Yay! Roberta. I hope to join you soon. Felt 100% better today- no headache.
I will start out slowly tomorrow and gradually add back more steps.
My illness has been a blessing in disguise as I finally got to read Lisa Wingate books. On my 3rd one now. When I start one I can't put it down til its finished.
DD has kept me well fed with delicious homemade from scratch soups-each one better than the last. And has done all the rest of jobs too. Including running errands and getting me to doctor and DH to his hardware, etc:)
Keep up the good work. Remember as you discovered it improves our brains too:)!

Just finished 30 minutes on the bike, mostly at 15 mph, with 4 sprints at 20 mph. I will post steps tomorrow. emoticon Roberta

It is good that you are feeling better this morning. These viruses really test our immune systems, and perhaps that make us stronger when a new one comes along. BTW, Dr. Fuhrman was consulted in a video of an Australian businessman, Joe, in a juice-fasting diet. My daughter sent a link to the 90-min video of his journey. I copied his recipes to use in my smoothies.

I still experiencing great fatigue/exhaustion, and finally am seeking medical help with a new doctor on the 23rd. In the meantime, I am restructuring my diet and daily routines in a desperate move to help myself, too.

Thanks Roberta. No extra steps for me yet! Went to doctor yesterday. I have a viral cold-so. no antibiotics. My symptoms turned to cough and wheezing. He prescribed a inhaler . Never had one before and like a little uncoordinated kid I am still learning how to use it!! I can't seem to do 2 things at same time. ( can't scratch my head and rub my stomach at same time:) will try again at 11:00. emoticon I feel much better today-headache gone.

I was sick yesterday with bowel problems. No extra exercise.

Today feeling good. Decided to bake -DD'S Amazing Maple Syrup OLDFASHIONED Oat- cookies. We lowered the amount of sugar and it is reflected in this recipe. I may make it again using SPLENDA.for diabetic friends. They are so good they would make a healthy breakfast:)

I posted the recipe on our "Chatting Away" forum topic.

Finished my delightful book called "TEXAS Cooking" by Lisa Wingate.
Now DH us reading it. She is a TEXAS writer and is mentioning roads and towns near us . He got a kick out of that!

This is exciting news, Pat. I was up until after Midnight last night--just could not put the book down. I read the first three chapters, then scanned parts of the book to get to the food list, menus, and recipes and will go back to the beginning to absorb more of the information. I don't know if I can fast on water for an entire day, but am willing to do what I can--after all, this was written for the younger bunch. BUT, to quote someone: "What's age got to do with it?" Yes, there is much new data from studies done by Neuroscientists these days. The book I am reading by Rudolph E. Tanzi , PH.D. And head of the Alzheimer's research at Harvard would agree.
He says "the bottom line for now is that as we age , key areas of the brain involved in memory and learning continue to produce new nerve cells, and that this process can be stimulated
by physical exercise , mentally stimulating activities ( like reading) and social connectedness."
And "by choosing to exercise every day , you can increase the number of new nerve cells, just as you actively seek to learn new things"
Enjoy your journey.
I have read the books, but just now getting to the several in depth videos zeroing in on specific areas. Plan to reread the book once I get through the videos.

This book by Perlmutter, "Grain Brain," has outstanding scientific information on the brain: Aerobic exercise exercises the genes and causes them to grow more neurons! The brain changes itself just like other parts of the body. Aerobic exercise improves longevity and growth hormones. We can turn genes on or off by what we do--with exercise and the right foods. Just blows me away! It was only $14.99 at COSTCO. So much more in this book than his PBS show. If I ever had motivation to exercise, THIS IS IT! Whew! I am SO REVVED UP TO GET GOING. He suggests some blood tests to be done, which I will take to my doctor's appointment on April 23. The brain is plastic not static as we were led to believe. So much new information coming out with these new studies. Every cell in our bodies regenerates itself if we know what to do, what genes to turn on or off. Amazing! THE BRAIN CHANGES ITSELF! I did very well yesterday with almost 8000 steps but nothing extra today. Took Trip out
On the road viewing TEXAS wild flowers-Bluebonbets, Indian Paintbrush, daisies , etc..
Had lunch at next town. Brought most home. Servings are so large we could eat for a week with one restaurant meal.:)

