my dd is doing lots of food prep these days. She knows I'm fussy and we shop for groceries together so we don't buy stuff I absolutely won't eat but she makes things that are interesting combos. My comfort zone is expanding

New to this board. I've been sitting here laughing my head off. So many of you are just like me. I thought I was the only one so weird about food.

Question. My doctor would like me to eat broccoli. It is sooooooo good for me. I hate it. Is there anyway to cook or eat it that covers the taste?

Today will be yesterday tomorrow

I "hide" food in other foods.
for example:
I can't even consider putting cottage cheese in my mouth, but have it in lasagna
put veggies into casseroles and even into smoothies!
I looooove cheese so putting it on or in something means other things can also be in there. this is how I learned to eat spinach.
raw tomato is unappealing for me so I slice it very thin--I did discover that it really does makes a BLT sandwich taste better,--- which was a huge shock for me! Sometimes it is a combo that makes me realize that I can eat something that I know on its own would make me gag.
Good luck!

Hi! I'm a SP newbie, and I don't know if this has been covered before so I'll appologize up front. Do most of you have a pickiness from taste? A texture issue? Or a smell thing? Mine is mostly texture when it comes to fruit. I love fruit smoothies, but can't eat a piece of fruit. Vegetables are a completely different issue though. I eat very few vegetables and then just small portions and they must be crunchy. Any sort of lettuce makes me gag, but I can eat some spinach on a sandwich or in a pasta dish. Some smells completely set off my gag reflex also. I've been like this since I was a very very small child and have just learned to live with it, but I struggle with my weight loss due to my normally carb heavy diet. I've been to a nutrionist, a hypnotist you name it and nothing really works. Any ideas on how to get over my reluctance to even try anything? Thank goodness my son will try anything and I didn't pass this on to him!

If it doesn't smell good, I am not trying it....

I don't believe in "acquired" taste, if I don't like the first taste, I am not going to have a second

In the past year, I have tried some new things, mostly new recipes with foods I like.

I'm a BIG veggie hater. There are a few (raw carrots, cucumbers, lettuce), and peas are the only cooked veggies. My husband is good about trying to get me to try a new food or two. Hopefully someday, this won't be so hard....

I love zucchini but it needs to be added near the end of cooking so it doesn't turn to mush. I try to always have it as an ingredient in stir-fries as it picks up flavor, adds color and crunch and is good for you

I made a zucchini dish last night. I really don't like cooked vegetables and wish that the texture of the zucchini would have been a little crisper, but all in all, it wasn't bad!!

Oh yes i just tried quakier oats recently, so many different flavors now I guess. I chose the maple and brown sugar. I bought the box with packets so it's a small portioned size. I love it so much. I've had it for breakfast or lunch. satisfies my hunger needs for quite a while. I usually don't need to eat a lot during a meal which is good. I eat it with milk added instead of water as you can chose either way. Bananas plain are the best, i never used to like them and i just love them now. Also something I've always liked and I make once in a while and i'm not a cooker but so simple is deviled eggs; shouldn't probably eat a lot in one sitting as I think high calories since they are eggs, but they are my all time favorite snack and i add paprika on top when finished and serve. Watermelon is very satisfying snack and water in it.

Today I made chocolate oatmeal with banana slices for breakfast. It was so yummy!
Oatmeal is a great breakfast choice, but a lot of people just don't like it or find it boring(me!)
I make slow cooked oatmeal(not instant packages) because you get a HUGE portion that keeps you full for hours, here is the recipe:

1/2 cup oats
1 cup dark chocolate almond milk(or any other chocolate milk, I like almond milk because it provides more calcium per serving)
1 cup water
1 packet of low calorie hot chocolate mix(around 25 calories)
Dash of salt

Steps:
1. Add all ingredients in a non-stick pan and bring to a boil
2. Reduce to a simmer and cook for 12-15 minutes(or until creamy -- it will thicken more when you remove it from the heat) -- stirring occasionally
3. Pour into a decent-sized bowl(makes a large serving)
4. Slice a banana on top of oatmeal
5. Enjoy!!!

This recipe comes in at about 400 calories and is a great way to start the day!

*Credit goes to Lisa Lillien(HungryGirl) for the inspiration for this recipe*

For me it's the flavor. I'm always afraid of that "yuck" factor too - I hate the thought of being a grown woman and spitting out my food because it's "yucky", that's something my 2-year-old does. I've found mixing the new food with something I already like works best, or disguising the taste. I can't stand the smell of salad dressing (though to be honest I've never tried one), but I can eat baby salad greens plain or with steak sauce.

