The new responses? They're not supposed to until the beginning of the next Church year which begins in the fall.

I am starting to say the new responses in my head while I still say the current ones. I sure hope I don't start blurting out the wrong things before the time.

A good friend went to a workshop on the new translation. I certainly don't believe that no Masses have been valid since the Council. I do wonder if in some places things were carried too far.
In the Byzantine liturgy, we never left "And with your spirit." So, I both remember it from childhood, and from 20 years in this Eastern rite of the Catholic church.
I agree with cj that kids are often shortchanged. They can learn amazing amounts of things, and understand it as well.
I know that in the U.K. in Sept. and Oct. the parts of the Mass which stay the same are going to be introduced. We'll be there in Oct. and are looking forward to it.
I believe that our Holy Father is a truly inspired man, and this is a good thing. I'm excited.

hello beautiful people of faith and love,
I apologize for this late response..the prayer I mentioned was from sweet St. Therese, Little Flower(of Lisieux)
God be with you all.
I am a music minister(at St. John Bosco HS and St. Bruno Catholic Church in Whittier, CA) and I am looking forward to all of the changes..it keeps me on my toes and I am reminded each day to remain humble and willing to do His will especially if it means pushing me out of my comfort zone a bit..through challenge comes miracles. I am ready, accepting and honored to be in the presence of those who know more than I...which is an everyday occurance. May He continue to use me and my humble gift of song through the easy and challenging times.
God has already blessed me in the presence of you all here in this thread..I learn more each and every day from you..thank you.

IAJOEB - I like your attitude about obeying. You're quite right! I realize years ago that sometimes obedience comes before understanding.

BELLACUDDLES (Barbara) - I'm glad that you are being positive about it all. I disagree that the words are too complicated or difficult for children. We gain nothing, and neither do they, when we 'dumb things down' for them. When a child attends Mass with their parents and hears the same word, even a difficult one, every week, they will soon be comfortable with it. That is the only way they can learn. I am always taken with how the grade ones at my school love learning about the Holy Eucharist in preparation for their First Holy Communion. They are so proud when they figure out how to say transubstantiation! They practise and practise until they get it right!

I left the church for years because the priest who married my husband and me said some mean things in his sermon about us getting married. I found Jesus again and that let me back to the Catholic Church.
Well I am back for 15 years and no matter what is said or who says it .... I believe in what the pope tells me to believe. That to me is what faith is all about.
I love the Trinity and the Consecration.
I love the Pope
I may not understand but as long as I am not asked to sin, I will have faith that I will.
In the meantime , I obey.

I am so happy we are returning to the actual words of Jesus at the consecration. I always loved the beauty and reverence of the Latin Mass and the eloquent prayers. I have been carrying around my 1962 Missal and refer to it often for the prayers before and after communion, the examination of conscience and many other features. English in one column and Latin in the other on each page. I think we are going back to the most beautiful form for the Mass. Which I view as progress! Alleluia!

I found out about it last fall at our church and we also had a huge evening seminar about it at a nearby parish. I'm not really wild about it...seems like we are going backwards and not really liking the word consubstantiate....how hard that will be for the kids pronounce and understand, but I will be partaking in it and make the best of it with a positive attitude, even though I do sound negative about it...I really will look at it favorably. It's happening anyway!! God bless all of you!

I liked what Father Z had to say! He seems pretty cool.

USED2BAGODDESS - you raise a good point. I was speaking with this woman who claims that the Tridentine Mass is the only 'valid' one, and that any other is invalid, and we may as well not celebrate it at all, as it is a sin to take part! She had me with her talk of traditional ways and conservative nature, etc., until that point.

When I heard that the dear priest (now a monsignor) who brought me into the Church (brought me to Jesus!) was against her 'group', I knew there must be something 'off'. The priest in question is very traditional, loves Latin, is very loyal to the Magisterium, etc. While I would love to attend the Tridentine Mass to see what it is like, I no longer worry that others are not valid.