I added to my purposeful walking today. Did 2 hours of walking in house. Couldn't even use the porch or deck today. Rainy and cold outside!
Reached 6500 steps. By 5:30.
Now watching the NCAA basketball playoffs- Notre Dame is winning over Maryland women.
Now most likely will play against UCONN on Tues.
Also looking forward to seeing second episode of Me. Selfridge tonight.
Tomorrow I will add 500 more steps to my plan:). I will get there-yet!!

By last evening, all the kitchen appliances and supplies were cleared off the shelving. Did not keep track of the time. Pedometer reading for yesterday was 7,156. The two tenants will be here this morning about 10:30 to move the shelving. All will be ready for the plumber to install the new water heater on Monday, then I have the domestic exercise fun of putting everything back. emoticon Roberta

You are way ahead of me , Roberta! You are my inspiration to do better.
Today I reached 5600 something steps and lit up 6 lights on my activity tracker.
My goal is to add 500 steps a day til I am back to 10,000 steps and fully glow lites!
Did lots of purposeful walking, plus 2 loads of clothes. Dishes and kitchen ckean up, swept floors, etc.
keep up your good job of cleaning out shelves etc.

Good for you, Roberta! Isn't a switch that we now value our house chores , etc,
For the exercise it gives us? Fun! We know- The more we move, the longer we can!
I don't have as much to do on that dept. now that DD Is here.
But still do all our personal laundry, and while DD prepares the meals, I insist on doing the dishes and kitchen clean up. !! She is a great cook so now we I have a new problem. Not shedding any weight. Will try to work on that!!

Did a lot yesterday: 7 loads of laundry (3+ hrs to sort, wash, dry, put away); unloaded pantry shelves (? min most of afternoon and evening) to move appliances and other items so plumber could replace water heater on Monday. Pedometer reading for yesterday was 10,119 steps.

Started back my "purposely walking" indoors today.
Did 50 minutes to reach my 90 minute goal. Plan to add 20 minutes every day til reach 10,000 steps again .

I DID--FINALLY! Got in 6921 steps on the pedometer and 19 minutes of cardio (bike 15 and rebounder 4). I know--it isn't much, but it is a start.

Still struggling, Pat. This digestive upset is waning, thank goodness! I just strapped on the pedometer--a little late at 10:25, but that is OK--I just have to remember to put it on every day. My chronic problem is sleep deprivation. If I can push myself to start exercising again, that should help. I long to be active. I enjoy being active. I hunger to learn new things and enjoy new activities. My body doesn't always agree with what my mind want to do. emoticon

I ordered a gluten-free cookbook from ATK and one for my bread machine. Also, by adding the supplement, DHA, and aerobic exercise my brain will grow more cells. According to Dr. Perlmutter, that is possible.

I would never think of wearing that activity monitor to bed, but obviously it works. I did order it, but had to return it when it kept knocking out my phone.

It is SO GOOD to have you back posting again. Missed you, girl! Hugs, Roberta

I am trying to get back to my purposely walking program. Will work up gradually to what I had reached before.
Yesterday 30 minute walk in house.plan to add 10 minutes a day to that when I can.
Almost had panic attach when I discovered my Spark Activity Tracker was missing. Finally found it at bedtime. It was fastened to my pajama top.!! WHEW!

