The first two times I read this book, I blew this off, honestly. I told my husband I needed a diet coach and asked him to be it, he said yes, and then it wasn't discussed again. This time, I'm taking it seriously! I sent him a text this morning outlining the responsibilities and asked if he would commit to them with me. He actually just texted me yes, that we can coach each other, because he needs to work on himself, too.

I also reached out to someone on the team to see if they'd be interested in coaching each other, so I may have two, which would be cool to have one IRL and one online.

I'm 4'10.5". A normal BMI for my height tops out at 121.

I belong to the group TOPS. Take off pounds successfully. I go to the meeting weekly and get support from the group. There are 3 people that I am especially close to and we do call each other during the week and when needed,

Reading everyone's posts has been enlightening. I guess many of us are intimidated for many reasons about imposing on another person for support. I have had 2 Sparkers in the past that have been my coach. They still remain very dear to my heart. However, I think I would benefit most from someone who has been successful at getting to maintenance and has been able to stay there. That is the person I need to light my path and I feel like this journey has been such a struggle and that I can be such a needy person that, well, like I said, I just can't seem to bring myself to impose.

So today I will -

1. Read my ARC and other RC as needed.
2. Stuck to my diet and fitness plan.
3. Ate all my food sitting down.
4. Gave myself credit for all of the positive things I did.
5. Ate my food slowly and mindfully.
6. Look to SP for support, inspiration, and encouragement.

Beck Day 6 - Find a Diet Coach

I asked OneKidsMom to be my diet coach. She said yes, yay. Thank you Barb. I had been cruising the experienced Beckster blogs and a lot of them are doing this Beck Trek and I thought I saw on one of Barbs blogs that she was interested in coaching someone. So I asked her if she would be my coach. It turns out she was already coaching someone but she said she would coach me as well, two was her limit. I am happy to have such a knowledgeable and interesting coach. I have had 2 previous coaches, Watermellen and Walkmama, both wonderful and amazing. I was really scared to ask my first coach to coach me. I thought, nothing ventured, nothing gained, and when she agreed, I was glad I risked asking.
Looking at Beck Pink and Workbook, the suggestion is to pick a fellow dieter from an organized diet support group, an internet support buddy. We Beck Sparkies are so lucky to have a truly amazing Spark team, with successful maintainers who are actively supporting each other and who have blogged their Beck Treks. They are a great resource. Plus our leader Kriszta is super, and has lead (and is currently leading) Beck Treks that we can follow along with other Trekkers and she shares her experience and insights too.

Checklist
1- I read my Advantages Response Card at least twice today - Yes
2- I read other Response Cards as needed Yes, I read the workbook card Do It Anyway, Even if I dont feel like using a diet skill, I have to do it anyway. If I only do what I feel like doing, I wont be able to lose weight and keep it off.
3- I ate slowly, sitting down, and noticing every bite - Yes
4- I gave myself credit when I engaged in helpful dieting behaviours - Yes
5- I decided on a diet coach or support group Yes, OneKidsMom plus the Beck Spark team October 2017 Beck Trek
6- I took steps to line up support Yes, already done
7- I talked to my diet coach and devised the following plan Yes, she is blogging and I am posting on her blog days and she is giving me feedback on my Spark Page
8- I gave myself credit of exercise, dieting skills and sticking to the plan spontaneous exercise, farm work planned exercise, morning hike with friends and our dogs on the morning hike we were talking about Thanksgiving (Canadian Thanksgiving is this weekend) and one hiker said now she was going home to eat because we had been talking so much about food, and I didnt have the thought to eat, as it was in between meals and I was sticking to my plan, I didnt feel tempted, there was no resistance involved, that was great to know and feel that not eating between meals is now routine and not a struggle
- also credit for the supporting cast to successful dieting for me, getting enough rest and staying hydrated

It's really amazing how much I have in common with so many of you - I was also a weight watcher, off and on for many years. I had a wonderful leader who truly made a difference, but once that relationship was gone I never found a leader who cared about me, or inspired me, the way they did. Being a coach is a tough job, and like Queen wrote in her blog, I have been reluctant to ask anyone to take on the job relying fully on participation in forums like this one.

Thanks to so many who have volunteered to be coaches!