How come I have no problem trying new types of cake or cookies?

Mine also is a texture problem, among others. Also, the looks of the food. Although, I do like a dip that a freind made. Someone else said it looked like 'road kill'. It doesn't look that bad, but that phrase stays in my mind.....I still eat the dip. :-}

I wished I liked fish. I like chicken, more on the dry side than moist. I can eat can tuna mixed with tiny bit of miracle whip and relish on toast.

Maybe the fish thing is because I see it whole with eyes in the grocery store. Not that we would buy it that way. Ugh!

Wait...I did try crab cakes, cooked well done and breaded.

I end up trying a lot of new things and going "eww gross" a lot. it is a hazard, I'm araid.

the key for me is to know what kind of things I am picky - like, texture. Knowibng stuff that will "feel icky" is not gonna be eaten, I will try all the other things.

I tried something new today. I went to a friends house for a little get together and she served Navy beans and ham. I'm not crazy about ham, but I did like the navy beans. How can I doctor them up to make them better? She put nutmeg on hers, but I have a food intolerance to nuts. Does nutmeg have real nuts in it?

Hey Nims, didn't know you were on here....or did I just forget? How much of my memory will I lose next year?

I ate a salad tonight! This is a big deal for me because I have never eaten a salad in my life! I made it with baby spinach, strawberries, chicken and raspberry vinaigrette. Forgot the almonds. It was good, will take some getting used to. Will be having it for lunch for the next few days, since I threw it all together figuring all of my family would try it and only my husband did. I know my kids would like it, have to get them to try it today!

I wouldn't have thought of mixing sweet potato and white potato! What a great idea. I'll definitely have to give it a try.

I have discovered Chicken Apple Sausage - kinds of sweet (brand Al Fresco). It goes great with freshly cooked taters.

This was my first week on SP and I discovered Greek yogurt and I chopped up a small amount of onion, green peppers and tomatoes and sauteed them to soften them a little and then mixed them with egg to make an omelet. I like making homemade hash browns but I tried mixing in some sweet potato with the russet and it was very good.

A few years ago I went on a Medical Weightloss diet. The diet was very strict where I had to eat at least four fruits and three vegetables everyday-- which I'm noticing is what we should be doing in general. Anyhow-- my problem was before going on that diet there are very few fruits and vegetables I would actually eat.

Ever since I was little I've only eaten apples, watermelon and blackberries as fruits. All other fruits I couldn't stomach. On the diet they gave you certain choices-- one of which was an orange. I LOATHED oranges. The smell made my stomach turn and the texture was disgusting to me-- I also disliked how stick your hands can become after eating them (if you're peeling an orange). I told myself I needed to learn to like oranges in order to succeed on the diet-- and one day I made myself eat one. Today I enjoy eating oranges-- but I buy the dole ones that are in 100% juice. My trick? The whole time I was chewing my first orange I kept telling myself it wasn't so bad and that it was a food that was good for me. Also I constantly reminded myself that I was making myself like a new food and this was progress!

Unfortunately-- today I am still limited on the fruits and vegetables I will eat. My veggies are generally limited to corn, carrots and broccolli. However-- it should be noted I will not eat cream corn or scalloped corn. Only regular corn or sweet corn. The other's gross me out. Similarly-- I can eat raw carrots but don't like carrots in syrup or usually cannot eat ones that are cut into pieces and cooked. Also-- I can't eat raw broccolli-- it has to be steamed.

Since I've learned to love cooking (after my sister purchased a cookbook for me I got hooked).. I am a little better equipped to try new recipes I wouldn't normally eat. Understand this is only because I can see what I'm putting in a recipe and know what I'll be eating. When I was very young I wouldn't eat lasagna at all because I didn't like the texture of lasagna noodles. In fact-- I wouldn't eat any pasta noodles except for spaghetti noodles.. all others made me sick. Since cooking I've learned to accept the fact that I can eat other pasta noodles and can indeed eat lasagna-- (but I will leave out ingredients!) Cottage cheese I hate and will definitely not be included in any recipe I make.

All in all- I rarely if ever try new things. There are many foods I know I will never try because I can't stand the sight, smell or texture of them. Cooking has opened me up a little-- but I refuse to put the foods I don't like in my recipes and still have trouble eating certain things like lasagna noodles.

I have made a concerted effort this year to AT LEAST try things knowing that I don't have to like them...it has taken me 23 years to get to the point where I am at least willing to try something. With that said, it probably needs to be combined with something I do like, like cheese or put on a pizza.

