Kathy love reading about your gardening. We do the same with our garden produce and fruit. We give away and get back in return. Think more people are going about bartering more today than ever. I love the idea of taking in a jalapeno plant for the winter. I may try that. I also love the idea of starting a cherry from a cutting. I may try that as well. We have some wonderful bush cherries and they produce much better than our tree cherry. Our climate here won't allow us to grow sweet cherries so it is either one of the pie cherry or the bush cherries. We have done the propagation of blueberries that way and our one and only plant that lived out of 3 is now big enough to produce really well this year. Next year should be it's best. We thought of doing another cutting or 2 this year but 4 bushes keep us really busy with more than enough berries for us and anyone else who wants to come out and pick. We used to have 9 bushes until the heat the past 2 summers killed 5. But those 9 bushes worked us to death. Not enough people around here either that want to pick for themsleves. They'd rather someone do it for them but then if you charge them $10/gallon which is what we did sell them for, they complained how high they were but then they go to the local grocers and buy a pint for $5. DUH!!!

Today is my guild board meeting. Going to be taking all my things to change out in the gallery today. All I bring home will be going in my etsy store. I may try doing the local shop near me again. My biggest complaint there was she took months to pay me when I sold something..so leery of that. I'm too much a control freak for having to waiting. Our guild's gallery pays each month so that is much better for me.

Kathy I'm the same I love sharing the preserves etc that I make, just as long as I get some of the bottles back I'm happy. I'll probably put in a pile of tomatoes this year as I have quite a few heirloom seeds I want to try.

I went to the hospital yesterday and the surgeon didn't think that an operation would make a great deal of difference to the strength lost in my arm. I'm fine with that really as I don't want to go into hospital let alone have an operation.

My computer (or should I say computers) died last night and I was unable to get either of them to start up. I played around with my previous laptop this morning and tried the driver repair disc and the computer started and has been running all day, let's hope it starts up again tomorrow morning.

I love it, Kathy! Garden-sharing is one of the best parts of growing one! Our neighbors have fruit trees and share their abundance with us every year and we help her with firewood and other things.

emoticon I have a few favorites so far but I've planted them so they don't all bloom at same time, so I'll still be having surprises popping up in Oct and possibly Nov. (last year they were blooming through November due to summer like conditions) So far my favorites are the beefmaster (for hubbys sandwiches in his lunch box), Homestead Heirloom (I like the amount and sizes these plants put out!), Park's Whopper, I've been adding the Roma's to homemade guacamole dip this past 2 weeks, and the Super Sweet 100 which are growing in pots on my deck and I grab them for salads emoticon or a quick cold dish which involves cucumbers, squash, onion, etc.

A few of you have asked why so many (?) I love trying a variety of tomatoes every year and I give a lot away. When I give my neighbor a bagful - he gives me cucumbers and squash, when I give my gf a bagful (she gives me herbs) I do grow herbs so she gives me the ones I don't grow. I give the mailman a bagful and he brings my mail to the door even though he doesn't have to. I gave the insurance man a bagful yesterday and my husband's boss. We still have a lot of green ones so we've been enjoying fried green tomatoes and they'll turn red about the time the other plants start dwindling down. Also, there are a few with flowers, as you all know, they are getting ready to make tomatoes for Sept and Oct.

We have a few pumpkins that are the size of melons now. Very fun to watch. emoticon The blueberries are doing well, I actually took a few cuttings and have started a few more with root hormone powder. I also did this with our cherry tree (that is a first for me so I hope it takes)

And my peppers (5 plants, 2 varieties: sweet and jalapeno) are sooooo cute! I was commenting last night while we sat on the deck, "look how pretty and shiny the jalapenos are!" LOL! I brought one of the plants in over the past winter and it is blooming all over the place. I put it on the deck in June. It stayed green and happy in my front window all winter and now it is producing like crazy outside on the deck. emoticon

Have a great day everyone!

I know what you mean about those bags, Cathy. It felt great to get rid of 6 big bags of books last week, PLUS a whole pile that just went into the trash. I don't know why I do that to myself.

That river baptism reminded me of an old friend talking about his river baptism. He said, "It was wonderful, but sad. I was such a sinner that when my sins were washed away, fish DIED all the way to the ocean!"

