I want to apologize to all of you for my negative post the other day. I have some gripes with NASCAR, but that is not really anything new for me and after my last post I began to feel bad about dumping them all out on the members of this group. I'm glad that the Daytona race was such a good one and I really wish that I had watched more of it. I'm probably not going to go out of my way to watch any races this year except for the ones at my favorite tracks, but I do hope that the rest of the races this year are really good ones like this one was. And you never know...now that I've realized I've got a couple of drivers to cheer for, I may just find the races exciting again at some point. Anyway, I hope that everyone enjoys the new season.

There was much rejoicing!

Sounds like it really was an exciting race, but I really didn't watch much of it. I've got Trevor Bayne to cheer for because he's a fellow MS sufferer and won his first race, which was the Daytona 500. Guess I'll have to try to get over the fact that he's driving for Roush and driving with Mark Martin's old team. I've also got Chase Elliot to cheer for because he's taking over driving for Jeff's team. Maybe one of them will get me interested again, maybe not.

But watching some of the coverage yesterday reminded me of the big reason why I've sort of given up on NASCAR, which is that our reigning champion is only the champion because NASCAR changed the rules just for him. He only raced half the season last year, for goodness sake! What driver has ever raced only half a season, due to injuries or any other reason, and been handed a special package of rules designed specifically to hand him a championship he didn't really earn? I'm sorry, but that's how I feel about it. I like Kyle Busch and one day may be he'll actually earn a championship, but he did not earn the one he now holds. Yes, I'm a little bitter about the fact that this was the second championship that NASCAR stole from Jeff by changing the rules on him. Hope it doesn't show too much...

Anyway, I kind of wish I'd been able to watch more of yesterday's race because it was apparently pretty exciting and had a super close finish. Maybe I'll manage to watch some other races this season, guess we'll see...

There was much rejoicing!

All evidence is that Chase Elliott is going to be a great driver although only time will tell whether he'll be as good as Awesome Bill or the guy who used to drive that 24 car he's taken over. Too bad he went out early in the race but he'll have lots more chances to prove himself before Homestead next fall. Meanwhile, it was one of the closest and most exciting Daytona 500s I've seen in many years.

It was a good race yesterday! Hamlin won but wow! Was it close? I like the new driver chase his dad was a good driver too at one time! Chase just need the time to become a good driver too. One thing about the race always new blood coming and going and that what makes a good car race worth watching!

Guess former Gordon fans are going to have to find another number to support for this race. Chase just put the 24 into the grass. At least he can claim his first pole.

That's my problem, too, don't know who I want to cheer for, which makes it hard to feel motivated to get up on a Sunday morning to watch races this year. Maybe I'll cheer for Junior, maybe not. Guess I'll just have to see if someone jumps out at me as my new driver...if I even manage to wake up and watch the race tomorrow...

I would kind of like to see how Jeff does as a commentator, so maybe...

Good race Sunday? Fast, wrecks, and one of those races did not know who was going to win?
I like the wrecks! I do not want anyone to get hurt but going around and around to me is boring.
I like to watch it more when there was dirt tracks, and not so many rules but it is a whole safer now with the newer equipment and wear for the drivers.

I'll probably watch some of the races, but probably not as religiously as I always have in the past. I actually started sort of falling off over the last couple of years. I've watched at least part of every race, but I haven't worried about whether or not I fell asleep in the middle or missed the start of some of them. And I really haven't yet found a driver that I feel anywhere near as much dedication to as I have always felt for Jeff. I guess I'll just have to wait and see how things go for me next year...

I guess part of it will depend on what NASCAR decides to do with the rules and changes to the cars for next year. Sometimes they make some really bonehead moves.

I do like Trevor Bayne. He won the Daytona 500 his first time out and then he had to take a lot of that year off because he was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. As a fellow MS patient I find it inspirational that someone with MS can still race in the top NASCAR series so sometimes I root for him. But now that Jeff has retired I probably won't work nearly as hard at being awake and unoccupied on race days next year. I guess I won't really know how much I'll follow things until the season starts at Daytona in February...

It was a pretty good race, at least what I saw of it. I didn't sleep much on Saturday night and fell asleep in the middle of the race. I woke up and watched the last 25 laps or so. I'm not at all surprised that Kyle Busch won the race but I have to say that the fact that a driver who didn't even run a full third of the season was able to win the championship shows just how big a joke NASCAR has become. They don't need a playoff scheme like the NFL and NBA have, they just need to pick a set of rules and then stick to them. Unless that happens, there's really not much point in crowning a champion every year because the championship obviously doesn't mean anything anymore. I'm not going to feel at all bad about no longer making an effort to watch the races on Sundays now that Gordon has retired if the whole thing is going to be this big of a joke in the future.

