Yes I agree stress makes me hurt even worse. I am very stressed right now, due to I broke my foot. Then I tripped on my crutches and bruised my other leg really bad. Its been raining here on the east coast, and I don't care what 'science' says....rain makes me hurt all over. I can tell its raining even with out looking outside or hearing the weather.

I hope all of us with pain enjoy this Thanksgiving the best we can. Everyone is in my prayers. emoticon

I think we can all agree that stress is a bad thing, esp when you have pain issues. When I get totally stressed I can't function.

Absolutely! I've had 2 spinal fusions and need a 3rd one, but there is no way I will EVER have another back surgery. I also have fibromyalgia and I have limited mobility with these issues. However, I push myself through the pain on a daily basis and exercise as much as the pain will allow. I've tried narcotics, TENS, chiropractor, pain patches, heating pads, ice packs, epson salt soaks, steroid injections, etc. I have found that the more stress I'm under, the more intense my pain.

When I did 12 hour nurse shifts, the stress of the job, and the 20 mile walks each night on cement floors, after my 3 nights work, it would take me 2 to 3 days to get back to normal, then only one good day, then back to work to do it all over again. I'm glad I retired. Chronic pain is enough to keep me busy every day just dealing with it.

ILIE, kitchen work is also very heavy and demanding and I wouldn't blame you for looking for a different job, my mom did grammar school kitchen work until she retired at 64. BUT she never had chronic pain issues either. She was quite strong and never seemed to get tired out!! I don't know how she did it either. She was not slim, but not very overweight either. Maybe 15 or 20 lbs over....SHe is 86 and STILL going strong, but a bit forgetful.

Absolutely! It's one of the reasons why I'm having to look for a new job. Being on my feet, all day, in a very busy kitchen just doesn't work out. Each shift equals a day of rest for my back and knees.

Stress does make everything worse. Not too much of a problem right now. I do wish I could sleep through the night. I wake about every two hours to go to the bathroom often with hot flashes as well. Have to cool off before I can go back to sleep, so usually awake longer than I want. I think from the scan of my lower back that is most likely a permanent problem for me. I think it makes me a little paranoid to be sleep deprived. It's been going on for at least twenty years now, since my car accident. That's a long time to not get enough sleep.

John, I'm with you on the sleep issues. Woke up at 5am, went to sleep at midnight or so, and I got up this morning, so stressed yet unable to lay back down and sleep. So after 2 hours of that, I made coffee and just decided to stay up. I'll end up napping sometime today. I'm sure of that. Last night I did 15 min on treadmill, and I am sore all over this morning, slept through my 3am pill, and now I am hurting even worse. I have some anxiety, I know if I did some walking it would lessen, but I am already sore. Some days I am just so sore all over, other days not at all. I cannot figure out what to do. I need to go to the gym and just do what I can, esp strengthen my legs and back. It's just too much to bear right now. I am so exhausted too, I feel like I am sleepwalking. It's frustrating and I just cannot seem to get a handle of day to day life anymore. One day I'm up and at em, the next day not at all. Oh, to be young again. I have so many aches and pain from my 4 years of no exercise at all, that was after I hurt my back and neck. Of course I had major depression as well. I am not really depressed anymore. I just hurt all over most every day. This morning was the worst day in a long time.
I think this was a vent for me.........I need more sleep.........UGH!!
But, life is still good..........

Me too, except for the classes, lol. The stress and anxiety keep me from getting 2 hours of sleep at a time. I have to wake up at 11,3,5,and finally either 5 or 6AM. No wonder I'm exhausted. John

Thank you Miss, I am okay if I take the Tramadol and Baclofen or the Vicadin (alone) I function fine. Which is good since I need to work, I do not take the Oxy while at work. I can take the Vicadin and Baclofen and work but if I take them all then I sleep usually, I took them several times yesterday and did not sleep at all.
They do not take the pain away but it takes the edge off of it but if I take them all at one time then I do get woozy and have a hard time walking around.
I always take the Gabapentin 3 times a day usually at meal time so I remember to take it.
I am here for anyone who needs me.
I am thinking maybe it is surgery time.

LORAC,
I have nearly the same issues as you, I was only taking Vicodin every eight hours, but I recently dropped it to every twelve hours. I find that the pills make me sleep a lot too, also makes me want to lay in bed a LOT. Like today, I will only have been out of bed 4 hours, then it is bedtime again. Not good. I find that my mind is clearer with less Vicodin, but then I have pain, but I am learning to live with it, because I NEED to have my brain working. I am hoping that I will have a bit less depression taking it only every twelve hours. I will be talking to my MD about that.
The bad thing about the pain meds such as those you are taking can and does make you want to sleep a lot. I don't know what is worse, taking the strong painkillers, or being in bed sleeping too much. For me, the bad is being in bed too much which is not good for the heart and circulation. My heart is already in a weakened state, and I have to start doing cardio exercise to help strengthen my heart again.
Keep posting! We're here for you.

Last night after my walk and yoga, I got pain and after my shower I took my pills, I took all the pills and slept from about 8 till 11 got up wobbled around and then went back to be at 130 am nad slept till about 700am then took my pills and slept till 930 and have been up but took my pills twice.

Yes yes yes stress affects me big time! I too have muscle spasms but have not figured out what causes them....they are so severe they take my breath away...thank goodness they are not frequent. I have fibromyalgia and have had back surgery (C5-6) fusion. My pain levels go way up when I am stressed.

We have bought a house and should close this week so we are packing. I have been seeing an acupuncturist for two weeks, and I had trigger points and ablasion several weeks ago. My first ablasion I had good results for several months. This time after just a few weeks I am in pain again. I work full time and go to school, school is out right now but even though I do not feel stress maybe I have it. I am seeing a therapist through the VA since my back disingration is from an ingury in the military.

I hope your dog is better.

Stress DEFINITELY makes the pain worse, and can actually trigger the pain in the first place. Part of this is because when you are stressed to tend to tighten your muscles - clench your jaw and end up with a headache, suffer shoulder/neck pain, suffer pain from lower down :-(

Psychologists actually treat people suffering with chronic pain, because they teach relaxation techniques.

I hope your pooch doesn't get sick again. It must have been quite something :-(

If I get really stressed out my back will go into these horrible spasms. Like tonight my dog got really sick and I was super super worried as of what it all involved (he is fine now). Within minutes I was having back spasms super bad!

There have been times when it gets so bad I have to go sit or even lay down. Tonight I had to take extra meds and go lay down for a bit.

Then there are times when the stress is not due to a "emergency" type situation but general life stress and my back still reacts by me being in a higher level of pain. And/or my pain levels can go up more easily when I am stressed for a longer period of time.

How does stress effect you & how do you handle it?