I found 2 bags that I had just stuck stuff in and while it was so pleasant out this morning, I sat out on the porch and went thru them and emptied both of them--a lot of it was just trash that I just had not bothered to put in the trash can---3 of the 5 magazines I found where looked thru and put in the take to school pile and some things I need to figure out where to put them but that won't take too long---heading out to get new tires shortly so that is why they can wait---felt good to get that taken care of.

Cathy...when you said Grouch cat I think of that cat that is all over the internet with the big frown. I love it!!!

Been busy. Got a lot of things ready to take to the gallery tomorrow. It is our monthly board meeting and also time to change out artwork. I have quite a bit to take this round. And then last night I pulled out my Needl' Love Threads books and pulled out some autumn things to start working on. 2 hooked rugs and some wool applique things. Still working on my studio organizing. Slow progress.

Jules I hope you are doing ok. Thinking about you. emoticon

Moved some TV tables to my son's old room closet--also made space for the big suitcase in there, too---then moved my scrapbooking stuff in there instead of the dining room--also made a space for our old cat to sit by the window in the dining room---poor cat has been shifted around a lot with my mom here--she does not get along with the other 2 cats---but then she never has gotten along with any other cat we have had---she is a grouch! Me too Jules. It is so bad when you are in so much pain all the time.

Today is partially rainy and since I finished the coasters I decided instead of hooking another project to work on a cross stitched stocking. I really want to make 2 this years. Also working on my studio organizing. Slow going with that.

Another granddaughter was baptized this morning. They had 9 and were to have it at the river but their pastor had to go somewhere quickly this afternoon.
Got my whimsy sheep rug mounted on the frame and wired to hang. Finished the hooking on the 4 coasters and am backing them today and will get them blocked tomorrow. Will take all to the gallery on Wednesday when I got to my monthly board meeting. Busy week ahead.

My pickling peppers are flowering and are going to be popping out like crazy right about the time we leave to go camping. I'll have to have my house sitters keep them picked for me until we get back. I love the smell of the garden too.

Jules, I hope you are able to find some relief and that, if surgery is your only solution, you are able to get it scheduled soon.

Trying to beat the heat around here. Think we'll head to the coast today and do some of our shopping.

We got a nice 3 inch rain yesterday and last night. The apples are swelling. Also noticed the birds and squirrels have found it. But we had some left over corn from our chicken days so poured it out and the squirrels found it and it is keeping them busy for a little while.

Hubby has run to town to do his weekly visits. I swear he likes gabbing with his friends more than I do mine. I've been working on the shabby chic frame for one of my rugs. I painted it black, then put a coat of wood glue on it. And now white. The wood glue makes the white crackle just a little bit..really gives it a much nicer look than the bought crackle finish stuff and much cheaper. After this one side dries then will flip it over and do the last coat of white on the back side. Then will wire it for hanging and tack on the rug. I've finished hooking 3 of the coasters so it is going faster than I had planned. Will get that other one finished and have them ready by Wednesday for my guild meeting.

I too love the smells of the garden. Today was nice enough to go out and do a bit of weeding of the veggie patches. An odd job for a right handed person to have to do with the left hand.

Despite being Winter here and cold and miserable, the garden is doing pretty good. The cabbages, cauliflowers, leeks and kohl rabi are going great guns. I have finally got turnips growing and not just greens. Finally got the back lawn mowed even though it looks like the rats have been chewing at it.

I too love being in the garden and smelling all the different smells. I love the smell of tomatoes. Right now our fig tree has a wonderful smell. And today we are getting rain!!! So good for our fruit trees.

Youngest son and family came out yesterday. Miss Molly has gone into the "whining" stage..but she is still fun. She hates bugs of any kind and squeals if she sees any. Son had gotten new used pickup. His other truck had large interest rate and he got this one for much much lower and it is top of the line Ram. It is newer than his other truck. Middle son comes in today from his hitch in Africa. He is switching ships so will be in the gulf from now on. They were sending his ship to Australia and he hates flying and being in the air that long was a little much for him. He is head driller so can pretty well call his shots in the company. The youngest son who has been in the gulf is going to Africa next spring.

