My husband and I also had infertility problems and have no children. There are thousands and thousands of couples who would love to adopt some of those babies who are aborted.

My husband & I were not able to have children, as a result of infertility. It is so sad that they make it it so unaffordable for many people to adopt.

Janis, your conversation with your friend is sad. More than anything else we need to pray, pray, and pray some more. I also don't understand being sad over cattle being slaughtered but not voting against abortion, the modern-day slaughter of the Holy Innocents.

I had a discussion with a good friend, a woman I really like, four years ago when the 2008 presidential campaign was going on. She is a Catholic and a Democrat, and she told me that the capital punishment issue is more important to her than abortion. I was dumbfounded and told her I couldn't understand that. While I am not in favor of capital punishment, there were 43 criminals executed in the US last year as opposed to 1.2 million abortions in the US (statistics on Wikipedia). The 43 criminals had years and years of due process, whereas the 1.2 million babies had no voice. I would love to vote for a presidential candidate who is truly pro-life on every issue, but if I have to choose between 43 criminals with due process vs. 1.2 million babies with no due process, I will vote with the babies.

These are the 5 "Non-Negotiables" as defined by the Catholic Church in the US:
1. Abortion
2. Embryonic stem cell research
3. Cloning
4. Homosexual marriage
5. Euthanasia

If you compare both of the candidates, Romney wins by far.

Before I posted my comment to this thread last night, I had attemted to paost one before that. I tried over abd over again, but it is one of those things that happens frequently and the computer is at a stand still. It will say, "diagnosing problems" or something as such. I was very wound up. When I tried to write the second time it worked but it wasn't what I wrote the first time.
One of the things I wrote the first time was about bumping into someone a week ago yesterday while shopping in Walmart. This person is a Catholic woman whom I've been acquainted with for over 40 years. She & her husnand are retired farmers now. They raised I believe at least 8 children on their dairy farm. I brought up the debate. I quickly found out she's a democrat. I know I saw Mitt Romney as being considerate as he spoke. I mentioned the fact that the President kept his head down during the debate when Mr. Romney spoke. She told me that he snickered and he lied. I told her we really need to pray; I mentioned the abortion issue. We got on the subject of animals and she talked about how she would get sad when cattle were loaded into a cattle truck and taken to where they are slaughtered. I thought to myself afterwards where is your sadness for all those aborted babies. I realize you are not going to convince any of these people about the sin, and how we are headed down a dark path. Don't they see the face of communism? It is scarey.
Anyways I was telling this lady we need to pray and she never uttered a word. Can't everyone realize we do need to pray no matter what. I could not believe that she didn't think prayer was necessary. Our country is truely being stripped of it's beauty.
I could not get over the horrible behavior of Mr. Biden Thursday night. How can anyone be proud of his rudeness.
I appreciate that I can vent here. emoticon Janis emoticon

I was trying to stay out of this one but I want to pitch in a personal thought: we have a lot of hungry and sick people in this country who need assistance. We have a lot of crime in this country that needs addressing. Maybe we can't be big brother to everyone else all the time.

That is exactly what Jesus taught us to do MIAJOEB. The difference as I see it is that charity truly begins in the home, not Washington DeCeit. In times of trouble, it is vital that we all take care of our neighbors in need. We must do this to one another as the governement (any government) cannot respond with the necessary speed and true compassion.

We had a priest a long time ago that was transferred to a small town a few miles from us and we visited him one Sunday and he proudly told us that he had a "Mormon fund" in his budget. I questioned as to what that was and he told me that he reserves 10% of every Sunday collection in order to take care of his parishoners. That is what Jesus would have wanted. I have never forgot what he told us that day.

Isn't that what Jesus taught us to do?

I want to make a comment about one phrase used by GLAD2BEME. the term "social justice" is a code phrase for the Progressive far left. This great country is based on EQUAL JUSTICE WITH MALICE TOWARD NONE. Social justice has the goal of every body shares alike. Hmmm. Kinda sounds like part of the Commnist Manifesto. Bishop Sheen, a great orator of the 50's and 60's often stated that there were three evil forces that were paramount during WWII, Fascism, Nazism and Communism. He lamented that we defeated only two of those. His TV sermons are still available in the internet. My how things have changed.

Incidentily, I have thoroughly enjoyed this thread. I thank all for their candid and sincere comments.

As a Canadian, I have a hard enough time keeping up with the politics in my own country, but I am interested in what my fellow Catholics to the south are struggling with as you weigh the merits of your candidates.

I pray that the Lord will be with all of you as you make your decisions, and that He will also bless all the leaders who do end up being elected, that they respect life at all levels, but most especially those whom Jesus Himself has told us to care for: the marginalized, the orphaned, the widowed, etc. I am positive that He also meant the unborn!

