Right now, I'm not dealing with my pain,my right deltoids and 1/2 my upper arm have a tearing sensation. I can actually feel as though someone is stabbing my neck to my elbow with multiple knives, just dragging them slowly down my arm.I tell you, it's almost the worst pain I've ever felt! I'll see what's what on Monday, that's when I can report to PT. John

John, lol, I am older than you. My body doesn't put out much heat, so when I try to use ice, I just freeze to death. I wish I could use it more. I can barely stand that chilly few minutes after getting out of the shower. UGH. I do a walk, get all warmed up, and then shower. It works.

Although I dread our hot AZ summer, I will be glad when the days and nights do warm up. Sure wish I still lived in the Los Angeles climate!

I am well over 18,lol,add 36 years and I'm there, lol. The problem with those patches,my insurance company has been playing hardball,I've been turned down every time my doctor applies for them. I have neuropathy to both sides of my body,my deltoids are killing me. I take some more pain killers at 8. I can wait for then. But, in the meantime I'll get some ice in a bag and put that on my right deltoids. John

John, I am sure you can still get a Rx for the Lidoderm patches from the Doctors. It was about 5 or so years ago when I was Rn ing, that I did apply them to patients. So I am sure they still have them. Too bad they aren't otc. I think more things for chronic pain should be otc. And if you are over 18 you should be able to buy them. LOL, vicodin would be nice for me otc. But I know that's not going to happen.

Ah, I found an old Lidoderm Pain patch and put it on my right deltoids and now, I feel great in my neck! I'm going to search for more of those patches for my lumbar. I know I can only use two of them at a time because of the lidocaine in them,so I'll choose the next site carefully.
Well, that's it from loonyville, take care and feel better, John

Thanks Phyllis,
I'll give it a try. I think I'm going to have the cervical spine operated on. My right deltoids is killing me. I tried heat and ice on it to no avail, not even the Meloxicam didn't work on it. It's an NSAID. Ah,one more day of ice treatments' then I call my doctor,my physical therapy doctor is also a physiatrist. He'll give me advice on whether or not to get it operated on.

John, I take generic store brand Benadryl for sleep. I take 2 at bedtime, and 2 when I wake up a few hours later. Otherwise I won't sleep at all. It helps me a lot. I cannot function if I don't sleep much.

High Phyliss,
I've been sleeping very little lately. Last night,I slept only 2 hours. I think my nap will make up some of the time that I lost.
Still having trouble with the neck/back pain every day. Walking has been brutal, but I still try to do it everyday got an icepack on my neck right now. I'll be laying down soon, I can only stay on line for twenty minutes at a time now.
I start physical therapy next week,or as soon as I can do it. Take care and be as well as you can be, John

Gosh, it was quite cold here a few days ago, I had to huddle in bed. I couldnt even think of exercise to help me warm up. I was so cold and my pain was worse. What is it, the barometric pressure or what????????

John and Candycane, hope you get warmed up and have less pain. I want to take a pain pill now, but I have 3 hours to wait. UGH. Then can sleep.

The first flu came on Xmas eve and lasted till January15th, I just caught the second one.

Everybody who was in pain before the flu, well, the pain increased ten fold. I ache therefore I am. I can't wait until flu season is over. John.

RUNNERGIRL, welcome to our team. Sorry to hear you got the tainted steroid injections. I could read your frustration with it. I just do what I can each day within my limits, I still take pain pills twice to three times a day to help ignore the pain which is so emotionally debilitating for me. When I cannot exercise I find that staying at the low range calories keeps me from gaining weight. Also it is my goal to be OUT of the bed for 12 hours minimum each day, 14 hours is even better. I try to walk around my house every half hour or so. Just so I am not sitting all day. I use treadmill when I feel up to it. I have to force myself to exercise, cause of the pain. Which I know I will have no matter what I do, so I force myself. Nothing takes my pain away totally, except for the first three hours after a pain pill, I try to take advantage of that time, for exercise or chores.
Keep putting one foot in front of the other. Hope you get better. Keep us posted on your progress, or just vent. We're here to listen and support. I always feel better when I vent.

