CATHOLICCORGI - thank you for the quote - and I thought the addition of the word 'prayer' was a good one!

WANNAREAD - I pray for your son in rehab. I am pleased that you and your daughter had a chance to participate in Mass on the Feast of the Holy Family! May the Holy Family pray for your family, and every family.

And you are right about the Body and Blood of Christ BOTH containing all of Jesus. Thanks for the reminder!

KIMI_SILVA - I pray for you as you mourn. I am so pleased that you got to spend some time in the Adoration Chapel. All thanks be to God.

PSCHEP - emoticon

I just realized that we are chatting in the NOVEMBER chat thread, lol!
How about I start a new one for the new year?

Thank you for sharing that. I agree: I pray the Liturgy of the Hours in the morning with the divineoffice.org site and it really makes a difference to start the day in prayer.

I post the Daily Motivator on a forum I belong to every morning, and I usually choose the Sunday one from past "quotes" by Mr. Marston. I chose this one, and wanted to share it with everyone. A positive start is a good thing. I want to embrace the habit of being grateful for each day! Also, if we begin each day with prayer, we will always have something to be grateful for... the gift of Christ!
I added the word PRAYER into the quote... hope Mr. M won't mind!

A POSITIVE START

Energize your life by starting each day with gratitude(PRAYER). When you wake up, before you do anything else, stop and count your blessings(and say a PRAYER). Then find something special about each day for which you can be thankful.

It’s s great way to get each day started on a positive note, and it can make a major difference throughout the day. Actively practicing gratitude(PRAYER) on a regular basis will keep you in touch with the very best of your possibilities. It will enable you to see opportunities and utilize resources which may otherwise have remained hidden or forgotten.

Maintaining an attitude of gratitude(PRAYER) will keep you connected to the things of value in your life. So in a very real sense it will add value to each moment of the day.

There are many good things in your life. It makes sense to fully appreciate and enjoy them. When you do, those positive things will grow even stronger. Begin each day by counting your many blessings. By so doing you’ll attract many more.

— Ralph Marston

How beautiful that you and your daughter were given such a blessing. I am praying for your son - I have also struggled with addiction, and it is only through God's grace that I am drug free, and attending Mass everyday. Christ is my only hope.

I had a really strange but beautiful experience after Mass on Thursday: My husband (may he rest in peace) was born on the feast of the Holy Innocents, and I had offered up my morning Mass and my Communion for the repose of his soul, as well as many other things that day. Well, the next day after Mass I was talking to a friend - who happens to receive visions - about my potential Calling and out of the blue she said, "you need to pray for your husband". I never told her that I had been married. So, I said, "yes, I was married, but he was murdered". I didn't say anything about the details. Then a few minutes later she says, "Gangs are so terrible. Keep praying for him." He was in a gang when we were young and that, coupled with drug addiction, was what got him murdered. What I took from that conversation is that he is in need of constant prayer. I'm very grateful that God still speaks through his angels here on earth.

I truly wish you all a happy, healthy, and blessedly holy 2012. I pray that the Lord will keep you all in His grace and Divine Mercy. I offer you all the Holy kiss of Peace.

This morning my daughter came with me to mass (even though she worked the night before) and to our delight we found out it was the Feast of the Holy Family! Deo gratias that we got up and went!
We were especially praying for her big brother who is in rehab and struggling in many areas of his life.

"God is Gracious"...that IS beautiful!! I didn't know it, either.

I am so glad, Kimi, that you were able to go into the Adoration Chapel and find some solace. The Christmas Season, although a time to rejoice, can be sad, too, remembering loved ones that are no longer with us. My Dad went to Heaven on December 21st, 19 years ago, and it is still tough for me.

May your Dad rest in peace - I am sure he is smiling down on you.

Blessings to our Team.

Thank you so much. As I was reading your words of comfort I was a little surprised at the coincidence - Leslie's father dying on the same date as my father, and PSCHEP's mother dying on 8/14 (that's my birthday) -
I used to think that my words to a friend over the loss of a loved one were meaningless, but now that I'm the friend who is hearing those words of comfort, I know how meaningful they really are.
By the way: LeslieJean - my middle name is Jean as well, and I just recently found out that it means God is Gracious. Isn't that beautiful?!

Kimi, the "first" holidays are tough. I lost my mother 8/14/2009 about 45 days after her diagnosis. It does get better with time. And as Leslie says, we now remember the good times, and feel less of the pain. Sending hugs and prayers.

I am sorry you lost your father on July 9, so soon after the cancer diagnosis. I also lost my father, many years ago now, but on July 9 also, and it was also very soon after his cancer diagnosis.
July 9 has been a difficult day for me, but these days I often recall good memories instead of only the pain.
I'm glad you were able to have a good cry and get to a church!
I hope your Christmas is filled with peace.