There was much rejoicing!

I had a feeling it was going to take a win yesterday to wrap up the Cup. I've never been a big fan of Kyle's - don't have much patience for these whiny, spoiled, "I'm the greatest and you should love me" young racers - but he's done a lot of growing up the last year or two. I don't know it was the injury this year or Sam and the baby, but he's changed and I think he'll make a great champion over the next year.
I'm always sad to see another NASCAR season over but it's just about exactly 3 months till Daytona. I'm sure I can hang on that long. emoticon
So what is everybody else going to watch till February? I"ve got the Grey Cup (CFL championship) next weekend, the NHL classic in January, and I'm sure I can find an NFL game or two to fill my weekends now that it's coming down to the wire there.

Who would have thought they'd have that much rain in Phoenix.
I 'm not a Kyle Bush fan, but I have to ask who else out there could have done what he's done. After the accident he had at Daytona everybody figured he was done for this season, but he just didn't give up and he's gone out and placed top 5 race after race to put himself in a place where he could win this weekend. I don't think anybody else racing today could have pulled it off.
Remember, Tony broke his leg 2 years ago and he's never been the same since.
As to who will win the cup this weekend, I have to honestly say I wouldn't be disappointed to see any of them win, but I hope they win it by winning the race. If the pattern they've set in most of the chase races this season holds, you have to figure they're all going to be top 10, so hopefully the best man will end up in victory lane to collect both trophies.

I certainly hope that Jeff will win the championship this year, that would be a great way to end his career, but I guess that any of those 4 drivers could win. Whichever one of the 4 has the best finish at Homestead will be the champion. I think it really points out what a joke the whole Chase baloney is that Kyle Busch, who missed something like a third of the races this year was in the Chase to begin with, and now could possibly become the champion this year...when he didn't even race in about a third of this year's races!

Okay, down off my soap box now. I tried to watch the race this weekend but I fell asleep in the middle of it. I'd been up really late the night before but I got up to try to watch the race at the time it was supposed to start. Then when it finally did start 6 hours later I watched the start of the race but fell asleep in the middle of it. I woke up in time to watch a little bit before the red flag came out because of more rain. They really should start running more races out in my part of the country where it never rains. There would be much less disappointment due to rain shortened races if they did that...

Anyway, I guess we'll see how things go on Sunday at Homestead. Hopefully it will be a good race with no rain.

There was much rejoicing!

Earnhardt won! Good job..now the final four: Kevin Harvich,Jeff Gordon, Kyle Busch, and Martin Truex Jr. This race did not see on the tv due to rain out! Hope next week at Homestead it does not rain...cause it will be an exciting one for sure! The winner of the chase will be Jeff Gordon what a way to end his career in racing? Not in the chase but could win the race itself going to say Johnson?

OK. The chase rules require a PhD in statistics to really understand I think but as I understand it, Jeff is definitely in as is anybody in the remaining 8 who wins Sunday's race and the two remaining chasers (out of that top 8) who have managed to put together the highest total score in the last 3 races (including Sunday). If Jeff or a non-chaser wins on Sunday then the top three total points over the 3 races make it in.
At Homestead, all 4 chasers tart back at 0 points. Whichever of those 4 drivers who make it into the final has the best finish (they don't have to win, just finish better than the other final chasers) wins the cup.
I have really mixed feelings about this whole process. It does mean that the interest continues right through to the end because it doesn't matter anymore that Jimmie Johnson goes out and wins 6 races before June and it means that small one car teams that could never manage to put up a fight week after week against Hendricks, Gibbs and Penske can still be around at chase time by virtue of wining just one race over the season.
On the other hand, once you're into the chase the successive elimination races mean you can't afford to screw up even once and that too tends to even the playing field as witnessed by the dropping out of big names like Johnson, Kenseth, Hamlin & Earnhardt this year. Untimately though, if you look at the remaining 8, it's hard to say any of them don't belong there and it does promise to be an interesting couple of races, unlike the old days when the season was often pretty much over by now and it was just a question of whether the guy who'd run away with it in the summer could manage to finish the next two races.

She's not really my favorite person, but I've got to give credit where credit is due. She's not the only woman who has ever run in the Cup series, but she is the only woman who has stuck around and really tried to make a go of it in the Cup series. She's not the best driver in the series, but she's also not the worst. She's doing her best and I respect what she has accomplished. We'll just have to wait and see what she can do as she gains more experience in the series...next year could be very interesting...