Today I am joining your group as I am up and about due to the pain in my back and tingling and pain in my hands. I take quite a bit of medication, very similar to many of the writers here. Yesterday I was in such pain that a few alcoholic beverages actually masked the pain to where I could spend time with my husband of 20 years. I was one of the unlucky 14,000 who received tainted steroid injections and my doctors can't do anything right now (except increase meds.) until my biopsy is cleared (another 3 weeks) This has been a long 5+ months with pain. The injections normally worked for 3-6 months and when they did, WOW! I was physically active and have gained more weight over the last few months with holiday yummies and no exercise that I am so mad at myself. Any suggestions on dealing with the pain, weight gain and inability to exercise?

Hello Beth150,
I'm still trying to get rid of the flu that I caught the day before Xmas, what timing huh? I have asthma and COPD so anything lung related is going to take a long time to heal. I did manage to not eat for five days! I lost 9 pounds during the flu. I hope to keep that weight off. I have a cup of herbal tea and an english muffin for breakfast,a salad for lunch, and just vegetables for dinner. It's helping me keep that weight off. I'm now 239 pounds. I was stuck at 248 for a long time. Hopefully, this year I can get walking for distance again this year. I go back to Physical therapy in early Feb. , I can only get the prescription for PT in late January, but I have tests to do all month,or, most of the month. I may have shingles. I have regions of burning skin on my arms, torso , neck and head. All in different sides too.
The test I have to take is called an SSEP test, that stands for Somato Sensory Evoked Potential. It is,basically a nerve test for the arms and legs. They measure how fast pain reaches my brain. I can tell them how fast it is right now, lol. The a blood test for shingles, more tests for my neck, I have a myelopathy and several disc's that are touching either the sac surrounding the spinal cord or is actually touching the spinal cord. Those bone spurs that are touching the spinal cord could also be the culprit for the burning sensation I have.
Well, have a better new year than the last and take care, John

Phyllis, I started to FORCE myself to stay out of bed after 9 hrs of sleep about 1 month ago. I will admit it was really really hard at first. But it has been 1 of the best things I have done for myself! I do sit & rest quite often but when iI do I sit in a hard back kitchen chair that while is not hard per say on my back it is not a chair to get cozy in. This way I won't sit down TOO long lol ;)

I do allow myself a 20 minute power nap 1 time a day if I really need it. I set a kitchen dinger and keep it on the stove and I lay down in the living room, that way I have to get up to turn it off ;)

I also drink a lot of coffee lol

John I am sorry you don't get sleep. I am grateful that I do. Once I take my muscle relaxers within 1/2 hr it's lights out. I have to force myself to get up each day or I would sleep for 12+ hours :(

Have you ever tried anything just for insomnia?

Hi John, I think because we have limited mobility, we get tired in a different way, as compared to an active life and regular exercise which helps people be tired in the right way so they sleep well. I slept much better when I was fully active. Now, if it weren't for drugs and benadryl, I probably would only sleep 3 hours and that really is messed up. I didn't sleep well last night. Kept waking up. Got up early too so I don't feel very energetic today either.
Looking forward to the new year. I'm hoping to keep with my goals of exercise and being out of bed 12 hours minimum. That's a hard one when pain is minimum when lying flat in bed.
Keep putting one foot in front of the other.

Happy Christmas Phyllis and everyone else,
I too, have been having sleeping problems, insomnia, I would fall asleep after 11 and awaken at 3,sometimes 2 hours sleep. I don't begin my regimen of medications until I can finish at 630AM,then I have breakfast and try to do some riding on the recumbent bike or, take a walk.
During the day, I try to nap. Sometimes it works sometime it doesn't. John

Hi CANDYCANE, hope things get better for you. Good to see you on the team.

