emoticon on getting back on track ladies.

Between getting the flu and a few Christmas dinners I am still on track.

Paced myself: yes
Planned my meals: yes
Water: 6 cups
Focus: good health, being slimmer and avoid getting diabetes
Extra snacks: 0
Meals ate w/awareness: 4 out 4

Reflections: I noticed that when I wanted something that I would normally not eat, I was satisfied with just a few bites. Takes time to break old habits completely.

Good to have you back DJ.

So this is how I think about that 5 pounds - it is what I call "fresh fat" and "fresh fat moves fast" so as long as you get right on track again it wont hang around. It came on really fast and it can come off just as quick - it hasnt had time to get settled in! It is the stuff that has been around for the last 20+ years that is tougher because the glue has set hard. It helps me to think like this and it helps me get back on track as quickly as I can.
Remember we are not on a diet - we are on a Live-it! If we go on a diet then we plan at some point to come off the diet. We are not going to do that this time - we are going to develop healthy habits and once we have lost the weight we will continue but will be able to be a little more relaxed. We are also learning what "derails" us and we are coming up with strategies so that next time we can cope with the challenges better.

Sounds like a great idea to not let the scale be the measure of success but rather your health and how you are feeling. The number on the scale changes hourly and can vary at least 5 pounds in the day between the highest and the lowest. That is why I only weigh once a week. If we lead this healthy lifestyle the weight will come off.

You are so right - if we give up we will just weigh so much more by this time next year. I follow the 4 rules for success.

1. Show up (here on the boards, at a weigh in etc)
2. Pay attention (what works and what doesn't. how you feel etc)
3. Ask questions (of yourself and of others).
4. DON'T QUIT!

2014 is going to be a great year for us. Happy New Year

Day 23

Hi Jane ... and everybody wherever you are!

I'm having a bit of a problem getting totally back on track too! And weigh-in was yesterday - and that was not pleasant - ha! Up 5 pounds! Three days of 'getting off and trying to get back on track' sure can pack it on fast. Admittedly my mood plummeted.

But I read more of the book last night - and got re-inspired. Realized a major change I need to tend to is forgetting about 'THE POUNDS' and focus solely on whether what I am eating is nutritious and forwarding me toward better health. If I just keep up with the veggies, fruits, beans, nuts and seeds - increase my activity to some daily - the pounds will eventually come off but in the meantime my HEALTH is steadily getting better. I do sincerely want this to become my way of life in terms of eating and I want to learn how to accommodate holidays and special occasions better.

The foods I ate 'off plan' did not satisfy me (at all), I felt worse/not as energetic, etc. etc. I 'felt' like I was gaining and I was. That almost was a "I give up" point but I knew if I did by this time next year I could well be 50-60 lbs or more higher and back to extreme joint pain, blood pressure problems and who knows what else.

I've never 'dieted' with nutrition in mind before - only calories and pounds up or down and inches. I think for me to be successful at this point in life the numbers are going to have to be blood pressure, cholesterol, etc etc showing improvement and I'll have to really give credit to 'feeling better'.

The scale is still way too much of a self-sabotage tool ... but maybe I can get a grip on that now and not 'let that be the case' ...

So today - so far - I am back on track...

Hope everyone is ready to see in the New Year with better healthy habits!

Where is everyone?? I am feeling a little lonely here on this board.

I have found it a little tough getting back totally on track but I think today I am doing fine. I thought that yesterday and then "slipped up" in the evening just before bed. I had dinner earlier than usual so I think that may have contributed.

Today I feel proud of myself. I saw a recipe for a smoothie that used a whole lot of veggies as well as fruit. I ate it but to me it was nowhere near as tasty as the veggies and fruit would have been just cubed and eaten. I did not enjoy the taste of everything blended together. We live and learn. For lunch I made a roasted broccoli/lemon dish served with brown rice. It was OK but I probably wont make it again.

I am a little conservative with my eating so it is good that I am trying new things even if I rule them out of my repertoire. I am really looking forward to a nice big salad with chickpeas tonight for dinner.

Looking forward to hearing how everyone is doing.

Back on track!! I gave myself permission to be off the program for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day - some how it extended into Boxing Day! I had wonderful time but my body did not like going back to eating all that other stuff.

I am so happy to be eating the ETL way again. I have cleaned out my place of all the Christmas goodies and I have loads of veggies etc all ready and available. I have until Thursday to get my weight back on track as there was no weigh-in yesterday.

I hope you all had a good break and enjoyed some time with friends and family.

Day 20 -
Well, the Christmas Ham at my house called my name ... not once, not twice ...but who's counting? ha! And so did a couple of brownies and chocolate chip cookies our neighbors delivered. But just spent a few minutes setting some personal goals/trackers and have a busy day tomorrow planned activity wise - pruning trees and creating 'slash piles' - probably several hours worth of work. So, getting back to it ... slowly but surely.

Hope everyone had a great holiday!

Almost there! It will soon be behind us - just hang in! emoticon

Glad you found the videos DJ. I like them for variety -I have done some of the Pilates and the ball workouts but I think I will take a look at the seated one that you did. That's amazing how your taste for coffee as changed.

I am so motivated at the moment - I have 2 friends who are thinking of trying ETL in the New Year.

The next 2 days will be my challenge as I am out at friends for dinner on Christmas Eve and then on Christmas Day I have brunch at my son's and dinner in the evening with a big family gathering. I think I will be OK food wise - not strictly ETL but sensible. I just have to pace myself with the drinks.

