I took one day off from exercise over the weekend. There could also have been some improvement in what I ate over the weekend, but oh, well...

This week I am going to try to increase the distance I cover in my 30 minute walks.

I am going to limit the number of days we eat out to TWO. My son will not be pleased.

Soon I will head to the grocery store to stock up on the fruits and veggies I will need for the week.

Dinners:(parentheticals for my boys, not me)
(1) (BBQ Chicken), salad, brocolli, leftover chard and veg medley with beans added
(2) Burrito bar with (chicken) fajitas, onions, peppers, refried beans, shredded lettuce, avocado, tomatos
(3) Hamburgers (meat), (macaroni and cheese), peas, salad
(4) (Waffles, bacon), fruit salad, potatoes, peppers and onions
(5) Baked sweet potatoes, frozen veg mix, beans, salsa and coriander

My son picked the waffles as one of his choices. I thought it was an interesting choice.

Hi guys,

I've hit a bit of a slump. I know exactly what to do, what to eat, how much to eat, how to exercise, how much to exercise. It's feeling a bit redundant and tiring. Now sure where to go to change it up. I've got a big surgery coming up in two weeks, I don't want anything so new that I can't stick to it. May I should stay with what I'm doing for now.

Any ideas?

I will be traveling this week. Lot's of down time in airports. It's so hard to eat healthy, but I know of some good spots in a couple of them. I'll bring along some fruit and chopped veggies to snack on during the long legs of my flights. I'm spending a couple of days in DC and plan to visit the museums, so at least I'll get lots of walking in! Hope everyone has a wonderful week!

I drink loads of water. I start my day before drinking or eating anything with 1 liter of water. I do have problems with sleeping off and on, I wake up a lot. I eat basically the same thing every day I haven't really differentiated in what I eat. I am also wondering about the wheat. I found this, and I don't eat any of these foods. Gluten may be my next exploration.

1. Carbs--Certain foods put a damper on your energy because they release glucose into the bloodstream quickly after consumption. White rice, mashed white potatoes, pasta and white bread are key examples. These are referred to as "high glycaemic index" foods and they may make you feel very tired.
2. Fats--Fried foods, meats with a high fat content, and oily snack foods, such as cheese curls, corn chips and potato chips, can bring on the yawns. That's because you are making your digestive system work harder than usual to process the fats. Eating a meal of high-fat meat, sauces, and cheese toppings can really make you feel robbed of energy once you leave the table.
3. Sugary Foods--Last but certainly not least are energy-zapping sugary foods. These include cakes, doughnuts, candy, ice cream, pudding and cookies. The real culprit is all that refined sugar. These foods raise your blood sugar levels. Your body in turn releases insulin, which triggers tryptophan. The chain of events continues to worsen, where the tryptophan is converted into serotonin. This last component is the neurotransmitter in your brain that tells your body "We're tired. Slow down."

None of this is on my food list.

make sure your drinking water

On the days you have low energy see what did you eat that is different from the days you do have energy cause it could be one or more food that making you lose energy, cause of the way your body reacts to that food.

oh yea can't forget to get good sleep.

I have been doing super in my daily walks 1 mile a day, sometimes 2. And I have been eating clean for 5 weeks 3 days. But I on some days feel no energy? I feel I am missing something, I stay within the guidelines of my nutrition, sometimes fall short in some categories, seems like I am always going over in fiber, on days I have legumes and fish or poultry. Protein is hard for me to get the full amount, fall short there too, mainly because not only trying to get healthy but lose weigh as well. Anyone out there have any suggestions on energy building? Some days I can jump up and have beau coup energy. And some days I feel wiped. I have dropped dairy, sugars and white foods, and all red meats from my plan. I eat a lot of vegetables and fruits, and 1 grain, 1 legume a day. This mystifies me, I thought eating right helps spark energy.

I get so bored with exercise too. I try to make it a time when I can also watch a show that I otherwise wouldn't make time for in a busy day.

