from UP WORDS by Max Lucado

The hero of heaven is God. Angels don’t worship mansions or glittering avenues. God is not the grand marshal of the parade; he is the parade! He’s not the main event; he’s the only event! His Broadway features a single stage and star: Himself. He hosts the only production and invites every living soul to attend.

At this very moment God issues invitations by the millions. He says, “Come, enjoy me forever.” Yet many people have no desire to do so. He speaks; they cover their ears. He commands; they scoff. They don’t want him telling them how to live. They regard his son as a joke and the cross as utter folly. They spend their lives telling God to leave them alone.

Jesus offers the invitation in Matthew 11:28: “Come to me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”

This morning I called Internal Revenue and found out they no longer send out the quarterly forms for estimated tax anymore. They told me where to find them online and I printed them out and got my check ready and mailed even though it is a few days early.
They want your money but they don't send the forms anymore. LOL
Didn't have to wait too long for someone to answer. Sometimes (at the wrong time of year) you can wait for eons twiddling your thumbs if you didn't have told hold your phone.

Well, the administrator or whoever he is from PT came this morning and decided to do three more weeks, twice a week of PT for my balance.
I sure do need it.
Everyone keep going while you can. I guess that is why Carol and Rick are always emoticon emoticon

Morning all,

Sunny and to be in the 80's today.

Exercise this morning then barn cleaning plus I have a truck full of hay to unload. and a few other things to do to fill my day.

T2K hang in there. Everyone takes a step backwards now and then. If for nothing else but to have a better look at what's ahead.

Have a great day all!

Morning all.
No rushing off to work today! I do have lots to do, for my town job and the pet parade Saturday, but I think I'll manage my time more easily today.

Scale looks okay this morning. I'd like it a bit lower but it is below goal, at least.

We've had a couple of turkeys in the yard off and on this week. First time I've seen them in a couple of months. The neighbor's daughter said yesterday a bear got their bird feeder. I would have thought they'd pulled them by now, but I guess some learn lessons the hard way.

T2K, don't worry about a gain. We all had them when on our journey to becoming KOPS. The body makes its own adjustments from time to time. You'll get back on track.

Well, off to exercise. Hope everyone has a great day.

Morning all.

Thanks Carol, Hopefully I can keep going in that direction. I've noticed the past couple of days I have voraciously hungry. Maybe it is because of all the work I have been doing around the house.

Today I have to take my truck into the body shop for an estimate. Then go get some hay. I still have some agility equipment to work on as well. And need to find a pneumatic hose for the piano. (I hope what I diagnosed is the problem.)

Suppose to hit 80 today so it will be a good day to be out.

Have a great day all!

Morning all.
Cloudy, cool, only 48 here this morning. Looks like more rain at any time today. I am off to sub (yay! my last day this school year!), then working tonight for my town job.

I got quite a bit accomplished here yesterday, mostly shelter paperwork. Made hubby some strawberry shortcakes. One of his favorite. I saved out some berries to add to my yogurt for lunch today.

Rick, forgot to say congrats on the loss! Way to go!!

Well, off and running, as usual!
Have a great Wednesday all.

This morning I did some more on my paper work and plan to do so each morning early. If not I don't do it.

Also washed and am ready to put my last load in the dryer.

Am picking up my g/f who just got back from her trip and we are going to lunch.

Had PT yesterday and did some bank work. Trying to simplify my life.

I have one more session of PT and it is over.

Morning all,

We got a surprise yesterday, it rained all day. Certainly wasn't expecting that. Glad to have it though.
Today it is overcast until the afternoon then suppose to get to 71.

Not to much doing today. Need to run into town for some dog food and pick up some hay. I also need to look at our piano, (it's a player piano) the pedals don't work to turn the rolls. Hopefully a hose just came loose. One of our cats use to like to crawl up inside there and hide so hopefully he just pulled one loose.

Exercise this morning before everything else, and BTW I had a 4.5 lb loss at TOPS. That is for two weeks.

Irene, I enjoyed your story. I share a lot of these at TOPS and with our Pastors wife.

Carol, we will have to pick a time to get together to meet when you are not so busy.

Have a great day all!

