She's still active, CJ. She posts a blog entry about every three weeks (and it's all content from her books and programs, so they are in themselves indirect advertising), and she is in direct one-on-one contact with her 'friends'... that's how I stumbled over her... we have 'friends' in common.

While I'm glad she isn't super active and 'in-your-face', I feel pretty certain that she shouldn't be here at all. By the time I finished gathering up all of the info in my post, I was just mad. She is absolutely advertising her book and her e-products, and I wonder just how many of those 'friends' she is actually coaching privately.

I'd pretty much decided that I was going to report her (just cc my post here to the Spark powers that be and Chris Downey personally), and let Spark decide if they want her here... from the rules you just posted, I think not. However, if you think I should just hold off, I will.

I actually emailed her, as did a non-spark friend of mine over the icon thing way back when, but she never replied to either of us. I don't even have words for how disturbed I feel finding her here... and that says something, lol!

Thanks for showing up so quickly... I feel a little less fussed now that I feel like I've told someone!

Okay, in the guide to posting in sparkpeople teams, the following is mentioned:

Blogs can be ads, probably, it doesn't mention those.

Let's keep an eye on this. If she continues to post ads, we will report her.

Oh boy.

She still annoys me and, yes, I am offended, too Ramona.

The only thing that is heartening is the fact that she joined last June, made a half-dozen posts, and then seems to have left the site.

I am going to read the spark rules again to refresh my memory. If she is still active, and actively promoting herself, we may be able to ask for her to be told to stop. I really don't think we will get anywhere speaking from the offended point of view, unfortunately.

Off to check the rules ...

Hi, everybody! I never thought I'd be coming back to this thread, but in cruising around SparkPeople yesterday I stumbled upon the woman who created that offensive icon referred to in the original focus of this thread... she's now a Spark Member, and she has the icon on her page!!!!!!!!

I'm in shock a bit... and I really don't know what, if anything can be done about it.

First of all, I think that she is here under false pretences to further her own agenda... she's a self-professed weight loss expert, and she makes her living off of her books, weight loss coaching and selling her e-programs to those looking to lose weight, as well as from her 'art' in relation to her weight loss philosophy. She can't possibly have any use for the site except to further her own agenda. In evidence of that, she's been here only 8 months, and she has 719 friends, in those 8 months she has made only 5 team posts (each of them in some way promoting her agenda either directly or by her signature link), and every one of her blog posts links to her own website and/or her blog on Beliefnet.com!!!!!

Isn't this against every one of Spark's usage rules?

I have NO PROBLEM reporting her, but I'd like some other opinions before I do so.

I think it would also carry more weight (no pun intended) if I weren't the only one expressing upset at this.

Thoughts anyone?

God bless!
Ramona

I'm not usually one to get involved in discussions like this - they're sensitive!

I would like to say, though, that before I became Catholic, this "cartoon" would have been simply entertaining, stupid, silly, whatever.
I have been blessed to see the Holiness of Jesus and His Blessed Mother, and now the cartoon is truly offensive. I have to keep in mind that that people who create such things simply don't know this holiness or sacredness or glory - and I have to move on and pray for them rather than be offended.

I must say, though, that I admire the handling of this affair by all here!

I have read, with various emotions, this thread. First and foremost is offense at the icon and the idea behind it. Although I understand no offense was intended (I assume), it does still irk me.

However, also high in my mind at the moment is how brilliantly Ramona has handled and continues to handle this situation. Thank you so much Ramona!! I second the comment that one poster has stated, namely that you definitely have a way with words! You are an inspiration to me - to speak with such eloquence about a subject that greatly disturbed you is wonderful. Thank you for the comments to the woman who first used the icon, the intent to follow up with Coach Dean, and also the intent to contact the original website. I will consider contacting Dr. Dobson myself as well about this topic.
God bless you all!

Ramona, you are definitely a great encouragement to me. I wasn't sure what to expect of this thread, but I have to agree with you on every part of it. I grew up in the Greek Orthodox church, and the idea that someone would pervert the image of our Mother sickens me greatly.

And the other comment that gets to me is the pure double standard about Catholic bashing as comedy. Whenever there's a joke about Jewish or Islamic people, the teller usually looks around to make sure they don't offend someone. With Catholics, people don't flinch. It's just the culture we're in, and it's awful. I have several close friends that are priests or seminarians, and the disrespect they get on a daily basis (and that's just what I see when I'm with them) is outrageous.

I will pray an extra Rosary today, just because I'm so irritated.

Mother of God, pray for us!

Hi, again, everybody. FYI, it seems the woman who is using the image for her Spark team has made the team private (by invitation only), so that's great. People will not accidentally stumble across it and be neither offended, or negatively influenced, by its disrespect. So, it is no longer an actual 'Spark' issue. What she does within the 'privacy of her own team' is her business.

I, personally, still think there are issues to be addressed here, and I am working on my responses.