So I've got a question about the Chase format. I still think it's kind of stupid, but it has definitely made things interesting this year. So does anyone really understand the rules of the Chase this year? Gordon is the only driver with a win in this round so he's for sure going to be in the mix at the last race of the year. But who will the other 3 drivers be? If a Chaser wins this weekend then Jeff will have some competition for the Championship, I guess, but who would the other two drivers be who could possibly win the Chase? Just the drivers with the highest number of points? At one time I thought that I understood all of this but right now none of it is making any sense to me. I miss the old days when everyone raced every race and the driver who had the most points after the last race was the champion...that was so much simpler...

There was much rejoicing!

A lot of the fans ... and drivers too for that matter... seem to spend a lot of time trashing Danica but the fact is she's only one position out of the top 25, ahead of her boss and a lot of the young guns of Sprint Cup and all the put-downs sometimes seem to fall into the category of "me'thinks thou does't protest too much" and I do think a lot her crashes happen becuse they all know they can push her around and she wont retaliate.

The NASCAR officials are funny like that. They'll ignore things for a long time and then go overboard when they finally decide it's time to act. I think that they kind of had to act on what Kenseth did because it was so obviously intentional, and I think that Danica got caught up in that. She probably wouldn't have been penalized if she'd done what she did a week earlier but since they were penalizing Kenseth I guess they decided they had to penalize anyone who did anything similar. Anyway, that's my take on it.

There was much rejoicing!

Well I'm not terribly surprised by the ruling NASCAR handed down. Matt deserved what he got because what he did to Logano was obviously intentional. But Logano kind of deserved what he got because of the way he has raced Kenseth recently, too. You can't be a jerk as many times as he has and not expect someone to get ticked off and go after you the way Kenseth did. I'm not saying that what Matt did was right, but Joey did kind of deserve it. And Kenseth doesn't really lose anything since he was out of the Chase already. Gordon got the best out of that incident...now let's just see if he can hang onto what he's been given and win one last championship...

Well a 2 week suspension means Matt's definitely out, and Kevin proved you can stay in even if you have a really bad week, but Joey might have peaked too soon. I'd love to see Jeff win this year but there will definitely be a lot of people who will yell FIX if he does. Guess we'll just have to wait and see. I'll definitely be watching this weekend.

There are both a U and an I in quit, but together W and E can do anything.

Well I always like Jeff Gordon, but I'm pretty sure he's not going to take the title this year. He's looking good right now, but he's really good at finding ways to mess things up. To be honest, Logano was looking really good for winning the championship until Kenseth took him out this weekend. Not that he can't come back and win it, but now his momentum has been broken and we'll have to wait and see if he can get it back. I'll be interested in seeing what kind of penalties NASCAR gives to Kenseth when I get home from work tonight.

There was much rejoicing!

There only seem to be three or four of us, but inactive teams are kind of a vicious circle. People don't join because there's nothing going on, but there's nothing going on because the team has dropped below critical math.

I do agree with you to a certain extent, but I still think that the Chase is crap. I also think that it's crap that most of this team has decided that they no longer want to communicate with each other because their drivers aren't leading everything, or whatever. This team used to be a lot of fun but it was listed as an inactive team because nobody had posted for more than 3 months before I started this up again yesterday. Is the team really dead now?

I kind of like the idea that you actually have to watch Homestead to find out who wins. Many years, it's pretty much over by this point in the season.

I've been saying all along that the Chase was crap, that they should just race all the races and award the championship to the driver who has the most points at the end of the season. The Chase is still crap, regardless of what format they use, but this is the first year I've found it at least a little bit interesting. Sorry your driver's not in it anymore, but this ridiculousness is what NASCAR has chosen to go with for this year and all the drivers knew going in that this is the game they'd have to play at the end of the year. At least it's a little bit interesting this year...for the first time ever...

There was much rejoicing!

today's race was a good one and I think this new chase format has actually made the chase interesting for the first time ever. it's too bad that junior isn't in it anymore but like he said, the win and the grandfather clock are more important to him now. I hope the rest of the chase is this exciting.

I only got to see about the last 1/4 of today's race, but I thought it was great. (Of course, I can see why Senator wouldn't be thrilled about it. emoticon ) I was ready to look for a new driver last year because I didn't think that Jeff still had the fire to want to win left in him, but I'm more than happy to be proven wrong on that one. The Chase might actually be interesting this year...

