Hi,
Sandy I'm guilty with you. Breakfast is always at the computer. Tomorrow I will wait to turn the computer on. I keep it at my kitchen counter so I may have to adjust. Its true I am not paying attention to what I am eating when I do that.
Your confession made me realize what I was doing.
Thanks,
PB

This morning I started to sit down at the computer and eat my breakfast -- but I remembered and went to the dining room table and got 1/2 grapefruit, too, and really enjoyed breakfast all alone!! I feel much more satisfied, too!

I always eat breakfast at the computer, too, to save time. Not a good practice though! Maybe that's why I'm hungry in the morning?!

You've got some great strategies there Shawn! I need to post that reminder on my computer too because I tend to eat lunch while on it.

When I eat sitting down, I pay more attention to what I'm eating and enjoy my food more. Therefore, I feel more satisfied and can wait until the next meal to eat again.

Here are some ways in which I'm working on this step:

I leave for work in the afternoon, and when I'm home alone during the day I need to sit at the table to eat. I've developed a nasty habit of migrating to the computer with my lunch...I'm putting a stop to that.

I've just posted a little note on my computer that says 'Are you eating?' - and I drew a chair.

The other key time is after dinner. My husband is the cook, so I'm the clean-up crew. For the past year or so I've been practicing not taking bites of things while packaging leftovers. It's amazing how quickly those bites add up.

I've also started asking my husband to package the food on nights when I'm feeling particularly weak.

Brewing a hot cup of herbal tea when I'm done with dinner will help me shift out of eating mode, too.

That was supposed to be yesterday. But, when I remembered to eat sitting down I was nearly finishing my plate. I'll start with that today. I'm sure it's very helpful.

I went to Costco with a friend of mine and she went to get one of the samples and asked me why I didn't want one; I told her I couldn't eat standing up and we both kinda laughed. A week or so later she told me she has become so much more aware of how often she eats standing, walking past food -- quite an eye-opener!

Leyette, Way to go for identifying a behavior that has to change! Isn't it amazing how much we consume without even noticing? I have found the eating sitting down really helpful...it allows me to appreciate and really take in what I'm eating, which results in feeling more satisfied. If I can only extend this to cocktail parties... :o)

I read Day 4 yesterday and I at first thought....this isn't me...well I was surprised see that it actually IS me! I snack standing up and I learned that all food counts. Focusing on this will help me realize when I'm snacking and STOP it. Snacking is a big problem for me especially the afternoons at work and after dinnner...before bed. I'm really going to put this to test on my next visit to Sam's....I used to look forward to walking around tasting the samples. No more!!! Day 4 has really been an eye opener.

Love the idea about fresh flowers on the dining table to make the experience more enjoyable. I'll bet it will make it a slower experience too.

Also, love the idea of repeating the day to focus more on this particular task. I've haven't move on to the next day in the book myself this week as work kept me unusually busy. I think it's great to do this at our own paces.

Okay, I have to work on this one! I never thought I ate much while standing. Well, tonight while cooking dinner, I kept catching myself popping tastes of this and that into my mouth. I surpised myself on this. I am definitely looking for ideas to remind myself to sit down while eating.

This is one I definitely want to work on. When I eat standing up or on the run, I'm definitely not consciously eating and getting the most enjoyment out of it. I'm also guilty of going to all the food sample stations at Sam's Club, even when I'm not particularly hungry. I tend to eat meals sitting down at the computer or watching TV, so I don't get the benefit of the visual satisfaction.

I didn't do well at this today, so I think I'll repeat Day 3 tomorrow and make a more concentrated effort at sitting at the dining room table and paying attention to my food. Another think I've done in the past is always have fresh flowers on my dining room table to further enhance the experience.

this one is one of the key ones for me and has prevented me from eating leftover lunches in the pantry at work, unaccountable amounts in the kitchen at home. And I'll bet it's goign to be one that I rely on at holiday parties this month. I have 2 this weekend and for both I am planning to have dinner beforehand and then allow enough room in my plan for 1-2 glasses of wine and that's it.

This is so difficult for me first thing in the morning - I make my omlette at around 4:45 Am - sitting to eat it has been something I have made myself do since I began reading this book - ( Thank you Ritzy!) about two weeks ago. Before this I would stand in the kitchen, take a bite, make a wrap for lunch, take another bite, make a protien shake for after the work out and well you get the picture.

Quoting Dr. Beck:

"Since you'll be eating less food,it's important for you to see all of it spread in front of you at meal or snack time so you can be more visually satisfied."

I eat sitting down, however, sometimes I'll have breakfast in parts and don't always get visual satisfaction.

I've heard about not eating standing up before, but I thought had nothing to worry about... until today!
Turns out I'm always snacking standing up! I had to stop myself constantly today. This will cut down on a lot of "walk-by" snacking at work.

I initially didn't think that I ever eat while I'm standing up. Reading this message board reminded me that there are times, indeed, where eating and standing are one and the same.

I, too, eat while sitting at the computer or in front of TV. I honestly get bored very easily and I can't remember the last time I just ate and paid attention to eating. I'm not on the mindfulness step yet, but it's something to think about!

One fabulous step at a time.

Meredith,
I think an exception is ok when it's a planned exception like that. What Dr. Beck is trying to get us to stop doing is mindlessly putting food into our mouths; so that's something different. You Go Girl!!