I'm hooking some coasters. I sold the set at the gallery so needed to make more to replace them. I have finished the hooking part on one. Also painted a big frame black and when dry will coat it with wood glue and then when that dries will paint it white. The wood glue will make the white coat crackle without the tackiness that the crackle finish products do. I will be tacking my whimsical sheep rug to it when finished. Gathering some things to be juried for the the gallery.

emoticon I'm usually pretty active on my groups - I just wanted to let you all know - I'm here and I'm doing great! I've been way too busy with being a mom, my job, being a wife and an avid gardener. We are at the height of gardening here in July - trying to keep up. I planted over 60 types of tomatoes this year and they are now popping all over the place. YAAAAAAYYYYYY!!!! emoticon I love gardening - neighbors saw all my tomatoes and said, "you're gonna have a lot of weeding to do" but anyone who knows me knows that I love being outside - any excuse and Weeding is relaxing for me. I love being on my hands and knees, in the middle of the garden, where no one can see me. I don't think - I just enjoy the sounds of the birds (I can even hear the hummingbirds buzzing above me), I love the smell. emoticon Have you ever noticed the strong scent of tomatoes is on the vine itself? I come in smelling like tomatoes. Lol! emoticon emoticon

So, I'll be more active on here when my garden slows down but for now, I must keep my garden happy so that it keeps us happy. I made homemade guacamole yesterday - the tomatoes, cilantro and onion came from my garden. It was fabulous - if you want the recipe, remind me and I'll post it on here. My husband and I sat on the deck and snacked on it. He said, he could just eat it with a spoon. Avocados are a great price right now and perfect ripeness. emoticon

Enjoy your weekend everyone! I am! emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

Over here there are some communities that will pay for a house and all sorts of things for the doctor and his family if he becomes the general practitioner for their town. A lot of other "doctors" do it for the money and the glory or want to specialize in a certain field. General practitioners can see a myriad of diseases and conditions that a specialist would never see.

On a good point I have an appointment with the hospital on Tuesday so I might actually get something done within the 4 week window. While I don't really want an operation, I do want an arm that has some strength, I still have a lot to do.

I hope you have a great visit with your family, no matter what happens in life family is the most important thing we have.

Part of our problem with the medical system is that there are fewer and fewer doctors and nurses. Noone wants to put in the effort of going to school so long to become either one. And now with the new health care laws, many of our medical facilities are laying off workers. One in our state laid off 170...sad and that means the waits will get longer.

Youngest son and family are coming out today. I get to play with Miss Molly. What fun!!!

I agree---like just saying surgery went longer than expected or a medical crisis happened---they don't have to tell you all the details. But often it is because some *** medical salesman came in to show them new stuff or take them out to lunch and kept them longer than alloted time.

The irritating thing is they don't like it when they are waiting for you.

The more we put up with substandard treatment the more we will get it. What irritates me more though is that nobody bothers to tell you what the hold up is. If they'd just have the decency to say he is held up or whatever when you get there it would save you sitting there wondering what in the heck is going on. It's just good manners

A 45 minute wait is not that unusual here---sometimes we have to wait even longer---it is maddening when it happens though--I think they should have to lower the charges if a patient has to wait more than 15 minutes---and lower it at further 15---that would make them schedule better.

Went to the hospital for my brothers cardiac appointment, our appointment was for 1.00pm by 1.45pm he still hadn't turned up. I told them that we were going and to make another appointment when the doctor would show up. I got a second opinion referral from our local doctor as well today so hopefully we'll get a doctor that will at least treat you like a person.

There isn't much on the cards for my tendon except surgery, getting it done by Medicare might take too long. I'll have to see how much it would cost if I need to get it done with me paying for it. It's that or leave it with just a thread hanging on. I'm in two minds actually.

Barbara that's a great Christmas present hopefully they'll be able to get some great use from them.

We are giving 2 of our sons and DIL's preassure canners and canning cookbooks this year for Christmas.
We finished putting up the last of the limas..Peaches are all picked too so now have to wait on the rest of the fruit to ripen. Spending today working on organizing my studio again. It is going to take me some time to finish this.