JOHN, I can relate to the pain pill wearing off. Glad you made it home safely. I have since cut back to every 12 hours, it was hard to do but at least I am not as foggy headed. I time my exercise for when the pain pill is 'really' working. BUT the last two months or so, I have had major sleep disruptions every night due to DH sleep schedule, I was so fatigued with messed up sleep that I didn't exercise hardly at all. SO, now I go to bed at 6pm with my bedtime meds, and awake at 2 or 3 when DH gets up. LOL last night I slept 12 hours. I was very tired last night. I've only been sleeping this schedule for a week and I am starting to have a bit more energy and am up out of bed for 12 to 14 hours which is a huge accomplishment. Pain is somewhat less with better sleep and less stress and fatigue. LOL, I can sit up straight much longer the past few days.
Oh well, I am rambling on,
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year that has fewer painful days!
Phyllis

Hi Phyllis,
I'm just home from a very short walk, my pain killers died on me while I was on my way up a hill,I couldn't believe how quickly they fail. I was on the ground for a few minutes.I climbed my way back upward, both legs were numb. I probably looked like Frankenstein walking, lol. I made it home after stopping every few steps, so, it took me a while to get back indoors.
I wont be forgetting my next dose, that's for sure. John

Jocke, I feel for you. I too have these kind of pain problems every day. I am still on pain meds every eight hours so I got the foggy head to deal with too, not to mention the dizzyness. Back problems really suck. I really hope you feel better tomorrow. Hope the ice and heat help it too. I tried ice on my thoracic joint problem, it helped til it warmed up again. Oh well.
Stay strong somehow.

Hi Marty, I tried that a few years ago but I would turn into one huge spasm, even now, when I lay flat my thoracic spine's herniations with neuropathy on both sides and there are three herniations in my neck, these puppies have bone spurs coming out the ying yang. With visible neuropathies to the arms and legs, both neuropathies go down each entire arm and each entire legs, weakness, shaking, and that 'P' word, all the time. Jocko.

Jock, I'm sorry to hear about your pain, as I do understand it. Try to take your mind off of it. I find that lying flat with no pillows helps. It takes pressure of the lower back.

Saturday wasn't too bad for my pain. I did have problems on Sunday though, my lumbar is not a happy camper right now. I'm only able to sit up for twenty minutes, then my lower back begins to really hurt. Once again, the SI joint is the culprit, every time I slightly move to the left or right I just about scream, leaning is a problem too. I've been using the heating pad on and off all day.
I'm going to use an ice pack next, just to see if that will help with the pain.

Jock, my problem was L-4 thru S-1. I had lost control of bladder, bowel, and was unable to move legs at all. No backache nor back problems prior to the fateful day. Jogging on Sat, broken on Sunday. Five months ago developed compression fracture at L-3, with 3 more herniated disks L-1 thru L-3, and convex curvature of spine. It takes about 6 weeks for a fracture to heal ( per Dr). I laid flat for a couple of months. Had a heart attack and strokes during that time. Heart attack is about 6 weeks for recovery also. At least I had them all at once so could recover all at the same time...LOL

The doctors put back surgery off as long as possible unless an emergency. My neighbors sister had back surgery the month after myself. She only lived a couple of months after that. She had a heart attack. We were the same age. She may not have been in a nursing home after surgery. I had strokes after surgery, which is not unusual. Now my back hurts from all the metal that supports me. Pain after surgery is about 1,000 on a scale of 1 to 10 for about a year, even with high doses of morphine, norco, vicoden, gabapentine, cymbalta, ibruprophen, etc, and epidurals all at the same time. Dilauden gives some relief. Acceptance of the pain, works. I was in too much pain to do the Tens unit, I could not stand to even touch my own skin. I went cold turkey, as my head was so fuzzy. At the time I was in bad shape and wanted to go with a clear head.

The Dr was wonderful, I now have control of all body parts below waist. I was told, I was very lucky, and I believe it.

I guess what I'm saying is that surgery is not for pain relief.

Best wishes,
Marty

It's 217PM and I haven't slept in 48 hours. My lumbar and SI joint are killing me. I've been treating the pain with my regular pain killers and a muscle relaxer. I know, my doctor is under treating my pain. The vicodin HP wears off after just three hours,it's supposed to last six hours,in between times I use either and ice pack or as of late, I've been using the heating pad. This pain makes it tough to sit or move for that matter.
If I can't sleep tonight,I'll call my doctor in the morning., I've four herniated disc's in my cervical spine, three in the thoracic spine and three in the lumbar spine and SI joint hurting badly too! I haven't had a recent MRI to the lumbar in five years, but it stated that I have C3-4,C4-6,C6-7, ,and C7-T1. Three of the herniations are touching my spinal cord! This is causing some serious problems too.
John

First my most heartfelt apologies for dropping the ball here for this team & all of you members!