Rick

Morning all.
It rained most of yesterday. Indoor recess with the 3rd and 4th graders was a bit of a challenge. There was another sub besides me, which can be difficult for some kids.
I was happy to see 3:45 arrive!

I rushed home (am I always rushing?), made 2 phone calls, jumped on the treadmill for my 3 miles, then headed to a shelter meeting at 5. It was 7 by the time I got home and I was pretty hungry, to say the least. I had my usual dinner, but gave in to some crackers and a few potato chips after. Not good choices, I know. That is why I hate eating 'off schedule'.

So, lots to do today. The only day I have to myself this week. Subbing again tomorrow, so I need to be sure I finish odds and ends here.

Rick, I forgot to mention we finally signed up for IRD tours. We are doing the Monday Photo/City tour with Harbor Cruise and the Fairgrounds/fireworks one Wednesday night.
I will be tied up most of the day Wednesday with Field Staff activities so hubby will be on his own that day.

Well, off to exercise. Have a great day everyone!!

God's Coffee

A group of alumni, highly established in their careers, got together to visit their old university professor. Conversation soon turned into complaints about stress in work and life.

Offering his guests coffee, the professor went to the kitchen and returned with a large pot of coffee and an assortment of cups - porcelain, plastic, glass, crystal, some plain looking, some
expensive, some exquisite - telling them to help themselves to the coffee.

When all the students had a cup of coffee in hand, the professor said:

"If you noticed, all the nice looking expensive cups were taken up, leaving behind the plain and cheap ones. While it is normal for you to want only the best for yourselves, that is the source of your problems and stress.

Be assured that the cup itself adds no quality to the coffee. In most cases it is just more expensive and in some cases even hides what we drink.

What all of you really wanted was coffee, not the cup, but you consciously went for the best cups... And then you began eyeing each other's cups.

Now consider this: Life is the coffee; the jobs, money and position in society are the cups. They are just tools to hold and contain Life, and the type of cup we have does not define, nor change the quality of Life we live.

Sometimes, by concentrating only on the cup, we fail to enjoy the coffee God has provided us."

God brews the coffee, not the cups.......... Enjoy your coffee!

"The happiest people don't have the best of everything. They just make the best of everything."

Live simply. Love generously. Care deeply. Speak kindly. Leave the rest to God.

Morning all,

Warm and sunny here. TOPS today, I think I should show a loss. At least according to my scale I do. I suspect overall we won't do well. That is usually the case when we miss a week.

We have all our outings planned and payed for for our trip to S.D. All I have to do is get some swim trunks and rent a car. I don't want to drive my own vehicle down there.
Not much else today just some more work around the house and some work on some agility equipment.

Have a good day all!

Rick

Morning all.
It is cold and damp here this morning. I know my furnace came on in the night. It is 48 here and not expected to get to 55 today.

I am off to sub today. It is the local high school graduation, so subs are always in big demand on this day.

I went to a meeting last night to help finalize our part in the upcoming pet parade on Saturday. I am in charge of the 50/50 raffle so I've got to get some more tickets for that, Tonight is another shelter meeting but I may be a little late as I am going to have to get some walking in after school, if I can.

Well, off to exercise before hitting the shower.

Have a great Monday all.

Went to S S and church this morning, then lunch with my spiritual family (one of them). He is helping me with power of attorney, etc. Then home to spark, a nap, then saw the extreme makeover . A man lost half of his body weight. Way behind on here but I am going to have to be on less and get my paper work done.

Morning all,

Thanks for the info Carol, At least now I have some guidelines to follow when I do get around to it.

Yesterday was a good day. We seen "Wicked" in Sacramento. What a wonderful play!

I would have to say it is absolutely the best play we've seen this season and unfortunately the last. The new season begins in Sept. or Oct. and they have some good ones lined up. I just hope we can still get good seats or at least the ones we had this year.

Church this morning, then into town for a few errands, then home to clean the barn and some odds and ends.

Hve a Blessed Sunday all!

Rick

Morning all.
The 90s Rick? Whoa, we never got out of the 50s yesterday. It rained most of the day here, but at the yard sale we lucked out and it only rained the last couple of hours. The wind was very strong here, though.

