Although Beck does not recommend it, I have been adhering to eating 3 meals a day with no snacks 5 days a week since the first of the year. It has made eating sitting down much easier. I'm not likely to stand during a meal, and since I don't eat snacks, I don't have to remember or force myself to sit at other times I eat because I don't eat other times! Weekends are different and I'm still working on this, though I'm likely sitting when I eat. Too often it's on the couch... emoticon

Tougher task than I thought it would be. Have to stop eating while cooking...

Butterfly, I like your attitude about this... :) I tried this for the first time today and I got cranky at myself for not remembering the first few times, until I realized that was silly and I was just getting a chance to figure out how often I really do eat standing up.

I can't get to day 15 before May 2nd (vacation in between) so I am going to take two days for some of the tasks, and this is one of them!

Generally this isn't so hard for me. I hate standing up to eat "meals" so those are always done sitting. It's "those other times" that get me. Like yesterday for instance, my sister brought home some new bread and she wasn't sure she was gonna like it. So she ripped a piece in half, kept one and gave me the other. I took a small nibble off the corner before realizing what I did. Then I said to her "Dang it! You just helped me eat standing up!" She laughed, cause she read the book too, snatched the bread out of my hand and said "Get out of the kitchen". It was really funny, but it reminds me that there are definitely times when I don't realize what I'm doing when it comes to food.

Here's to staying alert and accountable! emoticon

I've been following the NO S Diet since Jan. 1. It recommends eating sitting down, too. I had never realized how much I picked as I got my dinner ready. At first, when I changed the habit, it reminded me of my childhood. I realized it was because I didn't prepare the food so I didn't see it until we were sitting at the table and served ourselves. Now, however, it makes me feel like a civilized grownup. emoticon

I eat my meals sitting down anyway so no problem. But snacking here and there and nibbling while I prepare is another thing so I will definitely have to consciously make an effort with those!

Out of all the skills this is the hardest so far. As a teenger I are most of my meals in
front of the tv. Mom started us out at the table when as time go I migrated in front of the tube. This is tough I did manage to eat breakfast at the table and one snack this just will take a long practice. My teenagers eat in rooms and no we did not start out that way. My little one is messy eater so I make him eat at the table. Who I am to make him something I don't do. SCREAMING with LAUGHTER! hubbie only meal ate at home on the weekdays are dinner all in front of the tv. I love to eat on our deck I think I will use this technique to for a short time. I like quiet when I eat that is rare here. I do eat my Sunday dinner at the table most of the time. This just will take a long time to do. For the family I got to figure how I can get us to at least eat one meal together LOL hard also. Well I am out.

Today I'm reviewing Day 3, Eat Sitting Down.

This is an easy one for me as I really enjoy the eating experience and sitting down is not a problem for me.

Working on day 3 today. Sitting is hard! I never realized how often I eat my meals while bouncing a fussy baby or trying to get my preschooler ready for school. This is definitely going to be a tough one for me.

Day 3: sit down to eat. Man I didn't realize how hard this is. I always eat standing up while fixing the kids their breakfast because i don't make time to sit myself. I also caught myself eating the left overs but no more!

I'm working my way through the workbook for the first time, and today was my first with Day 3.

What a helpful eye opener!

Caught myself a few times having popped something in my mouth without thinking, but many more times more that I stopped myself than I ever would have noticed. Yikes for the past, but yay for this concept!

I am still not doing this consistently but it has not caused any problems. If I start struggling, this and eating with awareness are the first things I am going to start doing all the time. I know that they are really helpful.

So my goal yesterday was to only eat sitting down at the table. Since I went out for lunch and supper was leftovers, my usual culprit for eating standing--cooking, wasn't on the agenda. Anyway, I was hungry at work, grabbed a handful of wheat crackers in the teachers lounge, put one in my mouth when I remembered I had to eat sitting--so I had to plop down at the table and eat! Habits take time!

I will definitely do this today...Yesterday it seemed I was rushing out the door snarfing down food in the few minutes I had. No wonder I felt so much like eating when I flopped in my recliner, book in hand, at the end of the day..it was the only time I relaxed. I need to learn to anticipate a good meal, then allow myself the time to sit down and enjoy it!

I just read some of the discussion and I'm so relieved! I, too used to lick the peanut butter off the kniife and now don't do it and I was wondering if I was taking it too far. I have found day 3 to be the most challenging so far because I had no idea how much I snacked on standing up! I too, started chewing sugarless gum while I'm getting the kids lunch together. It seems to help although I wonder if the whole idea of not having something in your mouth while standing is the point and I shouldn't even be chewing gum!

Yep, soup today could be chocolate tomorrow.

I had the same trouble for Day 3. I sauteed some zucchini and checked them (by tasting them) to see if they were done. oh well.

Day 3

I'm ready for this one!

But seriously, does tasting the soup to see if it needs more salt eating while standing?

This is by far one of the biggest challenges I have. As a homeschooling SAH mom, it seems like making the kids lunch or snacks is an invite for me to grab a quick something while fixing theirs. I never eat a meal standing, but if I'm sneaking something forbidden from the pantry between meals, you can be sure I'm standing while eating. Ugh!

Here is my strategy: I can't stand not being able to lick the peanut butter off the knife while making lunch - LOL!!!So I'll chew sugarless gum while preparing meals!! Gum + peanut butter = eeew!

I chances I will do this consistently is low. What I am doing consistently is eating consciously and enjoying what I eat.

I know that sitting down to eat can be helpful and I will revisit this if I find that I am struggling.