I've heard that you have to wait 'till they're mushy before you eat them. I'll be in trouble if I put in anymore fruit trees, I have enough hassles covering the ones we have now and I still have to put in another apricot tree as well as the fig tree.

Received my pressure canner today from Amazon. Trouble is I'm too tired today to check it out and tomorrow I'll be at the hospital and doctors all day so it'll have to wait until Saturday before I can have a look at what I can do.

an old persimmons trees grew across the country road from us growing up. You had to wait until a freeze to eat them,..otherwise they were so puckery...

Jules at least the 2 arms match now...Seriously I hope you can get some relief without surgery.

The kinds of persimmons that they usually have in stores are the Japanese variety. Our tree is the American variety and more wild. The fruit is much much smaller than the Japanese. I do know there are a few varieties of Japanese..one is good eaten raw and other made into breads. Ours are good both ways. They have a texture of a pudding and a taste all there own. I love just eating them but the persimmon bread is great during the holidays. I still have some pulp frozen from last year. The main problem with persimmons is their seeds. You can't boil them to get them out as the fruit seems to gum up when cooked. So only way I've found to remove the seeds is by hand..squeezing them..Wildlife here love them as well as our yard dogs. I have to sneak out to the tree to get any or they beat me to them. They are bitter if picked from the tree so they have to drop when ripe to get the good ones. And when I mean bitter..they pucker your mouth. High in alum...The old tales said you had to wait until after the first frost...but that isn't true..just once they drop and are mushy then they are ready to eat.

We lost all our grapes due to late freeze one year so we planted muscadines. They are a wilder variety that grow naturally in our area. The grapes are much large and do not hang in clusters like real grapes. You pick them when they turn black and if you don't like the pips as you call it then you won't like them..but they are yummy and make a terrific jelly as well. Last year we had some left over juice from them and the apples so I combined and made muscapple jam...yummy!!

Well back to the room organizing.

I've never tasted Persimmons, must try one when they are in season. I've only got one grape vine after the other fell down with part of the plum tree. I can only use them for cooking and grape leaves as the fellas here won't eat grapes with pips in them ..... wusses!!

I'm not a happy person at the moment as I had my ultrasound today and found that I have snapped my biceps tendon. It's hanging there by a thread and the only real treatment is an operation. I've actually never had any operation before so I'm not really looking forward to it. What annoys me is that it was such a stupid accident and now I've got two crook arms

Persimmons I think are the last things to come off and also we will plant turnip greens sometime in September. Also muscadine grapes come off around the time the apples and figs.

Today is a repeat of yesterday. Shelled butter beans, clean and organize the studio some more. but going to the dentist this afternoon. I wish they would schedule us for early mornings to get it out of the way but it is at 2pm and takes a chunk out of our day. DH and I go at the same time.

Our state here (Victoria) is known as having 4 seasons in one day.

I know we've got to have the 4 seasons, I personally don't like tropical weather, too much humidity for me, but the cold seeps into my bones and shuts me down.

You are still sounding busy Barbara, is there anything after the figs and apples?

Our summer has arrived too. For us to have hot humid summers is normal and it has been much cooler and dryer here. But with the heat and humidity back we are finally getting much needed afternoon showers. Almost our entire state has been under a burn ban..now we have had 2 days of afternoon rain..a little late for the garden but so good for our grass. We never water our grass anyway as we have well and don't want to run it dry. But since we have gotten rains, the grass has come back green. It was brown and crunchy..We only have our butterbeans left. We shelled a bushel of them this morning and think we have about 2 bushels left. The last peach tree is coming off too. It will be awhile before the fig and apples come off.

Spending my time making things for the gallery change over next month. I am also trying to get my studio back in order. Staying busy inside during the heat of the day.

I don't think I'd look forward to knee surgery and the rehab that it entails after. The cortisone shot should help at least for a short time, like my bursitis. Don't you hate it when your body parts fall apart on you.

I have tried all sorts of pain killers and absolutely none help relieve the pain. I'll try an analgesic/calmative tonight and hopefully they'll help me relax a bit and go to sleep. I know I haven't torn the ligament as the muscle would have moved so I'm thinking I may have possible punctured the sac that surrounds the joint. It's a bit better today so if I keep being careful I should be OK until I see the doctor on Monday.