Here is a general guideline for how long TOPS records should be kept.
Chapter copy of membership forms-keep until the next new renewal.
TOPS weight charts-keep prior year's chars
KOPS weight charts-keep forever as long as the person remains in TOPS
Meeting minutes-keep for 3 year
Chapter audits-keep at least 3 years
Treasurer's record books-keep at least 3 years
Bank statements and any canceled checks-keep for 3 years

These came from our coordinator many years ago. I know our chapter has stuff for longer than that, but I guess it depends on how much space you have. I'd keep the original charter that came from headquarters if someone still has it ( I'm not sure we even do).

The yard sale continues on this morning. I only made $44 on the hot dog sale. Not a whole lot, but the weather had something to do with that.
It was all donated so we're fine with that.

Today it's housework and laundry for me. The usual Sunday chores. I do have to go to a meeting tonight to finalize our part in the Pet Parade next Saturday.

Well, time to get moving.

Have a wonderful day all.

Carol

Morning all,

It hit 97 here yesterday and will be back in the 90's today.

Today we are going to Sacramento to see "Wicked" This is the final play of our series for the year. I've been wanting to see this for a while.

Carol I have lot of TOPS file boxes that need to be gone through. I keep putting it off because I don't really know what to do with it. Do you retain certain things for an amount of time. and do you shred or destroy the stuff you have cleaned out?

Well gotta get to the exercise then feed.

Have a great day all!

You make me smile, Irene! You can call me a busy body, I'm fine with that!

I ran around most of the day yesterday. We did clean the TOPS desk out and 4 of the 5 file drawers in the time we had. The last one will just have to wait.

Managed to get a little shopping in, too....but hubby's doctor's appointment was 2 hours...the first hour waiting to get in, of course. That put us behind for walking, dinner, etc. Oh well.

Today I'm off to work the yard sale for the shelter. Selling hot dogs and water, mostly. Of course, it started raining just after I got up and will last all day, they are saying. With wind. Nice, huh?

Well, time to get moving. Hope everyone has a terrific day!

Carol

Morning all,

It was 95 here yesterday and will be about the same today..

Irene that story reminded me of a joke where a sermon was being given and the Pastor had read we are but dust in part of a scripture. And a little girl asked her dad, Daddy what is butt dust?

Not much going on here, just the usual chores. I've been building some equipment for Agility use. and am rebuilding my sprinkler valve system.

Have a good day all!

Morning all.
Chilly start to the day here, about 45. Sun and blue sky, will warm it up to the upper 70s. Unfortunately the weekend looks like straight rain both days.

I lost .2 last night...expected a turtle, so I'll take it. The chaper had a 0 net gain/loss. Very unusual for that to happen.

Shopping and other errands on my morning list. This afternoon I'm meeting our chapter leader to clean out the TOPS desk, and if we have time, some of the file cabinet. It's long overdue.

Well, off to exercise. Have a great day all.

God treats you the way one mother treated her young son, Timmy. She didn’t like the idea of his walking to school alone. But he was too grown-up to be seen with his mother. She did her best to stay calm, quoting the 23rd Psalm to him every morning:

“Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life.”

One day she asked a neighbor who walked with her daughter to follow Timmy to school, but to stay at a distance. After several days Timmy’s little friend said, “Do you know that woman who follows us to school? “Sure,” Timmy answered. “That’s Shirley Goodnest and her daughter, Marcy.” My mom reads about them every day in the 23rd Psalm She says they will follow me all the days of my life. So, I guess I better get used to them!

You will too. God never sends you out alone!

Hi all: Carol is busy as always. Maybe the cold keeps you hopping.
The PT came yesterday and will come today and tomorrow also as we missed one day at the beginning of the week. See how I take it three days straight. I have seen the exercises where you put a ball in your back and slide down the wall. I thought I could never do that. I did yesterday but not too close to the floor. I was afraid I would fall.

Morning all.
Scale is down a bit for me again this morning. I do hope it stays looking good until weighin tonight. We shall see.

