubicle with motivational quotes to quit smoking.

Time to get back to work, this document won't magically format itself. Darn it. :-D

Spark on!

Jo

Hey all.

Well today was a great day. I spent the entire day volunteering for the Maritime Race Weekend. It is a series of runs put on her in our neck of the woods. Through Eastern Passage. You should check out the website. This was another run race that I had wanted to compete in but alas by the time I saved up the money it was already sold out. i really have to start preparing more for these types of things.

I was also supposed to be travelling to the states with my inlaws for the weekend for some shopping but alas the budget is not allowing it. Oh well still have another planned for Black Friday in November.

@Jo I am back on track with the morning schedule. What got messed up was when I was sick. Now that the kids are back in school it is awesome. I am up earlier, not that I wasn't during the summer but now even earlier. Kind of liking it. Have to get used to it now anyway with me going back next month. As for busses no they are still at the same school(lat year together before biog guy goes to Jr. High) and we drive everyday.

Well Big Brother is on my guilty pleasure, Hey we all need a little crazy reality TV now and again and since I don't watch much tv...

Nite Nite.

Hey gang!

Well, summer is definitely over, my fingers are frozen again, even as I type this from my warm office. :-P Someday, I'll have lots of blood that will course hard & strong through my veins. I hope. :-D

@Nate - has your morning routine changed a lot with this school year? do the boys go to different schools or catch different buses? I hope your bloaty feeling goes away soon. Maybe it's just the weather.... all that rain Halifax got might be seeping into your pores. :-P Just kidding.

Yesterday wasn't so good for reducing the # of smokes I have a day - I was up 2 over Monday's count. But I've only had one so far this morning, and I'm delaying the next one by 30 minutes, I've got less than 5 mins to go. The funny part is that I still have patches and gum to get me out of these situations, and still -- STILL -- I'm trying to go cold turkey. I swear, some days I think I'm a masochist. :-D Today's smoke totals is to not exceed 6 for the day.

Oh! and I finally got back to doing Shred yesterday! And both shoulders and both bum-cheeks are really feeling it today. :-D Jillian Michaels, I've missed you.

Have a great day, everyone!

Spark on!

Hi all,

I'm here. good and busy, but still here. Haven't had much of a moment to breath and don't really see me getting much more than I am any time soon.

Kids are off to school and so will I in a few weeks. Lots of preparation to get ready. As well my PTS exam is on the 30th so extremely busy with that.

Feeling rather heavy and bloated today and not sure why. Did not over eat and even got in a quick workout. Its not that time either...hmmm.

Well back to studying just wanted to check in and say hey!

@Jo, giving it another go with the smoking? Good luck and fight that fight. I'm rooting for you!

Have a great nite.

Hey Sparkers!

Well, Mondays being what they are, I'm glad to be back on a normal weekday schedule.

I posted a blog about my long weekend, and I sure wish it didn't have to end. :-D

This past weekend, I didn't do much. And I'm not liking that... the weekend Don't Wanna's have returned, and with the amount of yardwork that needs doing before the snow flies, I can't let that consume me. So I'll be working on that this coming weekend.

And I'm also working on quitting smoking again. If I have an ulcer, smoking really irritates it, and I have noticed that after I have a puff, my stomach is never happy. Well, if ever there was incentive to quit, that's it right there. Starting tonight, there is no smoking in the house. This is where it gets rough, so I'll have to make sure I have enough to do to not want to smoke.

Have a great day, gang!

Spark on!

Jo

Hey Sparkers!

I'm back from vacation. I wish I had more time to finish off the week, but the last few days have been so great, chillin' out and relaxing.

@InSh8p - THANK YOU!!! I just saw your post today, and I'll have to check them out over the weekend. I might be needing those too, soon, especially if my obliques are injured again.