Wow, was this an eye-opener! I honestly thought I didn't have that many occasions when I'd need to make myself comply. How wrong I was! Here's how I did: I caught myself before I took a bite out of my cereal bowl while carrying it to the table. I caught myself before eating off the spoon while helping my 11-year old cook. Then I popped one of the cooked onions into my mouth before I remembered. I took a bite of pizza crust off my husband's abandoned plate while walking through the kitchen. Groan! Guess this was a pretty revealing endeavor for me, huh? But I did sit down and really focus on a planned breakfast and lunch. And a huge step for me is that I did not read anything at either meal. That was a tough one, so I'm pleased with that progress. "Eternal vigilance is the price of SLIMNESS!"

Going to be more intentional about this one. I am going to limit the eating in the car since that is where I spend so much time, I tend to eat too much in the car.

wow, this is much tougher than I thought!
This morning at 6AM, I had already eaten twice while standing and without thinking! But I think this will really bring me something, since I eat so often without thinking and while standing in the kitchen. I will just take anything I see in the fridge and eat it...

This will be a challenge for me, but I can visualize conquering it. It just makes so much sense when I see it in the book about how often do we snack while making dinner, graze at work, eat off the kids plates, etc. I completely agree that we must somehow think of those as "non" calories since we are not really thinking about it and generally it is such a small quantity (but adds up quickly).

I can't wait to practice this step and make it work. So far I am 100% all day. Dinner is a challenge for me so we'll see if I can keep on task.

i'm really encouraged because a couple of months ago (before i'd even heard of the beck diet) i decided to do this. :) i think it would have seemed really hard to commit to it without already planning to do so.

I didn't realize how often I eat standing up. I did pretty well early in the day, but it took a lot of effort. Later in the day I caught myself eating in the kitchen. This will take more work than I thought.

Eating while standing isn't one of my bigger problems, though when I pay attention it does happen more than I thought it did. I do eat sitting in front of my computer. During the week I eat breakfast and lunch at my desk. I do it so that I can spend the actual 30 minutes of my lunch break out walking.

Eating standing is a big obstacle for my change. I would eat everywhere.

Being made so aware of not doing all the standing up eating is very, very telling for me.

Something that is helping - when I found my mindless urge to eat standing, etc. I say the word "STOP". I'll say it loud if I am alone and softly when I am around other people.

Standing and eating is never really a problem for me. However, I fear when we get a little farther into this I will have to conquer my mindless eating. I worked on it a little today. I am used to not getting adequate breaks at work so I have a bad habit of wolfing my food down. I also frequently eat while driving, which I know is another bad habit.

So far, so good:)

The only time I stand to eat is usually when I'm cooking and "tasting." Otherwise, I always sit to eat. I'll have to work on the nibbling thing while cooking. :)

I usually eat sitting down unless I'm eating a juicy piece of fruit which I'll eat over the sink. What I really need to work on is to NOT eat in bed. Sometimes I'll wake up in the middle of night during the weekend and sneak food back in the bedroom. Not good! I haven't read the whole book yet, so not sure if this is an action to work on in the future, but I must start now!

Eating mindfully (for which this was step 1) is going to be a huge deal for me.

For the most part, it hasn't been that hard to plan to eat sitting down... and even to move toward the chair before starting to eat. But even when I thought I was conciously trying to eat sitting, I'd find myself walking with a mouthful of food and not really having noticed how it got there. (Or standing up from my plate just two bites two soon.)

I'm going to have to work at this for the next 42 days.

So today was day three: Eat sitting down. I had read ahead to it a couple of days ago, so I've been practicing it. All in all I usually eat sitting down, but I caught myself peeling a banana between the kitchen and the desk and had to keep from biting it until I sat down. I'm very thankful for the logical quick-wins in the early days. I really think it is helping to build my confidence for the later days.

Today is and today I am.

I always eat sitting down.

I agree with Joy's thought - WHERE you sit while you eat makes a big difference.

Eating MINDFULLY is important.

I'm repeating day 3. Eat sitting down.

This is easy for me if I remember to do it!!

I need to remember, or post something to remind me.

I don't struggle with this concept...sitting down to eat. Sometimes I will take a few bites of a cucumber or tomato I am cutting up but normally, I just wait until my plate is all done and I can sit down to eat it. Whew...at least ONE thing I DON'T struggle with...LOL!!!

Day 3 : Eat Sitting Down

No problem with this, I never eat standing up, but I feel I need to work on where I set down to eat. If I am going to experiance more mindful eating then I need to set down at the kitchen table ,not eat in front of tv or computer. So starting today , I will eat all my meals setting down at the kitchen table.

Day 3

Eating at the Table

I usually dont have a problem with this. But I will be mindful of snacking.

I usually do eat in front of the computer, but I serve myself only what I am going to eat.

Day 3 Task: Eat sitting down.

Wow! I did not realize how much I eat standing up or while walking around the house. It has been hard to remember to do this.

I can see why this is a very important thing to work on to realize how much you are actually eating each day.

Something to really work on.

I've definitely slipped a b it on this one, and usually that's when I over eat.

Tasting while cooking? Fine! But put in on a small plate and sit down to taste it-- really only need to do that once or twice. I don't eat anything after 8pm, so when I do evening cooking I either don't bother tasting, or ask dh to test it, if its a new recipe.

Eating in the car. When I'm commuting I do this-- usually breakfast when I'm running late. I have a rule that when I'm shopping the food all goes in the trunk so I don't snack unplanned. But when its a choice between being late, not eating breakfast, or having my pbj and banana in the car I go for the last option.

Mostly I honor this step by trying to eat mindfully--be aware of what I'm eating when I'm eating it and making conscious choices.

This is tough for me! I see that some of you have limited times that are "sitting" but aren't mealtimes (car, etc) but I'm going to work on just standing for awhile first. It really makes me think about what I've been eating without paying attention!
