Im new to ETL. I really dont like raw veggies, but Ive been eating them. Is it ok to use hummus with the raw veggies? for one pound of veggies I tend to use 3-4 tbsp of hummus

Well I have done better with eating the vegetables this week! Also eating at least a cup of beans a day has helped with hunger. I bought the dried beans and have been soaking and cooking them up at home. It is cheaper and I am not so worried about the BPA which is in a lot of the cans.

Thanks for the ideas on how to eat the large quantities of veggies. I have done better this week, although we have come away for the weekend, and have struggled a bit. Will be easier again when I get back to my usual routine.

Hello everyone! emoticon

I had been vegan for over 2 years before starting the 6 week plan, so my detox wasn't too bad, but I did notice I was on an emotional roller coaster for absolutely no reason during the second or third week or so. I have had so much more energy; I am finally losing weight (still was having trouble losing when eating vegan); AND I have gotten off of most of my medications and am working on the rest (as well as a multitude of supplements). I have an appointment at the Fuhrman Associates coming up to help me figure it all out. I am so excited about it all.
I have had occasional lapses with chocolate (and peanut butter) - which eventually lead me into mood swings and increased excema and ear pain, but I still want more (what is WRONG with me?)!

I have NEVER liked cooking, so this plan is quite a challenge, as I am spending more time than ever preparing meals. I have really enjoyed so many of the new recipes that I have tried, but finding those quick and easy Go-To meals has been a very slow process. I do love the new direction my life is taking now, but I admit that it is a big challenge in our SAD oriented world!!

Hi! I am so glad I've discovered ETL. I am combining it with the Full Plate Diet. I still find it difficult to plan meals without meat and grains being the main players of the meal. But it is getting easier.

If I have difficulty planning the meals for the day, I open up the Full Plate E-book (free from fullplatediet.org) and flip through the pages that show the top fiber winners with beautiful pics, and then the pages that suggest how to take what you usually like to eat and increase your fiber intake. I usually come away with ideas to combine my ETL refrigerator choices into something delicious.

My biggest problem is eating all the food. Tonight I could only eat my salad. I was not able to even look at my plate of cauliflower or rice/blueberry/yogurt salad. I'll have to work them in to tomorrow/s plan.

So, I'm not too worried about it yet, but if it continues, I'm concerned with the low calorie intake slowing down my weight loss. (1005 of the 1210 minimum for today).

I'm not expecting that to continue after another couple of weeks when I'm expecting to be released from my "no 5K training" by the podiatrist after the new orthotics come in. When I can walk in earnest again, I'll probably be starving.

Kimberlang; I felt the same way all day.I have felt on the edge of starving. I made a big salad with an apple and avacado and mushrooms. The avacado really made my stomach feel good. If it helps yeah!

i felt sick and starving all day again, i finally ate a peanutbutter sandwich (no jelly whole wheat bread), I figure i will get my stomach used to all the raw food and gas (even though I have always eaten alot of veggies I never really ate much fruit and beans). my galbladder is giving me alot of problems which always happens when I clean it out with healthy eating but I know that will ease up in a week. Still sticking to it the best I can if I can't wean myself slowly by friday I can go hardcore sat because I will be off work for 6 days. So I can deal with the pain better when i don't have to work and come home to 3 small kids.

You are probably getting rid of toxins and poisons, so your system will feel like you are sick, but stick with it you will feel a lot better once you eliminate the bad stuff. Drink lots of water. That may help with the yucky feelings, too, because that will flush all the poisons out.

Sometimes people have some bad days at first. I had a little tiredness and sweating, but that lasted just a few days, then it was over. I've heard of others having more issues.

Maybe ease into the plan if you have started the strict 6 week plan.

Anyone have any suggestions?

