Yes, sadly, he will be able to play in 2014. Many articles were released today, and, in summary, they are saying he "paid the time for his crime" and will be back in baseball. Terrible. Forgive me for saying this (I don't wish harm to anyone) but I hope he has an injury in Spring Training that will keep him out for the season.

I believe so. Once he testified before his suspension, the Yankees knew it all - we are the ones just finding out some of the details. Sad - and SO sick of hearing about him.

Raul!!! So cool!!!

I had no idea they were considering him. I love when I get my Yankee news from Sparkpeople.

I think he is a great guy, and I would love to see him in pinstripes again. But is he a good coach? I have no idea; however, I heard that he mentored some of the younger players in Kansas City, and obviously as a team they did something right (even if they did not win the series, they were the second best performers in baseball and well beyond anyone's expectations for that team).

Agreed!!!

Now DH is chortling since YES announced that Tori Hunter is one of the "under-the-radar" options we are looking at. He would LOVE to get rid of him...I think it is just more of the same...getting older has-beens who are past their prime. (SIGH)

What do folks think about Raul Ibanez as a possible hitting coach?

Not just a waste of payroll but also a waste of a valuable roster spot. Don't hold out too much hope for him (I understand Girardi wanted him to play in So. America this fall but he wouldn't do it). And if some of the others don't improve (i.e. CC, Tex, Beltran), we may be in for a long 2015.

I agree. A ROD is so "into himself"....he doesn't seem like the type who would "work out" & TRY to stay in best form for his return to the team. He has always been SELFISH & A "ME FIRST" person. Not exactly the IDEAL TEAM MATE!

I would rather see him on the DL or DHing for SOME OTHER TEAM!

Personally, I think he'll be in bad shape from not playing all year. He'll spend more time on the DL or DHing. Waste of Yankee payroll!

I was in Montreal the last year the Expos played and actually caught a game. They were playing the Atlanta Braves. When the Braves had the great pitchers: Smoltz, Glavine, Maddux. But also that idiot Rocker! Great seats for a good price. Sorry they left Montreal.

Just catching up on all the posts!
Jeter's last game at home - NO WAY could that have been fixed. Great ending to a great career. Loved seeing the Core Four Plus! Cried ;(
Last game in Boston - though I HATE the Red Sox, I thought they did a great tribute to him. And for every player to come out on the field before the game to congratulate him - very classy on their part (they could have just stood by the dugout). Green monster scoreboard paying Re2pect, pinstriped 2nd base, captains of Boston teams, sports heroes, ALS bucket challenge guy .... all very well done!
Glad Jeter didn't play shortstop there. He is sooo good at knowing what to say and do!
Will miss him terribly.

I think I cried myself out of tears on Thursday. Somehow his playing at Fenway just didn't feel like him playing - rather it seemed like a guest appearance. At any rate, I was really struck by how happy and relieved he seemed today, so as sad as I am to be losing him, I am really happy for him.

Just watched Derek Jeter's LAST HIT EVER; & started CRYING IMMEDIATELY! Then, when they took him OUT OF THE GAME, the GEYSER OPENED!

Hard to believe I won't ever see him play baseball again!

I'm TRYING to remember one of my own favorite sayings:
Don't CRY bc something is OVER.....SMILE bc IT WAS!

That's kind of HARD to do right now!

LOVE YOU, DEREK & THANKS FOR ALL THE SMILES!

I hear you...I have been trying my best not to pay attention to the asinine criticism and negativity. I stopped reading/listening to any of it after the Keith Oberman rant. Just ridiculous. Keep in mind...there will always be haters, always jealous people and always unkind people.
The game fixing theory is absolutely preposterous. Not even worth considering.

Congrats again to Jete - great man, classy guy, loyal teammate and a heck of a Captain. We will miss you much. emoticon

I went to the NY DAILY NEWS F/B page, & I was TOTALLY DISGUSTED by the TERRIBLE NEGATIVE COMMENTS! They said BUCK SHOWALTER "FIXED" the game, so DEREK would get the "winning hit". To believe THAT kind of IDIOTIC THINKING, JOE G. would have had to tell Dave R. to SERVE UP HOME RUNS so Derek would have another "at bat"! Like Joe would EVER do that!
Also, the Orioles are FIGHTING for "HOME FIELD" so WHY would they PURPOSELY BLOW A GAME???? Such NONSENSE!!!!!!!!!

I will NEVER understand people! WHY do they have to SH*T all over Derek Jeter?
They are SO JEALOUS, they HAVE to say NEGATIVE THINGS, to make THEMSELVES "FEEL BETTER"! HOW VERY SAD!.......

Totally overwhelmed (and exhausted!) after watching that game. Wow!

So I am really glad that Derek won't be at SS in Boston. I wouldn't even be that unhappy if he decided not to play, but evidently he will be DH'ing, just maybe not tomorrow.

I "DO" have access to USA TV; but I can't see the game, either! As far as I know, it will only be on YES, & YES isn't shown here.

They have been talking about the NY FORECAST for tom. night on the radio here ALL DAY.
They keep saying there is an 80% chance of RAIN in NY, so TONIGHT may be Derek's LAST game in Yankee Stadium.

Nobody knows for sure until game day. The game I went to in July, there was a 60% chance of rain; but it didn't rain a DROP! FINGERS CROSSED FOR TOMORROW NIGHT! A LOT OF PEOPLE PAID A LOT OF MONEY TO SEE THAT GAME!!!!!!!!

Agree. This has been a terrible season. The last few weeks have only gone from bad to worse.

Regarding the comments about Papelbon - I never cared for him either, and I think he is a truly classless act. I don't necessarily feel that way about all the Red Sox. But Papelbon once made a comment to the effect that he wanted to be the best closer in baseball after Mo retired. Well, Mo is gone, and Papelbon isn't even close.

