I had acupuncture for sinus infections once and it worked. Haven't had a bad one since. Think we probably need to go to July chat area. Seems I'm chatting in both places. To answer your question on pressure canning. The normal canning jars work well just make sure your lids are new. I reuse my rings but always buy new lids. I also have pressure canned in other jars that the lids and rings fit...like mayonaise jars. But they are thinner glass so make sure you keep in pot of hot water before filling and then start them on slow heat in canner and build up. I do that with all my jars. I save my jars from year to year and reuse. Really canning in jars saves the environment as not as much cans and paper waste goes into the land fills. And if jars break or rims chip, I break them in smaller pieces so they will eventually revert to sand again. I hate the plastic bags that most markets have gone to. Paper is biodegradeable and renewable. Where plastic is petrolium based and takes forever to degrade in land fills. I also like reusing my paper sacks for lots of other uses. I've thought to try to crochet the plastic ones into a rug or something. Just hate them. Ok lets take the discussion to July chat.

Sitting under the AC sounds like a plan, especially when the weather is as hot as it is over there.

I also took it easier today, made some sausage rolls for dinner and some roasted pumpkin soup for dinner tomorrow night so I've got something to eat after I get home from grocery shopping.

I found a acupuncturist not too far up the road that I'm going to see next Monday, hopefully it'll calm down the bursitis in my shoulder. It did wonders for the tennis elbow that I had in both elbows so I'm hoping it'll do the job here.

Just a question for you, do you need special jars for pressure canning or will normal canning jars do the job? I saw a pressure canner on Amazon that I liked the look of but I'm not buying it until I know what I need to use it.

I like the seasons too but it seems sometimes that spring and autumn are just too short/
Well taking a somewhat rest today from the garden work. I did get out early before the heat got up and picked 2 gallons of blueberries and we do plan to put up some bread and butter pickles today but giving our shelling thumbs a rest on the peas. Going to sit under the a/c the rest of the day and hook or stitch.

Will got over and have a look Barbara.

I love the heat as well, but I do like the seasons as long as they don't go overboard one way or the other.

What can I say we're never happy with the weather are we?

Jules I feel for you as I can hardly stand our cold wet winters we have. Makes me ache clear through. I am loving the heat we are having. But really it is not bad humidity though it was a little more today than it has been. We got up early and while I picked 2 gallons of blueberries, DH picked 2 bushels of peas. We spent the rest of the day shelling and I washed bed linens and bathed the dog as well. We also put up 25 quarts of our bean salad mix. I did put picture on my blog today. Off to an early bath and bed.

Barbara I'd love a bit of your heat here at the moment. It's frosty and cold here and I hate the cold weather.

Feeling a bit poorly today, don't ask me why, but I'll take it easy just in case.

One of the DIL's was to show up early this morning to pick blueberries and she didn't show so I picked about a gallon and a half and then we shelled the rest of the beans we had picked yesterday. We found out last year if you pick one day and let it sit under the a/c that the next day they shell easier. Now we will begin picking blackeyed and purple hull peas. We will also be soaking some dried black and red kidney beans we bought to add to our bean salad mix. It will give it color. Couldn't find dried chick peas (garbanza beans) to add so we will skip them. I'm gong to spend the heat of the day hooking on a new rug.

Sounds like a major busy day Barbara. I did a bit of preserving but not as much as you. Bottled a double batch of my Red Onion Relish, worked out a recipe for Peppered Mushrooms, bottled some Rhubarb and Apples and some Lemon Butter.

I'm tired now so you must have had it.

Well I have put up 95 pints of salsa. We have picked 6 bushels of pinto beans and shelled 4 of them and blanched and put in freezer. I myself have picked 5 gallons of blueberries. Hubby has picked 2 and had relatives come who have picked 4. Still about 8 more gallons left on the bushes. Tomorrow we get things prepared to make the pickled bean salad and will make it on Sunday. And then blackeyed and purple hull peas start coming off as well as peaches. Then later on this summer we have figs, apples, persimmons and muscadine grapes to harvest and put up. Busy busy time around the place but when I would take a break and rest, I kept my hands busy and finished a new rug.

Lots happening here as well, I'm hoping to do some more preserving on the weekend, more onion relish and some peppered mushrooms. At least I'll have all of my stove burners working, I have the electrician coming tomorrow to fit a new switch. Will be watching closely so I can do the same if another switch goes bung.

Happy July the 4th to everyone emoticon emoticon

Thanks, Jules! I'll make sure I get the air out. I've always been afraid to can anything for fear I would poison people by doing it wrong! Maybe one day I'll take the plunge.