All your life you are told the things you cannot do. All your life they will say you're not good enough or strong enough or talented enough; they will say you're the wrong height or weight or the wrong type to play this or achieve this. They will tell you no, a thousand times, no, until all the no's become meaningless. All your life they will tell you no, quite firmly and very quickly. AND YOU WILL TELL THEM YES!

Marie - I really have to be in the right frame of mind to try something new or retry it. I'm getting old and pretty much know what appeals to me and what doesn't. As I get older I find I'm tired of having to explain my pickiness. It is who I am. And, no I'm not giving any credence to the new eating disorder they are trying to pin on picky eaters. I say everyone is different and live with it.

Sometimes for me, it's the lesser of the available evils. We have Panda Express and I really wanted something different. I like chicken and mushrooms but hesitated at zucchini. I like it fried, but this was just plain zucchini. I got it anyway and figured I could pick it out, but I tried it anyway. And, liked it! Turns out if it's not soggy, but nice and crisp it ain't bad. So, I chalked one up for me.

I actually had surprisingly good luck at an Indian restaurant with a buffet a few months back - I tried not to look at what was in things as I picked them, and at least sampled everything I took. I even liked a lot of it! It was definitely a day where I was in the food-trying zone :)

Buffets are probably one of the best ways for me to dabble in new foods... however, they're quite dangerous for my eating habits at the same time ;P I am attending a healthy pot luck in a few weeks, so I'm hoping that I might get to branch out a bit more!

It was pretty much meat and potatoes at my house growing up and what we grew in the garden. That did not include carrots, which I like, or broccoli (only if it's in something) and some of the other veggies.

I agree, mood is a key factor in trying something else, as is the free sample. I was in a Fresh Market a few weeks ago and they were handing out samples of pan seared scallops. I love my Mom's fried scallops (I'm a southern girl) and rarely try anyone elses. These were delicious. I was sorry later that I didn't get some. Next time.

Also, appearance, texture and if it's a known food, i.e. related to a potato or something. If it's too exotic, I'm probably not that adventurous and sadly a good portion of vegetables simply taste bad to me regardless of what is done to them.

And, of course, as mentioned before meals somewhere else or even buffets, where you can get a dab and see what you think.

Good topic.

My Mom cooked every night, but the menu repeated every 2 weeks. We had to eat what was on the table or starve... so we ate.
As soon as I started to work, I stopped eating what I did not like (would get take-out).
Unfortunately, I got into the same rut (not much variety in meals) and my kids are now even pickier than I am! emoticon

My mother didn't cook much either... although to be honest, I don't know if that was because I was so picky or not? I never really asked!

I'm very glad that this community exists on Spark - it helps me realize that my picky eating is not totally abnormal :P

For me I'm not good with the seasoning to make it flavorful last night a customer came through the line with Tilapia that was seasoned all ready and breaded and you just bake it so I am going to try it again I did it once and made a mess of it to mushy and i did not like it

My problem my mother was not a cook she made the same ole stuff all the time

Yew, the mood has a lot to do with it. This is not something I would do if I needed comfort food. I like to try new things if they come in a sample size. For example this summer my hubby and I were shopping at Sam's and they were passing out free samples of a chicken and spinach sausage. My first thought was yuk! But my hubby, much to my surprise, tried it and insisted that I give it a shot. It is really spicy and so good. With it being a sample if I hadn't liked it there would have been no waisted money. I like that. I've also tried new things when at other peoples houses and occasionally and pleasantly surprised. In the last year I have discovered that I like roasted potatoes with parmesan cheese and spinach ravioli.

I'm with you, I have to be in the mood, plus the food has to look like something I'd want to try.
Fish has been a problem all along. I can eat canned tuna fixed up for a sandwich (with relish and just enough Miracle Whip to hold it together). I like the Tilapia at the hospital cafeteria. It has to be dry, not moist.

I did finally get use to Stouffer's French Bread veggie pizza. I take the onions off and any big pieces of pepper etc.

I'd be interested in any tips too.

Since most if not all of us here are picky eaters... do you ever try new foods? How do you psych yourself up to try them?

Every once in a while, I'll get in a mood where I feel up for branching out (just a little!) For instance, the other night I had a pizza with spinach on it (and, to my surprise, didn't mind it!) But on most nights, there's no WAY I'd try something new... especially if it varied too far from my comfort zone. Any tips?

(I'm sure a topic like this has probably been posted in the past, but I can't seem to find one, so I figured I'd start fresh - hope that's OK! :)