I've been on this plan for almost 3 weeks, had a lot of "oops" moments the first two weeks, but am now on track. In spite of those roadbumps, I have still lost 11 pounds. The thing that seems to work best for me is preparing greens and veggies for several days in a row, and being able to grab and go to fix a meal. I also have been measuring my oats and flaxseeds with chia seeds into snack size bags and keeping them in the fridge. I just add coconut milk or pomegrante juice and berries with a sprinkle of cinnamon for a quick portable breakfast. I make sure the crockpot has beans or veggie and bean soup going constantly, so if I wanna "cheat" it's always on a safe food. Looking forward to better losses this next week. emoticon

I must amplify what GRINGUITA pointed out.
I weighed out a 1 lb green salad one day to calibrate a portion and it was a healthy size but not overly large. Tomatoes, peppers, celery, carrots, beets, weigh quit a bit. And you can spread that out over multiple meals, smoothies etc. Same with the cooked vegetables. Don't forget your soup has vegetables.

You may be coming closer to the goal than you think. And as long as you are not filling up instead on the less healthy foods then it doesn't matter of you don't make it because you are not going hungry.

Dr Fuhrman recommends a pound of raw veggies and a pound of cooked veggies every day -- they don't all have to be "greens"!

Hello, I have been lurking for a long time, thought it was time to post! Have been vegetarian for 28 years, but only recently gave up (almost all) dairy. Losing weight very slowly, I have difficulty eating so much greens per day. I do eat salad every night, and vegetable soup at lunchtime, and a smoothie for breakfast. I just don't get through all that Dr. Fuhrman says we should be eating. I have read a lot of these posts and feel really encouraged by everyone! Thank you emoticon

checking in! I am sticking with 6 week plan. I didn't watch it as close the first 3 weeks and dropped #s but I am thinking it was a lot of water weight. I can feel the bones in my hands. I didn't think it would happen that fast. I fixed a huge salad and ate the whole thing but then I was not hungry for 6 hours. Who knew! One thing, when I do get hungry, I need to eat. So I love the fact that I have pot of beans to throw in the micro when I need a meal quick.

I know I am late in getting around to replying to your thread, but I have been out of town for the first half of October and I am now fighting a gall stone so haven't been feeling too much up to being on the computer very long at a time.

I have been a vegetarian for about 11 months. I have lost weight - about 45 pounds and I do have trouble losing for some reason, but I decided it was more important to work on my problems than it was to lose weight, but the weight had been affected which I will gladly accept. I eat mostly raw, but do eat beans. I like black bean burgers and have them quite a lot. I eat raw mostly so that my enzymes from the good go to solving my health problems. I have almost reversed my diabetes. I have had some improvements in my vision (I have cataracts, retinopathy, swelling retinas and a detached retina). I do green smoothies and juice when my juicer was working. The detached retina has improved, too. In January all I could see was light and dark, but now I can see colors, especially the light colors. I can watch my hands crocheting, but I cannot see the hook or the yarn.

Good luck. It will happen if you stay with the program. By the way, I make a mustard dressing without oils. I mix mustard, red wine vinegar, some Stevia, and coconut or almond milk or water to make a good mustard dressing - all to taste.

The weight will come off, but again, for some of us it just takes a little longer.

Thanks June and Kate

I appreciate your input very much. I am not in the least disheartened. Quite the contrary, I am encouraged because I thought it would be much harder to give up animal products and processed foods, especially milk and sweets. The natural foods have worked to keep me from any cravings. I love it! I know I may face cravings at some point, but the benefits I am gaining far outweigh any short terms pleasure I might derive from eating off the plan.

I do realize that the more slowly I lose, the less likely I am to regain the weight. I will try to remind myself of that when I get impatient. As I said, I went into this more for the health benefits than the weight loss aspect.

Thanks again for the welcome and the advice :)

Welcome GLASSGIRL.
Like June I always reply to new members who are a little disheartened by their rate of weight loss. While june has reached her goal, I have just recently started (2 months ago) and I am a slow looser also. I started at about 1 lb per week but felt very good and quite quickly lost my desire for the processed carbs. I went on to become quite strict with my following of the plan, no oil (even on salad), I don't exceed 1 cup beans, cut out snacks, and only very rarely eat grains and starchy vegetables. This picked up my weight loss a little so now I'm at about 1.5 to 2 lb per week. I don't mind being forced to lose slowly because I know it will serve me better in the long run.

No snacks means I have more room for the 1lb raw and 1lb cooked and I manage to eat it many days.

The hype in the book about the aggressive weight loss does not apply to everyone and maybe not even to most. Dr Fuhrman is not immune to the need to sell.

Good luck with this - I have not heard anyone say they don't feel better eating this way.