I might not get to the boards until after Christmas so here is wishing you a wonderful holidays.

Cheers Jane emoticon

Aloha Everybody ...

You got a smile out of me Jane! That was cute ... now if Santa only cooperates!

Today I checked out some of the videos here - thanks for suggesting that Jane. I first did the 9 min Seated Upper Body Workout using handheld balls (from L. Sansone's walking kit I once had). My arms have always needed 'work' - ha! And this did the job nicely. Next I did the 11 min Chair Cardio Workout ... was I SURPRISED. You can get quite the workout - in fact I had to quit early. So this is definitely going to be a resource I'll use come rain or shine - ha!

I'll continue with these two several days a week and explore others while continuing to work on increasing my walking. These worked here in the limited space I have indoors (live in motorhome presently). It was looking like a real downpour was coming in and I didn't want to get caught out in mud walking - thought about blowing off exercise altogether and then remembered Jane's suggestion! Had no excuse then - ha!

Doing well with my water intake ... had celery sticks with hummus and a papaya for lunch ... I am still so full today I don't even want to think about dinner. My usual veggie/bean stir fry and fruit for breakfast. My caffeine is almost totally zilch now ... I'm down to green tea and herbal teas. Today I 'thought' I wanted a REAL cup of coffee - we make it REALLY strong and dark around here ... I poured a small cup - drank a few sips - it tasted awful! Had to ask my husband if it was 'okay' - I was sure I made it the same as always. He said it was fine to him. Boy - my taste 'buds' sure do CHANGE eating this way and getting away from all the stuff I am. I don't even want my own coffee now!

Hope everyone's week goes well!

Sounds like everyone is doing a fabulous job especially considering the season. emoticon Keep up the good work it can only get easier once the temptations, parties etc are not around every corner.

We are learning a new lifestyle and we have to be able to go off track a little bit occasionally the main thing is that we follow the plan for the majority of the time and that we do not give up. I have decided that I need regular 0% milk and a small amount of a good salad dressing (not ETL) that I enjoy. Also if I am out to eat I do my best but I don't beat up on myself. DJ well done for getting over the obstacle(s) last week and recovering. Maintaining your 10lb weight loss is great. I know you would have liked to lose more but 10lb in 2 weeks is fabulous and you are still on track!

I had fruit (banana & a pear) and 1oz nuts for breakfast. For lunch I had a huge salad with mixed beans topped with chia seeds and a bowl of homemade soup. For dinner I have homemade vegetarian chilli full of lentils, beans and other veggies then fruit for dessert.

I am sure that you have all found the fat-free vegan website but just in case you haven't here is the link. Loads of information and ideas.

I am going to make the ridiculously easy cream of broccoli soup. Will let you know how it turns out - looks yummy.

I will leave you with a smile. Was at a friends recently and she had some napkins with the following on them.

"Santa, my wish is for a fat bank account and a thin body.
Please don't mix these up like you did last year."

Had a great simple salad today. Chopped Romaine lettuce, a large navel orange chopped, and Cindy's Double Garlic, Ginger & Lime dressing (not ETL, but hey!). The scale was down this morning and I had more energy and less stiffness.

Aloha Everybody ~

Looks like everyone's doing well ... congrats on your weigh-in Jane! Good job!

Today I weighed in - sorta was spinning wheels this past week with my 'splurge' I did - gained 3 lbs for that little dip in off the track waters - but lost it by weigh-in today ... so still in the same place ... down 10 lbs. Not real happy with myself - but lesson learned (I hope - ha!).

Still reading the book which is helping me decide even more deeply I truly want to be healthy and I am longing to 'feel' what it will feel like to be my proper weight AND healthy - I've never been that actually - the last time I was my proper weight I was a teen and lived on junk food! No wonder I was moody and depressed - ha! I'm looking forward to living in the world in a whole different way as I become healthier and healthier on this plan.

Today breakfast was BIG - I used my green pan to 'dry' fry (slightly) cabbage, red and green bell peppers, eggplant, onions, mushrooms, broccoli, garlic, red beans and a crumbled up soy sausage pattie. Had baby carrots and sliced tomatos on the side ... and a banana.

Yesterday definitely burned some calories - 3 hours helping a teacher prepare her classroom for having the floors refinished during holiday break. Lots of moving furniture, boxes and just tons of stuff off the floor. I was tired after - sweaty - and my knees definitely let me know they were rebelling - but in the past when I've done this it took me a day or two to recover. Today I'm good to go!!! Will walk Daisy today, work in the yard some and hopefully do yoga too! All depending on rain...but will adjust to something else if need to.

Keep up the good attitudes everybody. We CAN do this ... help ourselves to a slice of good healthy life!

Jaizways - great weight loss. Way to go! I am so greatful to Mauitn for suggesting that I use a notebook to keep track of my food. That little tidbit has helped me keep on track. Am feeling so good.....now for the weekend. My husband is a road driver and my daughter will be leaving this afternoon to drive to FL. So, I get to worry about this weather and everyone getting to where they have to go safely. If you are traveling, I hope you have a safe trip. Happy Friday!

PS - Have you read the ETL book? I've read it twice and may sit down and read it again soon.

Hi Spark friends
Well it was weigh in day today for me and I lost another 2.3 lbs. So that is a total of 6.8 lbs in 10 days - so I am really happy.