OUch! Ice it and take ibuprofen and keep it elevated above your heart.
Well, no surgery on my knee---I could have had a cortisone shot but since it is not having sharp pains any more I can wait---so I did---do have therapy for a month and then go back---if no real improvement I will get the shot---or if it hurts real bad can go in sooner for the shot. He did say if it locks in place or feels like it is going to collapse on me----which it did at first---then I will need surgery.

Definite bummer on not getting the job Cathy.

I am in major pain here at the moment, I was up with the crows this morning (4.00am) to pick up my brother from the sleep laboratory and I thought I opened the garage roller door, I pulled it up and it wasn't open. I have wrenched something in my elbow (made a terrible scrunching sound) and the pain is intense. I went to the doctor and he checked it out I doesn't look like I've torn my tendon, but I've definitely injured something. If it's worse tomorrow I will go and get an ultrasound. I feel like such an idiot and I hate the fact that I just can't do anything. Goodness only knows what sort of sleep I'll have tonight.

Need the grass cut here as well but the ground is way too wet at the moment, I suppose I'll have to put up with the jungle look for a while.

While the acupuncture and massage were relaxing, I think I spent too much time face down and ended up with a headache. Next time I go there I'll ask her to split the laying down up a bit.

Cathy it is well received over here even the doctors do acupuncture as well as some vets as well. It cured my tennis elbow in both arms so I'm hoping it'll help my bursitis so I don't have to have another cortisone shot.

Well, I got the grass cut---in 3 time periods---started on the weed whacking but ran out of string---but got some of the worse areas done before that. It was hot out there but had to be done---afraid the ortho doc will say not to do it so wanted it done before I went.
Also decided to get new curtains for my room and move mine to my son's old room----that room needs it but since it won't be used that much, I deserve them more---LOL

Jules that sounds so wonderful and relaxing...Reminds me I need a massage.
I've begun binding the rug and will block it hopefully today. I have to make some printed fabric labels for all 3 of the newest rugs and hopefully get 2 attached to take to the program meeting today. If not then will take at the board meeting the following week. Have some framed stitcheries I need to clean as I wanted to take them as well. So busy but restful day today.

I have the same problem with the blackberries over here, I'm always covered in scratches etc.

The end result is worth it especially when you're eating your wonderful preserves.

Had an acupuncture appointment today, it was great, she gave me a massage first and then the cupping and acupuncture, I don't think I've spent that much time horizontal except for sleeping.

We went out and picked wild blackberries this morning and got a couple of gallons, I think. I'll make jam this afternoon and might try going out a bit earlier tomorrow while the berries are still cool from the night. It makes it easier to pick them AND it's more comfortable for me too.

Barbara, glad to hear you are going to have a relaxing day. You deserve it. Backtracking a bit, it was interesting to read what you've done with dyeing wool. I've done the same and some felting - wet, needle and with a sander. The green turned out variegated and I love it.
Jules, hope you are feeling better soon!
Lecates, Congratulations! That's awesome.
I have everbearing raspberries and they have lots of prickles. My arms are showing the wounds from picking. It is too hot to put on a long sleeve shirt but I am going to have to. Today I'll continue working on the 'railway' dust (shows as rust spots) on my van. Can only work an hour a day due to the heat and to avoid tendonitis, back and neck aches.
Everyone, have a nice day! It's gorgeous here in the Okanagan of BC.

A quiet restful day today. Had my tea outside early as the sun rose. So lovely. Temps are cooler then. Now gong to spend the day hooking my rug.

Lots of rain here last night and all day today, which is great because it means no frost and not as cold.

Had an absolutely terrible night last night with an upset stomach and pains, I don't think I got to sleep until @4am. Hopefully I'll get some better sleep tonight

Well we finished putting up the peas. We planted pink eyed purple hull and black eyed. We had never planted black eyed and were really surprised at how many they made. I think both peas taste different but hubby things they taste the same. I got out early this morning and picked a gallon of blueberries. They are winding down. We picked all the reliance peaches and just waiting on the elberta peaches to ripen now. Our sugar melons (small water melons) died. Just got too hot and dry. We tried to keep them watered but it didn't help and also think part was due to where they were planted. They were in the rockiest area of our garden site.