@NelleKe1 - Congrats on the new baby!! And welcome back! Are you using SparkPeople's new mommy site too? I can't remember what it's called, but I've seen it. And it sounds like you've got a healthy boy on your hands, too! :-D

@Nate - Have I told you lately I think you're awesome? :-D Your determination after meningitis hasn't slowed down, and that alone to me is amazing. :-D

As for me, well, I'm happy and sad my vacation is over. Sad, for obvious reasons, work just isn't as much fun. Happy, because I'm back to my regular schedule, and regular foods. I danced both nights, walked a lot during the day, and even did a WATP workout in the open field, when I noticed my thighs felt sore & heavy. But the food was definitely my downfall this weekend. Having said that, I've made a few discoveries:

1) I don't like french fries, regardless of what's on them. That includes gravy & cheese that make up a poutine.

2) I think I might be hypoglycemic. On 2 occasions, I missed my regular piece of fruit, and within an hour, I thought I was having a hot flash (sweating, feeling hot), but when my face didn't get red, my knees felt like jello and a piece of fruit brought me back to life, I knew it wasn't a hot flash. I have an appointment with the doctor on the 20th. Diabetes is almost guaranteed on one side of the family between the ages of 50-55. Lovely. And I thought I would skirt around that disease with all the weight loss and healthy lifestyle habits. It looks like I'm headed in the other direction, now.

3) I think I also have an ulcer. At first, Mom thought it might have been a gallbladder attack, but after paying attention to the timing of the pain compared to when I eat, I'm more likely to believe it's an ulcer. Zantac is helping, but it's not enough, and when I go on the 20th, that will be on the agenda to discuss.

I had a poutine rapee, and that was ok, but I think that was so early in the weekend that I couldn't tell if it was reacting with my stomach and sugar levels. We had a ton of fruit in the car while we were on the grounds, which really helped, because they weren't selling any fresh produce on the grounds. (I emailed them some suggestions for next year, and a fresh produce booth was on the list.)

4) Lobster is really yummy, and worth the cholesterol about once every 6 months, no more. And I can eat the lobster without butter, as long as it's buttery-flavoured Becel. :-D

I'm also working my way through the fruit & veggie list from the Eat Right For Your Blood type book, especially after having a couple charlie horses while away, and that I'm not enjoying the bananas in the store lately. Come to find out my blood type shouldn't be eating bananas, but it was the only fruit I knew of that was high in potassium to help with the muscle cramps. Turns out that apricots are higher in potassium per serving than bananas. Really??? Ooooohhh.... *giggle* And it doesn't matter if they're dried or fresh, the potassium counts are the same. So I bought some dried apricots Tuesday, and 5 whole or 10 halves is one serving. I'm actually having a hard time getting in 5 wholes when I sit to eat them. I like them, but I'm not used to eating them, so they taste a little strange. Figs & dates are also high in potassium, and I might have to suck it up and find a bottle of blackstrap molasses, too. I don't know what I would put it in, because I'm not a big fan of molasses, but I'll find something.

And while on vacation, I didn't track what I ate, but I did track my activities. I was quite pleased to see only 3lbs up on the scales today, especially since I'm feeling very bloated this week, if it is an ulcer I'm sporting.

And *both* hips are still sore from all the dancing this past weekend. *giggle* That pain is SO worth it. Reveil was such an awesome band & show that I couldn't have sat down at all that night if I had wanted to. :-D I'm trying to not take Naproxen or Advil for the pain, since I'm not sure what's going on with my belly, but I might have to take some anyway tonight.

And on that note, I hope everyone who is returning to school has done so, and that there are some smiles still on our kids' faces. :-D

Spark on!

Hi there!
I am back! I just had a brand new baby boy on the 19th of August (my third boy). Since I'm tandem nursing this time, I can't diet or lose weight too quickly. On the plus side, some of the weight will come off fairly effortlessly. I notice that today I'm exactly 30 lb heavier than I was the last time I recorded my weight here in September 2011.
My goals:
1. Track my food every day (more to keep an eye on nutrition than quantity).
2. Do Pilates 3x/week
3. Walk 15 minutes on non-Pilates days.
It doesn't seem like much, but I think I need to feel my way carefully as I figure out how much to eat and exercise while nursing two.