After weigh in I had a potluck luncheon. Well there was virtually no ETL friendly food which I knew there would not be. My strategy was threefold:

1. to eat as healthy as I could,
2. have just one small plate and
3. have no more than a tablespoon of any one thing

I achieved all of the above and I only drank water. Tonight I had a bowl of homemade broccoli soup and a big salad so hopefully overall I am still on target.

DJ and Jules - good to hear that you managed to turn things around after a tough patch. These challenges can teach us a lot and the main thing is to recover as quickly as you can and try to reflect on what sent you off the tracks. Sounds like your book arrived at a perfect time DJ to help you get re-focused. The main thing is do not give up. If you can get through the next 12 days you can survive anything.

My next challenge is lunch out with friends on Sunday - luckily it is at a restaurant and I have already looked at the menu and decided what I am going to have. I find a restaurant easier than eating at family or friends - I can order what I want and how I want it and the chef doesn't care whether I eat it or not, so no-one is offended or offering me seconds or dessert.

That's good that your job is active DJ. I will be getting some activity tomorrow as we are promised snow 5 - 10 cm. We don't get much snow and it usually only lasts for a day or two. Still we have to keep the sidewalks clear and as I am the only one at home tomorrow it will be my job.

Have a good ETL day.

Hi Everybody ~

Well, I was starting to 'drift' off plan a bit and it seemed to snowball and last night did not go well foodwise. But I had received Dr. Fuhrman's book from the library yesterday and started reading when I went to bed last night and before breakfast this morning. It could not have come at a better time.

I not only was fascinated with all the information (I'm about halfway through the book) but it helped me realize the most and fastest weightloss I'll manage IS in the first six weeks ... but I can't expect success if I am not putting forth my 'best' effort - which for me personally means I can do a lot better - holidays or not.

So I am going to rededicate to doing the six week plan with no exception - or as little as possible. Will it kill me to pass up holiday foods? Nooooooo...I don't think so. Can I have a good time without eating off plan foods? Well I know I can - food is NOT actually what determines whether I have an enjoyable time/event.

I know I can 'fudge' a little during the holidays and start back gung ho after - but that does not REALLY benefit me.

If I truly want to be healthy as much as I think and say I do - and lowering my weight is only one component of that goal - I've already 'fudged' it for 6 decades practically - how long should I wait to get serious and finally enjoy life healthy and at my 'best' weight?

It may sound too strict and overbearing - but I know this is best 'for me'. Allowing myself to go off plan 'because it is the holidays' won't work in the long run ... every month there is 'something' - a holiday, birthday, anniversary, getting together with friends, special events-
I'm tired of setting up patterns of exceptions and excuses and then wondering why I'm not successful ...

Please understand this is what I need to do - for everyone else it could be different and I'm supportive of all you however you work the plan for yourselves.

So - had a couple of slipups but back on track NOW ... and still looking forward to wonderful holiday and fellowship.

I'll be offline till Saturday or Sunday - have a job tomorrow (an active job - good calorie burner - ha!) ... but I'll be thinking about you guys! till later ~

Hi Everyone and welcome Jules (we are glad to have you on the team) emoticon

Have been really busy and not getting to the message boards as much as usual. Anyway I am now all caught up.

Jules - I too struggled with tracking when I first started. I like Earnie's idea of a notepad as often it is quicker than going to the computer to enter everything. Now I fluctuate every few weeks between a notepad and the computer. The way that I find tracking the easiest is to sit down after dinner and plan my meals for tomorrow by writing them in my tracker. Often I do not eat what is planned but then I just have to change it. If I feel hungry I check my tracker first to see what the plan was.

Earnie - I am so glad that you are feeling better and are able to continue. We so have to listen to our bodies.

DJ - I hope you are feeling back to normal now.

Its funny but I have had no appetite for the past two days (not like me at all!!) and I have a strange taste in my mouth. I had taken some cold & flu medication as I had the remnants of a cold which had left me with a nasty cough - I don't know if the funny taste is from something in the medication - I don't usually take anything. Anyway the coughing seems better so I've stopped taking it. I am trying to make myself eat normally today on ETL.

Weigh in day for me tomorrow - I think I will be down but I am not sure by how much. Whatever down is down and I will be happy with that..

Keep going everyone emoticon . Christmas will be almost over by this time next week. I find that the week between Christmas and New Year are the toughest but I am trying not to buy in lots of stuff that has to be eaten up after. I am taking it a day at a time. Luckily I am having Christmas at my son's place and so I don't get left with the leftovers.

I am so glad that I have you guys for support emoticon

Half way through the day and it's going great. Just finished one mile walk with Leslie and now eating my lunch that was all planned out and delicious. My food journal is also going to become my "emotion" journal.....my way of talking to myself. Day #1 feels great....I am so excited I think my pants feel better already. LOL - enjoy

Jules, great job in making a plan that you can work with and that suits your life. Everyone has to find their own way.

Couldn't sleep so I just got up. I have an appointment to get a hair cut and do some shopping later today. It will be an easy day.

I am using Mauitn advice and got me a notebook. I have already written down what I am eating this morning....that way when I get back to sparkpeople I can put it in my tracker. Even tho I have dieted most of my adult life if I don't write it down, it didn't happen. I have to write it down. I also find that if it's something I'm having trouble tracking then I just give up. I CAN DO THIS. I am also going to start off doing my one mile walk away the pounds dvd on my lunch hour today. I can build up quickly with walking because that is my exercise of choice and have been doing it for years. I cannot continue like this. The line has been drawn in the sand. I hope I can count on this team for support. Make it a great day everyone.