Jumping back in to the group in the hopes it will help with my motivation. Over the last year the sweets, breads and salt have crept back into my diet. And exercise has nearly disappeared since school started. I need to reorganize my day. I am going to try not showering until after my son leaves for school today. It makes it kind of late to start my day, but we will see how it goes.

When I exercise I tend to walk/run, play tennis, and I used to play Dance Dance Revolution on the Wii. Maybe I need to fire that up again... I tend to get really bored during exercise.

I plan to do an elimination diet so I will no longer be trying to do Eat to Live. I need to focus on what is triggering my IBS. I still plan to eat lots of fruits and vegetables and get a serving of flaxseed a day. The rest will have to wait.

Hello! Loaded up my fridge yesterday with whatever fruits & veggies looked good at costco. Will still need to buy a few more things for the recipes in the book but getting a good start for the weekend start date. Am already eating ETL breakfast but have more organizing to do before I can do a whole day's worth of ETL meals. Really looking forward to beginning! Will be making a consultation appointment today for my son with RA - guess they are out a few weeks on that, though. Off to work! Have good day!!

Rough day...it started out great with a trip to the OB with NO kids...and nice 39 minute Non-Stress test, which means a 30 minute nap for me! Then Dr. said she thinks baby will be small (5-7 lbs). That's what I expected for my ETL baby. But surprisingly, when I told her I was having contractions, she wasn't that worried about it - she thinks I'm far enough along for baby to be healthy.

And then....

I went to go pick up the kiddos from my mother-in-law's. On the way to the car I was carrying my 14 month old in my hand when my foot rolled off the sidewalk and I pitched forward. I slammed down right on top of the baby and thought I had cracked her head against the cement. I was imagining a severe concussion/skull fracture. But when I picked her up, there was no knot, and then she stopped crying after about 15 seconds!

I had been carrying a sippy cup in my right hand up by her shoulder, and I think the cup hit the ground, and pushed her head down by my arm (that's the practical explanation - the real explanation can only be the protection of The Lord). Since then I've been caressing her little round head and kissing her chubby cheeks. God is Good!

As for me, I scraped my left elbow and knee pretty bad, and I have a bruise on my upper stomach where I landed on her feet, but baby has been kicking regularly so I know he'd doing fine.

He who began a good work in you will be faithful to complete it.

I've been dating a guy with an empty refrigerator. I don't have a car so next time he picks me up I'm taking a large bag of fruits and vegetables with me. I had two bites of chocolate about a quarter of a candy bar and not I'm running to the bathroom. I know I'm lactose intolerant, but I didn't think such a small amount would do so much hard.

I'm going to do a wheat free diet for a few days and see if it helps with my stomach issues. I know that gluten free granola is easily available and there is always rice. I can make my own salad dressing as well.

Hello everyone,

I'm on week 5 of the "6 week plan", I intend to have it be the forever plan.

As I knew I would, when visiting with friends or family, they think it's odd that I just won't eat a hot dog or have a piece of cake.

Just wondering how do you deal with visiting and people's expectations of what is "normal" eating?
Have a great day.

Had a Dr appointment on Friday. Went for blood work, so I'm waiting to see where I stand on cholesterol. I've had high levels in the past and I'm anxious to see the effects of ETL on those numbers. I'm in my 6th week of the program and I'm down 15 pounds. Happy with that!

Nuts and seeds tend not to agree with me so I have to keep the portions very small. I plan to focus on fitness and let the weight do as it will. I'm trying to incorporate more intuitive eating in my plan. I don't force myself to eat when I'm not interested and I eat when I'm hungry. Yesterday, I ate a meal of poor quality food and was still below my calorie range. Then, again, I couldn't get all my fruit or a serving of beans yesterday. If I fall into a size 0, I'll buy new clothes again. I doubt that will happen.

My current weight is 116. The weight recommendation in ETL for me, 103. I have thirteen more pounds which doesn't seem like a lot when I dropped six pounds since the middle March without trying.

