Well, I KNOW the difference between these, it's just a matter of not giving in. So far I've been rpetty successful at using my Advantages Dack and Memory Cards and Response Cards to get myself through. I have had 2 pretty stressful times where in the past I would have turned to food and I am proud to say I did not this time. emoticon

I've grown accustomed to my diet these past 5 weeks. I feel good about differentiating b/t the different feelings.

I still have to work on not binging, which I do usually 1x a week. That's a big mental, behavioral hurdle for me.

I often allow myself to get very hungry before eating. I also have a problem with desiring food if I see it. For example, it's hard not to eat pizza if it's sitting in front of me.

Maintenance range. 127 to 132.

you know, it's funny but I've never actually written down a response card. I listened to the audio so often that it's actually a voice in my head - LOL!

I might be getting days mixed up but I did the exercise to record how hungry you feel before, during and 20 min after my meals. It was an interesting day - I eat 5-6 times a day and so am never too hungry but always as soon as I finished the last bite, I tended to feel deprived and wanting more. So I'd set the timer on my watch for 20 minutes and EVERY TIME, before the timer went off I realized I felt very comfortably satisfied. It was an interesting learning day today...

I'm re-visiting this step today, and I realize that the desire to eat is what most often gets me into trouble.

Run2ride... The response cards "I just ate... or I'll be eating at..." are great reminders to discourage the desire to eat when I'm not hungry.

today i had a very strong urge to eat and had just read day 10 last night...

I realized it was "desire" - a very strong compunction cuz I was anxious about a task at work. That's one of my strongest grab & stuff moments.

I agree that planning really helps - I know that my food-needs are taken care of and can look for other ways to meet my emotional needs - like acknowledging my what my worry really is when i feel anxious and being able to say "I just ate..." or "I'll be eating at..."

quite honestly, my planned eating has me eating so often i seldom actually get too hungry at all anymore! i guess that's a good thing...

I gain weight from over-eating or eating when I am not hungry. Normally I am a healthy eater.

Exercising helps me to tune into my body and be a better listener.

That is what I have to do is make a conscious decision. The last couple of weeks its been a conscious decision to not get the cookies when I get gas. Now, I did slip up last night and got french fries. But, it does work to make a decision. I guess for me it goes with planned eating. I have to have a plan. This week at work I got chocolate kisses to have in the outer office where they have food for us. That way I ate a kiss when I needed a quick pick me up between clients. That might be my plan for the next month when I'm sure there is going to be other stuff available. Also, someone left a big basket of apples which I really enjoyed this week.

For me it's almost a conscience decision to eat knowing I shouldn't; that's where the response cards come in -- but you have to read them for them to work!!

Truth is that is what my real problem is. Its when I'm hungry, angry, lonely or tired. Then I seem to lose control of my eating. Maybe Beck talks about that more later on.

It was really an eye-opener! It was a great spiritual experience also; I lost 35 lbs. during the 12 weeks and it stayed off for a few years even though my life took some very bad turns right then.

Hunger is definitely a good thing to get a handle on!

It's amazing how little food you actually "need" to live! I did "Weigh Down Workshop" once; you wait until true hunger to eat and then only til you're satisfied -- what an eye-opener!

I copied my monitoring chart too. I want to watch that some more days. I've eaten 4 times today and only once was I actually hungry (at breakfast) the other times were b/c it was "time" to eat supposedly or b/c someone else was eating triggering a desire and/or craving. Maybe if I only ate when I was actually hungry, I might get skinny. LOL I know I rarely ever have hunger pangs or stomach growls.

It is total instinct to eat when you feel like it whether it's craving or hunger. This is one that you have to keep an eye on or it comes back on you, too.

I had to back up and examine this one, as it really struck a chord with me. There have been times when I have been so hungry, I begin shaking & others when I've gone half the day without the need for anything.

Asking myself if I feel like eating now is like asking the dog if she wants a goodie (LOL!!) Seriously... most of my cravings are for substance -comfort food, carbs mostly. It is hard for me to just feel hungry & not act on it. I made a copy of my monitoring chart & will try this the next few days. It will be interesting.

this was interesting...