Day 11

Aloha Everybody ~

Jules - I've dieted most of my life so I only track what I have the most trouble with. I keep a book tracking my water intake, activity (type, time) and my once weekly weigh-ins. As far as food I might note what I eat that is OFF plan ... as long as I'm doing the right choices I don't bother to list those everyday. I think we all have to find what works best individually and benefits us the most as far as having info to review. For people who are newer to 'dieting' having accountability and tools is very beneficial. I've done it so many years it kind of is in my brain - ha! Just waiting for the results to show up on my body once I fully 'use' all the knowledge - ha!

Earnie good to see you here and glad you are feeling better. I think we all end up modifying any plan a bit to accommodate certain conditions or situations. As far as oils - just use the best you can maybe and up activity a bit to counteract the 'dense' caloric aspect of oils?

Jane - going out and having a treat once in a while is not going to make or break us I don't think - it's when the going out becomes 'often' that it gets real tricky to handle. Holidays are always a challenge no matter what. We have 1-3 things comings up - not to mention what we do 'traditionally' at home - I'm 'weighing' it all right now (pardon the pun) in my mind to see what I really want to do. I don't need to go off track for all of them...so going to pick and choose. If they weren't within days of each other it'd be easier - ha! I'll attend all the functions ... just not going to go crazy at all. Well, that's the vague plan at this point - we'll see - ha!

IAMJOYFUL2 - I find that prep is the key. I try to keep on hand and in mind things I can make really fast and easy without a whole lot of prepping involved for days (or meals) when I just don't want to go to all the trouble. Good for you tracking what you are doing and getting back on track as soon as possible. Impulses are hard to resist - I find that what helps me most is to remember to take a few seconds or minutes and take a deep breath - give myself some time to not have an instant response to an impulse - and then choose some other delaying tactics ... such as drinking a glass of water or a cup of hot herbal tea ... while doing so I think of something on plan I can do instead that I love. And if all goes well - I'm over the impulse. Now I won't give you my success ratio on this technique I have personally - not till I'm better at it myself! It's hard - we just have to keep on trying and realize someday it will get easier to ignore our impulses and slowly they may even start disappearing altogether!

I wasn't feeling good late yesterday and today kind of still 'off'' a bit. We had errands to run as well today - and now company is coming so my exercise has gone down the drain today. Even my water drinking - everything is off today - I am so far behind eating it's not even funny! But hope I manage to pull together a good healthy dinner at least.

Hopefully tomorrow will be a more normal day... good evening to all! take care

Day 21

Paced myself: no
Planned my meals: no
Water: 6 cups
Focus: good health, being slimmer and avoid getting diabetes
Extra snacks: 2
Meals ate w/awareness: 2 out 4

Reflection:
12/16 - I am getting lazy on my meal routine. It showed at dinner time when I ate a bit more than needed. I did cut back this morning to compensate.
12/17 - Fail to plan, prepare to fail. I derailed at dinner time. This morning I am back on track. What I knew but choose not to do: ignored my plan - there are no shortcuts. I chose impulse over health - There is nothing more important than my health.

Jules, I dont always track here, but I do keep a daily journal and record my weight, foods, and any other important information. Doesnt have to be long or detailed. But I can always look back and see what I was doing.

I am back to feeling normal without the gallbladder symptoms and my weight has dropped back down. So I guess my body is telling me to go slow and easy into this and modify to suit my needs.

Hi Everyone
Its been a while since I posted but all is going well with the ETL. Last night I went out to the pub with some friends for dinner. I decided before I went what I would eat - a big salad and a grilled chicken breast with Cajun seasoning. It was really tasty and because of the seasoning I was able to skip any dressing. I am not totally vegetarian and the only vege choice was a vegeburger which I was not sure about. I also allowed myself one beer. I would rather lose weight a little slower to have an occasional treat.

Was sorry to hear that your gall bladder is acting up Earnie. Health has to be #1 and maybe you will have to have a little oil. Anyway I wish you all the best and I hope you get it sorted out soon. emoticon
I have been having a little bit in my salad dressing. I tried making some of the fat free ones but couldn't find one I liked so I went back to one that has oil in it and I cut down on the oil. My feeling was that since "salad is the main meal" then I had to enjoy it.

DJ - I like your attitude over the cheese sandwich. It definitely is not a deal breaker. Weight loss I believe is 95% in the head and we have to be able to forgive ourselves and learn something from our slips. You are a few of days ahead of me on this challenge and I am sure I am going to have a slip up some day soon. The main thing is to do what you did and get right back on track. emoticon

Iamjoyful - you are giving yourself feedback each day - that is great! emoticon

Keep going everyone - I look forward to hearing about your progress.

One of the problems I had the last time I was on the ETL diet was that I had a flare-up of gallstone problems. The minute I went back to having some oil/fat in my diet, it went away. That happened again over the weekend. I knew I was on the verge of having the gallstone attacks by the pressure and indigestion. It was the same as before. When I do not eat any fat, my gallbladder stalls. So,,, for the moment, I am back to eating small amounts of fat. That is at least until I can figure out what to try. And, of course, my weight is back up a bit. I'll figure this out, but may not post as much for a while.

Best of luck to you all.

Wow DJ, ten pounds is fabulous!

Jane, keep a check on that blood pressure. My doctor wants me to take my readings at home and drop them off at her office, because mine is always high in her office. White coat syndrome.