LOVESTOWALK - two things -- I seem to remember that you are very active with a lot of gym activity and walking. You may need to incorporate more nuts and starchy vegetables into your daily menus and be sure to eat whenever you are hungry. Second, the best-weight set point that can be achieved by plant based eating is often lower than SAD diets allow. This lower weight is one often associated with longer living. The key would be do you feel well and have lots of energy?

P.S. Dr Fuhrman's Never Get Sick Chocolate Cake would be a great addition to your menu. It is full of nutritious calories from nuts and dates.

I seem to need more calories than ETL program is designed for or I lose weight. I know that I can still lose some weight and be healthy. I suppose I like being a size 2. I bought more clothes at this size than I have at any other on my way down. I've looked at stores and size 0 is very hard to find. I shouldn't be concerned about clothing sizes but health. I feel healthy at a size 2. I don't need to get smaller. I seem to be at two minds about losing weight. I like seeing smaller numbers on the scale, but I know I shouldn't.

Lydia ~ don't know if you have a Whole Foods near you. I purchased a salad dressing that was made from figs, blackberries, and balsamic vinegar. The brand name was Bella's and it was really tasty!
I also make my own just mixing balsamic vinegar and lemon juice and whatever herbs I feel like (basil, oregano, etc.). It's not bad either.

Good Luck!

I've been having a hard time finding oil-free salad dressings that taste good. Any suggestions? I would love to have some that I could purchase on the run!

Been too busy to read or post for a while, so consequently my eating has been a little off. Gained back 5 pounds. I've been combining ETL with Flat belly diet this week and started losing again! ETL works when you work with it and flat belly works when you work with it, but it's hard to combine the two. I have to substitute eggs when flat belly calls for meats, but paying attention to MUFAs can improve ETL for me.

Went shopping to replenish my fruit and vegetable supply. I can't understand how we are so close to the west coast (New Mexico) and have such a limited variety of fruits and vegetables here. Maybe because there is not demand? My husband is a Southwest Airlines employee so I can fly for free (space available). I think I'm going to start taking day trips once every two weeks or so to LA to hit up the farmer's markets there, fill up a huge suitcase with what I want and head home with it! So frustrating to go to the grocery store and not find what I want!

good luck with your "Super" shopping.

pomegranates are a big pain to get open but boy are they yummy. Keep flax seeds in the freezer.

I'm going to have to try some of the food mentioned Super Immunity. I've never bought pomegranates. I purchased flax seed before, but I left it to rot never eating it. I like mushrooms, but I like them raw, not cooked. Still, I love kale and other greens cooked or raw. I added fresh garlic and onions to my beans when I cook them. So I need to buy onions when I buy other fruits and vegetables. I'll have to make a list of foods to try since Super Immunity is a library book.

I made it through week 1 of eating clean and no chocolate cravings yet, whew!! I love the princples behind eat to live. I didn't have to clean up my diet that much, just saying no to chocolate was hardest. I already eat gluten free and going 100% meatless was easily done because it doesn't agree with me anyway and I am already dairy free...anyway, sometimes I sneak in a bite of this and that that isn't on my diet so I am learning just to say no totally. Gluten free chocolate chip cookies were the worse. I was eating lots of chocolate there for a while, not anymore, 1 week of no chocolate already.

I am on Week 3 of the 6 week plan. Yesterday, I decided I wanted a little snack, so I pulled out some cracker chips and chowed down (on the 20 per serving). Boy they were good! About 15 minutes later, I had a horrible headache and had to lie down for a few hours. It was a really good reminder about how crappy processed food is for our bodies. I'm glad I feel better today, and I won't be sneaking a snack like that again anytime soon!

I didn't get frozen vegetables at the grocery store. I didn't like the select. I bought a lot of fresh ones. I'm taking a rest day today. I'm starting the six week program as soon as I finish reading ETL. I hope I can start today. I'm eating more fruit, vegetables and beans already. I can't eat seeds and nuts due to my IBS. I'm looking into other sources of omega 3s.