The rest of today I'm going to spend hooking on my rug. Hubby went to neighbor's to help rake and bale hay. So I pretty well have the time today to spend on my fun things.

I've got my dehydrator ready for when I've got stuff to dry, nothing in the garden yet. Bought myself a pressure canner from Amazon last night and believe it or not even with the postage it was still cheaper than buying the exact same thing in Australia. I don't mind when people try to make a profit, but outright thieving like that is just not on.

All I have to do now is fix up my storage system here and I'll be off like a frog in a sock when the garden yields fruit.

Wow--I can't believe what Linda and Barb are accomplishing! It sounds like my place but I don't think I end up actually finishing as much as I start!

Jules, I'd take a bit of your cold too. I can't handle the heat when it gets above 95 and I don't even have the humidity that Cathy does!

DS sent over some zucchini for me to dehydrate this morning. They can't keep up with their plants, so we'll eat some and I'll start dehydrating the rest.

Barb, what kind of peas are you shelling? Blackeyes or English?

I am not one to complain of the cold as I really do hate hot and humid---I can put more on for the cold. LOL
We are getting more rain this morning---think they just said we have gotten 2 inches already this morning---definitely won't have to water my gardens for a few days.

Bummer on the leg Cathy

Barbara I'm not sure I'd like having stuffed animal heads around my place either.

Was white outside again this morning, this cold is killing my body. I'm going to the chiro tomorrow and hopefully it'll help my neck and back. I'm really hoping the acupuncture on Monday helps this bursitis.

I'm going to try out a new relish recipe with rhubarb on the weekend, hoping it'll be as good as it sounds, I have a ton of rhubarb in the garden.

Heard back from the clinic---I did tear my minincus so now I have to see ortho doc to see what they recommend. And my dh can wait 6 weeks for another ultra sound to see if swelling has gone down as doc thinks it is from the leg infection---if not gone down, then a biopsy.

Wow Linda you have been busy!!!! Lots of exercise that's for sure.

Your welcome Jules. When you have been canning for 34 years...well you get the picture. You learn by your mistakes.

Barb...I love dyeing wool. I dye old recycled wool clothing that I cut up to use for my rug hooking. I love using acid dyes and subdue my bright colors down with either tea, coffee, walnut crystals, or my favorite....onion skins. I tie the onion skins up in old panty hose and stuff it in my dye pot with my wool. I soak my wool in water mixed with tiny bit of hand dish detergent or the finish products you put in your dishwasher (not the soap as it has bleach and will melt your wool). I also dye with Koolaid and other naturals. Wool dyes better than any natural fiber. I love dyeing...,makes me feel like a mad scientist. I think I must have been one in my past lives if there were any...Strangely I collect the oddest things. I told my DH yesterday that our house looks like a laboratory of a mad scientist. We have deer head on the wall (his trophy) and then he has European mounted heads (skulls with horns) and I have bird's nests and all my woolen critters I've made over the years. We even have a European mounted bob cat head and a stuffed ground hog...I have some fake crows. So with all that sitting around along with the cobwebs I need to sweep down...well you can get the picture.

Hooking my rug today. We shelled another bushel of peas this morning. Off now to finish tracking.

Had a really busy day but outside. Took out the back fence and hauled 15 35# cement border blocks - 2 at a time in the wheelbarrow so the tree guy can get in the backyard with his bucket truck tomorrow to cut down 5 old trees. Then had to take a bunch of stuff from the backyard to the garage so it wouldn't get hit by falling branches. Then had to dig out a 15 ft perennial bed and set those plants somewhere else until I figure where they will find a new permanent home. Threw lots of things in the dumpsters as tomorrow-well, about 5 hours from now, is garbage man day! I have set my alarm for 5:30 which will not be much sleep but still have some things to get done before he gets here. Have to clear a path to the electrical box on the back porch so I can disconnect the power line that runs to the garage.

I took a break to make nice chicken walnut salads for my mom and myself and eat during Jeopardy! She reminded me I was supposed to take cheese balls and baby powder to my friend's Mom in the nursing home so ran up and did that. I told my mom I'd take her for a root beer float because I had coupons. Well, the coupons had expired and I refuse to pay $2.49 for anything to drink so got one for her and then stopped in and got a large coffee for me! See, God is watching out for me because I didn't need the calories. Gained a pound last week so need to be watching more carefully.