Snow on the ground this morning. Not that much, just enough to cover. But it makes for a beautiful picture. All those days I was eating out and still losing have caught up with me. The scale is up .8 of a pound this morning so I need to settle down and be more careful about my diet. However, that makes 1.8 lbs for the week. I wont fuss about that with all the meals out this last week. This time around I am more concerned with health than numbers also. As Dj just said, I will just go back to what is normal now.

Morning all!

IAMJOYFUL2 - enjoyed reading your 'reflection' ... and good that you are being accountable by posting here and developing new 'habits' - in 'remembering' what we want to be doing, not what we simply want to do (old ways).

Jane - fantastic about your blood pressure going down to NORMAL! Doesn't that feel good!!! I had similar experience and so happy I can control my high blood pressure simply by changing my diet. That to me is just the coolest thing in the world - ha! It's nice to have company in the lower your blood pressure with food club - ha!

Well - last night ...
I 'slipped' up on my eating. Don't know WHY - I wasn't hungry - there was no REAL reason - it just popped into my mind a couple of times that I wanted a cheese sandwich - ha! It bugged me that it popped in my mind twice I guess and I just jumped up and made one. One thing now that I realize that I did different last night was I had not fixed my hot tea. Had I had that I might have blown off the 'sandwich on the brain' a bit better .Of course, once I could feel myself on the 'sandwich brainstorming' (I felt it would go on and on) the hot tea did not even sound like an option - ha! Honestly I didn't even give it a chance to be one. Not beating myself up about it at all ... just goes to show how our 'bodies follow our mind'. I'm learning success in dieting has way more to do with the mind than anything else - ha! Disciplined mind = disciplined body. I'm back on track this morning ... I had brief 'habitual' bad dieting habit thoughts last night though of thinking I'd have to 'make up' for this sandwich attack - be sure to walk more or eat less - etc etc. The traditional crazy 'diet' mindset ... then I calmed down and told my 'mind' NO - just go back to what is my new 'normal' (or becoming my new normal) and eat good and healthy food and do regular exercise plan. It was after all just ONE cheese sandwich - NOT a dealbreaker - ha!

emoticon on losing 10 lbs DJB
Jaiz - It is easier to stay on my plan as time goes by because it is becoming a habit. If I did not report daily, I would tend to forget my goals, stop working on them and start gaining weight.
I was prediabetic earlier this year but got my numbers back into the high normal figure. It is important to me not to get prediabetic again but without my daily reminder -- I would soon forget.

Day 19

Paced myself: yes, I followed my schedule
Planned my meals: yes
Water: 6 cups
Motivation: good health, being slimmer and avoid getting diabetes

Meals ate w/awareness: 4 out 4

Reflection:
There was a piece of chocolate cake in the frig and I wanted some. I took a little sliver to enjoy. I took a little bite and noticed it didn't taste as good as I imagined it would so I threw it away. Better it go to waste than my waist.

I agree with Earnie, I enjoy the longer posts. Just don't always have time to write them.

TEN whole pounds lost - that is emoticon . Now you are in "one"derland!! Well done. Success spurs you on - it is one of the best motivators.

I have had a busy day - cant believe how much energy I have. I made some Dundee Cakes (really moist fruit cakes with almonds on top) It is a recipe of my Mom's from it UK. I only make at Christmas as it takes a long time to cook. Even people that don't like fruit cake love this recipe so now everyone expects me to make them. I didn't even nibble at the dried fruit!

I read Dr F a bit more today and he says not to worry if you cant eat everything don't force yourself. Also he says raw is better than cooked as it has a longer transit time in the system and therefore a lower glucose response.

My blood pressure which had been creeping up there - usually in the 130's but occasionally 150 and when I went to the orthopedic surgeon he measured it at 170 - scared me to death as I have had low blood pressure until recently. Anyway when I was in Boston with my daughter she gave me a blood pressure monitor that they were not using and I have been taking it each morning. It has gradually come down this week Monday it was 142 and every day it has been a bit lower - yesterday it was 120 and today 117 - I am amazed! and very happy.

Not too long a post at all. I enjoy the newsy posts. It turns out that I probably don't have a cold, but had a little allergic/sinus reaction to something. I'm so happy.

Welcome Back IamJoyful2!!! and a warm hello to TIG - nice to see you join us!

Well - today is day 8 for me - I weighed in and I have lost 10 lbs. I know from this point on it gets slower and I'll be doing good in the future if I lose 2 lbs per week but I'm 'up' for that challenge - to stick it out! My goal is not evolving around the numbers so much but how much better I am feeling. I am more energetic but sleeping better (than I have in years actually) and with each pound loss my knees are not giving me as much pain. There are other improvements in health I've experienced since going vegan the past six months but this 6 week challenge and knocking off the pounds is a blessing - if I continue to feel better and better maybe I'll be hiking one day again!

Earnie - take care of that cold early and maybe it'll be a short-lived one! I would love to see pictures of your meals. I've been meaning to tell you I visited your sparkpage and your photos are wonderful. It was early on when I joined and when I saw the protea I thought you had visited the islands at least. Then when you posted you lived in Maui before it 'hit' me - your name 'Mauitn'! Sometimes I'm slow - ha! We lived on Maui as well - about 12-13 years ago - we were there for about 7 years in West Maui. I loved it - we had to move to CA for my husband's job and thought we'd be there 2 years and then back. Got stuck there for 8 years. Finally we said we're going back no matter how and glad we did.