Not making any excuses! I was under a great deal of stress and it came out in a variety of ways. 1 of them was great back pain. As each of us know stress makes pain much worse.

When I am in great pain I play turtle and go into my shell - something I am really going to work on NOT doing any more. Inside of my shell It grows darker and more depressed, not a helpful place to be.

I think in part I do that as I don't want to see the land of the "normal living", as it reminds me of what all I have lost.

But that was then, I am doing much better now and have some new tools to help keep my pain under better control :)

I am renewing my commitment to this team - I commit to do my best for you! emoticon

It's 1:30 AM. I'm dealing with pain by writing this missive. I went to bed about 3:00 PM yesterday. I rested, reading magazines and doing Sparkpeople. I slept from 7:00 PM on. Now I'm awake for a while. I did wake up a few times to readjust my body. Movement is a grin and bear it situation. I grimace and slowly turn over.

Since my surgery, I sleep in a separate bedroom from my husband. It's a twin bed. I have bookcases on each side, which I use to assist me when I turn over or get up.

In the nursing home they teach you to use your arms for assistance. LOL, they are not in pain. There is pain above a 10, it's a whiteout, forget everything else, screaming 1,000. It's a body weakening pain, so your arms have no strength to assist you. The PT says you can do this, he should be in my body. LOL.

I had to keep insisting to go home, as I was getting weaker all the time. I did not want to become a permanent residence. I know there was good reason to stay longer now that I'm rational. I had needed oxygen one night which may have been my last if I had not had their assistance. I had other problems also. But self-preservation kicked in and I wanted out of there. My DH got a care provider. I did not care about details, I just wanted to go home.

The care provider was great. I slept almost all of the time. The screams would have been to much for my husband, I could tell thru my haze. He helped me with my bowel movements as even in pain there is embarrassment. I was incontinent at first, but nothing I could do about it. I was not aware of when I went or of being wet. I still have a black toenail, due to the blanket being too heavy and I was unable to turn my foot at all. The effort was too much to ask for assistance, I just went back to sleep. I have a small scar on my leg, where a heated massager was on to long. I had no feeling, so no reason to say anything. LOL, that's some of the reasons for the nursing home. They know how to handle the situation, to keep you alive. At that point I did not care, I just wanted out of there.

All was for the best. I'm alive again, doing normal things. I can shop, till I drop. I can go for walks by the beach (not in the sand yet). I cook and clean. I can even do some office work. I am a partially functioning member of society..LOL.

My back hurts, but what the heck. I'm reminded of that song "no one promised you a rose garden", and the other "that's life".

Living life, and loving it,
Marty

I currently only take Lortab at night as needed and heating pad. I am supposed to go for my 4th steroid injection next month but I am not to keen on the side effects. Otherwise I am just learning to live with the pain and I have yet to let it stop me. I am struggling with taking more weight off since my exercise was severly effected, but overcoming a bit each day. Praying hard it doesn't get any worse!!

Since May when last I posted here, I had heart attack in June, strokes, additional new stress fracture at L-3' new protruding disks at L-3, L-2, L-1. Developed convex curvature. Was down 105 lbs, looked too thin, have since regained 30 lbs that I now want to lose slowly. Went thru morphine withdrawal as I was so fuzzy and depressed and nothing seemed to be helping with the pain. I went cold turkey on all drugs, as I wanted to at least die with a clear head. I could not use a tens unit as I could not even stand to touch my own skin. I could not even stand a sheet on my lower body. I felt like the sweat was my own flesh melting.

Today, I walked at the park almost a mile, and fed the squirrels. I prepared food and cleaned the kitchen. I shopped on Black Friday and Small Bus Saturday. I prepared Thanksgiving dinner. I still have pain and would go to emergency if I didn't already know what it was. I still yell and cry a little in the shower. My back is killing me most of the time I'm not lying down and then it's just hurting.me.