1. I do have a Sparks Coach and I find that it helps me get back on track the many times I got derailed. It helps that I found a very reliable coach who has been very successful with her weight loss and maintenance and who is such a nice person.(in the past when my buddies would let me down, I thought that this was the reason I was not making more progress, this time around, i have to "own" my failings. It makes a big difference ).

I had my misgivings about asking for help, a lot along the lines that Queen of the Forest wrote about.
So for me it was a very helpful move.

2. And this reading, which is my nth one, is starting to make me a lot more aware. The group is also my coach.

3. And , I wanted to meet with a group in person to help even more, since i have such a strong saboteur.
After trying WW and OA which did not meet my needs, I recently joined TOPS and found there a very motivated and successful and welcoming group with friendly competition and camaraderie.

So I have done everything to help make this round the best one yet and brake my plateau (defeating the saboteur) for good.

I am so grateful to you Beckers, veterans and recent for sharing on those boards, and of course, to my wonderful Coach too. To each and everyone, thank you and all the best in this journey!

Day 6 - Find a Diet Coach

Without a doubt, the BEST Coach I have had on this weight loss journey is Spark People. The support and resources are phenomenal and they are there for you 24/7 giving encouragement. As a member of Weight Watchers I felt that the support given by leaders was pretty textbook. My sister (who I could call on a moments notice) also struggles with her weight however when she gets "off plan" and has desserts or treats, I find that it can lead me to justify doing the same. I am a premium member of Spark People which also includes Spark Coach and I get a lot of motivation and support from teams and Spark Friends.

I enjoy the community support on this team and other Spark Teams. The community approach to having a diet coach works for me and I enjoy being a coach in return when asked to help problem-solve for another member.

Participating in this challenge and writing and commenting on blog posts is being a "collective diet coach" for each other : )

Having a personal diet coach has additional advantages.
In the first half of my Beck journey I relied solely on community support and blogging.
It is so much better than doing it alone!
But I have had a personal diet coach for more than one year now - we have never met in real life, but stay in close touch online. First via email, and for a few months in a private Spark Team, just the two of us - very helpful for both of us.
Two heads are better than one for sure!
If I had a bad food day or a bad weigh-in day, the other can help remind of the advantages of losing/maintaining weight, and of the good things I deserve credit for.

If you would like to find a diet coach in this team,
you may post on this thread:
www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_mes
sa
geboard_thread.asp?board=-1x10071x65R>798623

Check out the posts before you, your future coach might have posted too just a few days ago.

Completed my to do list, read my D1 Advantages and D3 Eat Sitting Down response cards, ate my meals sitting down (except 1 bite), slowly and mindfully, and gave myself credit for the things I did well.

I had misgivings about asking for a diet coach. And I find that this is the BEST move i could have made, it was over a year ago. The last year has been difficult. If it had not been for my diet coach, i would have given up .

This time around I will share in more details the obstacles i have in my daily progress. (weak motivation, cravings etc.. so that i will be more specific and face the solutions). It took me a long time to get to the point I am now, a lot of ups and downs, the most important part is to never give up. And I am very thankful to my coach for also not giving up on me.
Thank you, coach! emoticon

Day 6 Giving & receiving support on Sparks helps reduce & maintain weight. My husband is a good coach, we are learning lifestyle improvements. He grew-up in India with excellent eating habits. Came to US for college and found it difficult to remain vegan and be a marathon runner. Going through Beck readings several times may help me feel more confident.

This is a tough one.
My "sabotaging thoughts" are telling me to keep this journey a secret and not inconvenience anyone with this nonsense.
In thinking helpfully I tell myself that I "inconvenience" my friend with all kinds of issues already. So I'll enlist her to be my coach. And, semi-anonymity on this forum will help me "keep this a secret."

Today, I have to find a coach. I have thought long and hard about this today. No one wants to be a burden on someone. This is my sabotaging thought, it's hard to ask someone on this site so I looked who could be a good partner with my family members?

My husband, he would be great at discipline but horrible at giving credit and encouragement. He is an awesome problem solver. He is completely disciplined himself. He is almost a food policeman. :-) Sometimes I take his advice. but sometimes I roll my eyes and ignore it (usually he is right) ..so i thought of another.

My sister, she is awesome encourager and so supportive but terribly undisciplined. She struggles with her weight as she is 100 plus pounds overweight. But she is so forgiving and kind, but not so good at giving advice on discipline.... I thought of another.

