This was a great article. It even reminded me that I used to get produce delivered to my door (organic, local, etc) but wasn't eating all of it and stopped delivery. I bet I would eat it all now! And it would be good to try new stuff. I am going to have to try to find them again!

BURRITAELITA: Congrats on reversing your type 2 diabetes. I do not have diabetes but everyone in my mom's family did and she does so I am worried about my future.

I have impressed my doctor by my blood test results, indicating that I reversed my Type 2 diabetes. However, he turns a deaf ear when I saw "plant-based," concluding that it was weight loss alone, I guess. Still, I think if enough of us say the same thing, he may start thinking that there is something to this...

The most effective health-care is self-care.

Nutrition is the prescription.

You can literally stretch your lifespan by shrinking your waistline.

Nutrition and other lifestyle factors that you can choose are a more significant determinant of your health than genetics.

Filling your stomach with high-nutrient foods is like by-pass surgery without the surgery.

We are all born with an innate desire to not only survive but thrive.

Thanks for posting. I remember an article about 2 years ago that Ruby Tuesday and some other restaurants were no longer going to be offering some healthy options. Upon reading the article, when they offered the healthy options no one ordered them, so they eliminated them. If people ate them most would have been added. They do listen.

Yeah, I'd like to show him I'm compliant diet-wise so that he is on board with my decision not to take meds (unless the blood sugar levels can't be controlled in spite of a good diet.)

Wolfgang: When I started doing ETL I stopped using the tracker. For while I was listing what I was eating just so I could look back on it but now I don't even do that. It just got to be more trouble than it was worth. I can see your point of wanting it for your doctor though.

I agree with much of what is written below. And I too love SP for the community support and tools offered. I have esp. noticed the weight loss emphasis since I was diagnosed with DT2 and decided I need to eat for maximum health. The part I have a hard time with is the nutrition tracking (now, never did before when all I was looking at was the calories and breakdown.) Now I don't care so much about calories etc. but would still like a food log to show my doctor.

Anyway, nice article, thanks for pointing it out.

There tends to be more focus on weight loss than health. But the truth is - that's what most people want. They want to lose weight and lose it NOW! There's really nothing that is geared towards being vegan, and very little vegetarian except what we create for ourselves. The beauty of Spark is each individual can make it whatever they want!

Our little corner of the world here at ETL is one of my favorite places!!

Shell: I like a lot of the articles at Spark but I agree about the advertising. Several times I have seen an ad on the site and thought it was out of place. For a while they were advertising diet pills which really turned me off. BUT... the site is free and supports a lot of people so I guess that's the price to pay. I find a lot of the recipes aren't the healthiest either. I love the community though and all the tools.

Shell - It does seem that much Spark stuff is just the lesser of two evils. Like many people and diet plans I think they support the theory of "all things in moderation."

For some people that may be enough. For those of us seeking maximum health, that doesn't work.

I don't want to sound negative because I love Spark People as it has given me resources for my regaining my health but they seem to push some very unhealthy choices. There is a lot of "which one of these bad for you items are not quite the worst for you " rather than good for you. No money in advertising veggies and fruits etc. I guess.
So the article you just shared is refreshing. It is so true we vote with our money and our forks.... Thanks for sharing. emoticon