I woke up this morning in a terrible mood, and I had no idea why I felt that way. I seemed to be filled with rage. However, when my beautiful mother called me I was able to realize that my problem was coming from this being the first Christmas without our beloved Daddy - he passed away on July 9, 2011, only 25 days after a cancer diagnosis. When we hung up I lay on my bed and sobbed in my brokenness. Once I was able to get up I could tell that I was beginning to feel better, and knew that a good cry was the start of what I needed. I decided to go out for a walk and the whole time I kept heading toward the church (St. Anne's Parish) even though I was under the impression that everything would be locked up tight. However, once I got there I noticed that there were about a half dozen cars parked outside and I prayerfully headed to the door of the Adoration Chapel. Thanks be to God! The chapel was open. Through God's Diving Mercy and Grace, I was allowed to pray the Joyful Mysteries and spend some time before the Blessed Sacrament. I truly desire a time that my entire life will consist of service to God, His Church, and prayer for the salvation of suffering mankind.

I wish you all a very holy and merry Christmas. God bless you all!!!

As for receiving Holy Communion, the Host (the bread) contains the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus Christ, whole and entire. There is no need to receive the Precious Blood (wine) because the Host contains all of Jesus, including His Precious Blood. At the same time, if some people cannot eat wheat at all, when they receive the Precious Blood, they are also receiving the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity, Jesus Christ Himself, whole and entire.

I never receive the consecrated wine because it is entirely unnecessary. Personally I think distributing the Precious Blood is too fraught with danger of spilling, or desecration. But I will not tell someone else not to receive it, because the practice has been approved by Rome.

I'm like that about cigarette smoke, but that's airborne, of course, and affects a lot of people, I think. I don't drink, so I usually don't frequent bars.

Thank you for sharing your experiences, Dee and Leslijean. That is what I would figure, as the smell and taste alone would be enough to cause trouble for many former alcoholics.

And thank you, Lesliejean, for mentioning that about the dispensation. Perhaps I can work that into my story.

As a recovering alcoholic, the alcoholic Catholics I know do not receive the Blood of Christ.
In RCIA last year I asked the priest what sober alcoholic priests do for the Eucharist and he said that they receive dispensation to use specially prepared white grape juice.
Even though I know it is the Blood of Christ, it still smells and tastes like wine, and the last time I received it, I found myself at the liquor store buying a bottle of wine, so, for me, I just choose to receive the Body only.

The Lord works in mysterious ways, MAYKATCOOPER! That wasn't good timing - that was the Holy Spirit.
emoticon

Thank you for the story about your former priest (I forget who shared that). I am writing an original novel, and the priest within it is clean and sober after having struggled with drug and alcohol addiction. I was debating whether to have him take the Blood at Mass. As there is precedence in real life, I think I will go with my gut and have him take it.

A friend of mine is celiac, but he takes the Body of Christ and has no problems with the gluten in the host, as it is no longer bread.

However, I wonder (and those of you who are recovering alcoholics please do not feel like you have to answer this, I am simply musing aloud) if even though the wine is no longer wine, but truly Christ's blood, if just the remaining appearance and taste and smell of wine is troubling for former alcoholics who wish to not fall back into their difficulties.

Thank you all for your input on my question about the bread and wine... body and blood. That all makes great sense and yes, I should ask that in class. This week is on the Eucharist. Smile. Good timing.

A smile can make it all feel a little better. So, I go and smile at myself in the mirror. Shallow or what? But it works... My name is Kathy and I'm Pennsylvania.

I will look for it too. I wonder if we can find it on ON DEMAND on our cable. It carries pretty recent movies. Is this an older movie returning or brand new?

RCIA class continues and is so helpful. Though so much has been in my embraced beliefs for most of my life, the explanations and connections to Scripture are excellent.

I received new rosaries for my birthday (a little early). Am receiving such blessing from the prayers.

A smile can make it all feel a little better. So, I go and smile at myself in the mirror. Shallow or what? But it works... My name is Kathy and I'm Pennsylvania.

I want to recommend a movie to you all. My godmother took me, after morning Mass, to see THE GREATEST MIRACLE - it's all about the Mass, and it was an amazing movie! It was especially moving because today is the feast day of our Lady of Guadalupe.
When we went, we were the only ones in there. It made me sad that nobody else was bothering to see this amazing and powerful movie.
Please . . . see this movie if it is showing near you. And take other Catholics with you.

God bless you!

Years ago we had a Pastor who was a sober alcoholic. He explained to us that when celebrating Mass he does sip the wine that has been transformed into the Blood of Christ. It is no longer "alcohol" or "wine". It IS the Blood of Christ. Even my sons' religion teacher explained this to them, using Father Sean's experiences. Drinking the Blood of Christ has nothing to do with "drinking" or alcoholism.