Coach Dean is a different matter. I will be emailing him to express my disappointment about his response, or rather, lack there-of (I wonder what the response would have been if the American flag were being desicrated, or if it were in fact an Islamic or Jewish symbol/artifact being used). I will re-direct him to check out this thread again, and see for himself that I am not the only one offended, so please, alert others and ask them to express their opinions here.

Next, the web-site from which the offending image comes from has a 'contact the artist' link. I will be emailing her directly to tell her what my reaction is to her use of the icons in this manner (she has others that are very much worse than this one - look under 'cards' if you've the stomach for it).

The idea of contacting the Catholic League is FANTASTIC, and I would encourage everyone who is offended by this web-site to contact them. Dr. Dobson would be another person to alert.

Contact Information for the Catholic League:
450 Seventh Avenue
New York, NY 10123
(212) 371-3191
Fax: (212) 371-3394
www.catholicleague.org/feedback.php

Dr. James Dobson
family.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/family.c
fg
/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=14190

In addition, I have alerted everyone I know to the existance of this website, and have encouraged them to respond as they feeled moved to do so.

I, too, have had enough of this sort of disrespect in the name of 'art' or 'freedom of expression' and I guess I'm finally willing to publically defend my faith against this sort of disrespect.

I am honoured to be in the presence of others who are willing to do the same.

what makes me upset and sad is that it seems that it is free reign on catholic bashing.
On another site I have been on , there is this statue of Jesus doing a thumbs up.
i mean, would they bash any other religion's symbols? there is a group called catholic league who I think can be alerted to this.
They ought to ask themselves , would they put a Jewish , islamic , symbol up there and put glasses on it, a scale and make fun of the title?
I cannot even imagine anyone would get away with that.
Imagine.
I am sick of this kind of thing.
I hope they do get lots of letters, I am going to write one myself and tell the other Catholic forum that I visit.

What a way with words you have. So gentle yet persuasive. I could not have done a better job. Perhaps in all of this we've been made aware of the real problem and that is the original website.

Thanks, I'll be alerting my Catholic Mothers yahoo group about this, and ask them to write to the website owner, if at the very least we can teach them about the real blessed mother and not this mockery.

Peace be with you!

Peace,
JK

UPDATE:

She must have thought about it a little longer, because this followed in short order:

"This is the site that the picture came from www.ourladyofweightloss.com/
I have thought long and hard about what you said, and I don't find anything even remotely hostile, offensive or in a mocking fashion about this picture. I have taken it off as my profile picture, out of respect for your feelings but that is all. You are by no means obligated to join my SparksTeam."

My response:

"Hi! Seeing the site you 'borrowed' the picture from doesn't alleviate my disappointment, or the offence to my sensibilities. In fact, the site itself actually exacerbates both my disappointment and my sense of offence. I do get the 'tongue in cheek' aspect of the whole thing, but it is a mockery of many things that are fundamentally and spiritually dear to me. The image is perverting an icon that is used in every Byzantine church, and that is held in esteem by those of the faith. Doing what has been done to this picture is very close to spitting on the altar, burning crosses, or violating the blessed sacrament in some way. Perhaps you might be interesting in learning a little more about the rite itself, before you judge my position.

Again, I don't expect you to understand or appreciate my perspective, but I do appreciate you hearing me out. It's a rare thing to be able to speak one's mind in this world without vicious back-lash.

Good luck with your team!

God Bless!
Ramona"

Ah well, we can do what we can to honor our own beliefs. We can't force other people to honor (or even necessarily respect) our beliefs, too. That's what living in a country of the sort of freedom we enjoy means.

...So, sometimes direct and honest does work! :) I'm so glad that there was no malice intended, and it was just 'thoughtlessness' of sorts. This woman has my utmost respect, and I will respond with a Spark Goodie telling her so! Have a great day everybody!

Oh! Here is the response she sent me:

"Well, I am at a loss for words to be honest.

I am Catholic as well, born and raised. And I strive to make sure that I treat everyone with the up most respect. I have raised two children to be the very same way. I am appauled that I have unknowingly offended someone, anyone. I am almost even too embarassed to send you this email. But I am, and I will find something else to use as a picture.

Once again, a very sincere apology to you, and whoever else you may think I might have offended, unintentionally."

Here's my response to her:

"Thank you so very much! I can't tell you how much I appreciate your response. I was worried about emailing you, but I try to believe people in general have the best of intentions and that all we need to do is communicate respectfully with each other!

Your daughters have a very wise and courageous mom! I'm so glad you didn't hide behind 'embarrassment'. We wouldn't have had the opportunity to be 'human' together. And there is no need for embarrassment... your experience didn't allow for you to see what someone else might. The measure of a person is not the mistakes they make, but how they respond to the lessons that come their way. You're a HERO in my book! :)

I was disappointed that your page is private... I was heading over to leave you a Spark Goodie! You surely deserve one!