Had a good afternoon at school yesterday working individually with 4 students All were cooperative. One or 2 days next week, depending on if I can change my cat's vet appointment. Our phone was out all day yesterday (massive outage) came back for a while last evening, but is out again today. Good thing for cell phones, I guess.

This morning I have several errands to do, mostly shelter related. It looks like a fairly nice day today, but we did have a thundershower move through around 10 last night, which could happen any time today, I guess.

Well, off to exercise. Have a terrific Thursday all.

Rich when I received the Lord I wanted to do something for Him. He had done so much for me. I pastored rescue missions in Kansas City, Missouri and also took the young people from our church out to pass out tracts which back then was the thing. I was a young person then also. We would go to the bad parts of town and also go to the beer joints. I could tell you a lot about that.

Morning all,

Exercise this morning then just a lot of work around the house and the property.

Irene that story reminds me of a song by Todd Agnew called My "Jesus". I am proud to say, that would not happen at our church. One of the things we are known for is our ministry for reaching out to the homeless as well as the areas where people considered less desirable live.

We sure could use some of that rain Carol. I don't think we got much this season and I know the snow pack is pretty low. Usually by now the creeks are swelled and running.

Well I better get my day started.
Have a great day all!

Morning all.
Whew! The storms were pretty significant yesterday and caused some damage, but we escaped the worst of it. No hail, just heavy rain. Today promises to be a nicer day.

Worked most of the day for my town job, got my baking done (brownies, bread, and banana bread), but not much else.

I am off to sub at 11:30, so I think this morning I'll tackle my AC monthly newsletter. I'm going to go check on the plants left over after Saturday's plant sale later today too. I suspect some of them did not fare too well in the pounding rain.

Well, off to exercise.
Have a terrific day all.

Help Somebody

It was a cold winter's day that Sunday. The parking lot to the church was filling up quickly. I noticed as I got out of my car that fellow church members were whispering among themselves as they walked to the church.

As I got closer I saw a man leaned up against the wall outside the church. He was almost laying down as if he was asleep. He had on a long trench coat that was almost in shreds and a hat topped his head, pulled down so you couldn't see his face.

He wore shoes that looked 30 years old, too small for his feet, with holes all over them, his toes stuck out. I assumed this man was homeless, and asleep, so I walked on by through the doors of the Church.

We all enjoy fellowship for a few minutes, and then someone brought up the man who was laying outside. People snickered and gossiped, but no one bothered to ask him to come in, including me. A few moments later church began. We all waited for the Preacher to take his place, and to give us The Word, when the doors to the church opened. In came the homeless man, walking down the aisle with his head down.

People gasped and whispered and made faces. He made his way down the aisle and up onto thepulpit. When he took off his hat and coat my heart sank. There stood our preacher... he was the "homeless man."

No one said a word... the room was silent and still.

Then the preacher took his Bible and laid it on the stand.

"Folks, I don't think I have to tell you what I'm preaching about today." Then he started singing the words to this song...

"If I can help somebody as I pass along,
If I can cheer somebody with a word or song,
If I can show somebody that he's traveling wrong,
Then my living shall not be in vain."

Rick I used to memorize scripture very well. In fact won some contests in Spanish while still learning Spanish but now can't retain it as well. Maybe I don't work at it as much. I used to put it on cards and carry them with me.
Then when I would preach sometimes things would come out of my mouth I would never remember learning, thus the basket.
Glad it encouraged you/

Morning all,

Irene the story is a good reminder for me to remember. Just because I cannot recite scripture like a lot of my friends doesn't necessarily mean I don't retain some of it.

Have to go have blood work and chest x-rays today. Aside from that just work around the house.

Have a good day all!

Morning all.
54 and raining here this morning. Bad thunderstorm came through in the night and more expected today. Guess we can't complain after 3 beautiful days in a row, all on the long weekend!

I had to work last night for my town job, so there's more paperwork to do today. It shouldn't take more than the morning though.

Scale is down this morning. I find it hard to stick to sensible eating when hubby is around on a weekday, but today things are back to a normal routine. He worked all weekend to finish his project and we delivered it yesterday afternoon. Glad that is out of the garage. Then he was mowing the lawn until 9 last night! Barely enough light to see, even!

Well, off to exercise. Have a great day everyone.

