WOW!! Sounds like you had a fabulous time. Monument Park is a very special, and emotional place. So glad you got there early enough to visit it.

I am quite jealous...I never did get to Strawberry Fields. I am a huge Beatles' fan. How was it? Should I include it on my next trip to NY?

WE got SO LUCKY! They called for 60% chance of rain on Sunday, & we DID get rained on as we walked to the subway; but the sun was out by the time we got to Yankee Stadium; & it never rained another drop!

We hit MONUMENT PARK as soon as we got inside! IT WAS AMAZING!

We had GREAT SEATS, Derek Jeter got a hit, & even tho they lost the game, we had a GREAT DAY! The stadium is absolutely BEAUTIFUL!
The FANS ACTUALLY WATCHED THE GAME (not like the fans HERE, who YAK on their cells, & to each other like they are at HOME, never paying attention to the game). The people around us were VERY RESPECTFUL, no booing or cursing! IT WAS DELIGHTFUL!

We left there & went to Central Park to see STRAWBERRY FIELDS.

I have LOTS of pix in my cell phone, & if I can figure out how to POST THEM, I will! LOL emoticon

We just missed each other! The 25th was our last game. Hope you had a blast, even though they didn't win!

In other news, we just traded Kelly Johnson for Stephen Drew....and our best power-hitter prospect (in AA) Peter O'Brien for Martin Prado (AZ). In the meantime, my Tiger-loving husband is dancing getting David Price, even while losing Drew Smyly and Austin Jackson.

Blah.

I'm not sure about Derek. I think his body may be telling him it is time to retire, although he is still doing just fine in my eyes!

Sad about Tanaka - not just because of what it means for the Yankees - but he loves the game so much and he is so gifted, talented, and HUMBLE. A classy guy - hate to see him on the sidelines for so long. Just pray this rehab works!

Also very disappointed that we won't see him when we are at Yankee Stadium 7/22-7/25. At this rate I pray I will recognize half the players!

So sad about what has been happening with the Yankees. I had heard speculation that Jeter's decision to retire may have been in part because the team seems to have some pretty lean years ahead. Don't know if that's true or not, and certainly his time has come, but it would be plausible.

Diane - regretfully I agree with you about CC. Not sure if we will ever see him in a Yankee uniform again.

Yeah - too many old timers. Let's never forget the Carl Pavano fiasco! UGH! I hate to even type his name!!! And amazingly, he pitched good after we got rid of him.

Bernie left in such a bad way. I am glad they will honor him next year. He was a great player. Amazing how when he got older and a little slower, they didn't sign him??? They do from every other team!!

You are SO RIGHT, Dianne! The NYY have been FAMOUS for signing "over aged" players FOR BIG BUCKS, who gave their BEST YEARS to other teams! ATHLETES, unlike FINE WINE, do NOT GET BETTER WITH AGE! LOL
You bring up a good point about the trainers, too!

I was VERY HAPPY to see the NYY SHUT OUT the NY Mets tonight! emoticon

Unfortunately I think much of it has to do with the age of the players we are signing... For years I have wanted them to put their energies into developing the farm system, even if it means we don't win championships for a couple years. That's where the core 4 came from, after all....

I also really wonder about our trainers too....can't help it after seeing so many injuries for several seasons now.

Just turned the game on to the news that Shawn Kelley, Carlos Beltran and Ichiro are all down with injuries as of today. Kelley I believe is the only one that has been put on the DL. Beltran is day to day with a bone spur in his elbow and Ichiro is also day to day with an injured back. This is turning into last year all over again...

How wonderful for you, Mareannie! I am jealous too. There is a slight possibility that I might hit a Yankee game in July at the Stadium, but plans are still pretty murky. Glad you had a wonderful day!

In other news, CC on the DL... why it is that they never "want to say anything" when they are hurt is beyond me. They end up hurting us more than if they address it when it first starts.

I am hoping his #51 will be retired, and hoping they/we pay tribute to him at the Stadium. I am going to keep checking, as I have already decided if there is a recognition ceremony for him before a game, my family (including my 2 Yankee fan grandsons) are making the trip to the Bronx to see him and catch the game!!

BTW, my son and I were in attendance at Game #3 in Anaheim (we live in SoCal). Was able to get great seats and were there for the short ceremony honoring Jete with a wonderful video collage of his career with NYY. Very moving moment. After the presentation of his gift, he trotted by the first base line (which in Anaheim is the "Yankee Section") and waved and tipped his cap to us all. So many Yankees fans in attendance, as usual, with most wearing their #2 Jerseys. The only numbered Jersey I have is 51, so I wore that. To top it off, we got a wonderful win and I got to spend a great evening with my firstborn. In all, a GREAT night and Great Game!! We love our Yankees!! My 2 year old grandson already has a thorough knowledge of the Yankees; we watch or listen to the games together and "Jete" is his favorite player.

Gooo Yankees!!!

I can't believe Pineda was stupid enough to get caught with pine tar on his neck! Didn't he learn from all the bad press last time? I know a lot of pitchers use something, but be a little discreet at least! Geesh!