My Mom, she is obsessed with food. She asks me all the time what I eat for dinner and how much my weight is. She is very thin and practically perfect in every way. She is 81 and walks 7 miles a day. The girl is tough. She lifts weights and is consistently on the move. She is an awesome role model, but she is hard on herself. She doesn't give herself any credit. She doesn't have much confidence in herself either. She might be the best person for the job but doesn't give herself credit for the small things ...

Then I have a childhood best friend who had some eating difficulties. She is tough on herself and does anything to be thin. She is still thin and doesn't struggle at all anymore because she has habitually trained herself not to care about food. But in our 20s she did everything to get herself thin. She never gives herself credit (still to this day) and She used to throw up to be thin. She is dangerous to be my coach because of her obsession with being beautiful and never giving herself credit of being beautiful. She is downright gorgeous and she can't accept compliments. She goes to a therapist so she knows she is hard on herself. She understands that few calories in and expelling more calories equals weight loss and will put herself in pain to do it. , I just decided now not to ask to her. I just talked myself out of it. She might have some great tips, but I don't think she is a good accountable partner.

so, could I use my husband for discipline, my sister for encouragement and credit and my mom for discussing details of my food intake and weight? Could that work? No one knows about this program except for what I tell them though.

Would someone be willing to do this with me on this site as they know about the program and the right questions to ask? Or would it work to have a trio of coaches that can help in different ways and they are already accessible to me so easily and know me so well ?

Which would work better?

I know I am late to day 6, but I have a real problem with this one.

I am not willing to ask someone else to do something I would not be willing to do and I know I would be a terrible coach, so am not willing to be one for anyone else.

That being said, I will just use this group as my coach. I have set a calendar reminder to check in every Saturday when I should have time to write something up.

Like many of you I will get lots of support from this team and from fellow Sparkers but I can see the advantages to having a personal diet coach. I thought about asking my hubby to be my diet coach. He is very supportive and is on Spark also. Although I already have my doctor, my husband, my Mom and my two girls in my cheerleading squad I'd really like to add to my support system. I have reached out to someone who is looking for a diet coach also so I'll see where that goes.

I started a coaching class in January that will continue through May. And I hope there will be a summer session I can join as well. This class is not Beck based, but is a lifestyle/weight loss coaching class and it seems to fit well with Beck (so far). I am also blogging and doing a journal here on SP to reinforce what I am doing.

I enjoyed reading the diet coach ideas and approaches here!

I use this team and the various threads as my diet coach. I have a reminder set to check in every Saturday.

My wife is my primary diet coach. We've been married for 35 years and she has maintain her physique throughout that time. She's never been on a diet and she's very adept in giving me advice and "constructive" criticism. Additionally, I use SparkPeople, including the people in this group to give me motivation and encouragement.

Day Six - Find a Diet Coach

Without a doubt, the BEST Coach I have had on this weight loss journey is Spark People. The support and resources are phenomenal and they are there for you 24/7 giving encouragement. As a member of Weight Watchers I felt that the support given by leaders was pretty textbook. My sister (who I could call on a moments notice) also struggles with her weight however when she gets "off plan" I find that it is easier for me to justify doing the same. I am a premium member of Spark People which also includes Spark Coach and I get a lot of motivation and support from teams and Spark Friends.

On my first Beck round in Oct 2016, I asked an experienced Beckster whose blogs I followed and enjoyed if she would be my Beck coach and she agreed. She was awesome. We have different styles of finding support on Spark. she blogged daily and got her support from comments on her blog and she had a personal Beck coach who commented every day besides her regular blog followers and a half a dozen Becksters who also commented on her blog. She had a blog community. I prefer to get my Spark support from supporting specific teams and team members. She asked me how she could support me as a Beck trek coach and I said, I would send her, via a spark goodie, a weekly recap of my journey and she read it over and commented and encouraged me. Being available in case I had a specific scenario during the week that I needed help with was also part of the deal. And I did use that life line once, and it was great to have it. Sending weekly recaps was good for me both in working through the material and being accountable to someone and therefore staying on track, not falling too far behind, finishing the trek.

On this my second Beck round, I am going to use this thread and two other team threads to summarize what I am doing and get ideas and give support to others on these threads and trek.

