Hi Everyone!

This group and you all are my VERY FIRST POST, so go gentle on me ;)

Like many other people here, I LOVE LENT! I grew up without religion and did not find the Catholic faith until I met an angel in my husband, and it was five years ago I decided to "give this Lent thing a try" and my heart just opened up to everything the church had to offer. We will continue our annual tradition of "sushi date night" Fridays, add in a family rosary session on Sundays, Stations of the Cross at our beautiful parish church, and I'm doing away with sugar. Hubby is going on his annual swearing off of soda, as well. Hopefully with those changes and our healthier eating, we'll both be on the track to our weight loss goals while we continue growing in our spiritual journey together.

All reality has its origin in our perception.

I finally decided what i will do:
My one sin to focus on: gluttony--not just food (which has been out of control recently) but of things in general. I have a lot of "stuff" and keep buying more without thinking what i will actually DO with it. I have a lot of books that I have yet to read and DVDs that still have their plastic wrap on them. So I plan on curtailing the gluttony of food and stuff.

My one give up--I will fast once a week.

My one add-in--I will go to mass at least once in the middle of the week (not including Sunday/Holy days of Obligation)--this will be a big one for me because it is something I have never really done or strived for.

i am planning on getting back to saying the rosary every day and i have also just begun tithing so i will use the Lenten season to keep me faithful with that. I am a diabetic so i still have to eat regularly but i will be more strict about my carbohydrate intake and I will also give up swearing but i also plan on paying .25 for each relapse and then I will put the money in the poor box each week.

Thank you for the link! It is really helpful. I plan to read a passage of scripture daily and to complete one rosary per day during the lenten season. (I make cord rosaries but I have let it go).

Amazing, Ash Wednesday is this Wednesday coming up.

I have decided to do a few things...
Give up chocolate, and the other little sugary treats, our secretaries love to share.
Making Fridays a vegetarian day, as I do agree with a previous comment about fish and other seafoods.

Read a chapter of the New Testament daily.
Read a chapter of the Purpose Driven Life each day. (40 chapters) and/or say the rosary each day.

Better to light one candle than to curse the darkness.

I meant to say I feel sad when Easter comes (since Lent is over for the year), not Christmas!! I love when Christmas comes! I just reread what I wrote and it didn't make sense so I wanted to clarify!

I feel closer to Jesus, and my faith, during Lent than any other time of the year. Sounds crazy, but I am almost saddened when Christmas comes. People are always talking about the Post-Holiday Blues (referring to after Christmas is celebrated); I am "blue" when Lent ends.

I am going to read scripture for 30 minutes for an indulgence for souls in purgatory.
The deacon who is to be ordained this year encouraged me to do that for lent.
I am reading the readings for the day and then the other epistles not written by St Paul that are not as well known.

Sing to the Lord a new song, for he has done marvelous things:... Psalm 98

Therefore we do not lose heart. Though... we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day my day....So fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. for what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal

Mareannie, I too love the Lenten season. Although it is somber thinking about what our Lord suffered during this time, it is also a very good time to refocus on Jesus our Lord and what He did for us, and what He wants to do in our lives now. Such a blessed, if difficult, time of the liturgical year.

I'd like to have a Lenten challenge here with my CC buddies! I've not yet decided what I am going to do for Lent. One thing a friend challenged me to do when I first came into the Church was to not only give up something, but to replace it with something good. For instance, if I am giving up TV watching, then I replace it with prayer, reading, Mass, etc.

That dear friend also gave me the booklet "What Am I Doing for Lent This Year?" and I've been ordering and using it ever since. It helps prepare me for Lent by guiding me through prayer and reflection on the past year, where I am now in my walk with God, and what specific things I feel God leading me to focus on during Lent.

If anyone is interested, the booklet is only $1 and can be ordered online from Liturgy Training Publications (ltp.org).

To our health,
Christina

I am up for a Lenten Challenge! emoticon

As some of you may remember, I LOVE Lent!! Even more than Advent. Of course, I will get my Ashes during Mass Wednesday morning, before work. I do no meat Wednesdays and Fridays, similar to the way early Christians did hundreds of years ago. Daily morning Mass when I can ( at least 2X per week), alms giving and random acts of kindness.

Did I mention...I LOVE LENT?!!!

I am so honored I got picked to read on Ash Wednesday...

Joel 2: 12 -18 Even now, says the Lord,
return to me with your whole heart,
with fasting,and weeping, and mourning
Rend your hearts, not your garments,
and return to the Lord, your God.
For gracious and merciful is he,
slow to anger, rich in kindness,
and relenting in punishment.
Perhaps he will again relent
and leave behind him a blessing,
Offerings and libations
for the Lord, your God.

Blow the trumpet in Zion!
proclaim a fast,
call an assembly;
Gather the people,
notify the congregation'
Assemble the elders,
gather the children and the infants at the breast;
Let the bridegroom quit his room,
and the bride her chamber.
Between the porch and the altar let the priests,
the misisters of the Lord, weep,
And say, Spare, O Lord, your people,
and make not your heritage a reproach,
with the nations ruling over them!
Why should they say among the peoples,
'Where is their God?'
Then the Lord was stirred to concern for his land
and took pity on his people.

Meatless Fridays.
Work towards spiritual growth by attending Mass daily and pray the rosary each day.
No alcohol because alcohol and spiritual growth don't mix well for me.

I find Lent a sad time, as I recall the journey Jesus made before giving up His life for our redemption.

Meatless Fridays, rosary at least 1x a week and more Bible reading. I also am going to pray on giving up the afternoon snacks, which would be hard for me to do, but it would be a sacrifice I am willing to make during Lent. Jesus gave up himself for us....this is the least I could do, right!?!!

Barbara .....that's what my friends call me! Never cared for the name Barb.

We have a double whammy: Lent, then Colin's Baptism on March 3. So we are doing a new floor and before the installers arrive, we are painting and deep cleaning.

SPritiually, we are preparing pretty much as we normally do. To me, meatless makes no sense if we are eating salmon, shrimp, crab cakes, etc on Friday. In fact, the whole notion of "fish on Friday" has been pretty much stood on its head. Fish and seafood have pretty much become luxury foods. At one time, the nobles at meat all the time while the people were able to freely catch fish. So essentially, the practice pf fish on Friday was a humbling experience for the nobility. They had to eat peasant food.

Of course that's not the case today. I once told out pastor that the calendars would make more sense if the Fridays in Lent included a little can of Spam instead of a little fishy.

So what do we do? We aim to eat a vegan menu on Fridays. Failing that we at least attempt to eat vegetarian. That is a more challenging sacrifice for our family the fish.

Good thread!

Good question, Jane. We often do a Lenten challenge.
Who is up for one this year?

I too have dietary constraints but if I was honestly following them I would loose weight.
So my goal for lent is honestly following my food plan and posting on my food tracker.

In previous years, this team has had a Lenten challenge, incorporating physical, emotional, and spiritual health. Is there interest in a similar or another Lenten challenge this year?

Wow, I hadn't thought about it yet. We probably will not think about abstaining too much because of our age (77 and 79) and health considerations. Our diets are pretty much controlled and we rarely do anything other that just stay home.

No complaints. 55 years married is satisfaction enough.

Ash Wednesday is right around the corner (Feb 13th). How are you and your family preparing for this season? I have not decided what to abstain from yet but one thing I do wish to do is to clear out clutter in my home in preparation.