Hey Sparkers!

It's almost 3 am, and I'm about to go to bed, after a really fun-filled day at the Acadian Festival. I danced hard, I ate potato in forms that I can only get here, I walked and people-watched, I had a snooze, and overall, I'm having a great time. If there are any Acadians on the team, last night was Reveil for one dance, and tonight was Danny Boudreau. I'm gonna have sore hips tomorrow, but I don't care. :-D I was invited to get on one of the fishing boats for the parade to the Sunday morning mass, but that would mean getting out of bed in less than 3 hours, and that's just not gonna happen.

I'm off to bed, Mom's laptop just sucked the last of its battery for the night, and this Princess is ready to turn back into a Pumpkin for the night.

Spark on!

Hey Gang,

Hope all is well.

My weekend was great Friday was pretty low key. Made a low-fat coleslaw for a BBQ on Saturday. It must have been ok because it was the first bowl that was emptied. I enjoyed it as a topping on my veggie burger. Speaking of BBQ I did pretty good food wise. Even with the marshmallow peanut butter squares I ate one too many but still managed to stay with the goals that I had set. Also got in a great workout before the BBQ as well. So all was great.

Saturday was actually my Wedding Anniversary. We played the rest of the night low key also. Just what we wanted. Sunday we took the kids to the Wildlife park. It is always a success.

Today was spent in and out of the Drs office and trying to get all of my paperwork done to start school. I am trying to the EI to cover it and they make you jump through hoops. But thats ok. I'll do whatever it is they want. I was supposed to have had a meeting with the Director of the gym that I go to to discuss future possibilities but she had to postpone. All was not lost I got in a great workout.

Tomorrow is a get together with my Sister and her family. It is her last full day in Canada she heads back to Bermuda so super busy tomorrow.

Hope you all had a great weekend.

Nate

@INS8P thanks for taking the lead on the Jo question I have been extremely busy with my new goals since I have jumped back onto my feet. i have been spending a lot of time on outings with the kids as well as my visiting sister and her family as well as setting new goals.

Speaking of new goals wanna hear about them?? Well as you all know I have decided not to return back to my previous employer for serious reasons. Well with that being said I am finally going back to school. Not only do I have my PT exam on Sept 9 but I will be going back to a full time institution on Oct 8. I will be taking Health and Wellness. I am super excited. I just took the plunge called the school and signed the papers. Can't wait. If I am rambling its because I am . I am just so excited. So thats why I have been so busy. With me returning to school in the fall I am trying to spend as much time as I can now with my family because once I hit those books I'm afraid they may be neglected slightly. Hopefully not too much.

So I will be checking in as much as I can. Will most likely not be daily but Ill still be here in spirit. Will be still be tracking (its in my blood now)

Hope you will all have a great weekend if I don't check in.

@Jo - I have some suggestions for the moves you are looking for that get ab / core toning, but not from the floor. Do you remember Chalene Johnson, and her TurboJam routine? Same principles apply to ShaunT's Hip Hop Abs series.

SparkTeam Turbo Jammers - a link (go to the end of the posts) that details what is done:

For both systems, check the website or online video services (don't want to mention specifics on the public post, but can provide details if you need via SparkMail) for the publisher.

Hope that helps...

Hey gang!

Well, I'm back from vacation, and still desperately trying to catch up with my Spark emails. The vacation was GREAT, even though the camping trip was rather wet. My squishy toes were happy to be back home on dry carpet. :-D

Next week is going to be quite chaotic for me, and sporadic for Sparking, since I'm on vacation next Thursday again for a few more days. It's my last big vacation before Christmas.

How is everyone doing?

I saw that some of the NS gang participated in the Navy 10k race, congrats to all of you for doing such a great job! My inner athlete is still asleep, so although I won't be doing any races in the near future, I know how much hard work and training you've done to be able to even survive the races. GREAT JOB!! :-D

Spark on!

it has been a very odd summer, for me have not accomplished what i had set out to do but accomplished setting some new goals so all is not lost.