Despite my hesitation to bother someone, I did ask for a coach this last fall and this has made all the difference for me. Especially at times when I was struggling, knowing that I was going to report weekly to her, kept me focused and prevented me from giving up. Upon reading Day 6, I realize that I should also ask for help when I find myself struggling during the week, to prevent binges.

Every time I read Beck I get some new help and insight, even when I thought I knew every chapter well.

In 2015 I read Beck Diet Solution alone, and my Diet Coach was SP community, friends who read my blogs. Plus I gave my Advantages Response Cards to my husband, explained him what I'm doing and asked him to remind me of these advantages if I struggle (it did not happen, but it was good to know he would support me, and I received many helpful comments on my blogs too.

In 2016 Oct/Nov I read BDS together with members of this team, and paired up with a Spark Friend, and I reported to her weekly on my weight, struggles and successes. I found personal support and accountability more powerful than "just" blogging, and we still exchange emails weekly.

If you prefer email communication over a real life coach, you may check out our team thread to pair up with someone and be diet coach for each other, and I think there are a few open offers!

I have a friend who lost 100 lbs with paleo and has struggled with maintenance. I sent her a message about spark people and the beck diet solution. She and I will be a support for one another. I'm not sure she is up and running here yet. This diet coach step is hard for me. I have been a weight watcher member this past year and was never able to get my head in the game. I was mad, ambivalent, and did not follow the program. The leader is the best leader I have ever had and is totally amazing. I have made some really warm and good friends out of this group. I have seen and heard 11 or 12 people hit their lifetime goal. What the... I guess I am really in need of the cognitive therapy piece and personal reflections. I have had some health issues which have been an obstacle and gotten me sidelined as well. When I started back on spark, which this is not my first rodeo either, I said to myself I would track calories and eat a healthy diet without points, to see if I can follow through. I have been thrilled to see if this program will work with any diet. I was just contemplating dropping my membership with weight watchers yesterday and today I'm reading about support groups. Not sure where I'm going with this, so I guess I'll just leave it here.

My hubby is a great support ... to any endeavor I take on. I don't want a watch dog ... but I do need moral support.

I would appreciate any support, motivation and kick in the pants y'all can offer.

I want to surround myself with like minded Sparkers.

I am going to use this team, Beck Diet Solution, as my diet coach.

1. I set an appointment reminder in SparkPeople to post a weigh-in and update every Saturday.
2. I will post daily in the Day 1-42 topic threads.

Today I read my list of reasons to lose weight, I ate everything slowly and mindfully while sitting down. I am giving myself credit for these things:
a. I got off the bus one stop early
b. I took the stairs
c. Opting not to eat the afternoon snack that I brought to work (too rushed). Instead tolerating hunger by waiting until after I arrived home, when I could eat my in a relaxed manner.
d. Tolerating evening hunger; going to bed feeling hungry

Two friends and I started working on Beck last Fall. Now we meet once a week for coffee and talk about our successes and challenges and text one another when we need support. When one of us misses the meetings, if she can, she calls in on Skype and joins the meeting. I can't tell you how wonderful this support has been for all 3 of us!

Congrats to you all who have found a coach! This one's a toughie for me. Can I defer this step for awhile? I can't think of anyone in RL I'm excited to have my back on this one, so I'm hoping that, with time, I'll get to know people who are working on the same things as I am, and we can, you know, do some reciprocal coaching, or something.

And here's a shout out to the other introvert(s) here who are working on this one!

in my two previous beck journeys my diet coach has been DH and my blogs and the support from others. i'm afraid i am guilty of not wanting to impose, not wanting to be turned down. DH is probably tired of hearing me talk about beck and my weight (maintenance) issues, but he is pretty good about it anyway.

I like the idea of a diet coach, someone to be accountable to and to confer with, that is motivating to me. I asked a Beck Sparkteam member who has a lot of experience, and am thankful the reply was yes. The plan is to email once a week with my scale and non-scale victories and ask for a perspective on some of the Beck directions.

Like Kriszta, I have not had a Beck coach. But, unlike Kriszta, I have not completed Beck Pink. I am, however, aware of CBT and have used it successfully for years. What interests me about the Beck Books is how CBT techniques are applied to weight loss.

I do not blog regularly. Much of my thinking, honestly, gets kept to myself. Part of that is time constraints and part of that is the fact that I'm introverted.