I've had roasted okra pods with my dinner two nights in a row and even though it's late, I'm going to fix a little green salad since I'm still low on my calories for the day.

Wow at the stuff people are doing right now. We had a nightmare weekend and now the "fun" begins. Salsa making and purple hull peas and pintos to shell...busy busy time right now. Going to blog about our weekend....

If you are careful about expelling all the air from your freezer bags, the tomatoes should be fine. Keep an eye on how long you store them as the quality will diminish with age. It shouldn't make any difference to whether you can use them or not just the look may not be the same. Failing that can you bottle/can them? You just need the bottles and a pot to bring them to the boil in.

You guys are so busy and active! I've got to get off the stick and get to work! I managed to lose three pounds this week in spite of not exercising. Not officially exercising, that is. I worked to get my department and office at work straightened up and neat, which involved a lot of climbing the stepstool, bending and pushing carts around. I guess that was enough activity to help me along. I need to mow the yard, but it's gloomy outside and rain is supposed to be on the way. I see my neighbor is having her yard mowed, but the guy mowing is using a riding mower and is just zooming along. My push mower (although it helps me burn calories) is much slower. Maybe tomorrow.

I went to visit my dad yesterday and he loaded me up with fresh veggies. And I mean loaded--my fridge and laundry room are swamped with tomatoes, yellow squash, okra, cucumbers, green peppers and a bag of peas I need to shell (I think they are called 'pink lady'. Kind of like black-eyed peas, but pinkish). It's a good problem to have, though. My dinner last night was two tomato sandwiches. There's nothing like a good homegrown tomato. I do have a question, though. I want to put up some tomatoes in the freezer like my mom used to do. She's no longer here for me to ask, and I used up the last of what she had put up a few months ago. I think that she just peeled the tomatoes, took out the stem end, pureed them with a stick blender and then froze the pulp (double-bagged in quart bags). Does that sound right? I'm pretty sure she didn't cook the pulp or anything. When I made veggie soup, I would just take a bag out of the freezer and dump it into the soup. It was great!

Morning..it is 64 here right now but the sun has not come out yet...everything is wet...guess I will have to do housework this morning until the sun dries everything out. I slept 8.5 hours...still have symptoms of the vertigo with me. My fbs was 124. Check out the photos of what is blooming in my garden right now.

Have you been watching Labyrinth???

I was most disgusted yesterday, I pulled the stove back off to replace one of the hotplate switches and found they had changed them AGAIN and now I need the electrician to install it.

I'm going to be watching over his shoulder to see what he does so I know what to do next time I need to replace it.

evening everyone,
we just came in from burning off more brambles, dead rose canes, pine branches, etc.
remember when i said i went wheat free and didn't have vertigo anymore? well, yesterday while on our trip i was...as my grandson says...glutened! the only thing i had that could of been a problem was some fries with a hamburger without bun, lettuce & tomato at a restaurant. i asked ahead of time and they said no wheat in the fries...i told dh they appeared like they might have wheat...i.e. some people dust the fries in flour to make them crisp. but i was assured no wheat...and since then headache and some vertigo. i surely hope this doesn't last because i have glorious weather to work in my gardens and i need to look down without a problem...it started as i was at the computer...so hoping it is working itself out of my system

I was wrestling with my son several weeks ago and heard my knee pop and getting up was super painful - so much for showing him how I could keep up with him. "I can't" So, after many weeks of doing different exercises to build my knee up again, I'm finally back to walking more but I'm afraid to do planks or jumping jacks.
emoticon
emoticon
The good news is I'm back to doing my extra walking outside and on dvds again - I had to go super slow the past few weeks and not do anything extra that involved knee bends - couldn't even get off the floor properly. However, I was able to lift weights and do situps/leg lifts like you do for yoga. emoticon

I wish we had a Y near us - I'd love to go swimming - it's the best exercises for us "older" folks. emoticon

Appreciate your feet and legs Everyone!

I'm trying to think ahead and thinking I may want to make some planter boxes to put in our big sunroom and try to grow lettuce and carrots this winter.I have to mull it over in my mind awhile and may just go with the cold frame thing. We have a lot of old windows I could use for that.

got out early this morning and picked 2 gallons of blueberries. We will be gone tomorrow morning early to go visit SIL down south part of our state. We will go to the tomato shed and pick up several lugs to have to make salsa. We plan on coming back on Saturday and go through the city and to Sam's to pick up a big bag of onion and a few peppers. Sunday we will work on the salsa and then my sister is supposed to come out early on Monday to pick blueberries..Busy weekend ahead.

