I have psoriatic arthritis and I was just diagnosed with DDD and adult scoliosis. I have had my physical therapy evaluation and will be attending my first actual session tonight. My therapist advised that I find a place to swim as often as possible. She said that swimming is the best exercise for both DDD and lumbar pain. My therapy will consist of both exercise and swimming. My Dr. gave me a TENS unit and a traction device for home use, and the therapist will show me how to use them properly. Maybe I can share some of the things she will be teaching me along the way. She did tell me it was okay to do yoga as long as I avoided any twisting motions. She also said that many hotels will allow people to pay a monthly fee to use their indoor pools for medical reasons. I called our local Hampton Inn and they charge $20 a month. Anyway, I'll be glad to share any new things in learn in therapy.

My husband today was confirmed that he has this painful health problem. He was given one month's worth of medication and today the doctor renewed it for only 30 more days. During that time he will be undergoing a bone scan. He also suffers from sciatica. The doctor did confirm that although physical therapy is an option, the disease will only get worse. Our daughter has psoriatic arthritis and she and her dad kid each other that they will be racing each other in their motorized wheelchairs lol. Gotta keep it light or life would get so depressing.
It would strike me that if your doctor says no walking or running, hee probably doesn't want you loading your spine. From that statement, I'd guess you should use a stationary bike. But I really do believe that you should try to get a PT consult even if just for a 1-2 visits to lay out safe exercising.
I would ask your doctor to send you to physical therapy so you can learn to exercise safely and correctly. You can't read his mind and he does not sound too helpful.......so ask to be referred. Good Luck!!
I am new to this team, but was just wondering what exercise is best for DDD, the stationary bike, steps? My doctor said no walking or running! ahh come on I am on my feet all day at work, and once I sit down I am done and can barely walk...... Can anyone help me with info of whats really better with DDD? thanks Deb
