I haven't read Wisdom, but I am one who, if things work out for me, I want to share it with others. It doesn't always work out and a wrong impression is given. For example I have lost some weight, great, but when I tried to influence someone who is much heavier than me and with bigger diabetic problems than me, the motivation given to that person was rejected. I bowed out and said not another word, although this person is very very close to me.

I know that I am not perfect in any sense of the word, but I pray often for guidance and for the Holy Spirit to guide me in what I do and think. It hardly ever works out, because something usually happens and I forget myself. I suppose I am only human, but I am not happy with me most of the time.

I hope I'm not out of context here.

Take each day as it comes.

I have the privilege of lectoring at Tuesday and Friday Masses. Every Lent, I get to read that passage from Wisdom. This year, I actually thought of Hell: In Hell, the sight of good people will be painful. The sight and presence of God even more painful.

BTW, I find this an excellent idea. Some of the First Readings cry out for an explanation, especially when they describe the temple.

Oh, but I am so one of those wrong-doers! As often as not, I DO 'push back' and I am not always crazy about the 'mirrors' that are held up in front of me; but this is what I love about our faith - we are a salvation people, and every day is a new should we choose to make it so. I'm grateful for today's reading (and you for posting it) and its mirror because, thanks to the Holy Spirit, the mirror reflected back a glimpse of who I might be if I but rely on God.

GOd Bless!

Ramona,

This was the response that I was really hoping for. We have the opportunity to have these readings available to us, and the time of lent to reflect on our relationship with God. Your response shows that you're not one of those "wrongdoers" that we have read.

Thanks for your insight.

Thank you, I don't make to the daily masses as often as I'd like to because of work. This is a great idea. Thank you again for posting

Hi! I'm pretty new around here - actually just posted my intro. I'm glad to be here. I do so hope this becomes a daily feature!

I'm not sure if the intention is to stimulate conversation about the readings, or not, but I'd like to comment on how they have affected me.

The reading from Wisdom has really touched me. I don't really recall hearing it before. "Let us beset the just one, because he is obnoxious to us; he sets himself against our doings, Reproaches us for transgressions of the law and charges us with violations of our training.... merely to see him is a hardship for us, Because his life is not like that of others, and different are his ways."

The speakers know they are doing wrong. They don't deny that, or even seem confused about the censure they feel. Because merely being in His presence is a hardship for them, their response is persecution - not mending their ways, not trying to do better, not holding their hearts open to learning a better way, not holding themselves to a higher standard - "Let us condemn him to a shameful death." Let's just shame him and kill him.

If this could be done to Jesus, why would I be surprised to experience this in my own life?

This 'new lifestyle' journey is interesting. It either brings out the best in others, or the worst. I'm just beginning, and I haven't lost anywhere the amount of weight I'm intending to, but I already feel the reaction to my presence among those who don't want to be reminded of their own eating habits, their own failing health, their own challenges. While I'm quietly going about my business, certain people in my life seem intent on turning this into a battle over my need to lose the weight and their need to remain comfortable where they are.

The reading reminds me that when I'm tempted to 'push back' that I must instead remember that I, too, am "a child of the LORD" and that my destiny is "blessed of God." Nothing else matters here. Even though my patience is tested, I can (and will) respond with gentleness (even though it's not my nature). This is how I will win converts to my 'healthy lifestyle' and maybe even to the Lord!

Thanks so much for giving me the opportunity to reflect on this! I welcome your responses - yea, or nay!

God Bless!
Ramona

Kind of reminds me that I used to be in the habit of doing the reading on days I didn't make it to Mass. I should get back into that habit.

Thanks for the post. It was really nice to read. As a child I didn't go to mass and as a family we are trying to be regular about it. I can't make it during the week so this helps, thank you.

Just remember..........one day at a time;-)

Thank you for posting this, it is an amazing idea to keep us all grounded. Will you continue to post these every day or was it just a today thing? If not, I can do it, or maybe we can all take turns posting the daily mass readings. I think that would be nice. Please let me know what you guys want to do and I'll make it happen!

Here's the Psalm so people don't need to search.

Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 34:17-18, 19-20, 21 and 23

R. (19a) The Lord is close to the brokenhearted.

The LORD confronts the evildoers,
to destroy remembrance of them from the earth.
When the just cry out, the LORD hears them,
and from all their distress he rescues them.

R. The Lord is close to the brokenhearted.

The LORD is close to the brokenhearted;
and those who are crushed in spirit he saves.
Many are the troubles of the just man,
but out of them all the LORD delivers him.

R. The Lord is close to the brokenhearted.

He watches over all his bones;
not one of them shall be broken.
The LORD redeems the lives of his servants;
no one incurs guilt who takes refuge in him.

R. The Lord is close to the brokenhearted.

It's amazing how different parts hit different people. Having read this, it really didn't strike me in any way, but I think that's because I was still contemplating the first reading in my head. The reading from Wisdom really puts me in the mood of the Passion. I'm reading the little black book for lent that goes through John's account of the Passion, and this reading really gives me a perspective of the Pharisee's going after Jesus.

i like this idea ... funny, i was at Mass this morning, and today's response was what caught mt attention -- in fact, i even pulled out a piece of paper and wrote it down (of course, i don't have it in front of me now). but it was something like:

"the Lord heals the broken hearted".

perfect timing b/c a friend of mine asked for prayers this morning, and she sounded broken-hearted ... i'll have to send her this quote, and also todays readings.

thanks for posting!

I've always wanted to find a place to discuss the daily mass readings because I can never make it to mass due to my work schedule. So, here are the readings for today.

Friday of the Fourth Week of Lent

Reading 1: Wis 2:1a, 12-22

The wicked said among themselves, thinking not aright: “Let us beset the just one, because he is obnoxious to us; he sets himself against our doings, Reproaches us for transgressions of the law and charges us with violations of our training. He professes to have knowledge of God and styles himself a child of the LORD. To us he is the censure of our thoughts; merely to see him is a hardship for us, Because his life is not like that of others, and different are his ways. He judges us debased; he holds aloof from our paths as from things impure. He calls blest the destiny of the just and boasts that God is his Father. Let us see whether his words be true; let us find out what will happen to him. For if the just one be the son of God, he will defend him and deliver him from the hand of his foes. With revilement and torture let us put him to the test that we may have proof of his gentleness and try his patience. Let us condemn him to a shameful death; for according to his own words, God will take care of him.” These were their thoughts, but they erred; for their wickedness blinded them, and they knew not the hidden counsels of God; neither did they count on a recompense of holiness nor discern the innocent souls’ reward.

Gospel: Jn 7:1-2, 10, 25-30

Jesus moved about within Galilee;
he did not wish to travel in Judea,
because the Jews were trying to kill him.
But the Jewish feast of Tabernacles was near.

But when his brothers had gone up to the feast,
he himself also went up, not openly but as it were in secret.

Some of the inhabitants of Jerusalem said,
“Is he not the one they are trying to kill?
And look, he is speaking openly and they say nothing to him.
Could the authorities have realized that he is the Christ?
But we know where he is from.
When the Christ comes, no one will know where he is from.”
So Jesus cried out in the temple area as he was teaching and said,
“You know me and also know where I am from.
Yet I did not come on my own,
but the one who sent me, whom you do not know, is true.
I know him, because I am from him, and he sent me.”
So they tried to arrest him,
but no one laid a hand upon him,
because his hour had not yet come.