This priest often would say (according to my dh, who knew him longer, and asked him questions about the topic), it all depends on whether you believe that the Second Vatican Council was inspired by the Holy Spirit or not.

You mentioned that Jesus would not have let us be in error for 40 years. This priest also said in response to people who do not believe in the Real Presence - Jesus would have known that we would keep the Blessed Sacrament in the Tabernacles around the world. He would know what was to come. He would never have told His disciples that we were to eat His flesh and drink His blood, if that is not what He meant. He would never allow us to worship bread if it were not really He.

I have a friend who joined the 'old mass' group. Can't think of their name right now and claims that the consecrations have been invalid since the word change.

I heard a Catholic speaker point out that Jesus promised to be with us and the gates of hell shall not prevail. He also gave the church the ability to loose and bind.

He pointed out that the Holy Spirit was promised to us and would not be taken away from us and there is no way that God would have allowed us to have invalid masses for 40+ years.

I think there is truth in that.

Interestingly enough, the new revised Missal here in Canada is called the new Revised English Roman Missal, because the French does not need changing. Many, if not all of the responses in the new translation, are what we say in French already!

For example, in French, when the priest says:
"Le Seigneur soit avec vous." (The Lord be with you).

We already say:
"Et avec votre esprit." (And with your spirit)

Our priest has been mentioning things to us for months now, to help us prepare mentally that there will be changes.

OBLAIDON is right, though, we are not to use the new responses until the Church as a whole does.

My dh (a VP at a Catholic school) went to the big Catholic Educators Conference in New Orleans recently, and he picked up a great pamphlet about the changes. It has a pull-out 'cheat sheet' of just the changed responses. It also has explanations for why there are the changes. It is a good booklet. It is called "A Guide to the New Translation of The Mass" and is published by Ascension Press and written by Edward SRI.

I like many of the changes, in fact almost all. I cannot remember the one change that I do not like, I'll have to look at the info again to find it.

Since I read a pamphlet about the Tridentine Mass, and how the words of Jesus were changed from what He said at the Last Supper, I have wondered about the words of consecration. I prayed about it, and was relieved to see that the new translation includes the original words of Jesus!

We attend the novus ordo mass in Latin. Our priest has also been posting many of the 'accurate translations' of the prayers in our bulletin for years now.

The changes won't be as dramatic for us as I fear it may be for some. I think our priest is secretly dancing a jig for joy at a more accurate translation finally coming forth!~ emoticon

Here is an answer to my question:
It seems to me that we, priests and congregations alike, should use the liturgical text that is in force now. We should wait until the new, corrected version is in force.

Saint Theresa's Prayer

May today there be peace within.
May you trust God that you are exactly where you are meant to be.
May you not forget the infinite possibilities that are born of faith.
May you use those gifts that you have received, and pass on the love that has been given to you.
May you be content knowing you are a child of God.
Let this presence settle into your bones, and allow your soul the freedom to sing,
Dance, praise and love.

Here is a webinar that explains many of the changes:
www.loyolapress.com/roman-missal-web
in
ar-explains-changes-in-catholic-massR>.htm

I think the changes may be a little awkward at first, especially for people who have become accustomed to the present text.

I like the changes.

In the Nicene Creed: Consubstancial with the Father. Which means "Having the same substance" in substitute for "Being with the father". Yes, this seems more accurate.

The use of I instead of "we". Even though we are a group, I can't speak for everyone else.

I am hoping these changes will bring on a new excitement for our youth. It is a change that they can be a part of. The youth and us will have to learn the changes together.

I have a question. When the priest says, "May the Peace of the Lord be with you". Our response to the priest is "and with your spirit". Will respond to everyone in the same manner? Can we respond to each other "and with your spirit" before Nov. 27th?

The Roman Missal will be....has been revised and is ready for the new Church calendar starting on November 27th (the first Sunday of Advent). Are you learning about it at your parishes? Did you know this was happening?

Let's talk about it.