I believe many do not take Communion in both species because for years, it was typically available in the form of bread, only. Many Catholics were raised with the Host only, and drinking from the Chalice was not usual or comfortable for them.

That is true, Dee...very VERY few people get ill from cross-contamination of germs from the Chalice of Precious Blood. It is a phenomenon that medical experts cannot explain.

I am allergic to alcohol

I know that they did a study of the cup and so many people drinking from it and the amount of people that got sick from it was 1 percent

a lot of people are on medication and they can not take wine either

I think the question about why people only take the bread and not the wine should be brought up in your class! No doubt there are others wondering the same thing.

I know that a lot of people are fearful of diseases being spread by using the common cup.
For me personally, I am alcoholic and can't take any alcohol.

Those are the only reasons I can think of offhand, but maybe others will have more ideas.

Blessings,
Leslie

We had a wonderful Welcome. Smile. Thank you for asking. Our Jewish woman is 77 years old/young. She was the only candidate for baptism out of the 15 of us. She amazes me.

One of our RCIA leaders handed out a CD an Explanation of the Mass. WOW it is wonderful and would probably be great for everyone to listen to no matter how long you've been Catholic.
It is offered as a free download from www.catholiccity.com. Perhaps check it out.

I have another question. A few of you have shared that you do not take the wine, Christ's blood, during the communion but only the bread, Christ's body. I watched at our church and noticed that most only take the bread. Would you please explain to me why that is. Somehow, I feel safer (not so lame) asking you guys than asking in my class. Thanks so much for all your prayers and for your help as I learn and am being so blessed. Smile.

A smile can make it all feel a little better. So, I go and smile at myself in the mirror. Shallow or what? But it works... My name is Kathy and I'm Pennsylvania.

Hi MAYKATCOOPER!
Praying for your and DAve's RCIA journey.
And praying too for your recovery from surgery. How is that going?

Also praying for the elderly Jewish woman. How wonderful that she felt God was calling her to conversion. How great that her husband supports her, despite not sharing her beliefs.

Dave's and my RCIA experience continues this Sunday with our presentation to the Church in the Rite of Welcome. Please continue to pray for us for full understanding and commitment. I have been a Bible teacher (to adults) for many years and am being used in that too. One of our RCIA class members is an elderly Jewish woman. She felt God's guidance to her to seek a deeper understanding of His truth. She had a stroke two months ago. She is a treasure and I feel honored to be helping her through this faith journey. She is struggling to embrace Christ as the promised Messiah. Please pray for Barbara and her husband, Dick, of some 50+ years is also Jewish but is supporting her decision... though he does not want to convert.

I'm glad she was okay, too, LESLIEJEAN.

What a beautiful idea at that wedding, WANNAREAD. I think I've heard of it before, but I can't remember if I just read about it, or if one couple we know did a similar thing. It's been too many years since they married for me to remember!

I attended a BEAUTIFUL Catholic mass wedding yesterday and as part of the ceremony they had "presenting flowers to Mary" and the bride and groom took a bouquet to the little Perpetual Help shrine in the church (Blessed Sacrament in Seattle) and knelt and said a little prayer. It was so lovely and I have never seen this before! I wish my DH and I had done this at our wedding. Has anyone else ever seen this?

And are you in the States? That makes a difference as well.
I'm so glad of these changes. It means we will all be doing the same things now!

Today at Mass an older woman fell unconscious right during Father's homily. 911 was called, and Father, when he realized, asked us all to be patient until the ambulance arrived and we would continue with the Mass. After the paramedics had checked her over, and got her transferred to a stretcher, Father thanked the paramedics, and the people who had been helping, and thanked the rest of the assembled for their patience, and assured everyone that any info would be shared before Mass was over as soon as any was available. He encouraged us to continue to pray for the ill woman.

After the patient and caregivers had left, he told us he would lighten the mood, and shared a story about what happened at the cathedral one day right before the bishop said Mass: one of the altar servers had held the incense thurible too close to the smoke detector, and the fire bell rang. The attending priests mentioned to the bishop that all should evacuate. The bishop insisted that all should stay, as they knew it was a false alarm. About 20 firefighters ran up the aisle less than 10 minutes later, axes poised, and hoses at the ready. The priests all pointed at the bishop, "He's in charge," they quickly told the firefighters, not wanting to be held responsible for not getting the hundreds of people out of the building!

We found out later, that the woman's blood pressure had dropped drastically, she had not had a heart attack or anything like that.

I agree about the bowing. I think it is important to acknowledge that Jesus is truly present, when we receive, or don't receive, as you ladies are doing.