When we had tomatoes in the cherry tomatoes kept us going for ages until the other varieties came in.

Thank goodness it looks like the frost might disappear for a few days, talk about knock the stuffing out of the garden. Most of the veggies have been fine, the Kohl Rabi and Cabages haven't even looked back.

I'm hoping for some rain here, goodness knows the place could do with some as well as topping up the rainwater tanks.

We had so much rain earlier that I did not need to water---although I have gone out and watered the veggies and the potted plants several times, but I do plant a lot of plants that don't require a lot of water----vinca and zinnias are pretty hardy.

Jules hope you get to feeling better soon. I totally understand the cold weather and the back issues.

Wow Cathy...hope your plants produce well. We got a bowlful of cherry tomatoes yesterday and we finished the green bean picking and brining. The pickles will be an ongoing process until the vines die. We have been watering our garden for some time now. It really makes a difference.

Well back off here to get back out to the garden chores.

Don't you love it when things just pop up out of nowhere, it's like picking up a couple of dollars off the ground. Those plants usually end up being really resilient.

Hot and horrid here! and no rain---had to water all my plants yesterday but found a cucumber and a tomato growing---woohoo!
Jules, weather does play a big part in the aches and pain. Hope it is a better day today.
Going with dh to the doctor this morning but we will probably stay inside this afternoon---just too hot to do anything that we need to do outside. Bummer!

My back is also acting up (as usual) but it's the cold that's killing me. I hate this frosty weather.

Barb I'll have to go over and have a look at your rug blog.

Busy day. Picked 2 gallons of blueberries. (it takes me an hour a gallon) and then washed and snapped 3 gallons of green beans. Hubby brined them. We work as a team. Then he packed 6 quart jars with small cucumbers and then I mixed the brine for kosher dill pickles. I use Mrs. Wages mix but add a teaspoon more dill seed and a couple of clove of garlics to each jar. Now have a pot ready to cook some green beans and new potatoes for lunch. Back is hurting but will sit this afternoon inside away from the heat and hook some.

I finished my whimsy sheep rug. Blogged about it.

That salsa sounds great Barb, I was thinking of doing a batch of Pineapple or Mango Salsa to preserve.

Cathy good on you for having a rest, I've been one big ache and pain here today. Does anyone here have those days where everything aches for no reason then the next day all is fine?

Cathy we only have 4 rabbit eye blueberries. They are a southern variety and the berries are huge. We had 10 bushes but the drought and summer heat we had last 3 summers killed all but these 4. They are more shaded by the trees so think that helps in the heat of summer. The birds loved our plums and also wiped out our cherries this year. We did manage to pick 2 gallons of cherries but could have had 3 times that many. Spiders in our blueberries don't bother me that much. They really get alot of granddaddy long legs but really they eat the worms that sometimes try to get in the bushes. But I'm more amazed at our fig tree than anything. We had that late cold snap and killed the leaves and first figs that came on but now it has more figs on it than I've ever seen. Just amazing.

As for giving away veggies Jules, we only give away once we have what we want frozen or canned or dried and then we give the excess away. we just don't want it to ruin if we can't use it. But our garden is really big and not the raised bed kind. We have our planted in rows and wide enough apart to keep the middles tilled up to a certain point. When the beans grow down into themselves the tilling is over but then no grass can grow with the shade they make. And as big as our garden is, it is half the size it used to be. And we are thinking of downsizing it more next year. And we planted 42 tomato plants thinking to restock our salsa this year. Well the rains we had a month ago drowned all but 16 plants and that is not enough to make salsa from so why we plan to drive down to the southern half of our state and buy some from the commercial tomato growers down there. Our state is known for the Bradley tomato which is a pink color instead of the deep reds.

Well about finished with the hooking part of my rug. Working on it under the a/c during the heat of the day.

Darn birds! We used to live near a pick your own blueberry field---man, I hated the purple poop on my cars. And those bushes really attracted spiders so we always had a lot of them as the wind would carry them over our way.
Rested my knee yesterday and it is feeling better but going easy on it today.
Have a good day!

I'd prefer my veggies fresh or frozen to Barb but there's a limit to what I can put in the freezer unless I buy another freezer.

I don't mind canned peas and beans etc so I think the pressure canner might be a good idea. I don't mind giving some of my produce away but if I'm just growing to give away I may as well not bother. I've been making sure that each raised bed has a small variety of different plants, that way I won't have a pile of one veggie.

I know how you feel with the birds and the fruit trees, it's a running battle here with the parrots and the black jays.

