From the Dr. Oz show today: Foods that reduce the risk of cancer: Oolong tea (82%) for ovarian cancer, coffee cuts off the blood supply in liver cancer, and peaches for breast cancer. For more details, there is a video of that episode on his website. Looks like word is getting around that "food is medicine and medicine is food." I do believe that we are hungry to hear that. Not good ----but today I learned I have a "prolapsed rectum"that will require surgery.
They will call to set up the appointment soon.
I may even beat DH to the surgery he may have on the 31st if his kidney stone fails to pass before then!

I know if I posted this somewhere here before, if so, here it is again.

After doing LOTS and LOTS of research on making gluten-free bread in my bread machine, I have decided it is not reasonable and WAY too much for me to tackle. I do not have celiac disease, or sensitivity to gluten, but did have a sensitivity to wheat in my teens; however, I must have done something right in my life to be a healthy, clear-thinking, 87-year-old.

Gluten is blamed for inflammation in the brain as well as the body (according to Dr. David Perlmutter, Neurologist) and that is the culprit in dementia. I will continue to pursue a healthful lifestyle without going to extremes.

Hi Roberta -my version of my mom 'a bean soup is only a guess. The only thing that is for sure the same is my own cooked from scratch Great Northern Beans. I cook up onions, carrots, celery , and what ever else I have on hand and add to my already cooked beans with spices.
Probably never the same but always good .

Great! Roberta-I am looking forward to your sharing the soup recipes that you particularly like.
I too look back on my mothers cooking fondly. And because I was a "depression "
child I particularly remember having wonderful Great northern Bean soup. We kids got plenty of protein and fiber. That is what I attribute my good health. In fact it is still my favorite soup. I have some in the fridge right now from the beans I soaked 2 days ago and cooked up yesterday.
What fun that you will be using your bread machine too. I don't have one here in a Texas but DD does back home in the north that we use. Let me know how that goes.

The most important book I have read (besides Psycho-Cybernetics) is "Think Slim-Be Slim. A 21-day plan for 'mental dieting' that can give you perfect weight control -- forever, " by Elsye Birkinshaw. I started reading it again and it is just as current today as it was in 1976. I have also been remembering Mother's cooking from my childhood. Such good foods. Most of her recipes were in her memory and not on paper, unfortunately. I was sick a lot as a child, and I remember asking for buttermilk and chicken soup. Could that be why I ended up as an adult with a super immune system. ;-)

I will be doing more cooking -- soups and stews in particular. I dug out my bread machine to have home-made bread almost as good as my Mother's.

It is nice to know there are some forms of sugar that actually have NUTRITOUS benefits isn't it?
The only fats I try to get in to my diet is AVACADOS for the omega 3's. Had some on our
Homemade version of Subways Veggue Delight 6" sub tonight.

It is best to avoid sugars, simple carbs, and "manufactured" fats.  Butter and Olive Oil are the best.  Avoid cottonseed oil, soy bean oil, margarine, Crisco, and palm oil.  High blood sugar shrinks one's brain, among other things.  Honey has lots of benefits, maple syrup is OK.  

Fats do not make us fat or give us heart problems. It is sugar and simple carbohydrates. We need good fats and complex carbohydrates to stay healthy. But there are healthful sugars:

-----Honey--it is full of essential nutrients, 181 different bioactive compounds, helps fight seasonal allergies, has strong antimicrobial properties (to fight even MRSA). Has been used in dressings to fight infections.

-----Maple Syrup--pure maple syrup contains minerals such as manganese, zinc, calcium, iron, and antioxidants. A serving of maple syrup contains about the same antioxidant capacity as a serving of strawberries.

-----Blackstrap Molasses--contains Vitamin B12, magnesium, manganese, iron, calcium, copper, and selenium. A tablespoon of molasses has as much iron as a chicken breast.

Have you heard that Alzheimer is now being called the Type 3 Diabetes? That sugar and carbs cause the brain to SHRINK! OMG that is a great motivator for me to bypass the NO-NOs at the grocery store! ! !

It is according to to where you are located . We are in central TEXAS Which is normally much milder than northern. When frost threatens DH covers with rugs . :)

No, the kale seeds are for our winter TEXAS. garden here . Kale does well in cold temps.
We do have to cover our garden when we have a frost advisory but kale can even take a little frost.

We had a brutal wind storm a few days ago--lots of damage, and hundreds of thousands of us without power. I felt alone and isolated, and I climbed into bed fully dressed just to keep warm. Also took my old scanner with me to listen to what was going on in our area--lots of trees down on power lines, and FIRES. What I learned was that I am not as prepared for emergencies as I thought! I did have a fridge full of food, this time.

As soon as the power came back I ordered a small, battery-operated TV. So if there is a next time, I will feel more in touch with the World. I will stock up on food and drink that do not need refrigeration or cooking, batteries for flashlights and electronics. Luckily, my cell phone was charged up, and I had a backup charger (battery) if needed. SO, this week I will be out and about gathering supplies, and doing laundry, and other catch-up home chores in order to be well prepared for whatever I have to face.

We learned we are truly blessed to have followed a predominately vegetarian diet the last 10 years. We called on old friends in a nursing home today who were in very bad shape health wise. I am so happy they are being well cared for.though.