The story is told of an old man who lived on a farm in the mountains of eastern Kentucky with his young grandson.

Each morning, Grandpa was up early sitting at the kitchen table reading from his old worn-out Bible. His grandson who wanted to be just like him tried to imitate him in any way he could..

One day the grandson asked, 'Papa, I try to read the Bible just like you but I don't understand it, and what I do understand I forget as soon as I close the book. What good does reading the Bible do?'
The Grandfather quietly turned from putting coal in the stove and said, 'Take this old wicker coal basket down to the river and bring back a basket of water.'

The boy did as he was told, even though all the water leaked out before he could get back to the house.
The grandfather laughed and said, 'You will have to move a little faster next time,' and sent him back to the river with the basket to try again.
This time the boy ran faster, but again the old wicker basket was empty before he returned home. Out of breath, he told his grandfather that it was 'impossible to carry water in a basket,' and he went to get a bucket instead.
The old man said, 'I don't want a bucket of water; I want a basket of water. You can do this. You're just not trying hard enough,' and he went out the door to watch the boy try again.

At this point, the boy knew it was impossible, but he wanted to show his grandfather that even if he ran as fast as he could, the water would leak out before he got far at all.
The boy scooped the water and ran hard, but when he reached his grandfather the basket was again empty. Out of breath, he said, 'See Papa, it's useless!'

'So you think it is useless?' the old man said. 'Look at the basket.'

The boy looked at the basket and for the first time he realized that the basket looked different. Instead of a dirty old wicker coal basket, it was clean.

'Son, that's what happens when you read the Bible. You might not understand or remember everything, but when you read it, it will change you from the inside out.'

Moral of the wicker basket story:
Take time to read a portion of God's word each day; it will affect you for good even if you don't retain a word.

Thought for Today:

God's Love is like the ocean, you can see its beginnings
but not its end.

I really like this story because I don't retain things as

well as I used to,but I realize
God isn't concerned about my brain anyway;
He's more concerned about my heart.

Morning all, And Happy Memorial Day!

We are back from our Agility Trials over the weekend. Overall The dogs (and handler) did pretty good. I think we ended up with 6 blue ribbons two thirds. But it was a tiring weekend.

We were rear ended on the freeway on the way home. Not a lot of damage but I need to take my truck to the body shop for an estimate.

Work today but no TOPS this morning as our meeting place is closed.

Have a great and safe day all!

Rick

Morning all.
Jude, it's hard to wake up each morning and think, What can I eat today and still stay in leeway? I wish we could give you the daily help you need, but as a 13 year KOPS, my best advice is this: weigh yourself every day, at least for the first year. I know there are lots of daily fluctuations, due to water, sodium content, etc., and some you have no control over.

But the key to maintaining is to NOT let one day turn into 2 or more of eating the stuff you KNOW will tempt you to go back to a unhealthy way of eating. Old habits, which you changed to become a KOPS, are GONE. New habits are here to stay, or you will be in trouble.

Not trying to sound preachy, believe me, but I've seen too many KOPS over the years lose status by playing a dangerous numbers game above goal, barely in leeway. Think of your goal as your TOPS leeway and don't let yourself get caught up in that game. It is too stressful.

Maintain a regular exercise plan at least 5 days a week, maybe more. It will keep your metabolism in the 'burning' zone, thus allowing you extra calories for special treats you enjoy. Definitely do NOT stop those special treats, just allow them when you've banked your calories for the day by cutting back on something else.

Well, I'm off to exercise myself and start my day. Hope everyone is enjoying good weather this holiday weekend.
And please remember to thank a verteran today!

I was wondering if NICE was a Walgreen's brand or where it came from. One of my coupons was for a mouth was which cost $5.00 and I got a coupon for $5.00 off my next in store purchase of whatever. I bought two and still have a $5.00 coupon and notice that the sale starting tomorrow has a $5.00 coupon if you spend $20.00.
I am always looking for bargains.
Today I will be preparing for Sunday and am also doing some washing.

Irene, I went to Wal-Greens yesterday too! What a coincidence! I had only one coupon, though, and it only saved me about $3. I like their NICE brands of items. I've bought that brand of salt-free almonds in a can twice now. Very tasty, and not a bad price.