Stay tuned.

Hey gang!

Short & sweet tonight, got lots to do before leaving for the camping trip.

ONE MORE SLEEP TO VACATION!!! WOO-HOO!!!

And I think I pulled the oblique muscle today. Lovely. Advil & Tylenol are on the menu tonight, and I'm debating on the muscle relaxer. My plans to do a lot of workouts during the vacation seem dashed at the moment, but we'll see how I feel tomorrow. And unless I'm in a lot of pain and need to go to the hospital, I'm not missing this camping trip! Besides, a few campers will be nurses.... I'll be in good hands. :-D

Not sure if I'll be back on Spark to post until early next week -- unless the morning brings a clear internet connection on the mountain. *grins*

Spark on!

Had a great day today.

Had a great walk last night my 1st big one since being up and about. The bad news is that I waited too late to go out though. I had only intended on easing into it. But you know me its all or nothing so once I got out there and tackled those hills there was no stopping me. The only problem was that it was so dark and gloomy with drizzle and fog and then next thing you know its after 9...it was getting a bit anxious because I ended up on a highway that I don't normally like so my speed picked up a lot so I could get home. Then I got real nervous stuck to the lighted side and ran the rest of the way. Trust me I will not be taking that way again that late or alone. Great news is that it turned out to be 10.10k so i'll take that.

Today was my scheduled bootcamp class. I had missed 2 while I was ill so I was a little shaky but I managed to fight through it. I was doing walking lunges with the 25lb kettle bell and nearly fell out of my senses. My legs were just so shaky. I just took it slow and lunged on as well as squatted. That was half way through so once I got past that I was ok. I only have one class left with that session so after that I will be on to something new. Have already contacted the establishment to get a tour of the facility and to inquire on the different sessions. They offer MMA, Grappling, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, tae kwon do, kickboxing, bootcamp (mix of all), this is probably what I will go with. Can't wait.

So I am down 2lbs this week. I had thought I was going to be up because of all of the laying around when I was sick. But I know it helped to have my food under control.

Hope you all had a great weekend.

Hi all,

Having a great day lazing about in the yard with the kiddies. Was going to go out on an outing but with this being a long weekend with lots of activities. There will be lots to see or do.

@Spidergirl6 congrats on your loss. Keep in mind that you ARE doing something or you would not have lost it. You are doing something right. Keep up the great work.

@Jo, I am pondering your request and will let you know what I come up with.

I must say I do feel really good today. Looks like i will be back to the old new me in record time.

Have a great night friends will try to check in during the weekend.

Wow, I am excited today. I weight myself this morning. I was down a pound since last week. I would be even prouder if I would do something to lose it. ;)

Hey Gang!

Oh, the rain has been good lately! Other than I now have a forest to mow down in the back yard, it's good to see green grass & shrubs again.

@Nate - That makes a lot of sense about returning to that employer. At least you and DH made an informed decision, and I'm sure baby girl is appreciating the change. :-D On the PT front, I have a favour that you might like to do for a bunch of us at the office working on Shred. Today, we spent the hour going through the moves in 30-day Shred levels 1 & 2, especially the abs moves, to deconstruct them so they could be done standing or sitting, instead of lying down. We found a couple sites that had seated exercises, but some of the moves Jillian does for abs can't seem to be found, especially the lower abs, "that little pooch you've got that you don't like". Moves like reverse crunches, bicycle crunches, chest flys lying down, double crunches and double crunches with leg extension. Would you like to help us find modifications to those ab moves so the gals don't have to lie on the floor to do them? Don't feel you have to, I know you're still recovering and you will be focusing your energies on that and getting back to normal. But if you're looking for something fun to do, and I know you would find it a good challenge, let me know and we'll chat further about it.