Loved the motivational post you linked ... I don't care how good the food can be one still needs to find ways to be motivated, realistic and patient. I'm only just now learning to apply that - I've always known it - ha!

Jane - like you (I think we could be twins - so many similarities!) - I am finding it hard to eat the quantity as well. In fact yesterday I didn't really want to eat at all - ha! And that is a rare day in my lifetime - ha! I did manage to get 3 meals in - but they were even less in 'quantity' than I've been doing.

One of my other problems is I like my veggies more raw - even when I cook it's as little as possible - as in stir fry I still have a crunch to my veggies. So eating this amount is a LOT of chewing - ha! I think I'm just getting tired of chewing - ha!

This morning I started adding some starchy veggies back in ... starting with red potatos. I diced one up, chopped up green and red peppers, onions, fresh garlic and dry cooked those slightly in a green pan, tossed in some red beans till heated and before eating I chopped up some avocado on top, seasoned with lemon pepper - had raw carrots and some sliced tomatos on the side. After that I fixed my husband's 'regular' homemade hash browns (cooked in oil and butter) and a ham and cheese omelet. We do NOT eat the same thing anymore - ha! So lot of cooking!

I use to have a huge problem is I ate earlier before my husband came home - then I would snack, nibble eat more when he was eating his dinner. Also he has adapted the habit of having 'dessert' every night. Now I don't mind if I've eaten earlier - I am SO FULL - ha! I have started having a cup of herbal tea when he has his dessert - so far that is working! Oh - I don't LOOK at what he is eating either - ha!

Overall though I can honestly say so many of my cravings have disappeared and I am so happy and satisfied with how things are going ... I just HOPE they continue ...

Take care all! and thanks for being here for support!

Good to see you here Iamjoyful2. I like your idea of checking off the things on your list. It makes you see that although you might have slipped in some areas, you have done well in others. Al None of us are perfect and we are trying to find a healthy lifestyle that helps us lose weight but also keep it off.

So you are about half way through the 6 weeks - have you found it has got tougher? and if so in what ways.

I am just in my first week and so far, so good. I love the fact that I have more energy and I am sleeping better, not to mention the weight loss which will help my knee. I am concerned that I may get bored with what I am eating so I need to find lots of new ideas.

Day 19

Paced myself: no
Planned my meals: yes
Water: 6 cups
Motivation: good health, being slimmer and avoid getting diabetes
Mindless snacking: 1
Meals ate w/awareness: 3 out 4 - I ate dinner while watching tv and lost awareness

Reflection:
I need to follow my schedule
No watching TV while eating

When I was on ETL before, I tried to write a blog/journal most days and often I would include a photograph of my meals. I may try to do that again.

Welcome Tig. Glad to have another on this journey.

Jane, I way impressed that that ladies determined, planned out, and consistent way of going about her plan. She never tried to lose the weight fast. I always want immediate results so I need to remember her post.

I feel like Im coming down with a cold. Havent had one in several years and I hate this is happening at Christmas, but I guess there is no good time. So, lots of water, soups, and teas.

Hi TIG2009
Welcome to the team. I started ETL on Monday Dec 9 and it is my first time following the program. It is great to know that you had so much success last year. Congratulations for keeping off most of your weight loss and getting back to it with only 6lbs gained.

I hear what you are saying about bad habits creeping back in when you are busy. It is good that you recognized those habits because then you can come up with some strategies.

I have a question for you. Did you manage to eat everything that is listed? I am a volume eater but I cant get through 1lb raw AND 1lb cooked veggies especially as we are supposed to just have 3 meals.

I weigh in with some friends on a Thursday and I had lost 4.5lbs yesterday and that was since Monday so I am happy. I would like to lose 25lbs.

Keep in touch
Jane

I just started ETL yesterday, Dec 12th. So far so good. I tried it before last year at the same time. I lost 30 lbs in 3 months ... kept it off for awhile but after summer was over, I am up 6 lbs. So decided no time is better than now to start again. I know how much better I feel when I am eating better but sometimes life just gets so busy and bad habits come back. I am happy I only gained 6 lbs, with any other diet I have tried, I would gain all my weight and more back. I am ready to get this going and looking forward to eating better and feeling better. Is there anyone else in their 1st week?

If at first you don't succeed, try, try again :)

I meant to reply to your comment about what exercise to do if you can't get outside. There are some fabulous videos on this site. I often do them for a change. Also there are some good walking DVDs (by Leslie Sansome) you can buy - my friend uses these.

Good morning everyone. I cant believe how fast Chistmas is approaching. We do it pretty low key but I still have a few things to do.

Earnie - The same is good at least you didn't gain. As you say get through the tough challenges without too much damage and then focus in.

I was proud of myself yesterday as when my friends and I get together for our weekly weigh in we have a few applies. They are usually healthy or small portion sized as all of us are trying to lose weight. I took a plate of veggies with hummus. Another friend brought walnuts warm and roasted in their shells so I had 3-4 of those which was less than 1oz of my nuts. I love walnuts as they weigh so light. Each morning I weigh 1oz of mixed raw nuts and leave them in a little tub on my counter for the day so I can add them or just nibble one or two. I skipped the brownie bites and some other stuff.
I was also pleased because usually, once I have weighed in, that day is shot as regards my eating choices ( after all I have a week before I weigh in again!). But yesterday I stuck with the plan . emoticon
I have 3 Christmas events coming up. I am trying to plan and think ahead. I think I am going to put a little tub of chopped nuts in my purse as there is usually salad available.
I have definitely found that I have much more energy eating this way and also I seem to be sleeping better. Has anyone else found that?