Also, what will the focus of your team be? I didn't get a real sense of that... I think a number of Catholics use the "OUR LADY OF..." idea... me, too. I think Our Lady cares about everything (all the minutae) that matters to us, big and small. She's a pretty good place to take our cares and frustrations! It was just using the icon itself in that manner that bothered me (...and I guess a couple of other people).

So, may God abundantly bless you, and those you love, in every way that you require. May he hold you gently in the palm of his hand in a very personal way, and may you rest in the fullness of his love, his grace, his strength, his wisdom, his rescue, his redemption, his healing, his inspiration, his restoration and his mercy as you require it! May you carry in your heart always an extra special awareness of God's great love for you; and as you rise to new life in Him this Easter season, may you feel his sweet and gentle touch upon your life, and may you see his miracles all around you. May this time with Him quench your thirst and satisfy your appetite in ways you couldn't even dream. I pray in the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen!

Sincerely,
Ramona

P.S. Your real picture is really beautiful... you have a GREAT smile!"

It may not be meant to porray a "real" religious figure, but it used a real picture of Mary and the Christ Child. Have you gotten any response from the two who made it up? I noticed one of them has a "private" Spark page -- perhaps she is afraid of a reaction?

When I was working, we "prayed" to Our Lady of IDB Control (integrated database control). I never felt anyone was mocking religion. It was more of a de-stressor. In fact, when you came into the office in the morning, you could tell whether there were database problems by whether people were laughing or not. We always joked when things were bad.

OTOH, this is not a small office, where everyone knows one another and has the same goal. (We all want to get healthier, but the actual goals are very different. Some people actually need to GAIN weight.) Also, my office never had a picture, so you were free to take it as you wanted. (Personally, I took it rather seriously. Certainly, Our Lady can help us with technical issues.)

If these two want a picture of "Our Lady of Weight Loss," they can make the whole thing a cartoon instead of just portions of it. (Again, I have nothing against "Our Lady of Weight Loss" because, again, I think she is a good one from whom to request help.) By using a picture of Our Lady and her Son as the central portion of their cartoon, they are, perhaps inadvertantly, mocking us. I think Coach Dean should take a second look and reconsider.

Here's the response I got:

"Thanks for the report. I took a look, and I don't think there was an
intent to mock anyone's religious perspective involved. The icon is
clearly not meant to portray a "real" religious figure, and using the
phrase "Our Lady of...." in connection with some non-religious theme is
very common practice that I think is meant to convey the idea that many
people take a subject (like weight loss) as seriously as religion, and
often approach it the same way ("praying" for results, etc). It is a
little satirical, but not against religion. Just the opposite--it's
poking fun at the idea of taking something like weight loss too seriously
and/or going about it the wrong way. I don't think it would be
appropriate for me to ask them to stop using this icon.

Coach Dean"

Comments anyone?

I'm going to be praying and thinking about what I do next...

This is how I handled it: first I reported our thread as an 'inappropriate post' to use this page to draw attention to the team page in question, and then I sent the following email to the person using the icon:

"Hi! First of all, congratulations on your weight loss. It's quite an accomplishment. I wish you the best in achieving your ultimate goals.

My reason for sparkmailing you is to comment on your profile and team image. While I admire the creativity, while I think I understand the 'tongue in cheek' element, and while I am assuming (at this point) no offense was intended, I am offended by your using a religious symbol, one that is sacred to me, in such a cavalier fashion. I perceive the image you have created as being subtly hostile.

I am Catholic, raised in the Byzantine rite, and icons are an important part of our identity, and linked directly to the traditions and practices that are at the heart of our faith. While I don't expect you to understand my perspective, I would appreciate it if you would reconsider, and find another way to express your opinion without using a symbol sacred to me, in such a mocking fashion.

One of the things I value most about SparkPeople is that they work very hard to maintain an atmosphere of respect and encouragement for everyone. I would hope everyone would participate with the same ideals in mind.

Thanks for your time, and for hearing me out. I really appreciate it.

Sincerely,
Ramona"

'Freedom of expression' should apply back, should it not? Bottom line, this particular issue is not going to spoil my Spark experience, but I would prefer that it be addressed. Where's the line with respect to what a PUBLIC forum will tolerate, when religious symbols, values, practices are being disrespected?

I guess I've drawn my personal line. I don't think it helps any of us when we tolerate disrespect toward one of us.

Hi! I went and took a look... I think I understand what offends you (not sure because you don't elaborate). I don't really like it either - I'm Ukrainian Catholic, and icons are very dear to me - not to mention all of the other religious symbols they have mis-used. I think this has crossed the line of 'freedom of expression vs. respect for religious beliefs', but I'm not sure how SparkPeople will view it.

I'm going to be praying that this is just an act of sincere ingnorance on the part of the creator, as opposed to a genuine attempt at mockery of the ideals of others (I personally think it's insensitive, at the least, and rude).

Thanks for posting the 'heads up'!