@RiTeeBee - And I thought my August was going to be crazy! Nuh-uh! Not after reading what you'll be up to this month. :-D And when you're in the middle of the Navy 10k Run, and you think your legs won't carry you a little faster, and your inner strength is starting to falter, just remember that I'm in the crowd in spirit, cheering you on, reminding you that you CAN do this at the speed you know you can achieve. I'll be the really loud chick way in the back, holding a pom-pom in one hand, and a noisemaker in the other, urging you on. Ok? :-D

Today has been a good work day, finally. The project manager attended one of the tough meetings this morning, and it helped set the tone for the next meetings I'll be holding, as we sift through the documentation, to make it current. This afternoon's meeting was a lot easier to control, because I knew what was going on, and I knew I was in charge. And Mr. Numb-Nuts who is like the flintspark to my fire was actually very good to me today, and didn't act like a total snot. It might have had something to do with me blowing up at him at the last meeting, because he was cussing a blue streak and I told him to stop then left the room or I was going to hit him. I suspect Mr. Manager had a couple words with him. Mr. Numb-Nuts doesn't respect a lot of people in our office, so I don't understand how he could make it to supervisor role. At least for today, he behaved.

Weight loss didn't happen this week, but I've also noticed the muscles in my thighs, shoulders and back are really tight -- if it weren't for the fat on those body parts, you could ping dimes off those muscles, they're that tight. I'm also reluctant in taking the muscle relaxers, because they make me feel lethargic the next day... like my butt is glued to the floor, not even the chair, and it makes it difficult to get anything done, especially a workout. So next week, I've decided to take it a little easier when doing Shred, since I think that's the workout causing much of the muscle stress lately. And the week after, I'm on vacation, and I plan to do a lot of chillin' out, so the body can recover too.

And on that note, work is now done, Sobeys has a few deals I want to get in on before I head to the cheap grocery store. :-D

Spark on!

Jo

I'm doing ok. I am finally up and about a little bit. Not 100% but enough to keep me moving.

@Jo, since I last posted my husband and I have decided that I will not be returning to my past Employer simply because I did not do so well with the stress and the environment due to lack of workload and low morale. We have decided it is probably best for me to take some time off and get my head back on straight. Especially after being sick. Time to focus my attention on my Personal Trainer Certification. So I have taken baby girl out of daycare, the money we save there will be about the amount I will be losing by being on EI for a bit. I will take some temp jobs here and there, even though I have decided that being tied behind a desk is not where I should be if I need to be, but other than that I will be fine..cant wait to be healthy again...between my 3 kids and my new goals...

@RITEEBEE don't you love being busy? Good luck on the Navy 10k. I know I will not be well enough to run it. Have not trained at all since I have been ill. Hopefully I can use it for next year. Good luck with your move.

OK that's about it for now. Back to spend some time with the kiddies.

I know it will probably be a little slow but I am going to get it done reagardless!

Hey Gang!

Boy, it's easy to tell it's summertime, we're not posting a whole lot on this team. That's ok, I know we'll all be together and posting madly come fall. :-D

@Nate - I'm glad to hear that work called you back. Why would you think it would be a mistake? Are you thinking of the workload or something else? And be sure to let us know if you really have to pay again to take the testing for the PT. This was an extraordinary situation, not just a common cold, so I think you're right to fight it. And how's the head today?

Well, I don't expect to see a loss today on weigh-in, though I'm having a few NSV lately. Yesterday during Shred level 1, I successfully did 2 REAL pushups on the floor! The remaining 16 were halfway down, but I had 2 real ones! And that would explain why my shoulders are sore today. I've already started the anti-inflams, and they make me retain water, so although the numbers won't go down, it's fantastic to know my shoulders are getting stronger.