Finished up what I could still see and was so proud of myself for all the things that went to the dumpster by 11:15 p.m. and came in and changed my shirt and ran to Subway for a half tuna sand. Got another coffee and came home and soaked in an Epsom salt tub and then ate my sandwich and logged in here before bed. Know I'll be working outside most of the day again tomorrow. Good physical labor and lots of sweating as we've had unusual rains and now with the heat it's very humid. Have a great hump day everyone!

Vonblackbird, I can't believe how much you accomplish!

Help - my everbearing raspberry canes are growing too tall! The new canes are growing now and I can't reach all the berries on the existing canes. Do you just cut the top of the new canes off? How much? what form do they grow into after? I did trim the existing canes last fall but I guess I left them still too tall. My maximum reach is about 6' 4".

I've been dyeing skeins of natural wool with acid dyes. It's been a learning experience. The 'sunny Yellow' was too bright so today I overdyed it with a mix of Royal Blue and Turquoise Blue (leftover dyes from last year's guild projects. Interesting results.

We used to have 9 blueberry bushes and it was a lot of work keeping up with them during picking time. It takes about an hour to pick one gallon of blueberries. And you could get a gallon off each bush the size we have. We have had ours for years. Year before last the intense heat we had that summer killed a few of the bushes. We keep the watered so it wasn't they needed water but it was the air heat. We had 3 months of 100F actual temps. Same happened last summer. So now we are down to 4 bushes. One is young and small and this was the first year it really yielded well. It is about 4 years old. We started it from a cutting off one of the other bushes. These 4 sit more in the afternoon shade so think that is why they lived through those 2 hot summers. We prune them back after the fruit is off and then we let the new growth appear as that is where much of the blooming and fruiting occurs. Ours are a southern rabbit eye variety and the berries are much bigger than the northern high bush kind.

We have wild black berry bushes all up and down our road but this year they didn't produce well. Our peaches have begun to ripen. The Elberta peach will be the last to come off. Right now it is just the reliance peach.

The gardening has slacked up some. We picked a bushel of peas yesterday and we always wait a day to shell as it seems the hulls loosen better for easier shelling. We just set the baskets in the house under the a/c. So this morning we shelled what we picked yesterday. Have them on blanching now and then into the freezer. We shelled a bushel and half yesterday and also put up 15 quarts of bread and butter pickles. Have started a new hooked rug too.

2 gallons of berries,WOW! I only have gotten 2 cups of raspberries so far. I only have a small plot 6x6. I should get 5-6 cups. No blackberries yet emoticon or blueberries. I just planted the blueberry bushes this spring. Should see some next year. emoticon

I've never had luck trying to grow tomatoes or peppers from seed so always buy the plants. We don't like egg plant so no problem there.

Yesterday was another busy day. Picked 2 gallons of blueberries to start the day while hubby picked peas. Then we put up 25 quarts of pickled bean salad and then spent the rest of the day shelling the peas. I had a cut on my thumb and shelling the peas made it turn into a big sore. So today we aren't shelling peas to give our thumbs a rest. But did get out and picked another 2 gallons of berries. Hubby picked a half bushel of peas so guess he will be shelling them today. He also had to go out to DILs as their big yard dog died and he had to haul it here to bury before the DGDs got up and saw her. The heat and humidity is back so going to spend the afternoon hooking a new rug under the a/c.

My kohlrabi, marjoram and chamomile seeds have already sprouted, still waiting on the pepper, eggplant, cumin and tomatillos. I am not actually expecting the eggplant to sprout, they never did on my previous attempts either. I must have gotten an old batch of seeds; I finally gave up and bought a plant.