And so it begins The Yankees will be without Francisco Cervelli for a good while. With a Grade-2 hamstring injury, the Yankees have moved Cervelli to the 60-day disabled list. In his place, the team has called up John Ryan Murphy and Scott Sizemore

So glad they signed Gardner for 4 more years.
No one has his speed on the bases!
Hope he gets adjusted in outfield - liked him as center.

Susan - the shirts sound wonderful! My younger son is already scouting Jete shirts to see which ones he wants. I have always had the dream of being employed by the NYY. Maybe I could take George Constanza's (Seinfeld Show) job. emoticon

Always liked Brett - glad he is staying with us.

My 2 year old grandson is a big Jeter fan...when the MLB regular season starts I will start explaining to him that this will be the last baseball season for his favorite Yankee. He, too, was born with pinstripes in his veins. Makes this Grandma very happy. emoticon

Goooooooooooo Yankees!! Let's have a great year!!

Mareannie,

Like you I was born and raised a Yankee fan and will be forever more.

I have been in love with Jeter since he joined the team! Oh, if only I were younger....my sons say I would most likely get arrested for stalking!

I just ordered two T shirts. One has a pin striped heart with 2 in the middle. The other says: This nurse LOVES the New York Yankees.

Used to have NYYRN as my car plate. That is my dream job to be the team nurse.

Yes, sometimes it can take a little time to root for a player that was on another team (especially if he was a Red Sox Player !)
But, as Diane said, we love our team WIN or lose!

I think we are all behind our beloved Yankees - otherwise we wouldn't be here. But that doesn't mean we can't disagree with the decisions by the front office... and certainly A-Rod has not earned our support. Once the season starts, we will all be rooting for #28 and for the team - even if we all have our less than favorite players.... emoticon

Just found this thread. I agree, will be another very emotional, bittersweet season. After this year, the Core Four will be no more.
The good news is ARod is gone...we will not have to deal with him in 2014. ~whew~
I have to tell you, when I found this thread and read all the posts, I felt there was a lot of negativity here regarding my/our beloved Yankees. Good year or bad, old players or new, we Yankee fans support our team. That is one of the many things that separate us from other fans of other teams. I was born and raised a Yankee fan, and will be til my death and long after!! Win or lose, great season or not so great, I support them, and try to accentuate the positive. Goooooooooo Yankees!! Can't wait to once again see Yankee baseball.

Hey Barbara, I have a cardboard stand-up of Jeter about 1 foot tall. This way he'll be with me always. LOL
Actually had bought it for my great-aunt who loved Jeter. He reminded her of her late husband when they first met. So I got it for her so he could be with her when she watched the games. Her first date with him was to Yankee Stadium to see the famous Lou Gehrig "luckiest man" speech. Sadly, she passed away 2 years ago.

Ugh, just read this o Facebook:

In a twist of fate, the Captain's last regular season series will be played at Fenway Park. Tickets for those games just became the hottest ticket in town: "In an ironic twist, the Yankees' last series for this upcoming season, which we now know will be the shortstop's last, will come at Fenway Park on Sept. 28. Within minutes of the announcement that was posted to Jeter's Facebook page, ticket prices started soaring on the web. Ticket aggregator TiqIQ said that the cheapest seat for the game at around 2 p.m. ET, before Jeter's announcement was posted was $26. An hour later, the site didn't have anything for less than $200. "People bought what they could buy," said TiqIQ's Chris Matcovich. "And then brokers started pulling their tickets so as not to sell their seats too cheaply."' Even in the heart of enemy territory, respect and admiration for Jeter runs deep. Hopefully, Yankees fans will flood Fenway to witness Jeter's final regular season games.

Heard how the LAST NYY games of the 2014 season are in the "dreaded place" & the team has "RED" in their name. When it was announced that Derek would RETIRE, the ticket prices for those games SKY ROCKETED; THEN the brokers PULLED the tkts; bc they didn't want to get CHEATED out of money!

I posted that question and then a few days later...he announces retirement. I am not surprised. I am sure he wants to go out on a high note. Don't even want to think about his last game. I went online to look up the weather and there was an article on his retirement. I teared up right there at my desk.
He has played baseball since he was a little boy and as he said, when it becomes a job, it is time to go.
Said he wants to start a family...that will be one lucky lady!

This is VERY SAD; but not UNEXPECTED news! He is, after all, going to be 40 in June. While " I " would LOVE to see him play FOREVER; it ain't gonna happen.

I'm gonna start to STOCK UP on KLEENEX now; bc I am gonna be a BASKET CASE when he walks off the field for the last time.

I'll have to keep a FAV. quote of mine in mind:

Jeter does NOT want to admit that he is getting older. How many 40 year old players are out there? He did have a great year in 2012(?) to prove us all wrong but then the injuries and re-injuries struck. I hope he goes out on top. As much as I would miss him, I would hate to see him deteriorate into one of those has-beens that the Yankees are famous for buying lately! He is too good for that and is too much of a class-act. Definitely deserves to be in Legends Field and Baseball Hall of Fame. emoticon emoticon

I can't even imagine what kind of shape he would be in by next year. If our dreams don't come true (he retires) maybe the Yankees will just buy out his contract. My bet is that he'll have some type of "injury" before 2015 and won't come back too soon.

Can't wait till the games begin! Itching for a baseball game!!