I never understood that hunger in the throat thing. Doesn’t make any sense to me and I never felt anything I could relate to that. Of course, I have most likely never experienced severe hunger anyway. But Fuhrman’s plan work for me so I don’t worry about throat hunger.

LOVESTOWALK49 that sounds funny to tell some one they exercise to much...as far as doing exercise that your doing for other reasons, I count if I worked sooo hard that I'm very tiered and sweaty and it sounds like walking to work should count.

on Dr. Oz Dr. Fuhrman describes true hunger in your throat and neck area.

But I'm not sure when you start to feel true hunger but if you hungry (or maybe feel hungry) just eat something (healthy of course)

I think as you stop eating junk/processed foods and eating lots of fruits and veggies instead that is when you start feeling true hunger (this is my guess until I reread in his book)

Hello, I have a question about "true hunger". I don't believe I've felt it yet, and I'm not sure if I should just not eat until I do? (only eat when you're hungry). I'm stomach growling hungry right now, should I have my smoothie or should I wait to see if this true hunger kicks in eventually?
Thanks
Tomorrow is the end of week 2, down 9 lbs.

The personal trainer told me that I exercised too much. She didn't count my walking as transportation as exercise so I think she didn't like that I spent too many hours at the gym. I'm going to spend as many hours at the gym as I want. I paid for gym membership. I'm allowed to go to as many classes as I want and to use the equipment as I desire.

Anyway, I'm still eating too much of the food that my family buys or makes. I usually have to have one serving of something. After that, I'm not tempted by it. I can eat one muffin, one cookie or one slice of pie. However, doing without makes me stare at it and long for it. One piece does the trick. However, one slice of pecan pie is 500 calories. My roommate bought huge bagels. One is almost four ounces. I figure that I can eat one a day and not go over my calories.

I'm doing good with the fruit and vegetables. I need to cook more beans. I'll eat them if I make them.

I certainly got my exercise in today. My garden club took on the project of refurbishing a small park in the center of town and today was day one of taking up all the day lilies and decorative grass and dividing everything. We amended the soil and tilled and fertilized and then began the replanting. We will have to work at least one more day to finish planting all the the new plants.

I need a long hot, soaking bath and a scrub brush. emoticon

woo hoo on the scale going down

LOVESTOWALK49 sounds like your on the right track.

I don't know what a personal trainer would say(you would think they would want to be positive) but here the thing with exercising, just do some everyday, 10 minute here, 20 minute there it all adds up. emoticon

The meeting with the personal trainer was close to useless, but at least, I didn't let her opinion upset me. I'm going to try to cut the meat and dairy out of my diet. I ate the last of the fish I bought last night. I'm going to take this diet one day at a time. I'm eating more fruit and vegetables which is a step in the right direction.

I need to cut down on the sweets. It's hard with muffins and cookies in the house. At least, this time, I wasn't the one to buy or make them. I seem to be eating the right amount of calories to maintain my weight.

I'm not ready to start the plan full time. I'm adding healthy foods to my diet. I'm taking it one step at a time. I have to stop buying bread and pastries. I have to avoid the ones that family members bring home. I find that fruit satisfies my sweet tooth. I'm currently at a healthy weight so I'm not interested in losing weight. I don't know if my weight is stable at the moment because I had lost some weight a couple of weeks ago from being sick. I could be just gaining back the three pounds I lost from illness or I'm gaining weight because I'm eating too much.

I have a meeting with a personal trainer today at the gym to talk about my goals. This is a first for me. Not exactly, but before when gym staff measured me and gave me advice it was too large a blow to my weak self-esteem that I ignored the advice or couldn't return to the gym. This time, I'm much older and have a much better self-image. I also know a lot more about health, weight loss and nutrition than I did back then. I don't think talking to a personal trainer will put me off exercising at a gym like it did years ago. If I hate what she has to say, I'll feel it's her fault, not mine. When I was younger, I felt the other way and felt like being at a gym was useless and I was unwanted. I have a feeling that she'll have good advice and I won't feel mocked in the slightest. Wish me luck.