I've seen rugs with cows or crows or rabbits done in the patriotic style so decided on doing this pig. The pattern was in one of my magazines and I usually design my own so this was totally different for me. I used the pig which had a star on it and then instead of doing the swirls I so love doing in my work and is my trademark, I did this one in straight lines. So the pig is the stripes of the USA flag and blue background like the field our stars are in on the flag and the stars and corners are yellow. where the stars on the American flag are white. I usually like more subdued colors as well. Also my state of Arkansas University mascot is a razorback. I went to high school in Texarkana, Arkansas and our mascot was a Razorback before the University took it as theirs and now the University supports my old high school athletic program and they donate my old high school their old equipment. Also my sons are avid Razorback fans so probably one of them will claim this rug.
Well back to the picking and putting up. Just took a short break.

Well she asked so politely and you know grandma's can't resist their grandkids. So just had to help her fill her little basket. And she did say thank you every time I put berries in her bucket. But she followed me around like a little puppy dog. She is the youngest grand and won't have anymore grands but now oldest are getting old enough to marry and then will have great grands.

Well we have a total of 6 bushels of pinto beans. Have shelled all but 2 bushels. Tomorrow one of the DIL's comes out to pick blueberries. Sister and her husband came yesterday and so I won't have to pick again until Monday or Tuesday. We plan to can up our pickled bean salad this weekend. and then start picking peas. Peaches have started so the war is on against the squirrels. They have begun to rob the trees. It wouldn't be so bad but they knock off as many as they eat. They make take a bite out of one and drop it and go to another so they can wipe out a tree in a day. One year the deer broke down some of our fruit trees trying to get the ones towards the top. But don't think we have as many deer anymore. At least the bears have not shown up to eat our blueberries.

I have finished my patriotic pig rug...hope to get photos up soon. emoticon

No way. Had Miss Molly on Sunday and she is 4 and followed me around asking Mamaw this and Mamaw that. Her mom and I were trying to pick blueberries and she had her little basket and she would come up and tell me that her basket needed some blueberries..so I would put some in her basket and she always said "thank you Mamaw"...how can you resist that. She picked a few but most of the time she followed me for me to pick them for her. But they are raising her to eat lots of veggies and fruit so that is good...Then put up 47 pints of salsa on Monday. Had to drive the 6 hours to get our truck that had broken down last weekend. Then made more salsa yesterday. We wound up with 95 pints. In between, we have shelled 3 bushels of pinto beans and have another 2 to go and then the pea shelling begins..Peaches are almost ripe too. Blueberries have to be picked every other day so other DIL is supposed to come on Saturday to pick. My sister and her husband came out today to pick. I usually pick a full gallon and they pick about half a gallon as my sister eats as many as she picks. And then I pick fast. But it takes about an hour to pick one gallons. But the chores are finished today so going to try to finish binding my rug and then block it. Will have pictures up soon. emoticon

It's a pity you don't have a friend there for her along with a twister mat, that'll burn out over energetic bodies

Sounds like something might have had a nibble on a couple of them. Very disappointing when you go to all the trouble and poof there they go.

I think it was either too much water from all of the rain and/or birds or bugs ate them. Some pots have dead seedlings and some pots are just empty.

Fang, bummer---no one water them?
We are having lots of rain here---the good thing is I don't have to water my gardens,--the bad thing is that my grass is going to be a mile high when I ever get to cut it!

Well bummer on the plants Fang, wonder what happened to them?

Started on the falling plum tree today, but by the time I got through the blackberries and the grape vines I was to tired to pull out the chainsaw. Will have to finish Friday, grocery shopping tomorrow and the dentist on Thursday (oh joy).

We are FINALLY getting summer weather here. Literally overnight it has gone from the nomal high 50s with rain yo sunny in the high 70s. This weekend we are supposed to be in the 80s.

About time!

On a sad note, when I got back from vacation last week I found that most of my seedlings either died or somehow disappeared from their pots. I had transplanted them right before I left, they were all on the verge of crossing from seedling to"real" plants. So I am going to try starting the seeds for the 5th time this year and hope for the best.

Happy July! It's been a long day at work and now I get to go home and mow the yard! Yay me! emoticon

Here's the new July thread and on time again emoticon

To continue on from June IMAREADER tomatoes are probably the easiest fruit to can, all you need is the tomatoes, some tomato juice and lemon juice if you are worried about the acid in the tomatoes and off you go.

Had the guys out today to check on the AC/heater that kept popping its circuit breaker. They put a 25W instead of a 20W breaker so hopefully now it won't drop out so often.