Anyway, I also wanted to say to SGWAISTMGMT, the euphemism "right to worship" can also be interpreted to mean "right to pray in your own head, or in your own house". Scary thought that right to practise one's religion may be in jeopardy in future.

Elizabeth and Janis I read both relpies and yes I agree but the Catholic church when Obama was Elected had bill boards with pro life using his mother chose his life and they had to take them down ,, the right to life is something we should be proud of but the government and insurance companies feel if you have a newborn and was born a premime what would it take to keep you alive ,,, if it too much they want the child to die and they do nothing that mean my niece and my nephew would not be here today they made it and how many other little ones did tooo

Wow, there are a lot of great posts here! SGWEIGHTMGMT, you are right that Ryan wasn't totally in line with Catholic teaching, but he was far more accurate than the Obama administration has ever been. Remember, Obama was one of the few Illinois legislators who voted against the "Born Alive" law that required medical personnel to save the life of a child who lived despite a botched abortion. What kind of a monster would vote against saving the life of a living child just because the mother intended to kill him/her?

I have been told by Democrat Catholic friends that "Pro life" is about more than abortion, but quite frankly I do not agree. It's fine to talk about social justice, good schools, food stamps, etc., but if you don't have the right to draw your first breath then social justice, fair wages, and the like are meaningless. You can have the best social justice imaginable, but if you are killed before you have access to social justice then it does you no good.

Gobbler11, I couldn't have said it better! I worked in the public schools for 30 years before retiring in May, and I saw countless kids with cell phones, Nike shoes, and designer clothes getting free lunches. I've worked with parent after parent who came in with fake nails, tattoos, and nice clothes who wanted more freebies. I agree that there are some people who truly need help, but a lot of people need to learn the difference between a WANT and a NEED. Beer and cigarettes fall into the WANT category.

Firecom, the 8th commandment applies to politics as well as real life, ha-ha! And IMHO, the vice president wasn't exactly faithful to the 8th commandment!

Wow! This thread really got me set off!

I've really been disgusted in how Mitt Romney & Paul Ryan get the brunt for all that is wrong. If the President or Mr. Biden blunder, who gets the blame? Well it certainly isn't the Democratic Partys fault! Doesn't that make you feel a wee bit angry how Mitt & Paul are doing everything right but take all their blame?
God help us! We need to pray big time prayers. If you are one who knows how to pray the Rosary, now would be a great time to do so. We need to pray, and if you aren't one who prays the Rosary pray your own special prayers to our Heavenly Father. emoticon

Biden did not answer the question of government paying for abortions or birth control correctly, says Bishop Dolan according to the news today..
As a cradle Catholic with a seriously ill parent during my youth til I was grown and married,
I was raised to take the initiative and meet my own responsibilities.
If the government would stop spending, ( like most folks do when they get low on funds) we would all be better off . Yes, there are some folks who genuinely need help during this time .
Yet I saw a line of women at church about 6 mos ago getting interviewed for utility bill assistance. Most of them had tattoos, cigarettes, and cell phones. Why do they have these luxury items, when their electric bill is long past due?
I believe I am a generous person, but do not care to adjust my budget to assist people who spend unwisely, time and time again.

I do not care for politics on the whole, but do see that the Democrats have a more Catholic attitude about social and individual problems. On the other hand the Republican party seems to see the world as an "each man for himself" place. I know that many people only look at the abortion question but for me this is a personal choice that any good Catholic would never choose to do. I have never been faced with such a situation, but I hope I would not choose abortion, we can never know how we would handle any trouble until we face it.

Frankly, I am worried about what will come next with regard to the 1st amendment right of freedom to practice our religion. I noted that the term being used now, even by Hillary Clinton is "freedom to worship" IOW keep it inside your church building, don't practice your faith anywhere else.

SGWAISTMGMT, I agree, neither candidate did very well representing the Catholic faith. I felt like the question was just a lame attempt to make the public feel that the issue had been addressed.

Neither man espoused the true teaching of the Catholic church, although Paul Ryan came closer than Joe Biden . Biden could not even look up as he "professed" his adherence to the laws of the Church regarding abortion, while refusing to "force" his position on others. Paul Ryan stated that life begins at conception, but made a "concession" for rape, incest and health of the mother. WRONG! Abortion is an intrinsic evil. A new life created by God cannot be snuffed out at will. Sometimes lifesaving procedures on a mother result in the loss of the childs life but that is NOT abortion.
Being true to our Catholic principles takes lots of courage, love and kindness. I thought the moderator was showing her liberal bias, cautioning Paul Ryan to "be careful" so as not to offend those who may be hurt by his words. The truth does sometimes hurt, especially when those who have violated God's law for their own preferences or "choice" to kill a child.