I was able to sleep late this morning and woke naturally (without alarm). The scale was moving in the right direction this morning. My body was not stiff or with pain. It is chilly and rainy and I don't have to go out unless I choose to. I can read, play on the computer, work on a few projects as I see fit. I have a great start on my food for the day!

Life is good!

BAWNEE, glad it was helpful. As a result of the detailed food tracking I did, I have become comfortable that the common thought on required calories is based on the SAD diet where the average nutrition taken in per calorie is quite low and the calories have to be increased in an attempt to provide enough nutrition.

We Nutritarians, however get high nutrition density and don't require as many calories. Also, our true hunger naturally tells us when we need to eat. So if we have high metabolism or are very active we will get hungry more often.

It all takes care of itself if we eat our fruits, vegetables and G-BOMBS

Hello all, I was very successful w/ weight loss following ETL about 4 years ago. I am 5'2" and went from 138 to 103 with this plan and exercise....however, I am now the highest I have been since I reached 103 and I'm ready to go back to what I know works.

(Just not going to give up coffee and may have the occasional glass of red wine on the weekend)

There is no calorie requirement for ETL. When I was tracking my food on the 6-week plan, just for information, I found that my calorie count was quite low compared to the SparkPeople calorie recommendation. I was eating well, getting lots of nutrients, did not go hungry, and felt very well so I didn't worry about it.

Also I know I have plenty of stored fat calories my body can use any time it needs them. LOL

If someone is under weight and therefore worried about getting enough calories, then they should increase their allocation of nuts, seeds, starchy vegetables and grains.

I ate realy good but could not get the calories in. I took out almonds from the house, I don't control them and it was a problem. I love te ETL does this happen to anyone and what do you think?

I have had periodontal laser surgery and had the first half the middle of December and the second half last Friday. So I haven't been able to eat any solid food and I miss my salads and veggies. I have gained a couple of pounds so I will be thankful in another two weeks to be able to begin eating solid food. Boy am I going to enjoy those crunchy items.

Thanks everyone for your encouraging words. I think I will do week 5 over starting today.
Just to know I've lost 17 pounds these last five weeks IS really great. I am motivated once more.

I think you are doing GREAT! you went away and although things were not perfect you came home to the plan of starting immediately again. I think whatever feels right to you is the right thing to do. If you feel like starting all over then do it but if you want to pick up from where you slipped so be it. The most important thing IMO is that you are aware and thinking healthy about your food.
Good Luck
Jay

Hello Everyone. At the end of week five, but I had a really difficult time in week 5 due to a week long camping trip. I've never quite given up the caffeine, just tried to reduce it to only one cup a day. Gave into the temptation of fresh trout and smore like camp food, but I hope to get back on track this week. Should I start the six weeks all over? Or maybe think of myself as doing week 5 over? I still am losing weight.... Thanks.

I put healthy cancer-fighting strawberries, kale, romaine lettuce in my green smoothie along with 1/4 avocado, coconut water, almond milk, red wine vinegar, lemon juice, turmeric, cinnamon chia seeds, flax meal, green drink mix, and Spirulina. It was very tasty. I also added a packet of Sweet Leaf Stevia to the mix, just to make sure it was palatable - it was very palatable.

DEEPBREATH33, Being a coffee drinker, I can sympathize. My brother prepares for caffeine-less camping trips by drinking a little less each day. I'm not sure I would be willing to put up with caffeine headaches for more than half a day. They are so painful! You are really determined!

Day 42, one more day to hit first stage goal of 6 weeks. I quit weighing in daily because it was not worth the freak out when it didn't go where I wanted it to. I only weigh on Tuesday mornings now, last tuesday made 18lbs Tomorrow,I CAN HARDLY WAIT!!!

these things I know:
1. I feel great
2. The cravings are gone
3. I weigh less than when I started
4. My skin looks much better than before I started
5. My hope level has risen by leaps and bounds!
6. I am looking forward to tomorrow instead of dreading it.
7. I know I can do this the rest of my life and be happy about it.

Good Luck,Good Health!