Welcome Glass Girl!

I don't believe I get the suggested amounts of raw/cooked veggies and fruits, but I make effort to get as much without being suffed. I also try to eat at least 1 cup of some sort of bean a day. My weight came off ever so slow, but I reached goal and am maintaining, so it is possible.

One of the best sidebars of this plan for me was a dramatic reduction in my craving for refined carbs (sweets/breads/pastries etc etc). I have eliminated them from my diet with the exception of possibly a special occassion and in the past 4 months, that has been not more than 3 times!!

Following ETL has also become easier and time has gone by, so ETL is my main food plan these days!

Good luck with your weight loss. I hope many is your medical issues will lessen as time goes by as well.

Aloha, June emoticon

Hi there
I'm Sylvia and I have been following ETL for three weeks now. I have 100+ pounds to lose and currently suffer from hypertension, fibromyalgia, arthritis, and Primary Sjogren's Syndrome (an autoimmune disorder). I started this new way of life primarily to resolve my health issues or at least to improve them. I am hoping for the added benefit of massive weight loss over time.

I am loving the new diet but am finding it difficult to eat all the recommended amounts of food each day. One pound each of raw and cooked green veggies, PLUS a cup of beans seems like a massive amount of food to me. Even if I somehow craved process foods or sweets, I'd have no room for them! So far, I have been pleasantly surprised that I haven't had my usual cravings for sweets. My breakfast smoothie of kale, banana, and frozen fruit with almond milk seems to quell my sweet tooth. I haven't missed milk or meat at all.

I haven't lost as much weight (maybe 3 pounds) as I thought I would have so far, considering the huge salads and other veggies I consume each day. My only 'cheats' have been my morning cup of coffee (with soy milk) and my use of 2 tbl. of commercial honey mustard dressing on my salads. Do you think that would make a big difference in weight loss? I need to find a palatable dressing recipe.

I made my favorite split green pea soup for dinner. With a yummy greens salad, including an apple, I hit my targets. And, this morning, it was oatmeal with cranberries, walnuts, pumpkin and flax seeds.

It's a beautiful sunny day in the Mountains. The foliage is beyond peak here but there is still some nearer the Coast. I hope everyone has a wonderful day.

Hi, i'm new here, just started easing into this plan a week ago and now am ready to go hard core and follow plan to the letter. The hardest thing for me is giving up salty tastes, really crave it on beans and veg. I have found a chip calles "Beanitos" made from beans and rice with very low sodium. Are they ok on ETL? emoticon

Thanks Gottaplan4u: I have a batch in the oven. It sure is better than any of the "bagged stuff" from the store. I also like soy nuts and, like you, I have to be careful with portion. I do cound them as veggies - but not the full pound. emoticon

Hi, my husband Khyber and I just started the ETL eating plan with supper last night and we're totally loving it so far. I also have a super huge bonus in that Khyber is so into it that he is doing all the shopping and cooking so far! (Well almost, I made a creamy cauliflower soup for breakfast - creamy as in pureed, not cream from a cow creamy.) We're eating gigantic salads with all kinds of stuff in them.

Khy’s Monday salad
spring green mix
kale
celery
carrots
green beans
scallions
flax seeds
dressing: sesame ginger dressing
(tahini, dates, ginger, crushed red pepper flakes, mango chutney & tamari instead of white miso!)

Keeping my fingers crossed that the scale is going to be encouraging as we keep going. I'd like to hear other people's weight loss experiences with ETL.

I have looked for dried garbonza beans but haven't found them. I recall seeing them in one of our markets, but so far, no luck. For now I'm buying the canned and draining. I think roasted beans sound delish, and probably something I would eat way more than I should.

Aloha, June

I soak and cook my garbanzos from dried. If you use canned then just rinse them well and dry them.
Regular recipes say coat lightly with olive oil and bake for 30-40 minutes at 400 deg. Use what ever spices you like. Most common is salt, garlic powder, cayenne.

I don't use oil or salt. Possibly the spray-on olive oil would not be too bad, especially if you have enough self control to not eat the whole batch.