I have used a pressure canner for years. Get the big big one that will fit quart jars. Love mine. I have 2 smaller pressure cookers and use them often. But to really can veggies like green beans etc you need the pressure canner. Personally we don't like green beans that much. We like them fresh from the garden and then in winter we like them pickled. I've tried drying and freezing them but don't like the texture either gives.

And Cathy yes the burgundy beans taste wonderful and much more tenter. than the green kind. In fact we like eating them fresh better than the green ones. We tried blue lake green beans this year and much better than kentucky wonders.

Hubby and I have had a garden and canned and frozen and dried our produce now for 33 years. But now we plant and grow and put up only those things we really like. No sense wasting garden space and energy growing things you know you won't eat.

We got our first half gallon of blueberries this morning. In a few days we will be picking about 3-4gallons a day. But seems the birds are in numbers this year and they have been getting in the bushes so may have a time of it this year with them. We have over abundance of mockingbirds and brown thrush. And noticed the scarlet tangers like the berries and fruit too.

Mainly enjoying my Sunday hooking on my rug.

I've got nothing to pick in the garden at the moment except Swiss Chard and Turnip Greens.

The frosts here the past week have played havoc with my potted plants, most have stood up to them but my Aoneums are looking really droopy. I know they will come back but I hate to see them distressed like that.

I bought myself a dehydrator so anything that I can't freeze I might try my hand at drying. I have been thinking of buying a pressure canner, I have an ordinary canner but it won't do vegetables etc so I'll have to think about whether I need one or not.

Have you considered freezing them whole and using for soups, chili, and sauces...you will get the fresh taste that way in winter.

I also agree about the wind turbines. I don't think the vibrations would be that bad except maybe for wildlife but then the big power lines that go across country as supposed to cause cancer as well. Think wind would be much safer. As well as solar. If they would ever get the prices right on both of them, I could see more and more people getting them.

No tomatoes here. We live on the cold side of the mountain but everything else is coming along nicely. We have picked and brined all our burgundy green beans and will be picking the green green beans soon. Squash and cucumbers are coming in by the numbers too. Okra is blooming.

Humidity is here as well. But enjoying my early morning hours sitting with DH him drinking coffee and me tea. It is "our" time together and really enjoy it.

We can't seem to have the heat without the humidity around here---it's moving back in to my area starting tomorrow---darn it! We know a couple of farmers who each have one on their farms. Should ask dh to see if that is a problem when there is just the one---and they are big ones---think it runs the power for their farms--they raise chickens as part of their farms and they can take a lot of power. We don't seem to have the technology for that here for it to be affordable for the normal people. Seems to be more advanced down under than here.

I'll take the 90 degree heat over here, you can keep the humidity though. I'm tired of these major frosty mornings over here, too cold for me.

I think the biggest problems with the big wind turbines is the vibration, apparently it has some health problems with people living close by. You can get some really good small ones that you can put on the house or garage if the local ordinances allow you. Cathy it makes perfect sense to me as well if you have access to an abundance of sun or wind to take advantage of it. Imagine what it'd be like if we all had access to renewable energy like this?

Everytime I slice into a hydroponic truss tomato now I miss my own tomatoes. It doesn't seem to matter how they grow them, tomatoes in Winter just seem to have very little flavour and skins like bullet proof vests!!

We had torrential storms last night which meant Cuddles visited us and we were awake from 2-4 AM. Everything is saturated so no work in the gardens right now...besides the heat has gotten to both of us and our systems are out of order. So inside things for today as another above 90F day with high humidity!

No ripe tomatoes here. Only our cherry tomatoes will ripen early--the bigger ones seem to wait all summer :(

Jules, I think both solar and wind power make soooo much sense---and it seems like the wind has really picked up around here---I don't remember as much in the past---and people around here fight against the wind turbines---I don't think they are a blight---seen some wind farms and really, they look better than all the power lines stretching forever and ever over the land.
Woohoo to the early tomatoes!

Kathy are you getting tomatoes already? Ours are still growing and have green ones but no ripe ones yet.

Jules you are lucky if you want to get off the grid. I would love it if we could.

Love the new camera. Took a good shot of a scarlet tanger at the top of the tree yesterday. Very pleased with it so far.

Don't get my brother started he's talking about upgrading to a hybrid system. It's one that allows you to be virtually off the grid with battery back up but with the benefit of being able to draw from the grid if anything happens. I won't even talk about wind power, he's turning into a Greenie with a capital G

Chris is does get cold here in the mountains where we are in Winter. It was @ -10C which is @10 degrees F, cold enough for me because the skies get very clear and the air is freezing.