Have a great day everyone

The scale stayed the same this morning. That shows my erratic food in take for the last couple of days. I'm taking the attitude that I just have to get through the weekend with the least damage possible and do better next week. Holidays are a tough time for any type of diet.

Jane, the restaurant I went to had a wonderful salad. It was a kale, shredded Brussels sprouts, carrots, broccoli, etc. Very filling and perfect. Tomorrow is a dinner party that I know wont be ETL, but I will just choose to eat very lightly and Saturday is another party, but that will be cocktails and appetizers and I really wont have to eat anything. After that, I think most of our parties are over and I can have more control over what I eat.

Jules, I began ETL in mid March 2011 and lost 9 pounds in six weeks and went on to lose 22+ pounds total. I kept that weight off for over a year, but slowly went back to eating anything and everything and gained most of that back. I even recently tried low carb and I just couldnt handle that and I didnt lose any weight. I now hope to lose 10 pounds and keep it off with ETL and exercise.

Aloha Everybody ~

WELCOME Jules! Good to see you here. You can help us I'm sure having been through the 6 Week Challenge before. And we'll support you getting back into the swing of it! Glad to have you join us. The more the merrier!

Earnie - hope your day is going well ... and Jane is right - shopping does burn calories - ha!

Jane - I think we're on the same page starting this prior to holidays ... it was too scary for me to think of how much more I'd be dealing with if I did not. CONGRATULATIONS on your weight loss ... so good for 3 days!

Jules - I am new to ETL - but have been eating vegan since June of this year but not really dropping weight (cheating and too many grains and such I think). I went vegan to: 1) lower blood pressure, 2) to be healthier and subsequently 3) lose weight. I've achieved the first one, making progress on the second, and soooooooooooooooo grateful for ETL and this 6 week challenge as I feel it is the answer for me. I've been doing the challenge since 12/7 so will be weighing in Saturday to see what's happening pound-wise!

Been working in the yard today and will walk later if it doesn't rain. I ordered an exercise dvd from the library - something I can do inside maybe in this 'small space' I live in for when I'm rained out - ha!

Have a good day all!

Hi Everyone

Welcome to the ETL team Jules. We are glad to have you on board. emoticon

Earnie emoticon - Down again! You are doing so well even with your challenging schedule.. I hope the crowds weren't too bad when you were shopping. I hate crowds so I always try to go first thing in the morning. All the walking around is extrea activity so that will help burn the calories. Did you manage to find some relatively healthy food choices?

DJ - that was a really good choce to go out for a walk when you were feeling "snacky". The feeling often passes if we can take our mind off the food. Someone I was talking to this morning was telling me that he hates cardio, so when he is tempted to eat that extra cookie he looks at how much longer he will have to spend on the treadmill to work it off and that usually helps him make the best decision,

Well I did my weigh in with my friends this morning DOWN 4.5lbs emoticon . I know I gained 5.8 over Thanksgiving but I am really happy with this week - especially as that is after only 3 days on ETL. I love this program and I am going to stick to it as closely as I can but if I have a Seasonal event to go to I am just going to do my best - after all there are 21 meals in the week and if I can stick with it on 18 I am still ahead of the game.

Someone asked me why did I start now, just before Christmas and I told them, that if I hadn't I would have had a whole lot more weight to lose in the New Year.

Hope you are all having a great day. See you later.
Jane

Morning, I've been a sparkie for years but just joined this team. How long have you been doing ETL and if you have done the 6 week plan what were your results? For me, I have read ETL twice. The first time I did the 6 week plan strictly by the book and lost 9 pounds. I was discouraged and went back to eating anything and everything. After some good talking to myself, I am back on the plan and as I look back I sure wish I would have stayed on the plan. 9 pounds for me was ok and I should have been happy with that. I won't be such a spoiled brat this time and accept the weight loss I get. My biggest challenge is planning my meals and preparing food. Have a great day.

Jules

Morning all. EVEN when you don't eat strictly by the ETL, good things happen. The scale this morning was registering down again .8!!! My kind of diet. I just need to remember that. I have a full day ahead of me with my friend's medical appointment and then shopping. I hope the crowds are not too bad, but I think that is a bit much to ask.

DJ you make me homesick. We owned a small condo on Maui for many years and only sold it when we decided to retire here in Tennessee rather than Maui. But we go back when we can and we miss it.

Hi Jane and Earnie ~

Jane - GOOD FOR YOU - passing up nibbling on your grandson's toast and cheese - bread and cheese use to be my favorites! I sometimes have to 'look away' when my husband is having his grilled cheese sandwiches. Good luck on your weigh-in tomorrow!!! I'm looking forward to for you - ha!

Earnie - I'm sure you'll make the best possible choices - you seem to have a good handle on that! I'm going to have to really learn how to eat out. When we do go to the larger towns (Kona or Hilo) there are actually some really healthy places to eat but unfortunately my husband is not 'into' that. He is supportive of my eating this way but he will never be converted and I wouldn't try - ha!

I think my energy is up too ... it never did rain so Daisy and I went out for another walk. We did 16 min/1,585 steps this time ... we did not do the 'hill' however - I didn't want to overdo my knee 'tolerance'.

I use to have a Pilates reformer ... we sold it when moving back to the islands as we downsized yet again (3rd time in the last 20 odd years) ... we finally do live very simply and happily. But that's another story ... ha!