I realize that I treat myself often enuf i seldom get cravings - ex: I have a single dove dark chocolate (42 cal) for lunch dessert and i never have cravings for chocolate anymore.

My biggest desire? Getting an apple fritter every time I grocery shop. Last night, I passed the bakery case just fine, acknowledging that it's just a desire - no option.

My biggest craving - diet coke!!!! wow! So, starting tomorrow, i'm going to quit drinking my 6pack of dc (I've wanted to quit for a looooong time) and use it as practice to deal with cravings. :)

That sounds like a great plan! I find when I start out thinking that I don't want the food, my stomach usually follows. As the book says, it's the indecision that gets the cravings going. Since you have a plan, you should be fine!

This is an important hurdle for me - I guess it probably is for anybody trying to lose weight! If we all ate only when we are hungry, we probably wouldn't have become overweight in the first place.

For me, seeing food is HARD. Even if the food doesn't really look that good I have a hard time passing it up.

I'm really going to have a hard time with this particular issue at work this week as my office is running a three-day event, and we have catered lunches & snacks all day. Believe me, those plates of brownies & cookies are going to be hard to resist. I'm going to use this strategy though. Usually, we save the best treats for the last day of the event. I am going to avoid the treats and promise myself a moderate-sized treat (not large, but not just a sliver) on the last day. That's still a splurge, but I'm planning for it and I think it will help me stay on track.

I also have to remind myself that these treats are usually a disappointment - too sweet for my taste and generally tasteless otherwise. There is NO POINT taking in all those calories for something that isn't even going to taste good!

I don't have cravings often. Sometimes, after a really hard day at work, I really want a steak, baked potato with sour cream, and a beer. But that's the only "craving" I get per se, and it doesn't happen that often.



Remember, I'll be a better parent if I am alive and healthy to see my daughter grow up than if I keep a spotless house. Take the time for exercise! The dust won't kill us.

I am on this step today. This is a hard one for me because I have been eating because of time, rather than hunger, for SO long. I hope to beable to differentiate between hunger, cravings and desire some day, and I hope learning this really helps me

This is a true work I do get mixed on being hungry and just having a desire to eat. As much as I want to get past this I may have to take some more time on it. I need to practice. My resistance muscle more!! emoticon emoticon

I'm re-visiting this step, and have reminded myself that when I monitored my hunger, and paid attention to desire and cravings it helped eliminate mindless or spontaneous eating.

Recognizing the difference between hunger, desire and cravings was an exercise in conscious awareness. I'm starting to believe that as awareness grows.. eventually old negative behaviors will disolve.

For me... some struture and pre-planning my meals which includes flexibility seems to keep me on track, and helps me distinguish between hunger, desire and cravings.

Judie - I think you should definitely eat breakfast. 3 meals a day is best; 2 snacks if you need them. You might want to change your calorie amount slightly if you're stuck; try eating at 1400 for a day or two and then back down and see if it kick-starts you.

Thanks Nixie - That makes a lot of sense to me too. Even if it is something small, I am now enjoying eating breakfast. I still have most of my calories in the evening but, being short, I only eat 1200 calories a day and I find that most dinners are around 500, an evening snack is 200 so that only leaves 500 for breakfast, lunch and afternoon snack. It has been working well (until this last month when I have hit a plateau -- but I know if I just stick with the program that will eventually pass too.) Hope you are doing well. Judi

Hi Judies2,

I'm not sure what to tell you, but I can tell you about my own experiences. I used to be a big evening overeater, and like you I wouldn't be hungry in the morning and skipping breakfast meant that I could wait longer to eat.

Before starting BDS, I worked hard on figuring out when I was hungry and when I wasn't, and for me, I found that putting a breakfast on top of a night-before massive food fest meant that I got a stomach ache early-midday that felt a lot like hunger. I tended to not get a stomach ache if I didn't eat the breakfast. For the longest time I thought that the stomach ache was hunger, and it took me several months to differentiate between the two.