Yesterday we were 4 in the office gym doing Shred! Holy Cannolli!! Really??? Yeah, really. :-D I've got to spend a little time looking at some seated abs moves before lunch tomorrow, because 2 of the gals have a hard time with the abs moves on the floor, one in particular has very bad vertigo. We're going to deconstruct most of the Shred moves in levels 1 & 2 for our workout tomorrow, so they can continue with me. And today, we've got a new workout office buddy joining us for WATP. She's excited to join us, and a little concerned we might "kick her out" for not performing well. *blink blink* Oh, hunney-bunney, if you choose to stick with us, we will NOT kick you out! :-D

Oooh, look! Rain! I sure hope it rains enough before the camping trip, because I heard there's a ban on outdoor fires in NS right now. It just wouldn't be the same if we couldn't have our annual campfire. So I'm hoping. :-D

Spark on!

Jo

I'm here,

Still not doing the greatest. I still have the headaches and pain behind my eyes as well i have ZERO energy. I'm not a good sick person. Don't like this feeling.

On a good note my work has called and they want me back already. So at least that is something to look forward to when i get better. I pretty much told them that it is out of the question right now and they told me when I was up and ready my desk will be waiting. so that's good. I really hope I am not making a big mistake going back. They told me that they will be keeping me so busy I won't have time to breathe. Not sure if that is a good or bad thing. Oh well right now its still the furthest thing from my mind. have to get better first.

On a not so good note because I am sick I was not able to complete my Personal Trainer exam, that really sucks but at least they told me I can do a rewrite. That kind of sucks that I have to pay to do a a rewrite though. I already paid to do the original and was not able to. Don't see why I have to pay again. I may try and fight it.

Anyway time for a nap.

Will check in when i am able.

Hey Sparkers!

That's alright Charlene, Mondays are made for forgiveness. :-P I'm having a rough go today too.

Nate, I saw that you posted on FB that your headaches are back. I hope they don't last long.... I'm sure you're looking forward to getting back into the swing of things. I'm rootin' for your good health to return!

Well, today is one of those Mondays I really should just have stayed home. Root cause: TOM. *sigh* and I was SO CLOSE to menopause! *big sigh* It's been several months since I've had one, so when my lower back was sore and chocolate looked exceptionally sexy and tasty, I didn't even know what hit me. Yes, chocolate actually had sex appeal yesterday & today. I'm trying to hang in there till the end of the day -- I've got one fruit left before supper, and I'm about to refill the water bottle one more time today. We have some errands to run after work, so just to add salt to that wound, I'm getting supper later than normal today. *bigger sigh* I even forgot my workout clothes at home this morning! Oh, I was mad at that one! Fortunately, Zellers is in the mall, so I bought new pants & top to work out with -- and they're actual workout clothes, too! I wasn't planning on buying any today, but I didn't want to skip the workout. At least it was under $40 for the pair.

I think I need another weekend. :-P Like tomorrow. :-D

I sure hope tomorrow is better than today.

Spark on!

Jo

Happy Monday everybody. Just checking in and catching up on posts. Had another slight lost, which I'm happy with.
Working in a small community summer bakery is tempting but I manage to stay away from the sweet stuff and the homemade bread and rolls. When you are around this type of stuff everyday it can turn you off it. It was the same when I was a cook. It was nothing for me to loose 20 lbs. over the summer cause cooking food all day you soon don't want to be around it at home. I have been staying away from bread because I think part of my stomach problems is due to yeast. The girls like to see what I'm having for lunch each day as I bring my own. Last week I took seaweed salad from the sushi bar. Some like it and some wouldn't even touch it.
Physio is leaving me in pain lately. Sleeping is a real B_tch. For some reason my hip doesn't tend to bother me too much at work. It's when I'm doing working or I'm out and about that the pain really hits. And now it is going from the hip down to my knee.
Tried walking Cavendish beach yesterday with hubby. Couldn't walk on the packed sand but the soft sand was ok.
Off today, so I'm catching up with my house work and laundry, then it's outside to work the flowerbeds and enjoy the sunshine.

Bye and enjoy the lovely weather.

Charlee

Hey Sparkers!

Well, RiTeeBee beat me to it, I was planning to post a little earlier today, but didn't get there. :-D At least there's more than me here today.