I decided to get back out for another walk as for some odd reason I was feeling 'snacky' - not hungry - just snacky ... the walk resolved that issue!

Okay - have a good evening and see ya'll tomorrow!

Another challenge tomorrow. I have to drive an elderly neighbor to a medical appointment in a town 90 miles away (Nashville) and so will be eating lunch out. I'll do the best I can.

Hi DJ
How wonderful that your neighbour noticed that you have lost some weight. emoticon I love it when people notice. Like me you probably have a bunch of clothes that you just cant fit into at the moment. I am looking forward to revisiting that part of my closet. I agree good health is the most important part of this especially as we get older.
Sounds like you are doing really well with your water intake and your walk sounds like it was a good workout. It is great that you are able to do more each day. I must admit that since I started eating like this I have got more energy. I did try yoga a while back but I found that I was often not able to transition from one move to the next. For several years I have done Pilates and I love it. Currently I have to do it at home as I cannot do all the moves in the class and I am using the videos on Spark People to keep it going. The other thing I do is Aquafit which I love.
On Wednesdays I look after my 2 year old Grandson emoticon and it is very easy to nibble on his leftover food. emoticon I felt very proud of myself today as I stuck to my food and resisted the cheese and toast that he didn't eat. I had a smoothie with banana/blueberries almond milk and spinach for breakfast. For lunch I had a pile of raw veggies with hummus and a mandarin orange. Tonight I am going to have a huge veggie stirfry(cooked in broth) with beans.

Weigh in tomorrow morning - emoticon I am excited (its the first time I've said that for a while). I feel that I have lost weight even though I have only been following this since Monday.

Will let you know tomorrow. Have another good day.

Jane emoticon

Earnie - Congratulations on your 0.4lb weight loss. emoticon I think sometimes we feel that we have blown it and then we eat everything in sight. In fact we have done fine and the secret is not to throw in the towel as that is when we do the damage. It sounds like you have come to this realization and that is great.
I am looking forward to my weigh in tomorrow. Although I only started ETL on Monday I do feel as though I have lost.

Keep up the good work!

Okay - I'm back already - ha!

So today for breakfast had a bowl of slightly sauted apple pieces with red beans mixed in, sweetened slightly with about 1/2 tsp of agave in a bit of water in the pan, bits of buttercrunch lettuce tossed into the bowl with the cooked mixture and a sprinkle of cinnamon. I know it sounds weird but just using what I have available - ha!

Lunch will be a big mixed bunch of different lettuces with purple onions and topped with a pea salad made with peas, onions, tomatos, garlic and a bit of vegan nayonaise and lots of spices. Also a lot of lettuces with papaya diced up and tossed on top with a bit of basalmic vinegar.

Dinner is a chickpea veggie combo I made yesterday - all kinds of veggies in it. Will have a big salad too.

So far today I've had 6 glasses of water (did make it to 8 yesterday!). I've found if I fill my water glass first thing in the morning and drink it before anything else it gives me a jump start on water quota. I use a 16 oz glass and water is room temp.

Daisy and I just came in from walking - we did 23min/2,374 steps ... however my knees were feeling pretty good so we did part of our walking downhill. Coming back up was sooooo good cardiowise! I haven't been able to even attempt this hill for months and months so thrilled about that.

A neighbor stopped me - she said I looked like I was losing weight! I'm sure a lot of it is losing bloating and such from water retention possibly prior to starting ETL6WK. But it's nice it's maybe showing up physically. She encouraged me said I could get new clothes soon - told her I'm not into getting new clothes - just GOOD HEALTH!!!!!!!! That is the reward I'm shooting for...

As for clothes - I'll throw a bunch in hot water and dryer and hope they shrink - ha!

Okay - see you tomorrow - everyone have a great day/evening!

Aloha Everybody ...

You did great for eating out Earnie - what a reward this morning when weighing in - ha! I find eating out is the hardest but at least most restaurants are trying to offer more healthy options now than in the past. We have about 3 places to eat in our little town - one is a wonderful bakery that I can't go near - even when not a vegan or on ETL...I could easily gain pounds just being there - ha! The other may have some better choices in foods but is a bit pricey and our favorite is 'local' style food - which is so good but not how I need to eat. So I rarely eat out.

Jane - I cannot believe how our stories parallel. I had to grin (with understanding) at your 5.8 lb weight gain over Thanksgiving holiday ... I'm always amazed at people that say they gain 10-15 lbs in a year - I can do that far too easily in a month! But that was then and this is now...

I'm still waiting for the book from the library - I'm 3rd on the list. But so happy with all the resources, info and support available here.

My mother had knee and hip replacement, my sister is walking with a cane. I've had knee problems for longer than I like to admit but it's better now than in the past.

I don't know if it's a coincidence or due to how I've been eating the past 5 days but I can tell some inflammation in my knees has gone down considerably.

We have sketchy sun this morning and dark rainy looking clouds moving in so I'm going to post a few more things then Daisy and I will walk again.

Do you do yoga? I'm just getting back into it but I found it helps my knee situation as well. I can't do all poses but over time it gets better and better and I can ease into it.

I'm itchin' to get on my scales - ha! But won't for two more days...
take care!

Morning all. I was very pleased to see the scale down .4 this morning despite last night's dinner out.

If something is holding us back, today is the day to begin to push back. Today is always the best day to end the fears and begin being the best you.

At the end of every road there is something worth seeing.