I'm glad to be alive, walking and have regained the control of my bladder and bowels. I had a great doctor.

I guess I need to listen to my own motiviational quotes. I am having a very hard time dealing with my back pain right now. It has been terrible since last Fri. I got my shot then. The pain has been at least an 8 every day since then. I haven't been able to do much of anything. But of course I am dealing with some other things also. I have high B/P, high cholesterol, Bipolar out of control, and I don't know what all else. I am actually afraid for myself.
Keep strong that is what I need to keep telling myself.

Here is a motivational quote that I hope helps everyone.

"Believe in yourself and all that you are. Know that there is something inside you that is greater than any obstacle". Christian D. Larson.

I am going to use this to motivate me. You know how that song goes "No mountain high enough." Well, no obstacle is to big for us to conquer. It may seem insurmountable, but if we just hang in there, we will make it. I am going to write that on a sticky note and hang it on my bathroom mirror, so I will see it and read it everyday.

I went on a mini vacation, just back at 2Am ln the morning, duh. My back was killing me the entire time there,NJ, I finally bought an ice pack with frozen jell inside to keep it frozen longer.
I found some relief when I put it on my neck. I fell asleep comfortably for the last two days of my mini vacation. During the drive back, I used it on my lumbar , boy, that felt fantastic. I'm at home with ice in the freezer, four bags of gelatinous ice. I'm going to use them all I bet,

I am doing the excersizes the PT gave me and I am going to use tens unit I got. I neglected my back pain for so long and just made my back problems get worse and worse. I'll be in debt for a long time due to how much this is going to cost me, but I just could not stand the pain anymore. I should of listened to my husband along time ago. emoticon

That sounds horrible! But you have such a great attitude!

I'm at a point where I can get by with a lot of stretching and a heating pad. When it gets worse I use a tens machine at home, and if it's really bad I'll take my muscle relaxants for a few days (and maybe sleep on the floor a night or two). Since we got a new mattress I'm doing better, though.

-8 pounds (32 total) by October

I've been in physical therapy 2-3 days a week for the past two years, without any breaks in between. Also every 8 weeks my husband and I travel 4 1/2 hours to see my neurologist, and I have 70+ injections all over my head, into my brain stem, down my neck, across & down my shoulders, injections traveling all the way down my spine to my tail bone, where several are also given, then both hips as well as surrounding area, and back up my body with many given in my ribs.

It's been a long two years since my sleep walking stair case fall~and since then my neck and full spine are in severe degeneration. The injections last 5-6 weeks, but we only make it out of state every 8 weeks. From the start I've been on muscle relaxers~4 times a day, 800 mg of IB prophen (sp?) up to three times a day, and can take vicodine up to four times a day (if one tablet at a time). Two at a time, and I only take it twice a day.

It was a doozy of a fall. Never thought at the age of 39, I'd be faced with sudden life long changes. I do manage to still smile though, and have made it to the age of 41, nearly 42....wheel chair free....so far, even with spinal cord trauma. Hooray for positive thinking, and wonderful specialists!!!!

A "TENS unit" is a 'transdermal electric nerve stimulator ' that helps me to kill nerve pain by just putting the two "electrodes"(pads) on each side of my lumbar spine (right where it hurts). You can dial up or down the electric shocks. The higher you can "take it" the better off the nerve pain will subside. Or, at least, that's my idea of what it does for me.

I use ice on my neck to kill the nerve pain. Have you tried that yet? The ice kills the nerve pain for hours with me, I then use the ice again for an hour or so. Just long enough to kill the nerve pain.
When sciatica get it's grip on me I use either the TENS unit or ice. I think the TENS does a superior job on the lower lumbar for me. When the pain returns, I'll use ice, then the TENS unit,on and off.
When the radiculopathies hit both of my legs, usually only the outer part of my legs to my toes, I use only ice to kill the pain.

There is not much I can do with the pain in my lower back. nothing seems to help but lots of rest today the pain level is a 5 which means there is rain on the way. My neck and left shoulder however have been on a pain level of 100 out of 1 -10. 10 of course being the worse. So today I am using my tens machine that no longer works for my lower back but seems to give me some relief for my neck pain if only while it is on for an hour. I hate pain meds. They cause mood swings in me and make me sleep all the time.