Well, they got enough of it in ... and another winner looking toward the chase. Definitely coming down to the wire now, with a lot of the usual suspects still winless. Appropriate that the 43 was in victory lane today of all days.

Our carrier here in Canada gave up part way through the second rain delay so we didn't see the end of it. Good to hear Carl won ... and great to see Tony Stewart finally finish somewhere besides at the back of the pack. Hoping for drier weather next weekend.

So did anyone make it through the entire Bristol race? I thought when Timmy Hill ran into Kenseth that was just plain stupid. I used to work on his legends car and we would joke that he ran faster in the pits than on the racetrack. The ending was weird with the caution light issue, but it was good to see Carl win.

Thanks for the explanation of the chase format Senator. They keep talking about needing to win to even make the chase though. Are they just handing out bonus points for a win, do they take the top 16 in the standings but only if they"ve run a race, or is it a variation on last year where they take the top 10 and then the next 6 "winners".
I have to admit I kind of like the idea of the highest scoring of the top 4 winning it all. There have been a lot of seasons like the last one where the cup was won before the race at Homestead even started. I mean, what were the chances of wonder boy JJ not finishing in the top 22?
Yawn.

I was happy for Jr. to win but am still ticked with Nascar for the call they made on my driver on pit road. I really think Nascar needs to re-evaluate the rules if it means someone is going to get penalized for trying to avoid getting wrecked! emoticon Kasey got totally screwed over on that call, he probably wouldn't have gotten caught up in all those wrecks if he didn't get that penalty. emoticon

That was a pretty good race yesterday. Great to see Jr. win it again, but a little bit weird to see a 3 car on the track that wasn't being driven by his dad. (I didn't expect to ever see that happen.) Congratulations to Dale Jr. emoticon

yea no matter how much we complain NASCAR won't change them I saw the second half of the truck race it was kinda good, not boring and Kyle had to earn the win even though I still don't like him.

I didn't get to watch the nationwide race but listened to some of it on the radio Glad Junior's car won!!!!!

I have always thought that the whole concept of the Chase was really stupid. I say let them all race for 37 (I think) races and the guy with the most points after the last race wins the trophy, just like it used to be. Why did NASCAR need a "playoff" system like the NFL and NBA?? If someone who was just outside of the cutoff for the Chase were to win every single race after the cutoff, he couldn't be the champion because he didn't make the Chase? Stupid, stupid, stupid. (Oh well. These are the current rules and they're not going to change just because I think they're asinine...)

so to me its like why bother having a points system at all...you can literally come in second every single race and if you win the last one you are champ even if the guy who finished second was top in the points...I kinda understand the elimination thing but I HATE the idea of the last race if you are the first chaser over the finish line you are the champ.

I also heard something about they changed the points part but I have not heard that from NASCAR so I really don't know.

The duels were kinda interesting

I haven't been able to pay much attention during this off season so I was not aware that the points system has been changed yet again...and since nascar.com is so darn worthless these days I can't figure it out there. Could someone please enlighten me?

There was much rejoicing!

PLeeeeaaaase! I am having enough trouble trying to figure out why they needed to change the points system yet again and the conspirator talking people that think it is to his benefit...why would he need for the points to be changed when he won last year?!

ok time to start talking smack again!

If I hear one more person say how Austin Dillon can drive just because he is on the pole I will probably deck them! I'm not saying he can't drive I'm not saying he can either...if I remember correctly didn't Danika have the pole last year and what good did that do her? hmmmm? OMG just shut up already and let the kid race to prove himself! Qualifying is a totally different beast then racing!

Yeah, it is kind of funny that all of the races are being listed as running at midnight. Hopefully all the drivers will be able to stay awake. emoticon And I'm with Jenny...nascar.com is totally worthless anymore. Can't find a darn thing there so I've just quit going there much at all. Somebody made some really poor decisions there...

Jenny - here is the link to the schedule. I also posted it to the link part of our 'team stream'. Just click on 'links' under the huddle bar.

es
/schedule.html#nextRace

The dates are right, but obviously that site needs to still update. Except for the Daytona 500, all the other races are being run around midnight! LOL.

Yes, most likely it is. Doesn't mean the rest of us have to like it, but it is what it is. (To coin one of my very least favorite patronizing phrases...)

On a totally different note, I heard today that Trevor Bayne has been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and that this is why he hasn't been racing much recently. Back when he first had to sit some races out because of a "mystery illness" I kind of thought that might be what he had because his symptoms sounded a lot like my own. With treatment I've gotten to the point where my MS isn't that big a deal anymore. I hope that Trevor gets there, too.

There was much rejoicing!