I have begun the little bow before receiving the Body, and I bow for the Blood even though I don't receive it.

Hello CCs!!!

I think it is interesting the new wordings at mass. I find it a nice change.
*****
As for my last message left in Octobers chat... My date with hubby was great. The comedian knew better than to get raunchy- the entire audience was Catholic!!! It turned out there were four comedians all together who came for a less than 2 hour show. The main comedian who puts it all together is a graduate from that HIgh school and loves returning to do the fundraiser. Hubby & I got to talk with other parents (whom seemed to know each other). It was a great nite.

Kate! So good to see you!
How did you manage to navigate through the site to find this thread?
Anyway, I'm so thrilled that you were able to!

(for those of our members who are new, Kate - TELLITFORWARD - has been a member for ages, but finds it difficult to navigate the site as she uses a screen reader)

I, too, am really looking forward to these changes. I feel the language is more sacral, and I hope it allows for a more reverent approach to Mass. Also, I am praying that it will lead all to a greater examination of Mass, as it will not just be rote recitation anymore, but we will need to pay careful attention for a while whilst we are still learning.

We have incorporated some of the changes already - standing as a group following Communion to symbolize our Communion with the entire Body of Christ, making a small, reverent bow to the Body and Blood of Christ before we receive, etc.

Although my priest is the first to say that he is more 'liberal' than I, he, too, is looking forward to the changes, and I was very excited to hear him say that publicly!

The only change that I am eagerly awaiting, but will be longer in coming is the re-installation of kneelers in our parish. I have heard from one priest (across the river in the other archdiocese) that we have 2 years to re-install them. However, my priest is saying we have 5 years. I can wait. As badly as I want them back, I know these things take time. God will provide. I trust in that.

We have had numerous info sessions regarding the changes, and all have been well-attended, even over-booked necessitating more to be held.

cj

What if we woke up tomorrow with only those things that we thanked God for today?

Yes, the English translations were the ones which were wrong. We were in Great Britain for three weeks, and the Mass was already in full swing as it started there in September. They have also gone back to mandatory abstinence on Friday. It was a bit difficult on one Friday, but we've pretty much adhered to that here all along.

The changes are not too many, but they do make a difference. Some of the new Mass settings are beautiful as well.

At one church we attended, there was a Communion rail, and all received kneeling. You had the choice of receiving in your hand or on the tongue. It was great!

At our parish here in Albuquerque, our pastor has long incorporated the chanting of things like the Our Father, and the Agnus Dei. I like the English, if it is reverent, but wouldn't mind a Latin Mass either.

You are SO blessed and fortunate!! We also attend Mass even on vacation, actually it's great learning how different parishes and priests celebrate Mass. Our children enjoy it too, surprisingly!!

We always find a church to attend when we are traveling. We attended Latin Mass in Flagstaff, AZ and Las Vegas, NV. It is beautiful! Our priest speaks 17 languages so he incorporates prayers in Latin and other languages to the mass.

Latin Mass, ah! I would love to go to one. Here in NC it is very casual, Life Teen Mass with t-shirts, flip-flops, and jeans. Unfortunately, the pastor isn't too keen on the changes and hasn't made a big effort to help the parishoners learn them. We changed parishes several months ago and the pastor here is working on the introductions every other week since September and planted an insert in all the missals with the new prayers and music.

My oldest daughter and I play violin for Mass here and the music is beautiful, but I find the new Gloria wiht 4 flats something I need to work on more...but it's worth it.

I am actually looking forward to the changes. In the past I have been reluctant with the changes in celebrating Mass. I still kneel during the Consecration, and after receiving Holy Communion, while the rest of the parishioners are standing. Our Church has a Latin Mass the second week of each month; I have gone several times and LOVE it. So reverent, solemn and holy. If the changes bring us closer to the intended language and spirit of Mass, I am all for it!

Dee, I believe it's all English-speaking countries that are doing this, because English was the only language that wasn't translated correctly before.
All other languages had the correct translation and don't need any changes now.

Wannaread, yes! You are right, these are prayers that we prayed nearly 40 years ago!! the only thing different is the music and maybe some of the translation in the priest's prayers.

I have my maternal grandfather's 1952 missal and all these prayers are there! I think this is exciting to think that we have a chance to revisit the holy Mass and think about what we are saying in our worship.

Leslie, what a shame, but not surprising though, huh? folks just are not interested intaking the time to revisit and get to know the prayers for the most important thing they do each week!! The Mass is so sacred!

Anyway, glad you went and you can be the one singing and praying the new prayers the loudest with a smile on your face with joy!

Hugs!

We had a practice session at church yesterday. And when we get to the 27th the priest will sing his words before the parts that we need to remember to say different. At least that's what I think the plan is.