Pain is a killer for me,my medication for pain has become weaker to the point it only relieves pain for three hours instead of six. I use ice to try and kill the nerve pain, the worst in my opinion. I have it day in and day out.
I finally got an appointment to see a neurologist on the sixth, I can't wait. I have a chronic condition called myelopathy, and bone spurs touching the spinal cord in three area's of my back and neck, with several more osteophytes in the Lumbar and thoracic spines. Not fun at all. John/ NY

Pain..

I have been on so many medications since november 2010 I have ended up with a GI bleed if the back injury is not bad enough on its own.
This is a cool topic I look forward to scrolling back to see some new idea's that I could try.

I never tried hypnosis either. But, yesterday while in the doctors office I found out my results to the nerve conductivity test. It was bad news. I've got a serious radiculopathy to the right leg and right side of my lumbar spine. I knew I was in bad pain but now I MUST see a Neurologist to find an answer to the problem. If she recommends surgery I may have to turn it down and go another way. I've had three surgeries already and am not looking forward to another.
She will also address my spondylolithesis to L5,S1. A large herniation is located in the same place. That is a source of serious pain too. When it erupts I can not stand or sit for any amount of time.

My issues were 3 ligaments tore away from my spine, which had to be stitched back. A MRI showed that I had pulverized 2 disks and for many years had been walking bone on bone with no leg or back pain. The Dr's did not know how I took a step, and how it felt when I moved. They thought I must have been in a major auto accident or fell down a huge flight of stairs. They inquired if I could move me legs at all. The day before I had done a dozen different stretches, a hundred full hip abductions, then a hundred with each leg separately, a hundred regular squats, a hundred wide stance squats, a hundred reverse crunches, a hundred calf raises, a hundred calf rockers, went to Curves, went to the park and jogged with my 18 year old grand-daughter, then did my normal house cleaning, shopping, and cooking for the day. I woke up the next morning a little stiff, but no discomfort. Did my stretches and 50 full hip abductions but felt extremely tired. I went back to bed (which I never do), and woke up in extreme pain. I now have two artificial disks, two screws approximately 3 inches long, some wiring, spacers, and scars on the front and on the back.

The ortho doctor states no hip abductions. I am hoping for full recovery in about a year and a half. I've not used a walker when I go out for about a week now, but I'm a very slow walker. I did laundry for the first time today and also cleaned the kitchen, I have been a week without a care giver (4 hours a day previously). I have not worn a back brace for about a month. I've been driving for the last two weeks. I try to get out of the house every day.

I have had several radio frequency ablaitions done and I have a bake brace to use while working out and on real bad days I wear a tens unit. If all else fails I take a tylenol codein at night but it gives me a headache. Oh I recently started trying hypnosis on my ipod at night. I was very skeptical but it actually helps...has anyone else tried hypnosis

Wow, that is awful. What is your issue? My pain is 6 usually, without medication. I've tried Cymbalta and the other psychiatric crap drugs they try to give us, and the only thing they do is put me into a brain fog. I got sick of the drugs; I've tried so many, and nothing really does anything.

I also had the epidurals. The first in Dec, which kept me down in bed for 3 days, even though I was also taking morphine, norco, valium, Cymbalta, gabipintine, and ibruprofin. The one I had in Jan kept me down a week, even with all of the drugs. I opted for no more epidurals. The Cymbalta gave me large sores, like cold sores, in my mouth, lips, and on my side. The ibruprofin gave me large blotches of blisters, on my neck and waist, small ones on my neck (necklace), and very large ones at and around my waist (some may leave scarring). The norco did relieve the pain but I would have to take a tablespoon of antacid before taking it (extreme stomach pain). I am down to only morphine now, 5ml up to 4 times a day. Yesterday I only took it 3 times. The pain level is about 6 or 7, something I can live with.

CWPRAISIN, good you are going to get another opinion!

Smiley - So sorry to hear about your shoulder. Adds insult to injury! Have you tried an interferential for your pain? I think it's fantastic. It helps so much. It is the same principal as a TENS (TENS does not work for me) but it goes much deeper, and goes through different modes. I get at least an hour or more pain free from it.