Actually I don't make these anymore because I eat too many and also I gave up snacks. emoticon

P.S. sounds like you are off to a good start on the program

Good day today. Stayed on track, drinking last of water now, and got to the health food store to get some seeds and nuts that I couldn't find at the regular grocery store. They also had the most delicious pears I've eaten in a long time.
Someone mentioned they were roasting garbanza beans. Canned? What temp? How long? Spices on them? I can't find my recipe. They were a great snack when I was traveling. emoticon

I know this isn't what you want to hear but the only way I could give up those kinds of treats was to keep them out of my house while I did the 6-week plan. Then I started juicing and made a glass of carrot and apple juice my snack treat.

I haven't indulged in the chocolate sweet, pastries, cakes, pies, etc. etc., because I know exactly how I am and I will be in trouble....those are my weaknesses!!!

One thing though that is healthy, and I can have without guilt, is a really thick smoothie. I normally put in is frozen blueberries, frozen banana and fresh green plus cold water and artificial sweetener. I blend it so it is very very thick and that really satisfies my sweet tooth, plus it fills me up!

I work out a lot at the gym, so recently, I added a small amount of protein whey power (I don't know if that is kosher on the ETL plan, but I did it), and that made the smoothie a bit creamier and more like a shake!

I like it better without the powder, but at least 2x a week, I mix with the power due to my workout routine.

I will eat this in the evening as a special treat and love a healthy smoothie.

Hope this helps.

Aloha, June

Yes it is in the "Eat to Live" book. Basically it is a very strict version of his life plan with the purpose of providing immediate positive motivation with good weight loss (he calls it aggressive weight loss). It also is a means of detoxing your body, getting it used to a lot of plant food and allowing you to get to the healthy feeling quickly. He prescribes a lot of food volume so there is no hunger involved. It is chapter 8 in the 2011 version.

I eat a vegetarian diet about 75-80% of the time. My husband is vegetarian, so it's easier to cook that way. I have bought "Eat to Live" but haven't read it yet. Is the 6 week challenge you've mentioned in the book? I would like to lose 5-10 pounds, but mostly would like to learn to eat more healthfully. People think because we don't eat meat we eat healthfully. Not true (as I'm sure you know). We can eat a lot of "junk" without eating meat. I have been experimenting with some new recipes (especially quinoa recipes) and trying to do better. VERY interested in the 6 week challenge.

Just joined this team. I've been eating this way for four days now, and my super slow weight loss has sped up a bit. I didn't know it, but I've been looking for this all my life! And I've tried everything!! This one just makes so much sense! I plan to check in from time to time to update my progress. I'm so glad this group is here!

Thanks for the welcome...maybe this will work being that dropping the weight is not first and foremost...number one..I love fruit and vegetables...it will be my salt and coffees that will be the most hard to deal with. Never been much of a meat eater...grains might be a problem...as I get a little older, I must look after my self...just want some of my energy back...so good luck to all emoticon

Congratulations on reaching your goal June!

I also am a slow loser. It has taken me since January to lose my 10 pounds. I know ETL is my life style, but sometimes I want to veer off a little. Last night at my grandson's 6th birthday party, I ate a wiener and a little chili with my salad. Everyone was enjoying chili dogs, and of all the junk food that I still crave, it's hotdogs. Wrong thing to do. Today I'm miserable with crampy tummy and IBS symptoms. When you've given up junk food, your body rebels when you try it again. At least that ought to keep me on track for a while!

well I am here for reals now
This morning I actually had some ideas to do low carb- Atkins style. I think I just wanted eggs
Well it got to the point where I thought I should toss a coin. I know low carb works - well I figured I would do that and then go towards Eat to live as you get to eat more carbs in the phases- so I made my omelet with mushrooms, red pepper and spinach and 3 eggs and as I was eating it I realized I like the veggies more than the eggs. I then opened my fridge and saw the raw seeds and nuts in bags and in my freezer bags of berries and I thought what am I crazy? emoticon Any plan that is not going to allow green smoothies for a couple of weeks is not what I need and I do realize that I need structure of some kind- what I like witht his is that well first of all HEALTHY! and also it has an outline but you don't need to count carbs or net carbs or even calories although I have in the past asn it comes out to about 1200-1500 in a day which is perfect-
alright I am diving into this at my next meal which is a salad and chickpeas! emoticon
