I agree with Jaye (actually I have met Jaye) about non-AAs at AA meetings. As long as they respect AA and share about recovery in general, or from alcohol, but not drugs, they are welcome in our local meetings. I believe that anyone seeking recovery has the right to find it and when there is no NA, etc AA does the trick. The principles of 12 Step programs are the same everywhere.

I'm new to this team so a bit behind the 8 ball, but I wanted to weigh in on the question of NA's attending AA as it is an ever growing issue in our neck of the woods. Where I live (Muskoka, Canada) there are no NA meetings and the nearest meetings haven't to many oldtimers - about 5 years max. We do get NA's at our meetings but they also have a desire to not drink. Some of them introduce themselves as "alcoholic/addicts" and it is my feeling that in qualifying and sharing at an AA meeting we stick to our issues with alcohol, that just using "alcoholic" in introductions keeps us all focused on our primary purpose. I have many challenges in my life that I apply the principles of AA to, but when it comes to AA, this is/was the only place I found that helped me to not drink. It is important for me to remember why I am there and how it saved(s) my life. In turn, it is my responsibility to share what was so freely given to me - Help to not drink!

Hi there,

I'd suggest go ahead and check out AA too. For some reason (I think perhaps time), AA tends to still be a stronger program most places. California is always ahead of the game. Perhaps in AA you'll find other addicts that can suggest some better NA meetings. Perhaps you can help make NA stronger in your new area. At any rate, you are certainly welcome here.

Welcome, almost 2 years for alcohol, a bit more than 5 for "other substances",unfortunately when I gave up one I found the other. I'm not sure what we have here would count as a meeting! It is a great group of like minded people though...di

Hi. You mentioned in your posts more than once that you like to get to a good AA meeting. I am a member of NA but when I moved here from California the recovery was almost non existant. No one could put any time together and if they had a year or two they weren't working with a sponsor. Of course, everyone thought I was trying to make this town a little California. They were very resistant. So, I eventually became powerless and now after 1 year there is finally one meeting a week that is worth driving to (with gas at 4.+ per gallon and me living 20 miles from town). It's been suggested that I go to the AA meetings here and I havn't gone yet. If there were a recovering addicts group I would have joined that but I need to be where the recovery is and it looks like it might be here. I have been clean 14 years and I think I will have to make a trip to California to get California recovery. Unless, of course, I can add Spark posts on Recovering Alcoholics and count them as meetings. How long have you been sober?

I am open to the blessings of the Universe.

Mary, I don't get squirrely either and I only make bi monthly meetings for the most part, HOWEVER, i've been firmly planted on some strange "pink cloud" for a very long time now and believe me I know that could disappear any day. When that happens i'm betting I find my way to a few more meetings; still the weird thing for me is I NEVER think of booze unless i've just BEEN to a meeting. Very disconcerting...di

Hello all - thanks for the feedback.
Cynd - I'm glad you don't get squirrelly (ps. because you're making meetings regularly - that's the trick!)
Mary - I agree about considering it a meeting whenever you're with other alcoholics - thankfully, most of my friends are in recovery so when I walk with them we do consider that a meeting... still, nothing takes the place of a room full of sober AA people, sharing experience strength & hope with newcomers!

Have a great day everyone... the sun is shining here in NJ and it's supposed to be 80 degrees this afternoon (a good day to play hookey from work ... I'm overdue!)

MY VERY 1ST AA-MEETING WAS AUGUST 8TH,2007. MY DOCTOR(S),SAID IN THE VERY BEGINNING THAT I ATTEND 6 MONTHS OF MEETINGS AND NEVER DRINK TO BE PUT ON THE LIVER TRANSPLANT LIST. WELL I DID THAT ALL READY, BUT THERE'S MORE TO IT. ONE OF MY DOCTOR'S SAID THAT THE PEOPLE AT THEIR WORST...GET THE ORGANS FIRST. WELL I'D RATHER EATING & LIVING RIGHT...NOT STARING AT DEATH IN MY FACE. IF I DON'T HAVE TO GET A LIVER...FINE WITH ME. I WANT TO KEEP MINE. SO ENOUGH ABOUT THAT...IT WILL BE WEEK #44...OF ONCE A WEEK MEETINGS. AA IS ALSO AT THE TOP FOR ME. WHEN MY HUBBY & I ARE PLANNING A MINI TRIP...I GO TO A MEETING BEFORE WE GO, OR RIGHT AFTER WE GET BACK. I READ ANOTHER SAYING.....MY WORST DAY IN SOBRIETY, IS BETTER THAN MY BEST DAY DRUNK. OH BY THE WAY MARY, I DON'T GET SQUIRRELY. EVERYONE HAVE A GREAT SUNDAY.C..... emoticon