Decided to NOT go with LSI for my back surgery. I have since then, heard too many negative things about them. I have another appt set up with my previous back doctor to see what he wants to do. Probably the same thing; I will let you all know.
Yeah, it's funny. Sometimes I am not receiving my messages from specific teams as well.

Smilineyesbllue, I will certainly be praying for your speedy recovery. I will mark it on my calendar.I know all of this can be really scary. I am having mixed emotions myself over my future surgeries. God bless you and be with you!

Somehow I have not been getting any news from this group and it irritates me a lot. I have marked I want all email pertaining to my teams.

My countdown to my hip replacment is started and Feb. 20th will be here and I am ready. The pain is best controlled by heat and ice.

I tore a shoulder muscle and now can hardly get up and down out of a chair. must heal before the surgery so I can lift myself and walk with a walker.

Prayers needed and I will keep our team in our prayers.

Its called Minimal Invasive Surgery. Google Laser Spine Institute and check it out for yourself.
I had one disc worked on a few years ago and was doing great for a while. They have come a long way since then.
No, I don't have hepititis but just using alot of medications (pills) over time damages your liver.

Help your liver? You mean by getting off of meds? You don't have hepatitis, I hope!!! What kind of surgery?

I had two rhizotomies; neither worked. But I hear they do work for a lot of people.

I am going in March to have the minimal invasive surgery done for my back (L 3. 4, 5 and S1)
I have gotten off almost all of my medications but a couple but now am taking supplements for my adrenal fatigue and fibro. I will be glad to get this done but am dreading it at the same time. I have to do something to help my liver though; this is crazy, huh ladies?

Hi Digi, I have an Interferential. It works for the deep bone pain. I know Zynex makes them and it is called the IF-8100 www.zynexmed.com/products/
Much better than the TENS, which didn't really help me at all.

I've noticed that I'm having to use my TENS unit a lot, it feels like forever since I've seen my physiatrist. But the TENS unit doesn't help the bone-pain feelings that I'm having, so I'm slapping on some BioFreeze with hopes that it helps. I'll be starting PT next week, though, so I'm hopeful that some good manual therapy might help to get my spine moving again.

Yes, Jeannieboen, there is hope. As long as you are breathing, there is hope. For one thing, there are safe and somewhat (I use that word because I have constant pain too even with the med) effective pain medications available.

But the first thing I would advise is to FIRE THAT DOCTOR!!!! He works for you, not you for him. After all, you are paying him...or someone is paying him...to help you. If he won't listen to you and blows you off, then get out of there and don't go back! It takes some courage, I know...I've done it more times than I care to count. But this is your health and your body that we are talking about.

To find another doctor, call a hospital that is in your insurance plan. They always have a referral service for doctors in their network. Ask for an orthopedic neurologist who specializes in conditions of the spine. If there aren't any, ask for an orthopedist who specializes in conditions of the spine. There most likely is one somewhere. And if you have to drive a bit to get to one who will listen to you, that gas expenditure will definitely be worth it.

If you don't like the doctor that was referred to you, keep looking. A bunch of first appointments are like first dates...you are checking each other out. Just because you see someone once doesn't obligate you to go back. Keep at it until you find someone who will listen to you. They may not give you exactly what you want but listening is a start. You two can work on the rest of it together.

Hang in there, honey. We all know what you are going through. Pain sucks. Being overweight sucks (especially when your doctor jumps all over your case about it every time you see him). Life, in general, sucks. But there are precious moments every day that you can't overlook just because you are in so much pain. Those moments are what keep me going...a picture of a beautiful sunset, the laughter of a baby, a smile from a stranger, a sale at the grocery store...you get the picture. Look for those moments; cherish them as signs of hope and you will find yourself smiling in spite of all the pain and misery.

You can eat an elephant only by taking one bite at a time.

Feeling really discouraged tonight. It's good to know some of you have found relief. My pain is chronic and continuous. It affects all areas of my life. I can no longer to any form of excercise. I have herniations in L3, L4, L5 and S1. I also have scoliosis and pain in the cervical region of my back.