~sigh~ Hate to say it, but am thinking of no October for us, and no last Post-Season for Jete.

I agree with the comments regarding ESPN.

Papelbon really showed his true colors. He is one of several (former) Bosux players that I NEVER EVER liked...not even a little. What a piece of work he is...

Eh. I hate watching games on ESPN. They've always been anti-Yankees (at least for the past 5 years or so ... I don't remember before that)

I'm watching the NYY game on ESPN right now. It's Derek Jeter's LAST appearance on Sun. night baseball.

These announcers seem to be SUCH YANKEE HATERS,,,,,,,,2 of them are John Kruk & Curt Schilling! They say NOTHING but BAD THINGS about the NYY!
BOO...... HISS....... to them BOTH!!!!!!!! emoticon

WOW!! Sounds like you had a fabulous time. Monument Park is a very special, and emotional place. So glad you got there early enough to visit it.

I am quite jealous...I never did get to Strawberry Fields. I am a huge Beatles' fan. How was it? Should I include it on my next trip to NY?

WE got SO LUCKY! They called for 60% chance of rain on Sunday, & we DID get rained on as we walked to the subway; but the sun was out by the time we got to Yankee Stadium; & it never rained another drop!

We hit MONUMENT PARK as soon as we got inside! IT WAS AMAZING!

We had GREAT SEATS, Derek Jeter got a hit, & even tho they lost the game, we had a GREAT DAY! The stadium is absolutely BEAUTIFUL!
The FANS ACTUALLY WATCHED THE GAME (not like the fans HERE, who YAK on their cells, & to each other like they are at HOME, never paying attention to the game). The people around us were VERY RESPECTFUL, no booing or cursing! IT WAS DELIGHTFUL!

We left there & went to Central Park to see STRAWBERRY FIELDS.

I have LOTS of pix in my cell phone, & if I can figure out how to POST THEM, I will! LOL emoticon

We just missed each other! The 25th was our last game. Hope you had a blast, even though they didn't win!

In other news, we just traded Kelly Johnson for Stephen Drew....and our best power-hitter prospect (in AA) Peter O'Brien for Martin Prado (AZ). In the meantime, my Tiger-loving husband is dancing getting David Price, even while losing Drew Smyly and Austin Jackson.

Blah.

I'm not sure about Derek. I think his body may be telling him it is time to retire, although he is still doing just fine in my eyes!

Sad about Tanaka - not just because of what it means for the Yankees - but he loves the game so much and he is so gifted, talented, and HUMBLE. A classy guy - hate to see him on the sidelines for so long. Just pray this rehab works!

Also very disappointed that we won't see him when we are at Yankee Stadium 7/22-7/25. At this rate I pray I will recognize half the players!

So sad about what has been happening with the Yankees. I had heard speculation that Jeter's decision to retire may have been in part because the team seems to have some pretty lean years ahead. Don't know if that's true or not, and certainly his time has come, but it would be plausible.

Diane - regretfully I agree with you about CC. Not sure if we will ever see him in a Yankee uniform again.

Yeah - too many old timers. Let's never forget the Carl Pavano fiasco! UGH! I hate to even type his name!!! And amazingly, he pitched good after we got rid of him.

Bernie left in such a bad way. I am glad they will honor him next year. He was a great player. Amazing how when he got older and a little slower, they didn't sign him??? They do from every other team!!

You are SO RIGHT, Dianne! The NYY have been FAMOUS for signing "over aged" players FOR BIG BUCKS, who gave their BEST YEARS to other teams! ATHLETES, unlike FINE WINE, do NOT GET BETTER WITH AGE! LOL
You bring up a good point about the trainers, too!

I was VERY HAPPY to see the NYY SHUT OUT the NY Mets tonight! emoticon

Unfortunately I think much of it has to do with the age of the players we are signing... For years I have wanted them to put their energies into developing the farm system, even if it means we don't win championships for a couple years. That's where the core 4 came from, after all....

I also really wonder about our trainers too....can't help it after seeing so many injuries for several seasons now.

Just turned the game on to the news that Shawn Kelley, Carlos Beltran and Ichiro are all down with injuries as of today. Kelley I believe is the only one that has been put on the DL. Beltran is day to day with a bone spur in his elbow and Ichiro is also day to day with an injured back. This is turning into last year all over again...

How wonderful for you, Mareannie! I am jealous too. There is a slight possibility that I might hit a Yankee game in July at the Stadium, but plans are still pretty murky. Glad you had a wonderful day!

In other news, CC on the DL... why it is that they never "want to say anything" when they are hurt is beyond me. They end up hurting us more than if they address it when it first starts.

I am hoping his #51 will be retired, and hoping they/we pay tribute to him at the Stadium. I am going to keep checking, as I have already decided if there is a recognition ceremony for him before a game, my family (including my 2 Yankee fan grandsons) are making the trip to the Bronx to see him and catch the game!!

BTW, my son and I were in attendance at Game #3 in Anaheim (we live in SoCal). Was able to get great seats and were there for the short ceremony honoring Jete with a wonderful video collage of his career with NYY. Very moving moment. After the presentation of his gift, he trotted by the first base line (which in Anaheim is the "Yankee Section") and waved and tipped his cap to us all. So many Yankees fans in attendance, as usual, with most wearing their #2 Jerseys. The only numbered Jersey I have is 51, so I wore that. To top it off, we got a wonderful win and I got to spend a great evening with my firstborn. In all, a GREAT night and Great Game!! We love our Yankees!! My 2 year old grandson already has a thorough knowledge of the Yankees; we watch or listen to the games together and "Jete" is his favorite player.

Gooo Yankees!!!