Reached my over10,000 steps again yesterday and again today.
It helps too that my Activity tracker is recording while I do my daily chores and at least one ---extra chore.
Thursday-cleaned out and organized my clothes closet
FRI. Cleaned fridge
Sat. Clothes washed , dried and put away-one item at a time -to reach more steps-also swept and spray mopped hard floors,
Today -Sunday-made special breakfast for DH-blueberry pancakes with maple syrup.
I set timer to rest 10 minutes-every 60 minutes-TIL I reach 10,000 steps.with my indoor and outdoor deck walking. Time flies when you are Having ' fun :)

Again today-60 min. Walk in AM and again 60 min. Walk in PM.
I include simple house chores along the way. I use to do whole main floor including hallway, bathroom and bedrooms but find it's easier to just circle the Kitchen, dining room and living room as it is more of a straight shot. Too many turns in the bath and bedrooms.

I just checked back to Jan 1st and I said I was starting an indoor walking program
I did 2 minutes at a time that day. And intended to add minutes each day-this I have done!
Today I did 2 -60 minute indoor walkings and almost reached my 10.000 steps ( 9500)!

WOW! What a challenging Christmas! Glad to hear everyone is OK now.

Yesterday, although I was ready to call 911, I did get in 20 min. on the bike and 2 on the rebounder, then the pedometer registered 7180 steps. The scale hit a new low this morning. (Evidently, I have a mild case of the "flu" -- still feel a little weak and wobbly -- probably caught from a visitor who had it.)

Hi Roberta- we had a wonderful CHRISTMAS celebration INSPITE of problems.
We have been super busy around here--since, disinfecting the house --since our DD who had major flu problems while here as Christmas guest-got over it and arrived home safely -thank you GOD.
Not only was DD sick but POOCHIE as well-throwing --up on couch and area rug:).
So we rented carpet rug cleaner from hardware- cleaned area rug and back door and front door rug mats plus rug from Precious cage.
Also I cleaned leather couches and DH cleaned hardwood floors.
I washed all guest bedding's including bedspread.from sick daughters room.
We are now Squeaky clean again! :)

I am still getting my daily foot and leg massage. It is really making a difference in the circulation feelings in legs I think.because you asked-- The name of the product
That DGD gave me for CHRISTMAS is-ACURE-body Lotion,- distributed by Better Planet Brands. I am sure other brands may bring the same results.

Back to my walking plan. I find that it takes me 12 minutes
to lite up one lite on my activity tracker so I am now doing 12 minutes walking in house alternately with 12 minutes house chores ( including this Spark posting time) TIL I reach my goal. I have a timer on my cell phone so that is what I am using to keep myself accountable.
For me-it takes extreme measures to do just that.!

On food shopping days and Lady Bear stadium days it is easier to reach my walking goals.

I am glad you like your DR. FUHRMAN cookbook. Let me know what your favorites are.

Congratulations on the pedometer reading.

My legs are getting a daily massage now thanks to the firming organic body lotion my DGD gave me for CHRISTMAS :) love how much more alive my feet and legs feel already too!

Also I have started my new action walking program-2 minutes walking in house, 10 minutes house chores all morning. Plan to adds minutes daily to each walk TIL up to 10 minutes .
This my no excuses way to keep moving :)

Yesterday and this morning, I started out my day with my "bed exercises." Before getting up, I do leg exercises and in between do crunches. Yesterday I did 30 crunches and this morning 50. The amazing thing is that with just those two days, my abs feel smaller and I slept better last night and awoke this morning after a good night's sleep. More energy.

Yesterday's pedometer reading: 7990 steps. Amazing what a small amount of physical activity will do to help us feel better. I vow to make 2014 a very good year. emoticon emoticon Roberta

OH! BUMMER! I had to make several important calls this morning the first thing and into the afternoon, and completely forgot to put on my pedometer. I reached down this afternoon to see the numbers and to my surprise, it was not on my ankle! Talk about absent minded!

What wonderful news, Roberta.
My brothers all had and 2 left still suffer from diabetes .
One more reason for me to keep moving.
I decided to UP my daily goal on the tracker to 7000 steps now that I know I can do it.
so I reset my tracker goal.
.now rather than liting up at 4000 it has to be 7000 to lite up. Vand I made it tonight. emoticon I plan to always try to increase what I did the day before just a little.