Last week's meetings were as bad as I had thought, and one co-worker asked why I had a dark cloud over my head. It really was that bad. The morning meeting left me exhausted emotionally, and I even considered cheering myself up with chocolate. Fortunately, my healthy brain kicked in and said it would be more worth it to do the workout and mean it. So I did. The afternoon meeting was much better, and gave me a chance to sit back and ponder the morning one. I was so angry and frazzled after the first one that it took me 2 days to regain composure. There were 2 highlights to the meetings: 1) I came out of those meetings with a much clearer understanding of the work we still need to do before we can release this software to the masses of provincial government (I had a 3-page report I handed in, and it wasn't asked of me to do it); 2) and this is the best one, I got to tell a supervisor to shut up and let me talk, while HIS manager was in the room. Oh man.... I've been waiting for THAT moment for nearly a year to do this to him! I felt vindicated. :-D

Zellers has Seely Comfort Top mattresses & box springs on a big sale this week (till Thursday), and I bought one today. With the HBC credit card, so I could get double HBC points. Then I handed in a coupon for an extra 35000 points. All today. *grin* With any luck, I'll have enough points saved up by the end of October that I should be able to buy 3-5 Christmas gifts from Zellers. The beds are $1000 off, I needed a twin-size bed, and I paid $450, taxes in. *giggle* I feel all giddy now for getting to use such a great sale! :-D

Next week, when one of the girls from the office comes back from vacation, we're going to take one lunch hour DVD workout session to "deconstruct" all the moves in 30=Day Shred, levels 1 & 2. One gal has really bad vertigo, and going from a lying down position to a standing one in less than 5 seconds is a big problem for her, I have to really watch my knees, and 2 others are just not advanced enough to do all the moves very well. I've been trying to help them with the modified moves, but I think if we do it all together, and focus on each move that we modify further, everyone should be able to remember how to modify the move for herself. Between now and next week, I'm going to check out several of the seated chair workouts, especially for abs, and a few other specific ones in Shred, and then we'll see what next week brings. I know the modifications are working, my knees haven't been sore in the last 2 weeks of doing Level 2, and I can almost do a full push-up. Almost. :-D I can only go halfway down to the floor before I push back up. Next week, I'm hoping to be strong enough to even do ONE real complete pushup. On the floor. Abs tight. No bending the knees. Wish me luck. :-D

Well, that's the end of my day, time to figure out what I'll make for supper, since it's stinkin' hot again tonight.

Spark on!

Jo

Sorry I've been so mising in action lately ladies. Summer is busy busy busy!

@ Jo yes me and my boyfriend have been living together for a year already, so we aren't jumping into the living together part of things, just the new apartment side of things :) haha it's a nice place closer to school/work though so I'm pumped!!

@ Char - where do you work? I would find that difficult (I have a wicked sweet tooth) but your will power is unstoppable!! Good for you!!

@ Nate Your son sounds so well rounded an amazing! Glad to hear your summer is going to great!

Well my summer has been nuts, planning the move (Aug 25!) and starting to pack, so many social events going on. My running hasn't been doing good the last couple of weeks, it's been so hot and so busy. I know, excuses, excuses, I gotta get ready for that 10K!! Yikes!!

Anyways that is all for today :)

Hey East Coasters!

Ever feel like your day is doomed from the moment you awaken? I'm having one of those days today. I'm not upset, I'm not angry, but I'm going to be hung out to dry at 2 meetings today, and I haven't figured out how to maintain my composure without being sent to the HR chair later on. My nerves are a little frazzled, and I'm trying hard not to have a cigarette before this morning meeting. I'm expecting to be lamb-basted before 10:30 this morning, all because of this project I'm working on.

@Nate - I saw your status updates, and although I haven't had a chance to go over your blog, it sounds like it would have been a LOT of fun! And your boy sounds like he has a head on his shoulders, and his Momma's common sense. :-D

Well, it's time to let the lamb-basting begin. *sigh* Hopefully it goes better than I expect.

Spark on!

Jo