I'd gladly have the hot weather back, I just can't get moving in the cold, I've had a crook back for the last few days that I'm sure is because of the cold.

I think I'll have to make a batch of soup, that always seems to "warm the cockles" in the cold weather.

I get very few bills thank goodness, I haven't had a electricity one since we put the solar panels in and all there are after that are internet & phone, pay TV, a small fee for water diversion and the council rates.

All of us are so busy around our places it sounds like..Jules sorry about the cold weather. I feel for you. I love my heat we are having now. Makes the poor old joints feel a lot better.

Well had our bout in the city yesterday and surprisingly I wasn't as pooped as I thought I would be after being so sick. Got some mouth and nose sores from the commode hugging but they will pass and the insides feel so much better. But so excited. My old Canon camera which was a sure shot type digital but was old had died a week ago..so got a brand new Canon. DH didn't mind me spending a pretty penny on it either not after he got his turning radius mower. I'm so thrilled with this new camera. I has 40X zoom lens but is fully automatic. Now I have to learn how to use the thing. I did take one photo of our little dog and other camera with flash made her eyes always look spooky..but didn't use the flash and it take terrific pictures in lowlight..So going to take it with me on my walk today and see what close up photos I can take.

Been bill paying today. Got one of my online bill paying things working again. They had changed up their site last year and messed me up and wouldn't let me access it...and we weren't getting paper bills so were just guessing at it and going to one of their local offices in town to pay every month. So relieved to get that taken care of. Hooking on the new rug is going well. Got to keep hooking with all that wool I have now. Well off to finish tracking and get a walk in.

Feels fabulous here this morning---love these cooler temps---wish they would stay around---LOL--my porch is all nice and clean and got rid of one piece of furniture out there so more space---cats are loving the fact that the front door is open and that they can be out there.

Good Morning Team! emoticon
The heat has arrived and rain expected emoticon so that limits my time in the garden.
In the garden for 3 hours so far today
1. I have so many day-lilies to move. and
2. My hostas that are under the apricot tree. we are re arranging some of my beds so it is easier to mow. The hostas will go in the windbreak by the fairy house i plan to do.
3. I have lilacs to move to continue the row in front of the windbreak, south side as I add rhodos to the north side.
4. Also adding lilacs along one side of my vegetable garden
5. Making a fence around my blueberries
6. Re-doing the garden fence
etc. etc. keeping busy and I have tons of pruning deadwood and those rascally brambles to pull so I am keeping busy emoticon

Good to hear you are feeling better Barb.

Bitterly cold here this morning, you'd have thought it had snowed last night, that was how thick and white the frost was. It's even colder tonight, so we'll have crispy grass again tomorrow morning.

Peace and long life - Jules

Just emptied my front porch and swept and washed the floor out there---then to bring back the stuff but going to wipe them all down before they come back in---also got rid of one of the pieces of furniture--going to my son's house-----I have seen a bench I want for it at Walmart--think it would be used more than the chaise was---the cats really clawed it a lot and made quite a mess with it.

I'm glad you're feeling more human today, Barbara. I hope you're able to get out and about a little bit and get moving. I need to do that too. We're watering up at DD's house while they're on vacation, so I can get my walking done then.

Well I'm feeling much better today. I think it was due to me trying to get off Prilosec and my tummy rebelled. Hubby thought it was food poisoning but he ate the same thing I ate. But got a good night's sleep and feel so so much better.

Hubby got new turning radius mower. Our 3 year old one has been in the shop 4 times and still would not run. A lemon I guess. I told him before he got new mower to get a good one this time and pay a little more for it as the cheaper ones break down sooner and don't last but only so long..think it is manufacturers way to get you buying new more often. But this is Xmark and Badboy makes them and was quite expensive but think it might be worth it in the long run. But we do have an old Sears mower that is almost 20 years old and still runs like a top..so never know..

Going to the city in a little while if I feel up to it..Got to get to moving some. I'm so stiff from not moving for 3 days. Still hooking a new rug.

Barbara, hope you feel better.
Just put a coat over the nightie and you will be okay---that is a bummer.
Lots of rain yesterday but my kind of rain---it brought some lovely cooler weather with it so the ac is off and I am enjoying the fresh air coming in the house. Have a good day!

I'm assuming we're talking about the succulents hen & chicks? I must admit a love affair for succulents. I just love Aeoniums and have lots of them around the yard.

Very cold this morning everything was white, must have frightened the AC/Heater as it popped its' circuit breaker @ 5am. Had to run outside and reset the stupid thing, dressed only in a nightie.