Meetings are exercise for me. I know I have to balance. But I have to put AA at the top of that. Sometimes I'll meet a sober friend to walk. I consider all activities with other alcoholics meetings of sort. If I don't do 3 a week - I get a little squirrely. I'm pretty squirrelly now - been caring for a sick father in law and haven't been to a meeting in almost a week. Also been only around Earth people. Have been exercising but it isn't the same for me. Anybody else get squirrely?? emoticon

Mary - sometimes you have to choose and meeting and other times you have to choose working out. its not always possible to fit everything in and still feel upright, at least for me. i have to choose my battle for that day and then feel accomplished. one day at a time, but also one thing at a time. i'm better off not feeling burned out and getting less done than trying to fit everything in.

I'm finding it difficult to get to meetings lately because I'm outside walking - getting my exercise that I need to get back on track (I've gained almost all my weight back since last year - UGH!) It's tough to get home from work, make dinner, take a walk, then make a meeting! Somehow, I've gotta make it all work...

I need a meeting! Haven't been to one since LAST Friday (5/16) -- doing lots of other stuff, attending bible study/fellowship meetings, and living a sober life - BUT, NOTHING takes the place of a good AA meeting!

I'm babysitting the grandkiddies tonight, and will definitely make a meeting tomorrow night!

JUST FOR TODAY: Some simple words to live by (from Al-Anon, but just as appropriate for us "drunks"):

Just for today: I will try to live through this day only, and not tackle all my problems at once.
I can do something for twelve hours that would appall me if I felt that I had to keep it up for a lifetime.

Just for today: I will be happy. This assume to be true what Abraham Lincoln said, *Most folks are as happy as they make up their minds to be.*

Just for today: I will adjust myself to what is,
and not try to adjust everything to my own desires. I will Take my *luck* as it comes, and fit myself into it

Just for today:I will try to strengthen my mind. I will study. I will not be a mental loafer. I will read something that requires effort, thought and concentration.

Just for today: I will exercise my soul in three ways: it will do somebody a good turn and not get found out; if anybody know of it, it will not count. I will do at least two things I don't want to do-- just for exercise. I will not show anyone that my feelings are hurt: they may be hurt but today I will not show it.

Just for today: I will be agreeable. I will look as well as I can, dress becomingly, keep my voice
low,be courteous,criticize not one bit. I won't find
fault with anything, nor try to improve or regulate
anybody else but myself.

Just for today: I will have a program.
I may not follow it exactly, but I will have it.
I will save myself from two pests: Hurry and Indecision.

Just for today: I will have a quiet half
hour all by myself, and relax. During this half hour, sometime I will try to get a better perspective of my life.

Just for today: I will be un-afraid.
Especially I will not be afraid to enjoy what
is beautiful, and to believe that as I give to the
world, so the world will give back to me.

Karen - take advantage of having people talk to you when you feel like drinking. AND take advantage of talking *yourself* out of drinking. I'm sure you have memories of how tough drinking can be. And on the flip side, you have thing in your life you want to change or to have happen. When I feel desperate about drinking, I remember the terrible things that happened and how ashamed I felt, and I think about the things I want in my life that I can't have with alcohol. And even if I can't feel solid about staying with it forever, I can just stay where I am and not reach for the bottle. And that's enough for right then, until I feel better. Hope this helps.

good job pinky, yeah the first meeting is normaly scary, but it ended up like it was for u, i was lucky it was a small meeting, but i was like u i did actually have a drink before i went, they was all fine with that. they gave me numbers aswell. i came out of there positive for the first time ever about my drinking. though saying that it took 6 weeks for me to go sober, but i was able to cut down my drink to 2-3 or somtimes 1 a week. so to me that was a good start. even though i was still drinking they still gave me encouragment and that.

good luck to u pinky, if u ever need any help or what not, u can allways email me or pm me or leave a message on my page. i am now 42 days sober :)
