I love the arrival of March. I know the worst of winter is over, and warmer weather is right around the corner.

Happy anniversary! I am also celebrating eight years this year although I have some months left before the date... it is amazing to have all these years, could never imagine that when I went to AA.

Congrats on your AA birthday. You are an inspiration. I look forward to living long enough to have 36 years sober. I have 8 years today. I know a lot if people with February sober dates.

I had my last drink 36 years ago tonite, right about now. Back then there were 3 meetings a week in my town and two in each of the two towns nearby. All were at 8:30 at night, and lasted as long as it took for everyone to speak. And then we all went out for coffee at Friendly's. I used to get home at about 11 or 11:30, and get up at 5:30 to go to work the next day. I can't even imagine it now, but I am grateful every day I had the energy to get sober when I did. I was 27, and that was the youngest one at most meetings. We were pretty close back then; insurance didn't pay for rehab so AA was it. I had to lean on women who were so OLD! Now I am older than most of them were then. What an amazing program!!

Thanks for posting steph, you remind me that by focusing on to be the best me I can, it will be allright.

Visited my alcoholic nephew yesterday on his birthday, he has had so bad scares from not taking care of himself, being in the hospital and having a lot of pains. He is in a wheelchair from driving drunk at 18, now he is 39 and could have a great life if he chose to. But thinking of him going to AA I realised that three out of five groups in the both cities that surrounds us he can΄t attend because they are not reachable for a wheelchair. But there are two places and together they host four meetings a week.

My mother just found out her beau has terminal cancer. They are so much in love and so lucky to have found each other. It makes me very sad. I was able to talk to her, use what I have learned in AA, and actually had her laughing by the end of our phone conversation. Went out an bought her a little gift which I will mail today. My job here is to be the best daughter I can be. I know I am not responsible for how she handles this, ie drinking, but I have so much compassion for her pain.

I had a long weekend. It was Family Day here in Ontario, and there are programs everywhere filled with things for families to do together. I managed to get DH to go snowshoeing with me, and he really enjoyed it. There is a trail right near our house that goes up and down hills through the woods. Beautiful. I am grateful to be sober to enjoy it.

My addiction was red wine - one af the big alarms was that when I worried about my consumption I thought about starting to drink booze instead - that, I did not particulary like! So sick. As for colds I thought that brandy, hot water and honey was a good method for stopping calls, never had any real evidence that it worked. Today΄s cure is extract from echinacea purpurosa.

You girls are hilarious! I bet the bourbon manufacturers felt the pain when we all stopped drinking!!! I saw the bottom of a warehouse full of bottles.....Quart size was my choice too.

Oh Lord, Thank you for delivering us from evil and giving us a life of purpose, fun, and love.

Thank you, ladies, for reminding me to be grateful tonight.

I remember once trying to puzzle out if half a fifth of bourbon was a tenth. I'm sure I ended up drinking the whole thing anyway.

I was a Kentucky bourbon drinker, too, although once I got up to a quart a day it didn't matter what the brand was. I never drank in metric. A quart was a quart and a fifth was a fifth.

I'm recovering from the flu right now. I remember when the advice to drink plenty of fluids was an excuse to have brandy for it's "medicinal" benefits. Tea with lemon and a bit of honey is working for me today.

Another thing I don΄t have to think about at all... emoticon

This is from an article in "health news":

"Preliminary research on the use of different mixers, such as juice, soda or diet soda, suggests that diet soda might increase breath alcohol content more than higher calorie sugary beverages.

"The key thing is to be aware of this phenomenon," said study lead author Cecile Marczinski, an assistant professor in the department of psychological science at Northern Kentucky University in Highland Heights.

"People tend to think that cutting calories is important, but when you're drinking alcohol, calories help slow down the release of alcohol to your liver and brain," Marczinski said."

I am not in my best mood these days, I don΄t know what is bringing me down, probably that I have a difficult letter to write to the tax people and am postponing it, and I can feel that I am more overweight than ever... and when I think of giving up soberness and drinking wine in this modd I am really grateful that I have not been drinking for eight years since that would really get me dpressed and self loathing if I drank also....

So grateful I found AA before I had irreversable damage.

Despite the year from hell, DH has 14 years today. His mother died of cancer, he was laid off, and didn't get to go on our trip, but stayed sober through it all.

Once you get to Korsakoff's, it isn't denial anymore. They really BELIEVE it. Old people metabolize alcohol differently, a little goes a longer way. Mom swears she drinks one glass of wine a day. We show her the empty bottles, add up the amount, and she no longer has the mental ability to see that 175 oz divided by 7 days is not 5oz. We could put her on a lie detector and it would show she is telling the truth. She is beyond the ability to know reality. The damage is irreversible.

My mother is a long time alcoholic who is in denial, as well. She is only 70, and has not suffered too much from her drinking. She doesn't drink large quantities, but I can tell over the phone if she has had a sip of a drink. People like her should hear the horror stories of what happens with chronic alcohol use, even at lower levels. Her alcoholism bothers me, but there is nothing I can do. She certainly downplays the amount she drinks when she is around me.

Wet brain is Korsakoff's Syndrome. When I googled wet brain I got Wernicke-Korsakoff, two syndromes together. It's a vitamin B1 (thiamine) deficiency, something according to my son the dietician, is very rare in western cultures. It can be caused by anorexia or bulimia, certain chemotherapy drugs, AIDS, and occasionally in pregnant women who are so ill they cannot keep food down for many months. The other 99% are chronic alcohol abusers. Alcoholics tend to get most of their calories from alcohol (Mom certainly does), so there is little B1 ingestion. But it also affects the way B1 is absorbed and used by the body, so pill supplements don't help much if she keeps drinking. Which she will. Once dementia sets in, all reason is gone.

Isi it maybe Korsakoffs disease? I can΄t find any translation for "wet brain" Korsacoffs disease is caused by long insuffiency of B12 due to drinking.and seems to have the symptoms you describe.

Good morning everyone. I was at a meeting yesterday where a man was telling me that his uncle had a wet brain. It's nice to be able to talk about the terrible effects of drinking with people who know, and who can be grateful that it won't happen to us. I guess what amazes me is how many years I knew that she drank too much, but never really saw it as alcoholism. I went from a drink every 6 months to one quart a day in about 4 years, so her long slow progression went below my radar.

This is awful - as I have reached top level for spark points I lost some of the motivation for doing my spark "chores" every day, like visiting teams and writing on message boards as a daily habit. I still think it is a good habit and I do really want to stay in connection with apsek people as I have found so man interesting, motivating and inspiring people here... so a little late but nevertheless, the february thread is on the go.

Nell I don΄t know what your mothers symptoms are in translation, but I understand that she is blessed to have a daughter who gave up drinking and can be there for her! AND you made me grateful for giving up drinking because that will make my relation to my daughter better through the years to come... wish I could give up food compulsion as well.