I'm going to make an exception to this rule for energy drinks for running. I'm training for a half-marathon and was advised by my running coach to drink plenty of Accelerade during and immediately after longer runs. Since I can't sit down while I'm running (although it's tempting sometimes!) I will be consuming calories while not sitting down.

Thoughts?

I think eating sitting down is brilliant. It helps me pay attention to the food. However, I do still tend to read while eating if I am eating alone.

I was already eating meals sitting down but I used eat between meals, while standing. Mainly I would grab a piece of fruit and eat it standing over the sink. I notice that if I cut up the fruit and serve it on a plate and sit down and eat it:

1) The fruit looks much bigger when cut up and spread on a plate and

2) it is more satisfying because I really notice it.

I was watching the biggest loser the other day. They had a great idea....

When you're in the kitchen preparing your food (which is when I absentmindedly "snag" bits of food, cheese, etc. into my mouth), to chew some gum.

Interesting!

I get this type of gum from the health food store that doesn't have aspartame in it--it has Xylitol (which many studies are showing has health benefits). I'm totally going to try this!

Thanks be to God, I am achieving my goal!

5 years ago my weight was 292. I've been off and on diets since then until I found SparksPeople.
Now I'm getting back to were "I" want to be, 165#.
I discovered the book "The Beck Diet Solution" by Dr. Beck. Her book, which uses Cognative Therapy, is helping me to adjust my mind to think like a thin person. When I can convince my mind, my body will follow.

Hi, I'm Marilyn and on day 3. For me, the biggest problem I have with eating standing up is taking a piece of candy as I walk past the snack jar of a co-workers desk. I usually plan the "walk by" and I know when I do this, I'm usually having a debate in my mind - I shouldn't have it, I'll just have one and thats it no more, this goes on for 5 min to half of the
afternoon!

Today, I will be more conscious of this and I'll record my experiences.

Eating sitting down comes easy to me. I enjoy my food... I enjoy meal times. I actually hate eating when I'm in a rush because I simply don't enjoy the experience.

I do have meals in front of the TV, but because I love my food... LOL... I taste every morsel and enjoy every bite.

I am aware of the food samples when I shop, and even though I may choose carefully, I must admit that I do not always include the calories into my tracking system.

Hi,
I am now sitting down to eat but I must confess in the am it is often at the computer or tv. Its a time saver but I will work on eating only. Atleast I am not already stuffing food down as I prepare it as I did before. I actually use to eat alot while standing up. A real lot.

This is very hard for me and something that I will have to work on everyday. I sit down to eat but it is at the computer or in front of the TV and I want to sit down at the table in the kitchen and pay attention to what I eat. This is going to be very hard to remember to do everyday but i am adding this to my other goals for seven days a week.

I enjoyed hearing your great input on this topic.

Learning to only eat while sitting down was easier for me than some of the other habits. *especially Planning...but that's another day.*

I agree with you, Willow. One of the keys for us...well, me ....is avoiding mindless eating.

I'm off to write Commitment in writing in my journal.

Hi everyone,

I think we are quite the insightful group, don't you? I sure learned a lot from all of you today.

When I am eating emotionally I am never sitting. I think that I will try to be the observer and tell myself, "Gosh, you are standing up and eating. Why is that?"

Best to you all,
Deb

I think as women we have sooo many things we're doing at once that we end up standing up and eating on the run most of the time. I know when my kids were younger I didn't know what hot food tasted like! That's a good idea to wait til the kids are fed and then enjoy your supper.

I think it really cuts down a lot on mindless munching to only eat sitting. We have several grocery stores in the area that give out samples; I just pass by them now.

Good Job Ladies!!

This is surprisingly tough for me. Reading the book has made me aware of how stressful mealtimes are at my home. It is definitely a more pleasant experience to eat a meal while sitting down and yes I am more mindful when sitting.

My situation is that I have 2 young children ages 4 and 9. The 9 yr old has autism and is very hyper at meal time. He will finish his food and be ready for more before I've had 2 bites of mine.

So I am constantly hopping up and down to refill plates and cups. What I have figured out is to eat after the kids or at least after the 9 year old so I can sit without being interrupted over and over.

I want to commit to sitting while I eat.

I think one of the keys for us here is that we need to eat without the distractions of television or books or mindlessness. You know mindless eating? It's easy for us to turn off our minds when there are a bunch of distractions for us all around. It seems so simple to eat sitting down and without those distractions but in our culture, i think it's harder than we might anticipate. Have a great day everyone!

Three things that help me succeed.
1. planning workout and meals a day or more ahead of time.
2. visiting urban mommy's page :)
3. Believing I can do it.

Three things that guarantee failure
1. fast food
2. emotional eating
3 being in a carb coma= no movement

Sitting down to eat: This is a hard one for me, but a good one to conquer. It is easy to add in a lot of extra calories when you grab food and run. I'm a stress eater so when I first come in from work and am making supper there are usually 15 other things going on -- and I stuffed food in my mouth while cooking. A lot of times I didn't even want supper by the time I had it made -- of course, I ate it! This really made me accountable for that -- and it put a stop to it. Now I really try not to eat while I'm cooking. If I need something right away, I'll get some fruit out and sit down to eat a snack before I start to cook. I can focus on cooking more and I don't eat as fast at supper.

I do eat breakfast at the computer while Sparking. I am sitting down and I know it's breakfast. If I don't, I won't have time to exercise.

This is where you record your thoughts about eating sitting down -- how often were you eating and running?