I was born with cerebral palsy but was alwasy able to walk or ride a stationery bike until this started happening. How did you get your docs to take you serious? My doc only gives me oral prednisone when my pain is so severe I am nearly screaming and crying. The rest of the time I take handfuls of ibuprofen to deal with pain when I stand, pain when I sit up, pain when I walk, you get the picture. My God, I would like to be healthy again, and I would like to start taking off some of this weight I have packed on over the last few years. I just can't see how...is there hope?

I use, what my physiotherapist calls a Stim. I put two pads on either side of my spine where my muscles are spasming (not a word I'm sure) and wear it for a couple of hours. It doesn't help the numb leg and weak knee because it is just for pain control and won't do anything for the herniated discs. Unfortunately if you overuse it, it will eventually quit working. I don't use it when I'm not doing anything much for a day or so. It does keep the muscles more relaxed.

I had Epidural Shots in my spine for months until they quit working. Then I had L3, L4, and L5

fused in May 2010 and the pain all went away. I moved into a rehab place for 3 weeks and they worked me hard and send me home ready to live my life again.

Now I need a hip replacement come Feb. 20th and follow that up with a knee replacement about July........I want to be active again and living on pain pills is not life to me. I have never sat and read so many hours and days in my life.........

I use a walker and a cane now to keep me moving and bless the stores that have the electric carts. Fight for your life and find answers you can live with.

Visiting a PT helped me tremendously. He did two simple corrective procedures and taught be some basic stretches. My pain slowly disappeared over a month or so. I'd supplement with advil if/when the pain got to be too much.

I go back to these three things whenever I have a flare up. I also avoid doing anything that causes more pain until it heals.

I try to keep it at bay w/Motrin and rest but when it gets really bad to where I can't even lift a foot to walk over to a chair or wall I CRY first.I worry God a lot because with deteriorated 4&5 you get pelvic pain as well as the pain down your legs and butt cheeks. When I start my work early in the morning I try to pace myself but if to much pain comes on,I'm shut down for the rest of the day I just don't like it when it happens mid-day,then my whole rest of the day is shot to hell. But reading some of the reply's here I feel that I'm not alone and when my kids don't understand until they see me crying,I do feel like sometime I'm alone in this battle for wellness.

Have you worked with a pain management team? Our clinic had one and they worked wonders for me.

Could you have the arthroscopic lap band surgery and help yourself lose weight more quickly and get this surgery done?

Has anyone had acupuncture or acupressure? Hypnosis? It would be a miracle to feel really good just one day and be able to live my life like I want to. bitch and moan....sorry.......

Let's keep chatting and throwing out ideas and see what we come up with. Marianne

P.S. One doctor told me to lose weight and then he would operate on me...well duh...IF I didn't have this back pain so severe I wouldn't be overweight in the first place and have to see him and therefore have an operation.

LOL Oh, Ladies...
Right NOW, I am taking the Tramadol 4x a day and Gabapentin at night but going up to 2x a day next week. I use the heating pads and ice packs, rest...I have done the injections, endoscopic surgery, vicodin, savilla, tylonel, alieve, etc...I have tried it all but nothing seems to work. I have orders to go in for more PT water and to see a Reumatologist soon.
Aren't we a 'group'? emoticon LOL

Welcome to SP and feel free to ask questions and to share what you know as that is how all of us learn.

I am waiting for a total hip replacement and had my back fused in May 2010. We all deal with different surgeries or pains and so feel free to bitch and moan anytime.

I am allergice to Tramadol and so have Napraxin for arthritis in my hands to keep them working. Aleve does not touch my pain but 8 hour Tylenol does.

Cheers for a good day of blessings to each of you!!

I take 3 ibuprofen and an Ultram (tramadol) about every 6 hours. The ibuprofen is to keep the arthritic inflamation down and the tramadol for the pain. Unfortunately the pain never totally goes away but I've had it for so long (1999) I've learned to tolerate it. On the really bad days I just suffer since I can't take any more than I am now without going to morphine. That will come eventually but I'm postponing the inevitable as long as I can. Ain't life GRAND?!?!?!?

BTW, I'm new to SP and to here. Sounds like I'm in the right place! emoticon