DH and POOCHIE and Precious have all gone to bed and I am heading that way after Sparking a little.

Exercise is recommended to cure or relieve some unhealthy physical conditions (High BP, High Chol.). Next is good nutrition.
Then why do most of us ignore that advice???!!! My age is not an excuse!

emoticon Roberta! You are definitely back to your road to better health! Are you walking outside or in?

My day today was house bound again but actually got A lot accomplished.

Cleaned the fridge this morning , also emptied out my linen shelves in bathroom and put them back in much neater order.

This PM wrote notes on 8 to go CHRISTMAS cards. Did some personal grooming on nails, both hands and toes., Removing old polish . (Tomorrow I am pampering myself with a manicure and pedicure ) getting ready for CHRISTMAS.:)

Then this evening after dinner I started my indoor walking- the tracker posts it all on my I-pad.
95 min of walking, 219 calories burned, and 6848 steps. I feel stronger already. I could never have done that last week!

I have noticed that when my BP is high, my pulse is low. Must make exercise a priority. I have been lax lately because of my neck problem, but there are exercises I can do -- walking is the best, then pedal the bike, and just being more active in general. Reduce time on the computer.

I started wearing my pedometer again and logging steps even if they are no where near my goal. The thought behind this is to motivate me to be more active. It may take a while to get up to goal numbers. Yesterday's was only 3222. Will aim for 30 minutes on the bike today.

My Streak continues!

Day 5 completed successfully today.

This morning we spent delivering Meals on Wheels-I DIDN 't get much EXERSIZE myself there as I did all the driving and DH did the actual delivering to the door as he insists on doing.

So I had to make up for it at home this PM. POOCHIE and I walked the sidewalk in our own block several times.

Then this evening after dinner, Precious (our other dog) kept me company walking in the house until I reached my almost 5000 steps which lit up my tracker completely.

i changed my tracker to record my exercise minutes rather than my weight goal. I need to focus on fitness activities rather than on the scale. The scale is just fallout from activities. In golf, the end result depends on what you do to get the ball to the green -- proper stance, proper grip, proper swing, and how fast is your swing, and same thing on the green except add self-control. My focus needs to be on what I DO to get the scale to move to the right number.

SO . . . . the solution is simple: exercise like an athlete, eat the proper foods, and follow a routine of activity and sleep. Oh, yes, and have fun, be happy, enjoy.

Pat, much to my disappointment, I will return the Tracker to Spark tomorrow. As it turns out, it interfered with my house phone and cell phone, making them inoperable. I guess that is why the SyncPoint could not be detected--they just were not compatible. It did work for a few minutes when I had disconnected the phone and printer, but then when I reconnected the phone and printer, the SyncPoint went out. Roberta

Pat, the Tracker worked for a few minutes then went out again, and even though I removed two other appliances, nothing worked. It may be that the SyncPoint is not compatible with Apple OS X 10.9, since the requirements were up to 10.8. I can't deal with this any longer this evening. I am exhausted. It won't do any good to take it to the Apple Genius Bar as I can't take the printer and phone along. Looks like it is going to be returned. I REALLY wanted this to work, as the concept was so neat. Well, emoticon on turning on all the lights. Good going! I am proud of you. I just replaced the pedometer on the ankle belt with the Tracker -- so far it has registered 8 steps! emoticon The only place the dongle worked was on the chill pad back of my laptop. It will be interesting to see if it picks up the signal there or whether I have to take it off the strap and bring it to the dongle. Interesting how it registered so quickly. At 7:00 pm and every hour this evening. I will have to hustle to keep up with you. Hugs, Roberta

I am excited to report that I finally lit up the full circle of lights for the first time!! My extra walking in the house did the trick.!!!

FINALLY! EUREKA!!! I pulled all the plugs from laptop and chill pad, and tried one more time to install the dongle, and it WORKED! Now to remember how to use it. So back to the page.