Reading the blogs of others, engaging as time permits and as I feel safe to do so has been incredibly helpful to me. I never imagined that engaging in the online community here at SparkPeople could be so supportive.

Honestly, still find it scary sometimes ... emoticon

For October Beck Reboot I asked a Spark Friend to be my diet coach, planning to report to her weekly and in case of trouble (that is, if I struggle with eating on plan or with completing my daily to do list tasks for whatever reason.

Also you, Beck team members and other Sparkers who read my blogs and leave comments are my supporters.
Sharing my progress (so far) and struggles (sooner or later) helps me to stay motivated, accountable and you can get support and advice from you all.

Being a diet coach for someone or for each other is good for both parties.
It is really discouraging when diet buddies don't show up - but that is the nature of this journey, many of us start but not everyone goes all the way.
I hope you will find a buddy here in the team or elsewhere on SP, or in Real Life!
If not, I can be your coach via weekly spark mail or email, plus you may post about your progress in several threads of our team: on the Beck Days, or daily check in thread or weekly Beck checks.

I didn't have a real coach, instead I posted SP blogs, in addition asked my DH to be my real life coach in case of emergency. But he didn't have to step in, the support and advice from my SP buddies was sufficient, and sharing my journey held me accountable.

This is a tricky one for me. As Judith Beck wrote in the sabotaging thoughts, i do not want to impose on others. Also, from previous experiences, when my diet buddies stopped showing up, i felt let down and my motivation broke.

So i am afraid of asking for help and also afraid to be let down. (life happens, and diet buddies have their own challenges and won't necessarily be there on a regular basis). This is why i actually went back to the Beck team, so that i would not be faced with this problem.

And I had forgotten about " finding a diet coach". Now i do not know what to do.

Feel free to come up with ideas. There is a good and constructive Overeater Anonymous group in my neighbourhood, but i do not adhere enough to the 12 steps philosophy to want to join.

I will continue to think and look. And hope that i can find a solution to my dilemma.

Hi, it is really important to have a diet coach.
I did it in a tricky way: shared my progress here on SP with my friends regularly, and asked my husband to be my real life coach after explaining what I expect of him.
Mostly I just kept with my "coaches" and turned to my husband only 1-2 times, but it was good to have his support.
I wish you success with the program, and I'm here for you if you choose me as your diet coach. did the program in Jan-Feb2015, and still practice.

OK... so this is the main reason I didn't join this group a week ago, before I started the Beck plan ... again!

I really do think I should be able to do this on my own. after all, I know EVERYTHING there is to know about dieting. ;-) But after reading and re-reading day six in the workbook and listening to my audio tape, I finally decided that I TRULY want to succeed this time, and I'm asking for help. I need someont to hold me accountable. Someone to help me problem solve when I struggle and celebrate when I am successful.

Is there anybody out there that would be willing to give me a little bit of their time and offer occasional words of advice and encouragement?

Maintenance Lessons Learned:
-go on with the healthy lifestyle learned in weight loss phase
-just add healthy foods gradually to stop losing
-work out every day - 30-60 minutes is enough to maintain weight and good mood
-do not try to balance overeating by extreme workouts, it is not going to work
-avoid overeating, instead of satisfaction you get stronger cravings

I am on day 15. I'm taking this slow. We can check in with emails daily or once a week whichever works for you two.

Oh! If it's possible we can set up or locate the daily check in here on Beck.

Up to you two.

I am on Day 7 today. Putting triggers out of sight and out of mind.
I have done this before. I put snack food in a drawer and stay away from it, or in the freezer.

What day are you on/

If you and Bev think a third person wouldn't be too much of a challenge, I'd be interested in joining you -- let me know what you think. I totally understand if you think 3 wouldn't work...

The pink book recommends a diet coach. I was blessed to have one. The green book recommends a diet buddy. That seems more comfortable to me. Her new blue book does not suggest either, although she has you discuss a couple specific points with a friend. I suspect that is best of all!

I have one. A lovely soul from this team. She is busy, but I think I will learn a lot from her.

I don't like the word "diet coach"...I have a diet buddy..we talk about food and food related things almost every day.
I also have a few other people that I can call at any time about food related things...I'm thankful for these people being a rock for me when I need them.

I am also grateful for AnitaJJ who has graciously chosen to start the same time as I have, it's good to know that someone else is working on the same thing as you are!!

Thanks Ani