It is overcast this morning but is supposed to be nice all day. I sure hope so. I have to be outdoors all day helping at the shelter's plant sale. It's the first time we have tried it, but there's a couple others going on in the area, so we are competing with those.

Well, time to hit the shower. Have a terrific Saturday all!

Morning all.
It's 62 here this morning, warm for us. But overcast, looking like a storm could pop up at any moment.

I stayed the same last night and the chapter had a net loss. Small, a at least it was a loss.

Finished stacking all the wood in the cellar yesterday so we are ready for next winter. Too early to think about that, but I'm glad it's done.

Rick, I'm used to contradictions in terms....in Vermont we often say 'wicked nice'. Maybe that's a 'hick' thing, but we hear it a lot.

I am off to grocery shop this morning and do other errands, after exercise. Guess I'd better get moving.

Have a terrific day everyone.

Cheering Me On

Losing a loved one is the hardest thing in life, but stories like this really show that they're still there, cheering us on.
------

I close my eyes as tight as they can go.

The lights go off, and my imagination switches on. Pictures flash through my mind like an old film from the fifties.

I remember driving home by myself for the first time. Now, I look into the future and imagine that I am walking across the stage to receive my college diploma. The years pass, and I hear my fianc é say "I do." I look further and listen to the gentle gurgles coming from my baby's nursery. A smile discreetly appears as memories past and thoughts of the future travel through my soul.

I journey to memories of my high school graduation, and a tear suddenly trickles down my cheek. I look into the bleachers packed with families and friends. I see my parents wrapped in pride, and I look to their side for Katie and Kevin's approval. But Katie, my older sister, is not there.

My eyes abruptly open as I am snapped back into reality. I remember being called out of Spanish class in tenth grade and taken to the hospital to see Katie, who had cancer, for the final time. It was an excruciating task, but I found the good in Katie's tragic death.

Katie's room is exactly the way she left it on a Friday night in September, 1993, when she was carried to the ambulance on a stretcher. Her James Dean poster hangs on one wall; her elementary school track ribbons and collection of porcelain masks hangs on the others. Her bed is neatly made and lined with stuffed animals -- typical of a girl who would visit her sloppier friends and, without prompting, start vacuuming their rooms.

Katie died just a few weeks into her freshman year at the University of Miami. At eighteen she was 5'5'' tall and had straight shoulder length blond hair, big blue eyes, and pale clear skin. Her senior year in high school, Katie was the varsity cheerleader captain and valedictorian.

More importantly, though, she was my best friend. After all, when she was six years old, she had declared herself old enough to take care of her little sister and brand new baby brother, because she thought our mother was not sharing us enough with her. This caring attitude continued throughout her life. Katie would always braid my hair, go shopping with me, and let me go out with her and her friends when I was lonely and bored. Katie would always tutor Kevin, who has a learning disability, when he needed help with his homework. She would continually drill him on his studies until he got it right. Afterwards, she would take him to go get ice cream as a reward. Clearly, Katie was not just our older sister. She was also our teacher, friend, and second mother.

Katie always surrounded herself with friends. She was constantly opening her ears, heart, and arms to someone in need. The phone was constantly ringing and her room was always crowded with people in it. Now, my house is silent.

I realize that getting caught in a pool of depression only leads to drowning. I live by looking for the positive in the worst situations. I now have a relationship with my parents and brother that means everything to me. I know what is important in life, and it is not always partying and getting A's. But most of all, I know that I can handle anything. Life is not easy, but I overcame one of its toughest obstacles.

I believe, the hardest part of death is the experiences it steals. Katie will not be clapping for me when I finally get my college diploma or giving me advice on my wedding day. My children will only hear stories of the girlhood of their aunt, both stories of reality and an imagined future.

I close my eyes as tight as they can go.

A diploma is placed in my hand. "I do" echoes from a distance. Katie says she loves me and hugs me tight on a September afternoon in 1993. Just before I cross my high school auditorium stage, I look out at the spectators in the bleachers, and I see mother and father and Kevin.

Katie is sitting right beside them, cheering me on.