As a former evening overeater (and all sorts of other crazy patterns as well), I can definitely say that the 3-meals-a-day-with-snacks pattern is by far the best for me. I don't get stomach aches, and I do get hungry for breakfast now. I also enjoy eating breakfast even if I'm not hungry, since it reinforces my commitment to my diet plan. It does take more time to eat like that, though...

I have a question about this one -- If I only eat when I am really hungry, I probably would not have anything other than a cup of coffee until 3 p.m. I know that is not healthy and this time around I have taught myself to eat breakfast and lunch. Before that, I would have coffee in the morning and not be hungry and not eat until I got home at around 3 or 4. I never took a lunch break at work. All my eating was at night, which of course was disastrous for my weight. So, applying the principals from this lesson to afternoon and evening eating and to any time I think about eating because I see something, I'm bored, upset, etc. makes sense to me but I think I should eat in the morning even if I am not hungry. Usually if I have breakfast than I am hungry midday. If I skip breakfast I do not get hungry until much later. What do the rest of you think? I don't recall what Beck says about this but, other than the one day of doing this exercise, I would think that she would recommend eating 3 meals a day.

I just went through this exercise today and recorded only one craving, no desires and no hunger. I had a slim fast and coffee for a quick breakfast and that usually keeps me full until around lunch & ate a little earlier than usual because I had a client luncheon. I think I didn't have as many cravings or as much desire to eat as usual because I knew I would have to write it down. Although I seemed to have subconsciously missed the point of this exercise, it kept me from overeating! I'll keep trying this one until I get a real sense for the differences.

Learning the difference between hunger, desire and cravings gave me an awareness of what I was feeling.

Good Job! Our taste buds really do adapt to what we give them. I had some ice cream the other day (which I used to LOVE) and it was too sweet and thick. (Who said that?!)

This lesson has been tripping me up a bit, so I've gone back to here. The key for me has been doing the sit down step. I also am beginning to only allow myself dark chocolate - really dark chocolate (like 86% cacao), of which I can't eat tons, so I'm cutting back on chocolate - always a good thing. I actually had my first Special Dark (Hershey's minis) the other day, and I think (and hope) I'm losing my taste for the traditional American grocery store chocolate. I'm working my way into a full-blown Eat to Live diet that I have picked out in the beginning, which is helping as well.

The big craving I've been patting myself on the back for this week, is wandering through Kinney's (like CVS, Walgreens, etc), forgetting what I went in for, and completely ignoring all the candy and snacks.

Major step conquered!

For me... knowing the difference between hunger,desire and cravings helps me with the decision to eat or not eat.

Learning to put my focus on my behavior takes my focus off food.

true HUNGER ~ when you've fasted for several hours and your stomach is empty

DESIRE to eat ~ not being particularly hungry but eating because there is food around

CRAVING ~ a psychological and emotionally intense urge to eat... [aka urge to binge falls into this category for me]

for me, i'm not sure that i have any problem identifying real hunger. my problem(s) are a result of Desire & Cravings and the bazillion inappropriate excuses and rationalizations and procrastinations i use to over-eat.... way too often.

I know that when i'm following a healthy meal plan, i will usually get hunger pangs at meal and snack times. it's like the body knows when it's time to eat routinely and signals us then...

when I physically am hungry and need to eat (like after exercise or too long since last meal), I can tell the difference in my body. It can come as a feeling of fatigue. It also can feel anxious & cranky and indecisive ~ so eating regular meals and snacks is important for me to keep blood sugar levels stable...

my struggle is to quit over-eating for inappropriate reasons. it's like my brain knows, but my irrational brain and my deep down inside heart are in revolt and would rather over-eat... and see it as pleasureable even knowing that it hurts me (makes me gain weight and worse).

i wish i could make my irrational brain understand that over-eating is also harmful... so it would quit tossing sabotaging thoughts in my path!

takes about 20 mins for the food to kick in and i can tell physically when it has. i need to embrace this as the good feeling instead of stuffed! I don't know when or why I started going for stuffed... but stuffed is too much.
